Localized corrosion behaviour of some nickel titanium shape memory alloys in chloride environments has been studied. Potentiodynamic tests pointed out a fairly good localized corrosion resistance similar to that of Ti-6AI-4V alloy in the potential range of practical interest, whereas potentiostatic scratch tests, along with tests performed following ASTM F746 standard test method, revealed poor localized corrosion resistance of these alloys. Based on these latter tests, which can be considered to be the most significant in order to assess the actual behaviour of materials in practical conditions, localized corrosion resistance resulted to be increasing in the following order: Ni-Ti<Ni-Ti-Fe < AISI 316L < ASTM F138 ⪡ Ti-6AI-4V.
