Coherent state switching using vibrational polaritons in an asymmetric double-well potential.

The quantum dynamics of vibrational polaritonic states arising from the interaction of a bistable molecule with the quantized mode of a Fabry-Perot microcavity is investigated using a generic asymmetric double-well potential as a simplified one-dimensional model of a reactive molecule. After discussing the role of the light-matter coupling strength in the emergence of avoided crossings between polaritonic states, we investigate the possibility of using these crossings to trigger a dynamical switching of these states from one potential well to the other. Two schemes are proposed to achieve this coherent state switching, either by preparing the molecule in an appropriate vibrational excited state before inserting it into the cavity, or by applying a short laser pulse inside the cavity to obtain a coherent superposition of polaritonic states. The respective influences of dipole moment amplitude and potential asymmetry on the coherent switching process are also discussed.

Oscillatory states of quantum Kapitza pendulum

We study quantum mechanics problem described by the Schrödinger equation with Kapitza pendulum potential, that is the asymmetric double-well potential on the circle. For the oscillatory states spatially localize around the two stable saddle positions of the potential, we obtain the perturbative eigenvalues and corresponding piecewise wavefunctions. The spectrum is computed by extending the angle coordinate to the complex plane so that the quantization condition is formulated as contour integral along a path extending in the imaginary direction. Quantum tunneling between the wells is computed.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation in an asymmetric double-well potential

Josephson effect of Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential is an obvious manifestation of macroscopic quantum coherence. Most of researches focus on the symmetric double-well potential. In this work, we investigate the dynamic of Bose-Einstein condensates in an asymmetric double-well potential by using two-mode theory and computer simulation. In the absence of the interaction between atoms, the dynamic equation of condensate can be solved analytically. The amplitude as a function of energy difference of two wells is obtained. We can find that the change of energy difference will lead to the different dynamic behaviors of condensate. If the energy difference is relatively large, the condensate will primarily occupy the well that is occupied more than the other well at the beginning time. It is interesting that such a trap phenomenon is not dependent on the position of the high energy potential well nor the position of low energy potential well. If the energy difference becomes small, the tunneling and oscillation of condensate will be enhanced. When the interaction between atoms is present, our numerical calculations show that as the nonlinear interaction increases, the dynamic behavior of condensate exhibits different characteristics, such as trapping in a well, enhancing the tunneling and oscillation between two wells, and enhancing the trapping in a well at large nonlinear interaction, which is similar to the dynamic change caused by the energy difference in the case of ideal condensate. That is to say, on the one hand, the nonlinear interaction can lead to the trap of condensate as well as the dynamic trap to happen in symmetric double-well potential. On the other hand, the nonlinearity can promote the tunneling of condensate, counteracting the effect of the asymmetry of potential. And, this counteracting effect is related to the difference in energy between asymmetric potential wells. To understand the underlying mechanism, the full dynamic behavior of two-mode model is illustrated and the dynamic transition can be seen clearly. Combining the results obtained with and without interaction, regarding nonlinear interaction as effective potential provides a clear way to explain dynamic transition of condensate in an asymmetric double-well potential. In addition, we also perform the numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and the results are consistent with the conclusions obtained by using the two-mode theory.

Nonlinear response theory for Markov processes. IV. The asymmetric double-well potential model revisited.

The dielectric response of noninteracting dipoles is discussed in the framework of the classical model of stochastic reorientations in an asymmetric double-well potential (ADWP). In the nonlinear regime, this model exhibits some pecularities in the static response. We find that the saturation behavior of the symmetric double-well potential model does not follow the Langevin function and only in the linear regime are the standard results recovered. If a finite asymmetry is assumed, then the nonlinear susceptibilities are found to change the sign at a number of characteristic temperatures that depend on the magnitude of the asymmetry, as has been observed earlier for the third-order and fifth-order responses. If the kinetics of the barrier crossing in the ADWP model is described as a two-state model, then we can give analytical expressions for the values of the characteristic temperatures. The results for the response obtained from a (numerical) solution of the Fokker-Planck equationfor the Brownian motion in a model ADWP behaves very similarly to the two-state model for high barriers. For small barriers no clear-cut timescale separation between the barrier crossing process and the intrawell relaxation exists and the model exhibits a number of timescales. In this case, the frequency-dependent linear susceptibility at low temperatures is dominated by the fast intrawell transitions and at higher temperatures by the barrier crossing kinetics. We find that for nonlinear susceptibilities the latter process appears to be more important and the intrawell transitions play only a role at the lowest temperatures.

Effective potentials in a rotating spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 spinor condensate

We theoretically study the stationary-state vortex lattice configurations of rotating spin-orbit (SO)- and coherently-coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic potentials. The combined effects of rotation, SO and coherent couplings are analyzed systematically from the single-particle perspective. Through the single-particle Hamiltonian, which is exactly solvable for one-dimensional coupling, we illustrate that a boson in these rotating SO- and coherently-coupled condensates are subjected to effective toroidal, symmetric double-well, or asymmetric double-well potentials under specific coupling and rotation strengths. In the presence of mean-field interactions, using the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii formalism at moderate to high rotation frequencies, the analytically obtained effective potential minima and the numerically obtained coarse-grained density maxima position are in excellent agreement. On rapid rotation, we further find that the spin-expectation per particle of an antiferromagnetic spin-1 BEC approaches unity indicating a similarity in the response with ferromagnetic SO-coupled condensates.

Controlling Tunneling Oscillation and Quantum Localization in an Asymmetric Double-Well Potential: A Bohmian Perspective.

The roles of spatial symmetry and strength of external time-dependent perturbation on the dynamics of a quantum particle, initially localized in one of the wells of an asymmetric double-well potential are studied using the recently developed techniques incorporating quantum theory of motion and time-dependent Fourier grid Hamiltonian methods. The model used here includes a mimic of the related experimental situations which is considered as a perturbation to the static double-well potential. Analysis of localized and delocalized phase space structures and corresponding time-profile of tunneling probability reveal the recipe toward controlling the tunneling oscillations by modulating the parameters of applied perturbation. A study on a stochastic pulsating potential also reveals the root to the quantum localization, even in moderate field strength.

Quest for eternal oscillons

Nonlinear field theories produce unstable but long-lived configurations known as oscillons. These structures have been studied with asymmetric and symmetric double-well potentials and extended to other forms of potentials. In the present work, we examine the consequences of considering higher-order field theories, where we have used a generalization of the symmetric double-well potential and a $\phi^6$ potential. Consequently, we have found $3+1$ spherically symmetric oscillons with significantly large lifetimes without parameter fine-tuning.

Longitudinal and transversal resonant tunneling of interacting bosons in a two-dimensional Josephson junction

We unravel the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics of a few interacting bosonic clouds in a two-dimensional asymmetric double-well potential at the resonant tunneling scenario. At the single-particle level of resonant tunneling, particles tunnel under the barrier from, typically, the ground-state in the left well to an excited state in the right well, i.e., states of different shapes and properties are coupled when their one-particle energies coincide. In two spatial dimensions, two types of resonant tunneling processes are possible, to which we refer to as longitudinal and transversal resonant tunneling. Longitudinal resonant tunneling implies that the state in the right well is longitudinally-excited with respect to the state in the left well, whereas transversal resonant tunneling implies that the former is transversely-excited with respect to the latter. We show that interaction between bosons makes resonant tunneling phenomena in two spatial dimensions profoundly rich, and analyze these phenomena in terms of the loss of coherence of the junction and development of fragmentation, and coupling between transverse and longitudinal degrees-of-freedom and excitations. To this end, a detailed analysis of the tunneling dynamics is performed by exploring the time evolution of a few physical quantities, namely, the survival probability, occupation numbers of the reduced one-particle density matrix, and the many-particle position, momentum, and angular-momentum variances. To accurately calculate these physical quantities from the time-dependent many-boson wavefunction, we apply a well-established many-body method, the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree for bosons (MCTDHB), which incorporates quantum correlations exhaustively. By comparing the survival probabilities and variances at the mean-field and many-body levels of theory and investigating the development of fragmentation, we identify the detailed mechanisms of many-body longitudinal and transversal resonant tunneling in two dimensional asymmetric double-wells. In particular, we find that the position and momentum variances along the transversal direction are almost negligible at the longitudinal resonant tunneling, whereas they are substantial at the transversal resonant tunneling which is caused by the combination of the density and breathing mode oscillations. We show that the width of the interparticle interaction potential does not affect the qualitative physics of resonant tunneling dynamics, both at the mean-field and many-body levels. In general, we characterize the impact of the transversal and longitudinal degrees-of-freedom in the many-boson tunneling dynamics at the resonant tunneling scenarios.

Electron transport properties of molecular junctions with anharmonic double-well potentials

In the present paper, we investigated the electron transport properties of molecular junctions with anharmonic vibrations described by double-well potentials in the sequential tunneling regime. It was found that the suppression of the low-bias current caused by strong electron-vibration couplings under harmonic approximation, i.e., the Franck-Condon blockade effect, could be lifted in the case of symmetric double-well potentials. The removal of the Franck-Condon blockade effect is a result of the distribution of the ground vibrational wave function in the two wells. Such a feature also enables the Franck-Condon blockade effect to be restored by breaking the symmetry of the double-well potential. We further demonstrated that the special vibrational transition properties of asymmetric double-well potentials could enable the effective modulation of the charge transport properties of such molecular junctions in the Franck-Condon blockade region by inducing population in excited vibrational levels with external fields such as infrared excitation.

Experimental Observation of Interorbital Coupling.

Interorbital coupling refers to the possibility of exciting orbital states by otherwise orthogonal noninteracting modes, a forbidden process in photonic lattices due to intrinsic propagation constant detuning. In this Letter, using a femtosecond (fs) laser writing technique, we experimentally demonstrate that fundamental and excited orbital states can couple each other when located at different spatial positions. We perform a full characterization of an asymmetric double-well-like potential and implement a scan method to effectively map the dynamics along the propagation coordinate. Our fundamental observation also constitutes a direct solution for a spatial mode converter device, which could be located in any position inside a photonic glass chip. By taking advantage of the phase structure of higher-order photonic modes and the effective negative coupling generated, we propose a trimer configuration as a phase beam splitter, which could be of great relevance for multiplexing and interference-based photonic concatenated operations.

Visco-elasticity and mechanical relaxation behavior in La-based metallic glasses

Dynamic mechanical relaxation process is one of the important issues to understand mechanical/physical properties of metallic glasses. In the current research, dynamic mechanical relaxation behavior of La62Al14(Cu5/6Ag1/6)20(Ni1/2Co1/2)4 and (La0.7Ce0.3)65Al10Co25 bulk metallic glasses were investigated by mechanical spectroscopy. Unlike the typical Zr- or Cu-based metallic glasses, (La0.7Ce0.3)65Al10Co25 metallic glass shows an evident β relaxation process. On the other hand, La62Al14(Cu5/6Ag1/6)20(Ni1/2Co1/2)4 metallic glass presents a “shoulder” relaxation process. Physical aging below the glass transition temperature Tg induces a decrease of the concentration of “defects”, which corresponds to a reduction of the intensity of the β relaxation. During aging process, the amplitude of β relaxation (△E") decreases, while the relaxation time (τβ) increases. In organic glasses, it was reported that the changes of In(τβ) and In(△Emax) are linearly correlated with In(τβ)=b-a In(△E"max), this correlation has also been found in metallic glass. This behavior is discussed in the framework of the asymmetric double well potential (ADWP) model, and U and △ are used to characterize ADWP. It is suggested that during the aging process, the U/△ ratio remains basically unchanged, which is close to the coefficient describing the linear correlation between In(τβ) and In(△Emax) (U/△~a).

A relevant and important question in studying the transport of nanoparticles is the possibility and methods of controlling the generated currents. One of the possibilities is to use the ratchet effect, i.e. the occurrence of directed motion as a result of the influence of nonequilibrium fluctuations of various nature when one or more symmetries in the system are broken. To implement the ratchet effect, a deterministic dichotomous process is often used, which can be modeled by two alternating states that have constant characteristics. Usually, the main factor determining the direction of motion of a Brownian motor is the spatial asymmetry of the potential profile. In certain cases, for example, for a double-well potential profile, one can relatively easily investigate the conditions for reversal of the direction of motor motion. In this paper, using the idea of Parrondo’s paradox games consisting of alternating strategies of a game that provides an average winning, we simulated the ratchet effect for a diffusion hopping model of an adiabatic Brownian motor with an asymmetric double-well on-off potential. The conditions affecting the direction of nanoparticle motion are investigated, the possibility of temperature control of the motion direction is shown, and an estimate of the generated average velocity of the Brownian motor in the adiabatic approximation is obtained. The motor functioning is simulated in terms of the game theory and the average trajectories of capital accumulation are obtained, which correspond to the trajectories of the average displacement of a Brownian particle due to the ratchet effect. For the chosen model, it is shown that, at low temperatures, a particle moves to the right in accordance with the simplest on-off ratchet model, while, at high temperatures, the motion reverses. A comparison of the simulation results with the values of the ratchet velocity obtained within the adiabatic approximation shows that this approximation becomes valid at sufficiently large values of the lifetimes of the states of the dichotomous process, and it turns out to be much more accurate in the high-temperature region than in the low-temperature one.

Experimental Characterization of Friction in a Negative Stiffness Nonlinear Oscillator

Nonlinear dissipative phenomena are common features of many dynamical systems and engineering applications, and their experimental characterization has always been a challenge among the research community. Within the wide range of nonlinear damping mechanisms, friction is surely one of the most common, and with a high impact on the dynamical behavior of structures. In this paper, the nonlinear identification of friction in a negative stiffness oscillator is pursued. The structure exhibits a strong nonlinear behavior, mainly due to its polynomial elastic restoring force with a negative stiffness region. This leads to an asymmetric double-well potential with two stable equilibrium positions, and the possibility of switching between them in a chaotic way. Friction plays a crucial role in this context, as it derives from the continuous sliding between the central guide and the moving mass. The system is driven through harmonic tests with several input amplitudes, in order to estimate the variations in the energy dissipated per cycle. The identification of the frictional behavior is then pursed by minimizing the errors between the experimental measurements and the model predictions, using the harmonic balance method in conjunction with a continuation technique on the forcing amplitudes.

Stochastic Resonance Observed in Aerosol Optical Depth Time Series

We analyzed the aerosol optical depth time series retrieved from daily satellite Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer measurements. The investigated geographic area includes Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. By performing second- and fourth-order statistics analyses, the dynamics can be decomposed into two sources, the main of which is the annual cycle. The residence time distribution is made of local maxima over an exponential behavior. The two successive peaks are located at about 200 and 600 days. This allows us to hypothesize a stochastic resonance phenomenon in the dynamics of aerosol optical depth. The characteristic periodicity of the resonance is on the annual timescale, and the asymmetric double-well potential is provided by two different regimes for the values of the aerosol optical depth in winter and summer time. This means that a simple, although stochastic, differential equation can represent the time evolution of the optical depth, at least concerning its component related to the annual cycle.

Scalar correlation functions for a double-well potential in de Sitter space

We use {the spectral representation of }the stochastic Starobinsky-Yokoyama approach to compute correlation functions in de Sitter space for a scalar field with a symmetric or asymmetric double-well potential. The terms in the spectral expansion are determined by the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the time-independent Fokker-Planck differential operator, and we solve them numerically. The long-distance asymptotic behaviour is given by the lowest state in the spectrum, but we demonstrate that the magnitude of the coeffients of different terms can be very different, and the correlator can be dominated by different terms at different distances. This can give rise to potentially observable cosmological signatures. In many cases the dominant states in the expansion do not correspond to small fluctuations around a minimum of the potential and are therefore not visible in perturbation theory. We discuss the physical interpretation these states, which can be present even when the potential has only one minimum.

Localization in liquid phase separation: Coarsening and stable structures.

Dynamics of pattern formation in self-organizing systems subjected to spontaneous suppression of diffusion through a recently proposed source-sink-boundary templating technique is presented based on three-dimensional numerical simulations. This template disorder is introduced to divide the system into three different subregions, i.e., a source (outer subregion) at higher potential and a sink (inner subregion) region at a lower potential with the help of a boundary which is at the highest potential. The boundary allows only one-way diffusion from source to sink so diffusion stops completely whenever the sink is filled to its capacity. This technique was shown to be able to spontaneously form stable and complex patterns in the source and the sink parts. While the technique is applicable to any self-organizing or phase-separating system whenever certain conditions are met, a physically realizable system of liquid films supported on chemically heterogeneous substrates which self-organizes through morphological phase separation is chosen to study the dynamics. Free-energy functional of this system shows an asymmetric double-well potential and the Maxwell's double tangent construction on this free energy gives rise to two distinct and finite equilibrium phases. Disorder is introduced in the form of chemical heterogeneity to divide the whole system into different subregions each consisting of two equilibrium phases, thus enabling more finite equilibrium points in the same system. The dynamics uncovers two different pathways for stable localized structures, viz., the defect and the direct pathway. Thinner films are likely to favor the defect pathway whereby the equilibrium pattern forms after coarsening, whereas thicker films will predominantly choose the direct pathway of pattern formation by phase separation. The final localized structure is same irrespective of the chosen pathway. The dynamics also shows that the patterns formed in the inner subregion part can be seen as a result of "localization" and those formed in the outer subregion are due to arrested diffusion under geometric or curvature constraints. Simple measures of localization in terms of free energy and its constituents are also presented. The identification of localization in the above systems opens up the possibility of a systematic approach to create controlled structures at nano- and submicrometer scales with desired shape and size. These structures constitute new building blocks of advanced and tailored materials.

A feedback model for relaxors

The transition from a ferroelectric to a relaxor is described. Asymmetric double-well potentials for fluctuating charges, dipoles or polar nanoregions and a feedback between these double wells are employed. Tuning the intrinsic asymmetry it is possible to describe either a ferroelectric state or a relaxor behavior. While in ferroelectrics with an ordered crystal lattice the intrinsic asymmetry is small, disorder in the amorphous state can result in double wells with higher asymmetry causing a relaxor response.

Kramers’ escape rate problem within a non-Markovian description

We compare the thermal escape rates of a Brownian particle, initially trapped into one of the two wells of an asymmetric double-well potential, for thermal Markovian and non-Markovian noise. The Markovian treatment of this problem goes originally back to the studies of Kramers in 1940 and is therefore often referred to as “Kramers’ escape rate problem”. We solve the generalized Langevin equation for the trajectories of the particles numerically and analytically for both limiting cases, Markovian and non-Markovian thermal noise. We compute the escape rate and work out the fundamental differences arising from finite correlation times of the thermal noise.
