The Association of Serum Uric Acid with Risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019-2021.

Upper airway collapse and apneas in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) induce intermittent hypercapnia and hypoxia, eventually contributing to excessive uric acid production. This study aimed to evaluate the association between hyperuricemia and OSA in the general population via analysis of the eighth KNHANES dataset (2019-2021). OSA risk was identified via the STOP-Bang questionnaire, with a score ≥3 indicating high risk. Among 11,981 total participants, 4572 (38.2%) had a high OSA risk. Participants with a high OSA risk had higher uric acid levels compared to those with a low risk (5.5 ± 1.4 mg/dL vs. 4.8 ± 1.2 mg/dL, p < 0.001). Serum uric acid levels were positively correlated with STOP-Bang score (r: 0.317, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that hyperuricemia was associated with a high OSA risk after adjusting for confounders (odds ratio: 1.30, 95%CI: 1.11-1.53, p = 0.001). Therefore, serum uric acid levels are significantly higher in those with a high OSA risk and correlate with the risk of OSA. Further, hyperuricemia is an independently associated risk factor for high OSA risk. More research is warranted to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of hyperuricemia in OSA and to determine whether treatment targeting hyperuricemia is effective in the clinical course of OSA.

Association of Serum Uric Acid with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation: A Retrospective Study in China.

The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been widely focused on and studied in recent years. However, the exact association between SUA and AF is unclear, and the effect of gender on the association between SUA levels and AF has been controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between SUA levels and non-valvular AF (NVAF) and the potential effect of gender on it. A total of 866 NVAF patients (463 males, age 69.44 ± 8.07 years) and 646 sex-matched control patients in sinus rhythm, with no history of arrhythmia were included in this study. t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square test were used for baseline data analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve, logistic regression and Pearson correlation analysis were used for correlation analysis. Compared to controls, NVAF patients exhibited higher SUA (P<0.001). After adjusting for confounders of NVAF, SUA remained significantly associated with NVAF, regardless of gender (OR= 1.31, 95% CI 1.18-1.43, P<0.001). SUA demonstrated higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of female NVAF compared to male (area under the curve was 0.68 (95% CI 0.64-0.72, P<0.001), sensitivity 87.3%), with the optimal cut-off point identified as 5.72 mg/dL. Furthermore, SUA levels correlated with APOA1, Scr and NT-proBNP in NVAF patients. SUA levels varied significantly among NVAF subtypes. High SUA levels were independently associated with NVAF, regardless of gender. SUA exhibited higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of NVAF in females compared to males. High SUA levels may affect other NVAF-related factors and participate in the pathophysiological process of NVAF.

Association of serum uric acid with right cardiac chamber remodeling assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking in patients with connective tissue disease.

Right cardiac chamber remodeling is widespread in patients with connective tissue disease (CTD). Serum uric acid (SUA) is considered a potential independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and elevated SUA levels are often observed in patients with CTD. The correlation between SUA levels and right cardiac chamber remodeling remains unclear. This study investigated the association of SUA with right cardiac chamber remodeling as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) in CTD patients. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 104 CTD patients and 52 age- and sex-matched controls were consecutively recruited. All individuals underwent CMR imaging, and their SUA levels were recorded. The patients were divided into three subgroups based on the tertiles of SUA level in the present study. CMR-FT was used to evaluate the right atrial (RA) longitudinal strain and strain rate parameters as well as right ventricular (RV) global systolic peak strain and strain rate in longitudinal and circumferential directions for each subject. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to explore the association of SUA with RV and RA strain parameters. Compared with the controls, the CTD patients showed significantly higher SUA levels but a lower RV global circumferential strain (GCS) and RA phasic strain parameters (all p < 0.05), except the RA booster strain rate. RV GCS remained impaired even in CTD patients with preserved RV ejection fraction. Among subgroups, the patients in the third tertile had significantly impaired RV longitudinal strain (GLS), RV GCS, and RA reservoir and conduit strain compared with those in the first tertile (all p < 0.05). The SUA levels were negatively correlated with RV GLS and RV GCS as well as with RA reservoir and conduit strain and strain rates (the absolute values of β were 0.250 to 0.293, all P < 0.05). In the multivariable linear regression analysis, the SUA level was still an independent determinant of RA conduit strain (β = -0.212, P = 0.035) and RV GCS (β = 0.207, P = 0.019). SUA may be a potential risk factor of right cardiac chamber remodeling and is independently associated with impaired RA conduit strain and RV GCS in CTD patients.

Association of serum uric acid with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease stages 3–5

Background and aimsThe role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the prognosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is inconclusive. To explore the association of SUA level with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in patients with CKD. Methods and resultsLeveraging data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) and linked national death records up to December 31 2019, we explored the association of SUA with all-cause and CVD mortality using weighted cox proportional hazards regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models in patients with CKD stages 3–5. The study finally included 2644 patients with CKD stages 3–5, with a median SUA level of 6.5 mg/dL. After a median follow-up of 55 months, a total of 763 deaths were recorded, with 279 of them attributed to CVD. In the fully adjusted model, per 1 mg/dL increment in SUA concentration was found to be associated with increased HRs (95% CIs) of 1.07 (1.00, 1.14) for all-cause mortality and 1.11 (1.00, 1.24) for CVD mortality. Compared to Q2 (reference), those in Q4 had adjusted HRs of 1.72 (1.36, 2.17) for all-cause mortality and 2.17 (1.38, 3.41) for CVD mortality, while those in Q1 had adjusted HRs of 1.49 (1.19, 1.85) for all-cause mortality and 1.93 (1.26, 2.98) for CVD mortality. ConclusionsBoth higher and lower SUA levels were associated with increased risks of all-cause and CVD mortality in patients with CKD stages 3–5.

Association of Serum Uric Acid and Liver Enzymes in Adults at Tertiary Level Hospital in Bangladesh

The level of serum uric acid (SUA) has been linked to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between SUA and serum liver enzymes in a Bangladeshi adult population. This cross-sectional study was conducted among apparently healthy adults aged &gt;18 years, from March 2019 to February 2020 at the Department of Biochemistry, Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC), Dhaka. SUA, liver enzymes, lipid profile and other biochemical markers were measured in the collected samples by using standard methods. All statistical analyses were performed by using SPSS version 22.0 software and p&lt;0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 140 subjects were selected and blood sample were collected for biochemical analysis. Among them 70 were male and 70 were female. Serum uric acid (SUA), Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels were significantly (p&lt;0.001) higher in male than female group. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that there were significant positive correlation between SUA and serum ALT, AST, GGT (p&lt;0.001). However, it also showed significant positive correlation between SUA and total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), while negative correlation was found between SUA and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (p&lt;0.001). The role of SUA in the prediction of elevated liver enzymes showed area under the ROC Curve (AUC) 0.839 for ALT, 0.848 for AST and 0.809 for GGT respectively. SUA is positively related with ALT, AST, GGT in adults. More prospective studies are needed to clarify the complex relationship between SUA and liver enzymes in the general population. Associations of Serum Uric Acid to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio with Trunk Fat Mass and Visceral Fat Accumulation.

It has been reported recently that the ratio of uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (UHR) is correlated with several metabolic disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the associations of UHR with body fat content and distribution. This study enrolled 300 participants (58 men and 242 women) aged 18 to 65 years. The levels of serum uric acid and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured by standard enzymatic methods. The overall fat content and segmental fat distribution were assessed with an automatic bioelectrical impedance analyzer. In the population with obesity, the visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. Among the study population, 219 individuals (73.0%) were with obesity. The median level of UHR in individuals with obesity was 33.7% (26.2% - 45.9%), which was significantly higher than that in those without obesity [22.6% (17.0% - 34.4%), P < 0.01]. UHR was positively associated with overall fat content and segmental fat distribution parameters (all P < 0.01). In multivariate linear regression analysis, compared with body mass index, waist circumference was more closely associated with UHR (standardized β = 0.427, P < 0.001) after adjusting for confounding factors. Additionally, total fat mass (standardized β = 0.225, P = 0.002) and trunk fat mass (standardized β = 0.296, P = 0.036) were more closely linked to UHR than total fat-free mass and leg fat mass, respectively. In the population with obesity, VFA was independently correlated with UHR (P < 0.01), while SFA was not associated with UHR. UHR was significantly associated with overall fat content and trunk fat accumulation. In the population with obesity, UHR was positively associated with VFA. Attention should be paid to the role of excessive trunk fat mass in the relationship between UHR and metabolic disorders.

Serum uric acid was non-linearly associated with the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death in individuals with coronary heart disease: a large prospective cohort study.

To investigate the association of serum uric acid (SUA) with all-cause and cardiovascular death in individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD). In this prospective cohort study, 1556 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2015) were included in the analysis. Multivariate COX regression analysis, restricted cubic spline plot (RCS) and threshold effect were used to investigate the association between SUA and all-cause and cardiovascular death in individuals with CHD. In the fully adjusted model, when SUA was regarded as a continuous variable, it was closely associated with the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death (P < 0.01). When all participants were divided into four groups according to the quartile of SUA, compared with Q1 group, only individuals in Q4 group had higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death (P = 0.002 and 0.034). The following subgroup analysis showed that the association between SUA and all-cause death risk was still statistically significant in individuals over 60 years old, male, with hypertension, without diabetes and with chronic kidney disease, while the association with cardiovascular death risk only persisted in individuals over 60 years old and male (P < 0.05). Further sensitivity analysis showed that SUA was still closely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death, whether as a continuous variable or a classified variable (P = 0.007 and 0.044). RCS analysis revealed that SUA had a nonlinear association with all-cause and cardiovascular death risk (P for nonlinearity < 0.01). Threshold effect analysis showed that SUA below 345 umol/L was negatively associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death risk (P < 0.05), while SUA above 345 umol/L was positively associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death risk (P < 0.001), and the 2-piecewise regression model was better than the 1-line regression model (P for likelihood ratio test < 0.05). SUA had a nonlinear association with all-cause and cardiovascular death risk in individuals with CHD.

Association of serum uric acid with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in obstructive sleep apnea

The study investigated the association between Serum Uric Acid (SUA) levels and all-cause as well as cardiovascular mortality in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This prospective cohort study enrolled participants with OSA from four cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2008, and 2015–2018. A weighted Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Additionally, multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) models were employed to examine nonlinear relationships between SUA and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Among the 5,584 OSA participants included in the study, covering the four NHANES cycles and with a median follow-up of 4.333 years, a total of 537 deaths were observed, including 108 deaths attributed to cardiovascular disease. Comparing the fourth quartile (Q4) of uric acid levels, both the fifth quartile (Q5) (aHRs = 1.51, 95% CI [1.08, 2.12]) and the second quartile (Q2) (aHRs = 1.53, 95% CI [1.04, 2.25]) of uric acid levels were independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Furthermore, comparing the fourth quartile (Q4) of uric acid levels, the second quartile (Q2) (aHRs = 2.40, 95% CI [1.08, 5.35]) of uric acid levels were independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. The RCS model demonstrated a U-shaped pattern in the association between SUA and all-cause mortality in OSA, with an inflection point observed at 5.83 mg/dl. The findings of this study suggest a U-shaped association between serum SUA levels and all-cause mortality and nonlinearity association between serum SUA levels and all-cause mortality. Further studies are warranted to determine the causal relationship between SUA levels and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Abstract 12593: Associations of Serum Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Events in a Clinical Trial of IL-1β Blockade

Background: Serum uric acid (SUA) associates with CV events, mortality, and gout. We assessed whether SUA predicts CV risk in a trial of IL-1β inhibition with canakinumab, a therapy known to reduce both CV events and gout. Aims: To validate associations between SUA and CV risk in a large cohort with chronic CAD and determine whether these associations were altered by IL-1β blockade or baseline renal function. Methods: The Canakinumab Antiinflammatory Thrombosis Outcome Study (CANTOS) randomized 10,061 patients with prior MI and hsCRP ≥ 2 mg/L to canakinumab 50 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg, or placebo subcutaneously every four weeks. SUA levels were obtained at baseline. Cox proportional hazards models compared the outcomes of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), CV death (CVD), and all-cause mortality (ACM) among those with baseline SUA ≤ 6.8 mg/dL, 6.8- 9.0 mg/dL, and ≥ 9.0 mg/dL (format: HR (95% CI); p). This analysis was repeated separately within canakinumab, placebo, eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min, and eGFR &lt; 60 mL/min sub-groups. Results: High SUA associated with MACE (1.66 (1.38-1.99); p&lt;0.0001), CVD (2.52 (1.98-3.21); p&lt;0.0001), and ACM (2.43 (2.01-2.94); p&lt;0.0001) compared to low SUA. These associations were minimally attenuated after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, LDL-C, and hsCRP. After further adjusting for eGFR and diuretic use, high SUA independently predicted CVD and ACM. In the IL-1β blockade arm, high SUA associated with MACE (1.82 (1.46-2.26); p&lt;0.0001), CVD (2.80 (2.10-3.73); p&lt;0.0001), and ACM (2.72 (2.17-3.40); p&lt;0.0001). In participants with normal eGFR, high SUA associated with CVD and ACM, but not MACE. Conclusions: These data from a large cohort of patients with chronic CAD confirm that individuals with elevated SUA have increased CV risk despite aggressive medical therapies. IL-1β blockade did not modify these associations. Future trials may consider inclusion of patients with high SUA and CKD as a method to increase absolute risk.

Associations of serum uric acid with hypertension status, stages, phenotypes and progressions among Chinese middle-aged and elderly

Background and aimsNo consensus has been reached on the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and hypertension. This study aimed to investigate the associations between SUA and hypertension, including its status, stages, phenotypes and progressions, among middle-aged and older Chinese. Methods and resultsData were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011–2015. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between SUA and hypertension status. Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the associations of SUA with hypertension stages, phenotypes and hypertension status progressions. Models were adjusted for potential confounders and stratified by sex. A total of 7931 individuals aged ≥45 years were included, with 39.16 % of hypertension. Significant associations were found of SUA with stage2 and above hypertension (quartile 4 [Q4] vs quartile 1 [Q1]: odds ratio 1.78, 95 % confidence interval 1.31–2.42, P < 0.001), and systolic diastolic hypertension (SDH) (Q4 vs Q1: 1.53, 1.14–2.06, P = 0.005). In sex stratification, significant associations were found between SUA and stage2 and above hypertension and SDH only for men. Moreover, higher quartiles of baseline SUA showed increased risks of maintained hypertension from 2011 to 2015 (Q3 vs Q1: 1.23, 1.03–1.48, P = 0.024; Q4 vs Q1: 1.73, 1.43–2.10, P < 0.001). ConclusionHigher SUA was associated with hypertension and maintained hypertension among Chinese middle-aged and elderly. Sex-specific associations of SUA with hypertension stages and phenotypes were observed. Regular measurement of SUA in clinical practice may indicate hypertension and its progression, particularly among men.

Association of serum uric acid with prognosis in patients with myocardial infarction: an update systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundThe prognostic significance of serum uric acid (SUA) in individuals who have experienced myocardial infarction (MI) remains a subject of academic debate. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of immediate and long-term adverse outcomes in individuals with elevated levels of uric acid (UA) following a diagnosis of MI.MethodThis study conducted a literature search from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Medline, Cochrane Library, Emcrae, and Scopus to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prognostic impact of MI with a hyper SUA to assess short-term (30-day or in-hospital) and long-term mortality, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and its adverse event rate in relation to SUA. The literature search was conducted up until April 2023. A random effects model and risk ratio (RR) were used as epidemiological indicators. For indicators with low disease rates, treatment intensity was reduced and RR was considered equivalent to odds ratio (OR). Hazard Ratio (HR), RR, and OR extracted from the data were simultaneously subjected to multivariable adjustment for confounding factors. In addition, P values for all original hypotheses were extracted and a meta-analysis was conducted. High SUA was defined as SUA levels equal to or greater than 420 μmol/L (7.0 mg/dL) for males and equal to or greater than 357 μmol/L (6.0 mg/dL) for females. The quality of the literature was evaluated using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS).ResultsThis comprehensive study included a total of 41 investigations, involving a large sample size of 225,600 individuals who had experienced MI. The findings from the meta-analysis reveal that patients diagnosed with hyperuricemia have significantly increased rates of short-term mortality (RR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.86, 2.48) and short-term incidence of MACE (RR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.65–2.11). Furthermore, long-term adverse outcomes, including all-cause mortality (RR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.40–1.51) and incidence of MACE (RR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.35–1.52), were also found to be higher in this specific patient population.ConclusionPatients diagnosed with MI and elevated SUA levels exhibit a heightened incidence of MACE during their hospital stay. Furthermore, these individuals also experience elevated rates of in-hospital mortality and mortality within one year of hospitalization. However, it is important to note that further randomized controlled trials are necessary to validate and authenticate these findings.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by insulin deficiency or peripheral resistance resulting in hyperglycemia. Diabetic patients have increased rates of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease, and are two to three times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD). Serum uric acid (SUA) has been known to be associated with cardiovascular diseases. "Atherogenic index of plasma" (AIP) is considered to be a very sensitive predictor of future cardiovascular events. The study was done to evaluate the association of serum uric acid and atherogenic index of plasma in diabetic patients. A total of 315 diabetic patients were selected as study subjects based on predefined enrollment criteria. The patients were separated into groups according to their serum uric acid levels. Serum uric acid levels under 6 mg/dL were considered as normal. AIP was calculated as the logarithmically transformed ratio of triglyceride to high density lipoprotein cholesterol. The study found that AIP levels were significantly high in high SUA group compared to normal SUA group. The study showed a positive significant correlation between AIP and SUA (r=0.347, P&lt;0.001) in diabetes patients. Additionally, in binary logistic regression analysis, AIP was found to be independently associated with high UA levels. Serum uric acid to high-density lipoprotein ratio as a novel indicator of inflammation is correlated with the presence and severity of metabolic syndrome: A large-scale study.

We investigated the association of serum uric acid to high-density lipoprotein ratio (UHR) with the presence and severity of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among MASHAD cohort participants. In this cross-sectional study, according to International Diabetes Federation criteria, the cohort participants were divided into MetS (+) and MetS (-) groups. MetS (+) were classified into Group 1 (those with 3 MetS criteria), Group 2 (those with 4 MetS criteria) and Group 3 (those with 5 MetS criteria). UHR was compared among the groups. Data related to 9637 subjects including 3824 MetS (+) and 5813 MetS (-) were analysed. The mean UHR was significantly higher (p < .001) in the MetS (+) group compared with the MetS (-) group. UHR increased as the MetS severity increased (p < .001). ROC analysis revealed that UHR greater than 9.5% has 89.07% sensitivity and 77.03% specificity in differentiating MetS (-) from MetS (+) subjects. Among MASHAD cohort study participants, a significant association between UHR and MetS was found. Furthermore, there is an increase in UHR as the severity of MetS increases. Association of serum uric acid with hepatic steatosis detected by controlled attenuation parameter in the United States population

BackgroundThe relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been previously reported. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) has better diagnostic performance than ultrasonography for assessing hepatic steatosis. The association of SUA with hepatic steatosis detected by CAP is worth further study.MethodsThe US population aged 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was assessed. Hepatic steatosis was evaluated by the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). NAFLD status was defined as CAP values of 268 dB/m without hepatitis B or C virus infection or considerable alcohol consumption. Multiple imputations were performed to fill in the missing covariate values. Linear regression, logistic regression, and smooth curve fitting were used to examine the association.ResultsIn total, 3919 individuals participated in this study. There was a positive association between SUA (µmol/L) and CAP (β = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.12-0.17, P < 0.01). After stratification by sex, a significant relationship between SUA and CAP existed in both males (β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.09-0.16, P < 0.01) and females (β = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.14-0.20, P < 0.01) after multiple imputation. The inflection points of the threshold effect of SUA on CAP were 487.7 µmol/L in males and 386.6 µmol/L in females. There was a positive association between SUA (mg/dL) and NAFLD (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.23-1.37, P < 0.01). After stratification by race, positive relationships were also observed. Meanwhile, a positive relationship existed between hyperuricemia and NAFLD (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.64-2.30, P < 0.01). The positive relationship was more significant in females than in males (P for interaction < 0.01).ConclusionsThere was a positive association between SUA and CAP, as well as between SUA and NAFLD. Subgroup studies stratified by sex and ethnicity demonstrated that the effects were consistent.

Association of serum uric acid with anemia in U.S. adults: a cross-sectional study using secondary data

BackgroundHigh serum uric acid (SUA) is a risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Abnormal SUA have been correlated with a significant increase in mortality. Anemia is an independent predictor of mortality and CVD. To date, no study has investigated the relationship between SUA and anemia. Here, we explored the correlation between SUA and anemia in the American population.MethodsThe cross-sectional study involved 9205 US adults from NHANES (2011–2014). The relationship between SUA and anemia was explored using multivariate linear regression models. Two-piecewise linear regression model, generalized additive models (GAM) and smooth curve fitting were performed to explore the non-linear relationships between SUA and anemia.ResultsWe found a U-shaped non-linear relationship between SUA and anemia. The inflection point of the SUA concentration curve was 6.2 mg/dL. The ORs (95% CIs) for anemia on the left and right of the inflection point were 0.86 (0.78–0.95) and 1.33 (1.16–1.52), respectively. The 95% CI of inflection point was 5.9-6.5 mg/dL. The findings showed that both genders presented a U-shaped correlation. Safe ranges of SUA in men and women were 6-6.5 and 4.3–4.6 mg/dL, respectively.ConclusionsBoth high and low SUA levels were correlated with increased risk of anemia, and a U-shaped relationship was observed between SUA and anemia.

Association of serum uric acid with risk of stroke in US adults: A cross-sectional study from NHANES 1999–2020

Background and aimsThe validity of high uric acid levels as an independent cause of stroke remains controversial, and the association between its low concentration and stroke is unclear. This study determines how different serum uric acid (SUA) levels are associated with stroke risk. MethodsThis cross-sectional study used continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data in the United States during 1999–2020. The SUA levels of 6.0, 6.8, and 9.0 mg/dL were all considered as cut-off points. Restricted cubic spline interpolation and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the different associations. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of multiple factors on the outcomes. ResultsThe study included 23,413 participants aged ≥ 20 years. A J-shaped curve existed between SUA and stroke risk, and the risk of stroke was positively correlated with SUA levels in the overall population. Subgroup analysis of all adults in the SUA 6.8–9.0 mg/dL group showed that stroke risk for non-Hispanic white, obese, ex-smoker, and heavy drinking groups was increased, but for the other Hispanic group was reduced. In the SUA < 6.0 mg/dL group, stroke risk for ex-smoker, heavy drinkers, and no chronic kidney disease groups was increased. ConclusionOur findings indicate a J-shaped relationship between SUA levels and stroke risk. Low and high SUA levels increased stroke risk for different populations, except in the other Hispanic population. Early SUA management is highly significant for stroke prevention in high-risk populations.
