Associative relatedness may facilitate free recall because associated words have occurred as implicit associational responses (IARs) to one another, their frequency of occurrence thereby being increased. This interpretation predicts that both recall and judged frequency of a word will increase with the number of times the word is an associate of other list words. Both predictions were confirmed. Additional results were as follows: (a) recall and judged frequency increased with increasing presentation frequency; (b) frequency discrimination was poorer at high than at low levels of presentation frequency; and, (c) discrimination of presentation frequency was poorer at 24 hr than at 0 hr.
