Near the mouth of the Var, the Tyrrhenian dune deposits change to a thick series of limons inland The lithological sequence consists of 7 superposed terms. It has supplied rich faunae of land Molluscs whose several species are extinguished. The interpretation of malacological associations, level after level, allows to identify a complex paleoclimatic development : three temperate periods, one of which is a climatic optimum, alternate with climatic deterioration phases. The zonation established out of the fossil species distribution joins into that succession, which is assigned to the late Rissian glaciation, to the Riss-Wurm interglacial and to the period preceding the Wurmian glacial. With the help of new field arguments and on the basis of the proposed biozonation, the first two phases can be correlated with the Eutyrrhenian and with the Neo-tyrrhenian. This schematic succession moreover corresponds with that recently obtained out of foraminifera associations observed on a Tyrrhenian sea core. Consequently, the Nice continental sequence can be accurately located on the oceanic scale of the latest climatic cycle.
