4x4 optical packet switching of asynchronous burst optical packets with a prototype, 4x4 label processing and switching sub-system

We report a prototype, 4x4 (4 input/4 output) label processing and switching sub-system for 10-Gb/s asynchronous burst variable-length optical packets. With the prototype, we perform a 4x4 optical packet switching demonstration, achieving error-free (BER<10(-12)) label processing and switching operation for all possible input/output combinations (16 switching paths) simultaneously. Power consumption and latency of the entire, self-contained sub-system is 83 W (includes fan power) and 300 ns, respectively.

An Optically Clocked Transistor Array for High-Speed Asynchronous Label Swapping: 40 Gb/s and Beyond

We describe the development of an optically clocked transistor array (OCTA) interface device for label swapping high-speed asynchronous burst optical packets. The OCTA integrates the three critical functions of serial-to-parallel (SP) conversion, parallel-to-serial (PS) conversion, and clock-pulse generation into a simple optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) to create a single-chip interface between the input/output baseband optical labels and a CMOS label processor. The result is a high-performance label swapping solution which is compact and low power. In this paper, a detailed investigation of the design and optimization of the circuit is first performed, followed by testing of device stability under subsystem operating conditions. Finally, demonstrations of single-channel switching speeds allowing greater than 100-Gb/s operation, 40-Gb/s SP and PS conversion with an eight-channel OCTA, and error-free label swapping of 10-Gb/s asynchronous optical packets with a prototype label swapper module are described.

A novel scheme for self-clocked bidirectional serial/parallel conversion is proposed with an optically clocked transistor array (OCTA). As a result of its internal clock generation, serial-to-parallel (SP) and parallel-to-serial (PS) conversion capability, the OCTA alone realizes a single-chip low-power interface between input-output high-speed asynchronous burst optical packets and complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor electronics, thus enabling a compact low-power solution for label swapping of optical packets. A compact low-power label swapper for asynchronous burst optical packets based on an optically clocked transistor array

We have constructed a prototype optical label swapper module by integrating an optically clocked transistor array InP optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) with complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor electronics. Dual serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversion (demultiplexer/multiplexer) capability of the OEIC enables a compact low-power low-cost label swapper. With the prototype, we demonstrate label swapping of 10-Gb/s 16-bit asynchronous burst preamble-free optical labels.

An optically clocked transistor array (OCTA) for 40-Gb/s, bidirectional serial-to-parallel conversion of asynchronous burst optical packets

We have fabricated an optically clocked transistor array (OCTA) in an optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) technology incorporating 0.18-µm gate length high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs). As a result of its dual serial-to-parallel (SP) and parallel-to-serial (PS) conversion (time demux/mux) capability, the OCTA realizes a single-chip, low-power interface between input/output high-speed asynchronous burst optical packets and CMOS electronics, thus enabling a compact, low-power solution for label swapping of optical packets. Single channel measurements indicate an input bandwidth greater than 65Gb/s. An eight-channel array demonstrates SP and PS conversion at 40Gb/s.

Optoelectronic packet switches for 40-Gb/s 16-bit asynchronous burst optical packets

We present two types of optoelectronic time-domain packet switches, a photonic add-drop multiplexer, and a 4/spl times/4 packet switch, for high-speed asynchronous burst optical packets. They employ all-optical serial-to-parallel converters, optical single clock-pulse generators, and photonic parallel-to-serial converters that enable utilization of a compact highly functional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor circuitry for label processing, packet switching, and buffering for contention resolution. We have experimentally confirmed basic operation of the packet switches for 40-Gb/s 16-bit asynchronous optical packets.

Photonic Random Access Memory for 40-Gb/s 16-b Burst Optical Packets

We present a photonic random access memory (RAM) that can write and read high-speed asynchronous burst optical packets freely by specifying addresses. The photonic RAM consists of an optical clock-pulse generator, an all-optical serial-to-parallel converter, a photonic parallel-to-serial converter, all developed by us, and a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor RAM as a storage medium, and features large capacity, long-term storage, random access at an arbitrary timing, low power consumption, and compactness. We experimentally confirm its basic operation for 40-Gb/s 16-b optical packets.

Ultrafast All-Optical Serial-to-Parallel Conversion and Its Application to Optical Label Processing

A novel scheme for all-optical serial-to-parallel conversion (SPC) is proposed for label recognition of ultrafast asynchronous burst optical packets. Compact SP converter modules were developed using a fiber array or a surfaceemitting planar lightwave circuit, and 1-Tbit/s and 40-Gbit/s SPC for 16-bit optical packets is demonstrated using the modules. The key device in the converter is a spin-polarized surface-reflection all-optical switch (LOTOS) with an ultrafast switching time (250 fs) and an extremely high on/off ratio (>30 dB). Label recognition of 40-Gbit/s 16-bit burst-mode optical packets is experimentally confirmed using an optical clock-pulse generator and a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics circuit as well as the all-optical SP converter. 1 x 4 self-routing is also demonstrated using 2-channel control signals generated from the CMOS circuit according to a routing table.
