Association of ABO blood types with ST resolution following thrombolysis in acute ST elevation myocardial infarction.

Introduction: There is paucity of data about the possible role of ABO antigen in response to pharmacologic reperfusion therapy in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and its relationship with ST segment recovery; thus, we aimed to evaluate the association of ABO antigen with ST-segment resolution in STEMI patients treated with thrombolysis. Methods: This prospective and observational study was conducted between March 2016 and September 2017 on patients with first acute STEMI within the first 12 hours after onset of symptoms treated with thrombolysis. Myocardial reperfusion success was determined by single-lead ST-segment recovery in 12-lead ECG. Patients were considered as responders if ST-segment resolved ≥50% or were assigned as non-responders if ST-segment resolution was <50%. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to examine the contribution of "A" and "B" blood group antigens to ST-segment resolution and the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular event (MACCE). Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported for each variable. Results: In this study 303 patients (187 males and 116 females) with a mean age of 56.6 ± 16.8 (ranging from 39 to 87 years) were enrolled. 184 patients (60.7%) were responders and 119 patients (39.2%) were non-responders. The presence of either A (4.5 folds increase) or B (5.4 folds increase) antigen was associated with a higher likelihood of a response to thrombolytic therapy, while had not effect on the occurrence of MACCE. Conclusion: We conclude that the presence of A or B blood group antigens is associated with a better response to thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute STEMI. This finding may imply a higher likelihood for thrombotic occlusion of coronary arteries in patients who have either A or B antigen in their blood.

Association of ABO blood types and novel obesity markers in healthy adolescents.

INTRODUCTION:Association of ABO blood type with body mass index (BMI) was explored in the past studies, but literature on association of novel obesity markerssuch as total body fat and lean body mass (LBM) is scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship of ABO blood types with novel obesity markers in normal adolescents.MATERIALS AND METHODS:A cross-sectional study was done on 387 medical students. Bio-impedance analysis (BIA)-derived novel obesity markers such as body fat percent (BFP) and lean body mass (LBM) were recorded. Blood typing was done using slide-agglutination method. Mean and SD were calculated; analysis of variance and Chi-square (χ2) correlation were used to determine the relationship between ABO blood types and obesity markers.RESULTS:Highest propensity for BFP and LBM was seen in blood groups AB and B (25.09 ± 8.92 and 44.45 ± 6.91) respectively. Highly significant (P < 0.001) differences were observed in the values of BFP and LBM in normal and obese participants across ABO blood types. Prevalence of obesity did not show significant relationship (χ2 = 2.069; P = 0.913) with ABO blood types.CONCLUSIONS:Unlike BMI, novel obesity markers (BFP and LBM) significantly differ across ABO blood groups in normal and obese population. The findings suggest that ABO blood type might have role in determining body composition. This will be helpful in recognition of the participants at the risk of obesity on the basis of their blood groups.

Validating the role of ABO blood type in risk of perioperative venous thromboembolism after radical cystectomy.

To validate the relationship between ABO blood type and risk of VTE post-RC in a large retrospective database. Patients with urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) who underwent RC (intent-to-cure) for whom ABO blood type was available between 2003 and 2015 were identified from our IRB-approved database. VTE was defined as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) within 90days of surgery. VTE prophylaxis consisted of immediate postoperative Coumadin (2003-2009), unfractionated heparin (UFH) during hospitalization (2009-2015), and UFH during hospitalization plus 4weeks of enoxaparin after discharge (2013-2015). Univariable and multivariable analyses of the association of ABO blood type with postoperative, symptomatic VTE and oncologic outcomes were performed. Of 1341 patients, 595 (44.4%) were ABO type O and 746 (55.6%) were non-O (A, B and AB). 90 patients were diagnosed with VTE within 90days of surgery (6.7%) (43% DVT-only, 57% PE ± DVT). On multivariable analysis non-O blood type was associated with a nearly twofold increased risk of VTE (OR = 1.94, 95% CI 1.215-3.098, p = 0.004). No difference in recurrence-free survival or overall survival was seen between ABO groups. Non-O blood type is an independent, non-modifiable risk factor for postoperative VTE after RC. More comprehensive counseling and thromboprophylaxis should be considered in this high-risk group.

Lack of association between the distribution of ABO blood groups and nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a population of Southern China

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is endemic in Southern China and Southeast Asia. The ABO blood group antigens are chemical constituents on the surface of red blood cells and various epithelial cells. Several studies have described the association of ABO blood types with multiple types of human cancer. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the incidence of NPC and ABO blood groups. We retrospectively analyzed the files of 1136 pathologically confirmed patients with NPC and 1024 cancer-free healthy controls, including the information of serologically determined blood group. The distribution of blood groups between patients with NPC and the control group was determined. The Chi-square test was applied to assess the distribution of age, gender, smoking, family history, and ABO blood groups between the NPC and the controls. Pearson's correlation was performed to evaluate the correlation between ABO blood groups and clinical stages. There was no significant difference in age, smoking, family history, and ABO blood group between patients with NPC and the control group (P > 0.05). ABO blood groups were also not associated with NPC stages (P = 0.506). However, the proportion of males with NPC was higher than that of control group (P < 0.01). The blood group types were not associated with increased risk of NPC and NPC stages in a population of Southern China.

Correlation of ABO blood groups with spontaneous recanalization in acute myocardial infarction

Objectives. Although previous studies have demonstrated the relationship between ABO blood groups and cardiovascular disease, the association of ABO blood type with spontaneous recanalization (SR) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not been previously investigated. Methods. We performed an initial exploratory study on the association of ABO blood groups with the presence of SR in 1209 patients with AMI. They were divided into two groups according to the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) grades: no-SR group (TIMI 0–1, n = 442) and SR group (TIMI 2–3, n = 767). To confirm our primary findings, data from a second AMI population (n = 200) was analyzed. Results. In the initial data, SR group had a significantly higher percentage of blood type O and a lower percentage of blood type A compared to the no-SR group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that blood type O was positively associated with SR (odds ratio: 1.40, 95% confidence interval: 1.05–1.87, p = .02), and this finding was confirmed in our second population. Conclusion. The present study demonstrates that blood type O was independently and positively associated with an open culprit artery in patients with AMI, suggesting that the ABO blood type is not only associated with the susceptibility to coronary artery disease but also to spontaneous reperfusion in AMI patients.

ABO blood group is associated with peripheral arterial disease in African Americans: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

IntroductionPeripheral artery disease (PAD) affects 8.5 million Americans and thus improving our understanding of PAD is critical to developing strategies to reduce disease burden.The objective of the study was to determine the association of ABO blood type with ankle brachial index (ABI) as well as prevalent and incident PAD in a multi-ethnic cohort. MethodsThe Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis includes non-Hispanic White, African, Hispanic, and Chinese Americans aged 45–84. ABO blood type was estimated using ABO genotypes in 6027 participants who had ABI assessed at the baseline exam. Associations with ABO blood type were evaluated categorically and under an additive genetic model by number of major ABO alleles. After excluding those with ABI>1.4, prevalent PAD was defined as ABI≤0.9 at baseline and incident PAD as ABI≤0.9 for 5137 participants eligible for analysis. ResultsThere were 222 prevalent cases and 239 incident cases of PAD. In African Americans, each additional copy of the A allele was associated with a 0.02 lower baseline ABI (p=0.006). Each copy of the A allele also corresponded to 1.57-fold greater odds of prevalent PAD (95% CI, 1.17–2.35; p=0.004), but was not associated with incident PAD. No associations were found in other racial/ethnic groups for ABI, prevalent PAD, or incident PAD across all races/ethnicities. ConclusionsBlood type A and the A allele count were significantly associated with baseline ABI and prevalent PAD in African Americans. Further research is needed to confirm and study the mechanisms of this association in African Americans.

Association of ABO Blood Types and Clinicopathological Features of Prostate Cancer.

Purpose To investigate the association between ABO blood types and clinicopathological characteristics in patients with prostate cancer (PC). Methods A total of 237 pathologically diagnosed PC patients were enrolled. All patients were classified as low–middle or high-risk group. The correlation of ABO blood types with high-risk PC was determined by univariate and multivariate regression analysis. Results Data indicated 144 (85.7%) patients were stratified as high risk in the non-O group, while 50 (72.5%) patients in the O group (p = 0.025). However, there was no significant difference regarding PSA, Gleason score, stage, or metastasis between O and non-O group (p > 0.05). Univariate logistic regression analyses revealed PSA, Gleason score, and blood type non-O were all correlated with high-risk PC (OR = 1.139, p < 0.001; OR = 9.465, p < 0.001; OR = 2.280, p = 0.018, resp.). In the stepwise multivariate regression analysis, the association between blood type non-O and high-risk PC remained significant (OR = 33.066, 95% CI 2.391–457.323, and p = 0.009) after adjusting for confounding factors as well as PSA and Gleason score. Conclusion The present study firstly demonstrated that non-O blood type was at higher risk of aggressive PC compared with O type, suggesting that PC patients with non-O blood type should receive more attention in clinical practice.

The Role of ABO Blood Group in Cerebral Vasospasm, Associated Intracranial Hemorrhage, and Delayed Cerebral Ischemia in 470 Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm usually presents with an acute onset and requires multidisciplinary intensive care treatment and the overall death and disability rates are high. The ABO blood type is known to play an important role in hemostasis, thrombosis, and vascular NO response. The aspect of ABO blood type in onset, clinical progress, and outcome after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is largely unexplored. We conducted this study to elucidate the association of ABO blood type with the occurrence and outcome of aneurysmal SAH. In our retrospective study, 470 patients with aneurysmal SAH treated at our institution were included. We performed a χ2 test for comparison between blood types and World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies admission status, cerebral vasospasm, delayed infarction, associated intracerebral hemorrhage and Fisher grade for analysis for their association with SAH. No significant difference between blood type and the reviewed variables for SAH outcome were identified: World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies admission status (odds ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.7-1.6; P= 0.56); SAH-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (odds ratio, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.5-1.3; P= 0.36); cerebral vasospasm (odds ratio, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.7-1.6; P= 0.71); DCI (odds ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 0.8-1.8; P= 0.30); Fisher grade (odds ratio, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.7-1.6; P= 0.19). Although a possible relationship between the ABO blood group and the clinical course of patients with SAH was hypothesized, our study showed no significant influence of patient's ABO blood type on cerebral vasospasm onset, SAH-associated intracerebral hemorrhage, or delayed infarction.

The relationship between helminth infections and low haemoglobin levels in Ethiopian children with blood type A.

The current study was conducted to evaluate the nature of association of ABO blood type with helminth infection and related reduction in haemoglobin concentration. Stool samples were collected from 403 school-age children attending Tikur Wuha Elementary School from February to April 2011. Helminth infection was examined using formol-ether concentration and thick Kato-Katz (two slides per stool specimen) techniques. Haemoglobin level was determined using a HemoCue machine and ABO blood type was determined using the antisera haemagglutination test. Nutritional status was assessed using height and weight measurements. Out of 403 children examined, 169, 120, 96 and 18 had blood type O, A, B and AB, respectively. The prevalences of helminth infections were 46.9% for hookworm, 24.6% for Schistosoma mansoni, 4.2% for Ascaris lumbricoides, 1.7% for Trichuris trichiura and 58.3% for any helminth species. The relative odds of infection with at least one helminth species was significantly higher among children with blood type A (adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 2.10; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.28-3.45) or blood type B (AOR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.22-3.56) as compared to children with blood type O. Among children infected with helminths, mean haemoglobin concentration was lower in those with blood type A than those with blood type O (β, -0.36; 95% CI, -0.72 to -0.01). The relative odds of hookworm infection (AOR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.08-2.92) and related reduction in haemogobin levels (β, -0.45; 95% CI, -0.84 to -0.04) was higher among children with blood type A as compared to those with blood type O. Although the difference was not significant, the relative odds of S. mansoni or A. lumbricoides infections and related reduction in haemoglobin levels was also higher in children with blood type A or B as compared to children with blood type O. In conclusion, children with blood type A are associated with an increased risk of helminth, particularly hookworm, infection and related reduction in haemoglobin level. The mechanisms by which blood type A makes children susceptible to helminth infection and a related reduction in haemoglobin level ought to be investigated.

Association of ABO blood types and clinicopathological features of ureteral transitional cell carcinoma in a single-center in China.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of ABO blood types and clinicopathological characteristics of patients with ureteral transitional cell carcinoma. In our study, an entire cohort of 239 patients who were pathological diagnosed as ureteral transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) between February 2002 and March 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. Variables including demographic features, tumor grades, tumor stages, type of surgery and number of tumors as well as ABO blood types status were evaluated. The relationship between the ABO blood group and clinicopathological variables was assessed by Chi-squared analysis. The ratio of male to female was 1: 1.12. The median age at diagnosis was 68.5 years. A total of 111 neoplasms located in the right ureter. A total of 218 patients had radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). Multifocality was observed in 32 patients. The pathology was as follow: Grade 1 (seven cases), Grade 2 (110 cases) and Grade 3 (122 cases); Ta and T1 (83 cases), T2-T4 (156 cases). The distribution of ABO blood types was A, B, O and AB in 70 (29.3%), 76 (31.8%), 66 (27.6%) and 27 (11.3%), respectively. There were no significant differences in the clinicopathological variables among individuals with different ABO blood types. In a subgroup analysis, B and O group showed a worse tumor stage compared with A and AB groups (P = 0.01). B and O blood types are at higher risk of muscle invasive ureteral TCC as compared with A and AB blood types. We suggest ABO blood types to be taken into consideration when urologists select therapeutic schemes for individuals with ureteral TCC.

Association of ABO blood group with incidence and outcome of acute pulmonary embolism.

Association of ABO blood type with occurrence of pulmonary embolism (PE) has been demonstrated, and association of blood type with disease mortality and morbidity has recently been reported. Presently described was a retrospective study of mortality and morbidity according to blood group. Blood type and medical data of 230 patients with confirmed PE was abstracted from medical records. Two control groups were used for data analysis; the 1st included blood donors (Control 1), the 2nd included hospital staff born in the same region (Control 2). In PE patients, blood group A was the most common phenotype (46.1%), followed by blood groups O (25.2%), B (20.4%), and AB (8.2%). Among the control groups, no significant difference was found in distribution of A vs non-A (36.4% vs 36.6%, respectively) or O vs non-O (66.6% vs 66.4%, respectively) blood groups. Blood group A was significantly more prevalent than non-A in patients with PE, compared to both control groups (p=0.002 and 0.03, respectively), and blood group O was significantly less prevalent than non-O in patients with PE, compared with both control groups (p=0.009 and 0.04, respectively). No significant difference was found in PE patients regarding in-hospital and midterm (6-36 months follow-up) mortality (p=0.36 and 0.15, respectively) based on blood groups. Blood group A was significantly more common, and blood group 0 significantly less common, in patients with PE. No association was found regarding blood type and in-hospital outcome or midterm mortality.

The ABO Histo-Blood Group and AKI in Critically Ill Patients with Trauma or Sepsis.

ABO blood types are determined by antigen modifications on glycoproteins and glycolipids and associated with altered plasma levels of inflammatory and endothelial injury markers implicated in AKI pathogenesis. We sought to determine the association of ABO blood types with AKI risk in critically ill patients with trauma or sepsis. We conducted two prospective cohort studies at an urban, academic, level I trauma center and tertiary referral center; 497 patients with trauma admitted to the surgical intensive care unit between 2005 and 2010 with an injury severity score >15 and 759 patients with severe sepsis admitted to the medical intensive care unit between 2008 and 2013 were followed for 6 days for the development of incident AKI. AKI was defined by Acute Kidney Injury Network creatinine and dialysis criteria. Of 497 patients with trauma, 134 developed AKI (27%). In multivariable analysis, blood type A was associated with higher AKI risk relative to type O among patients of European descent (n=229; adjusted risk, 0.28 versus 0.14; risk difference, 0.14; 95% confidence interval, 0.03 to 0.24; P=0.02). Of 759 patients with sepsis, AKI developed in 326 (43%). Blood type A again conferred higher AKI risk relative to type O among patients of European descent (n=437; adjusted risk, 0.53 versus 0.40; risk difference, 0.14; 95% confidence interval, 0.04 to 0.23; P=0.01). Findings were similar when analysis was restricted to those patients who did not develop acute respiratory distress syndrome or were not transfused. We did not detect a significant association between blood type and AKI risk among individuals of African descent in either cohort. Blood type A is independently associated with AKI risk in critically ill patients with trauma or severe sepsis of European descent, suggesting a role for ABO glycans in AKI susceptibility.

The association of ABO blood type with disease recurrence and mortality among patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder undergoing radical cystectomy

ObjectivesTo evaluate the association of ABO blood type with clinicopathologic outcomes and mortality among patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder treated with radical cystectomy (RC). Patients and methodsWe identified 2,086 consecutive patients who underwent RC between 1980 and 2008. Postoperative recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were estimated using the Kaplan Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate the association of ABO blood type with outcomes. ResultsA total of 913 (44%), 881 (42%), 216 (10%), and 76 (4%) patients had blood type O, A, B, and AB, respectively. Median postoperative follow-up among survivors was 11.0 years (interquartile range: 7.7–15.9y). Overall, 1,561 patients died, with 770 deaths attributable to bladder cancer. Non-O blood type was associated with significantly worse 5-year RFS (65% vs. 69%; P = 0.04) and/or CSS (64% vs. 70%; P = 0.02). In particular, among patients with≤pT2N0 disease, the 5-year RFS for those with non-O vs. O blood type was 75% vs. 82%, respectively (P = 0.002), whereas the 5-year CSS was 77% vs. 85%, respectively (P = 0.001). Moreover, on multivariable analysis, blood type A remained independently associated with an increased risk of cancer-specific mortality (hazard ratio = 1.22; P = 0.01). ConclusionsNon-O blood type, particularly blood type A, is associated with a significantly increased risk of death from bladder cancer among patients undergoing RC. If validated, the utility of a multimodal therapy approach, including perioperative chemotherapy, or more frequent postoperative surveillance in this cohort warrants further study.

I read with great interest the article by Reilly et al1 in a recent issue of CHEST (April 2014). In this article, the authors prospectively studied the association of ABO blood types with ARDS risk in patients with major trauma and severe sepsis. The results were very interesting; however, a few pertinent points should be analyzed before these results are accepted into clinical practice.

ABO Blood Type A Is Associated With Increased Risk of ARDS in Whites Following Both Major Trauma and Severe Sepsis

ABO glycosyltransferases catalyze antigen modifications on various glycans and glycoproteins and determine the ABO blood types. Blood type A has been associated with increased risk of vascular diseases and differential circulating levels of proteins related to inflammation and endothelial function. The objective of this study was to determine the association of ABO blood types with ARDS risk in patients with major trauma and severe sepsis. We conducted prospective cohort studies in two populations at an urban tertiary referral, level I trauma center. Critically ill patients (n 5 732) presenting after major trauma were followed for 5 days for ARDS development. Additionally, 976 medical patients with severe sepsis were followed for 5 days for ARDS. Multivariable logistic regression was used to adjust for confounders. ARDS developed in 197 of the 732 trauma patients (27%). Blood type A was associated with increased ARDS risk among whites (37% vs 24%; adjusted OR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.14-3.12; P 5 .014), but not blacks (adjusted OR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.33-1.13; P=.114). ARDS developed in 222 of the 976 patients with severe sepsis (23%). Blood type A was also associated with an increased ARDS risk among whites (31% vs 21%; adjusted OR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.08-2.59; P=.021) but, again, not among blacks (adjusted OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.59-2.33; P=.652). Blood type A is associated with an increased risk of ARDS in white patients with major trauma and severe sepsis. These results suggest a role for ABO glycans and glycosyltransferases in ARDS susceptibility.

Effect of ABO blood type on mortality in patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder treated with radical cystectomy

ObjectiveABO blood type is an inherited characteristic that has been associated with the prognosis of several malignancies, but there is little evidence in urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ABO blood type on mortality in patients with UCB treated with radical cystectomy (RC). MethodsMulti-institutional data from 7,906 patients with UCB treated with RC between 1979 and 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. The effect of ABO blood type on UCB-related mortality was evaluated with univariable and multivariable competing-risks regression models. ResultsABO blood type was O in 3,728 (47%), A in 2,748 (35%), B in 888 (11%), and AB in 532 (7%) patients. Blood type B was associated with a greater likelihood of lymphovascular invasion (P = 0.010) and positive soft tissue margins (P = 0.008). The median follow-up was 41 months. The 5-year cumulative UCB-related mortality rates for blood type O, A, B, and AB were 29.5%, 30.5%, 33.2%, and 25.8%, respectively. In univariable competing-risks regression, patients with blood type B had worse UCB-related mortality than those with blood type O (P = 0.026) and AB (P = 0.020). In multivariable analysis, however, blood type lost its statistical significance. ConclusionsAmong patients treated with RC, ABO blood type is associated with a statistically significant but clinically insignificant difference in UCB-related mortality. This association was not present in multivariable analysis. Our data therefore suggest no relevant association of ABO blood type with UCB-related prognosis.

Association of Type-O Blood with Neuroendocrine Tumors in Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1

The ABO blood type system describes the expression of human blood group antigens found on both erythrocytes and normal tissue throughout the body. We recently reported an association between O blood type and the manifestation of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors in a cohort of patients with Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is an association of ABO blood type with the development of neuroendocrine tumors in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 1 (MEN-1). A retrospective analysis of 105 patients with MEN-1 was performed. Demographic, clinical, and biochemical data were analyzed by ABO blood type. Fisher's exact test was used to determine association between ABO blood type and manifestation of neuroendocrine tumor. Demographic and clinical characteristics were similar amongst blood type cohorts. We found an association between O blood type and the manifestation of a primary neuroendocrine tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, pancreas, and thymus in patients with MEN-1 (P = 0.01). Sixteen of 17 (94%) metastatic tumors had type-O blood, compared to 32 of 43 (74%) with a benign tumor who had non-O blood type. Our findings suggest an association between O blood type and the manifestation of a primary neuroendocrine tumor in patients with MEN-1. Prospective clinical studies are warranted to see whether patient blood type status may be a useful addition to current screening and surveillance practices.

Association of Type O Blood with Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors in Von Hippel–Lindau Syndrome

ABO blood type antigens are expressed not only on human red blood cells, but also throughout the gastrointestinal tract and in normal pancreatic tissue. Previous studies have identified an association between ABO blood type and various malignancies. We analyzed the association of ABO blood type with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) in a high-risk cohort of patients with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome. A retrospective review was performed of 798 patients with VHL syndrome. Blood type was confirmed for 181 patients. Fisher's exact test and Mehta's modification to Fisher's exact test were used to test for an association between ABO blood type and manifestations of VHL syndrome. We found a strong trend for association between O blood type and pancreatic disease manifestation in patients with VHL syndrome (P = 0.047). More importantly, there was a significant association of O blood type with solid pancreatic lesions consistent with PNETs (P = 0.0084). Patients with solid pancreatic lesions who met criteria for surgical resection at the National Institutes of Health also had a higher rate of O blood type than those who did not require surgery (P = 0.051). Our findings suggest an association between O blood type and pancreatic manifestation of disease in patients with VHL syndrome, especially for PNETs. Screening and surveillance approaches for pancreatic lesions in patients with VHL syndrome should also consider patient blood type. The possibility of A, B, H misexpression in PNETs should also be explored to determine whether the serologic association with disease translates into a relationship with tissue pathology.
