History of Subsection Ea: Extension

As the Entomological Society of America celebrates its centennial as a professional organization, several other birthdays are being celebrated that have relevance to extension entomologists in the United States. 1Wohundred years ago, this young nation inaugurated its first president, George Washington; 75 years ago the Smith–Lever act (1914) passed Congress to create the Extension Service; and 61 years ago the Section of Extension officially became a functional organization within the American Association of Economic Entomologists. Each has proven its value over time, has strengthened its resolve to better serve humanity with each new challenge, and must continue to change if we are to fulfill the expectations of our clientele in the 1990s and the next century—as a nation, as a professional society, and as the disseminator of technology for the land grant system.

History of the Southwestern Branch

The Inception of the Idea for establishment of the Southwestern Branch predated the actual recognition of the branch by probably more than 20 years. During this time entomologists of the southwestern states were more or less banded together in the Texas Entomological Society (TES). The history of TES was written by Burke (1980) with considerable emphasis on the activities of the society as they related to gaining branch recognition in the American Association of Economic Entomologists. According to that history, some TES members had in mind when the society was first formed in 1928 that it would eventually become the Southwestern Branch of AAEE. Many of the members of the TES were also members of the Cotton States Branch of AAEE, but for several reasons they believed that this association did not as fully satisfy their needs as their own regional organization would. First, most of the meetings of the Cotton States Branch were held east of the Mississippi River, presenting problems for travel by the southwesterners, The entomologists of the Southwest also were confronted with many insect problems different from those of the Southeast and they thought that these problems could be more effectively addressed by a regional organization.

History of Subsection Ca: Biological Control

The Establishment of Subsection Ca coincided with the formation of the new Entomological Society of America in 1953 (JEE 1954, 47(1):195–203). However, its historical roots date back to letter written by Paul DeBach in 1948 requesting that the American Association of Economic Entomologists form a section devoted to biological control (JEE 1949, 42(1):181). This letter was read at the 1948 AAEE annual meeting in New York and discussed; no formal action was taken on the proposal until the following year.

History of Section D: Medical and Veterinary Entomology

Planning for a medical entomology organization within the American Association of Economic Entomologists began with the appointment of a committee composed of F. S. Blanton, S. F. Carpenter, A. B. Gurney, W. W. Middlekauff, J. W. Enke, J. D. DeCoursey, Donald McCreary, and G. H. Bradley (chairman), Dec. 29, 1947. This committee presented a petition to the Executive Committee of AAEE recommending that the field of medical entomology, including veterinary entomology, receive recognition by the association.

History of the National Office

The society has changed greatly since the first meeting in 1889 of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. When President C. V. Riley called that group to order in Washington, D.C., the association numbered 105 members. By 1908, one year after the founding of the old Entomological Society of America by J. H. Comstock, AAEE had about 350 members and ESA had some 500 members.

Publications of the Entomological Society of America

“This initial number of the Annals of the Entomological Society of America marks the beginning of an enterprise which it is hoped may become of the greatest value to entomological science in America” (Annals 1908, 1(1):1). These introductory comments were published in the first issue of the Annals, which was founded by the old Entomological Society of America. The Journal of Economic Entomology also began publishing in 1908, under the auspices of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. When these two societies merged in 1953, the Annals and JEE were the sole scientific periodicals of the new ESA. Since 1953, ESA has continued to use its publications as the primary vehicle to meet its constitutional charge to promote the science of entomology and all its subdisciplines. Currently, ESA publishes four bimonthly journals, a quarterly magazine, a series called Miscellaneous Publications, an annual edition of Insecticide & Acaricide Tests, as well as the Thomas Say Foundation Monographs. Publications, therefore, remain a significant activity of ESA, which is expected to spend about 600,000 in 1989 for typesetting and printing.

Publications of the Entomological Society of America: A Descriptive Study of Patterns of Use

The Entomological Society of America(ESA) originated in 1953 from the merger of two national entomological organizations: the American Association of Economic Entomologists, established in 1889, and the Entomological Society of America, established in 1906. In 1910 these two societies together had only 411 members, but by 1950, 2,629 members were represented. The ESA now has nearly 9,000 members (ESA Bulletin 1986), representing a diversity of backgrounds, interests, and opinions on scientific and political topics.

Brief History of Southeastern Branch, Entomological Society of America

The Southeastern Branch had its beginning with a group of entomologists concerned with depredation caused by the boll weevil. These entomologists met on 2 August 1904, elected C. E. Chambliss of South Carolina as chairman, and organized the Association of Official Entomologists of the Cotton Belt, later known as Association of Cotton States Entomologists. The group was active during the ensuing years, and was affiliated with the American Association of Economic Entomologists as the Cotton States Branch on 31 December 1925. The name was changed to Southeastern Branch in 1959. An early history of the Cotton States Branch was written by Snapp (1941),and information on growth and changes in the Southeastern Branch was presented at the 43rd meeting of the Branch by Beckham (1969).

The Silver Anniversary of the Entomological Society of America

During 1977 the Entomological Society of America celebrates its 25th year. It came into being on January 1, 1953 with the amalgamation of the American Association of Economic Entomologists (1889–1952) and the former Entomological Society of America (1906–1952). The first meeting of the new organization was held in Los Angeles, California on December 7–10, 1953 with C. E Palm of Cornell University as President.

The Universal Solution

We normally think of the birthday of the Entomological Society of America as the dates of origin of our two parent societies, the Entomological Society of America in 1906 and the American Association of Economic Entomologists in 1889. However, the latter organization can easily be traced back to a predecessor, the Entomological Club of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Entomological Club had its first meeting in Detroit, Michigan on August 10, 1875 (Can. Entomol. 7:177–85) and went out of existence with the establishment of AAEE. Thus, last year we completed a century of organized entomological society activities at the national level.

On the Threshold of the Second Quarter Century

During this year 1977 it is worthwhile to pause and reflect on the origins, objectives and direction of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) as well as of the science it represents. Among the biological societies, aside from those that are clearly labeled agricultural or horticultural, ESA is unique in that its earliest component was avowedly concerned with applied science. This was the American Association of Economic Entomologists, organized in 1889 and merged with the American Entomological Society in 1953. The latter was not organized until 1906 and was composed of amateur entomologists, taxonomists, and university entomologists not engaged in applied research.

History, Growth, and Change in the Southeastern Branch

According to records this is the 43rd Meeting of the Branch. During the January 1924 meeting of the Association of Cotton States Entomologists it was voted to apply for recognition as a Branch of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. The application was approved in December 1925 and the organization became known as the Cotton States Branch. The first meeting after receiving Branch status was held in Atlanta in February 1926. Based on a review of proceedings of annual meetings the Southeastern is the second oldest branch of the parent organization. It is surpassed in time of affiliation only by the Pacific Branch.

Entomology in the Pacific Branch--Plus and Minus Fifty Years: History of the Pacific Branch

Prior to 1915, an organization known as the Pacific Slope Association of Economic Entomologists had existed for some years on the west coast. Desiring to expand their activities, they consulted with the American Association of Economic Entomologists about consolidation. As a result, a special meeting of the A.A.E.E. and the Pacific Slope Association was held in Berkeley in August 1915. After some discussion a resolution was drawn up recommending that the P.S.A. be accepted as a branch of the A.A.E.E., to be known as the Pacific Slope Branch. This recommendation was accepted by the A.A.E.E. at its regular meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in December 1915; thus the first branch of our society was formed.

Common Names of Insects Approved by the Entomological Society of America

This list contains all common names approved by the Society for insects and other invertebrate animals commonly included in the field of entomology. It supersedes earlier lists sponsored by the Society and by the former American Association of Economic Entomologists. Names have been added and other changes made where required by action of the Committee and Society or by improved knowledge of taxonomy. Authors' surnames are given in full in accordance with a decision announced earlier.

An ESA Branch Meeting with International Aspects

The Southwestern Branch was created as a Branch of the American Association of Economic Entomologists in 1951. When the Association merged with the Entomological Society of America 2 years later, the Southwestern group became a Branch of the Entomological Society of America, which was retained as the name for the two merged Societies. Since its creation in 1951, the Branch has consisted of all members in Mexico, except those in Sonora, Sinaloa and Baja California, and those in the States of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. According to R. H. Nelson, Executive Secretary, ESA, approximately 40 members of the parent Society reside in Mexico. Some of the membership consists of USDA and other personnel from the States, but most of is made up of entomologists from Mexican governmental agencies, educational institutions and industry.

Your Society Takes a Forward Look

Four years have elapsed since amalgamation was effected of the two largest entomological societies in America–the old Entomological Society of America and the American Association of Economic Entomologists. During that period most of the problems inherent in such a situation have been ironed out. The major problem still confronting the new Entomological Society of America, is the revision of the Constitution and By-Laws, by amendment, in a manner acceptable to both the academic and to the economic entomologists now making up the membership. Basically, this revision revolves around assurance of proper representation of both groups on the Governing Board, in directing the affairs of the Society.

This historic meeting, the first annual meeting of the new Entomological Society of America, is a happy occasion. The wishes of the majority of our fellow workers have brought together, through consolidation, our two great organizations of the past, the American Association of Economic Entomologists (1889–1952) and the Entomological Society of America (1906–1952), into a single new Society whose interests- and work will cover all phases of entomology. I think it is fitting that such union take place as we enter the second century of professional entomology in this country. In the years that have passed, entomology, under the leadership of the men who founded and promoted our two beloved professional societies, has made its fair share of contributions to our national welfare. As we enter the second half of the twentieth century, with its present great struggle between two strong ideologies for the allegiance of the hearts and minds of men everywhere, we in entomology can share the satisfaction that our greatest contributions to man' s well-being lie in the years ahead. The full realization of this great service rests in a large measure with the members of the Entomological Society of America. I earnestly hope that our dedication to duty will make the profession and our Society truly great partners cooperating with other sciences in serving the welfare of mankind everywhere.
