Exposure and health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds among drivers and passengers in long-distance buses

Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and formaldehyde from long-distance buses has been reported to adversely affect human health. This study investigates the concentrations of these five VOCs and evaluates their health risks to drivers and passengers on board. Ten trips from Taipei to Taichung were performed during the warm and cold seasons of 2021–2022. Two locations inside the bus were established to collect air samples by a 6-liter canister for drivers and passengers. Exposure concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were analyzed via gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector and the formaldehyde concentration was monitored using a formaldehyde meter. Subsequently, a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to evaluate the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the five VOCs. Formaldehyde emerged as the highest detected compound (9.06 ± 3.77 μg/m3), followed by toluene (median: 6.11 μg/m3; range: 3.86–14.69 μg/m3). In particular, formaldehyde was identified to have the significantly higher concentration during non-rush hours (10.67 ± 3.21 μg/m3) than that during rush hours (7.45 ± 3.41 μg/m3) and during the warm season (10.71 ± 2.97 μg/m3) compared with that during the cold season (7.41 ± 4.26 μg/m3). Regarding non-carcinogenic risks to drivers and passengers, the chronic hazard indices for these five VOCs were under 1 to indicate an acceptable risk. In terms of carcinogenic risk, the median risks of benzene and formaldehyde for drivers were 2.88 × 10−6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.11 × 10−6 – 5.13 × 10−6) and 1.91 × 10−6 (95% CI: 4.54 × 10−7 – 3.44 × 10−6), respectively. In contrast, the median carcinogenic risks of benzene and formaldehyde for passengers were less than 1 × 10−6 to present an acceptable risk. This study suggests that benzene and formaldehyde may present carcinogenic risks for drivers. Moreover, the non-carcinogenic risk for drivers and passengers is deemed acceptable. We recommended that the ventilation frequency be increased to mitigate exposure to VOCs in long-distance buses.

Effect of air sterilizers in an outpatient clinic at a tertiary university hospital.

After the COVID-19 outbreak, interest in airborne virus infections has increased. We considered ways to reduce the risk of infection to other people by inactivating the virus before it is inhaled into the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. We installed a recently developed air sterilizer in the newly remodeled outpatient clinic of a tertiary university hospital and confirmed its effectiveness. After remodeling the ENT outpatient clinic at Chonnam National University Hospital, 15 KOKKOS air sterilizers (Bentech Frontier Co., Ltd., Gwangju, Korea) were installed. Total culturable microorganisms (TCMs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in five separate inspection areas three days before installation, 2 weeks after installation, and 4 weeks after installation. After measurement of TCMs, improvement in air quality occurred 2 weeks after air sterilizer instatement at all timepoints except inspection area 5, and further improvement was achieved after 4 weeks (p < 0.05). After assessment of VOCs, improvement occurred 4 weeks after air sterilizer connection at all points (p < 0.05). KOKKOS air sterilizers are effective in improving air quality in an outpatient clinic at a tertiary university hospital.

Ambient volatile organic compounds in the Seoul metropolitan area of South Korea: Chemical reactivity, risks and source apportionment

The chemical reactivity, contribution of emission sources, and risk assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere of the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) were analyzed. Datasets collected from 6 photochemical assessment monitoring stations (PAMS) of SMA from 2018 to 2021 were used. Alkenes and aromatics contributed significantly to ozone formation relative to the emission concentrations, and aromatics accounted for most of the secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation in the SMA. The contributions of ozone and SOA formation were found to be notably higher at measurement stations in residential areas such as Guwol (GW) and Sosabon (SS) compared to other measurement stations. From the results of an emission source analysis, it was confirmed that anthropogenic sources such as combustion sources, vehicle exhaust, fuel evaporation, and solvent use had a significant effect at all measurement stations. Assessing the health risk, non-carcinogenic compounds were at acceptable level at all measurement stations. On the other hand, carcinogenic compounds were approaching risk level (10−4), thereby demanding immediate attention. The level of exposure to carcinogenic compounds increased by age group, and male was more vulnerable than female. It was found that SS had the highest level of exposure to carcinogens in the atmosphere of the population ages 60 or older. The health threat of the SMA population is expected due to direct exposure from inhalation of ambient toxic compounds and indirect exposure from ozone and PM2.5 formations through oxidation of VOCs. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing specific emission sources within the metropolitan area and developing comprehensive regional strategies to mitigate VOCs.

Preliminary assessment of volatile organic compounds and hazardous gases dispersion at low winds: case study of Mellitah Gas Complex, Libya

Air pollution from industrial areas has become really worrying especially for city dwellers. The plume dispersion emitted from industrial sources is subject to several factors: temperature and emission rate velocity, wind speed and direction, source height, and atmospheric stability. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the dispersion coefficients correlated within a Gaussian plume approach to an industrial source in Libya (Mellitah Gas Complex) under low and moderate wind speeds. To this end, we have developed a specific code based on the Gaussian method to study the dispersion of (1) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from oil storage tanks and condensate storage tanks, and (2) sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by the flaring process through three stacks of 80 m height. The emissions from multisource points and their dispersion have been predicted at calm wind conditions and the flammability and danger-prone toxic zones have been delimited around the studied site. The obtained results reveal that the emissions, particularly generated at low and moderate wind speeds, induce a dispersion with high concentration levels in the area surrounding the industrial site. The VOCs critical concentration region indicates a real risk of flammability at low-speed wind and stable atmospheric condition, from a height of 5 m above the ground. In fact, the VOCs concentration reach the Flammability Inferior Limit value of 0.018 m3 VOCs/m3 and these concentrations, appearing in the form of a plume, extend downstream to approximately 1000 m. The dispersion of NOx and SOx emissions downwind from the stacks are enhanced by wind speed; nevertheless, at 2 m height from the ground, the levels could exceed the limit value of 0.125 mg/m3, especially under the condition of unstable and very unstable atmospheric classes. From our findings, we recommend continuous monitoring campaigns inside and around the complex of Mellitah to ensure an environmentally secure zone that respects safety and health guidelines. Furthermore, enhanced simulations based on hourly weather conditions for extended area would be of great interest to accurately assess the air quality index in the region.

Human health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds in oil-based drill cuttings of shale gas.

Waste oil-based drill cuttings contain dioxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have the potential to cause serious health effects in humans. Therefore, this paper took oil-based drill cuttings (OBDCs) as the research object and carried out the testing of VOCs and dioxins content by using GC-MS and HRGCS-HRMS and comprehensively evaluated the content, composition and distribution pattern of VOCs and dioxins and the risk to human health posed by the two pollutants in OBDCs. The results showed that the VOCs did not exceed the emission limits in ESPPI (GB 31571-2015), but it is vital to recognise that 1,2-dichloropropane has the potential to cause cancer risk, with soil and groundwater risk control values of 662.95mg·kg-1 and 0.066mg·kg-1, respectively. Benzene, 1,2-dichloropropane and 8 other VOCs pose a non-carcinogenic risk to humans. The levels of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) exceeded those of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), which accounted for 95.76 percent of the total PCDD/Fs, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF (56.00%), 2,3,7,8-T4CDF (9.20%), 1,2,3,6,7,8-H6CDF (8.80%) and 1,2,3,7,8-P5CDF (8.00%) were the main contributing monomers. The findings of the assessment on exposure risk indicate that there is a respiratory risk to oil-based drill cuttings dioxins for adults and children exceeded the World Health Organisation (WHO) acceptable daily intake (ADI) (1-4 pgTEQ/kg/d). Finally, three aspects of solid waste pre-treatment prior to incineration, the incineration process and post incineration were used to reduce the environmental and human health risks from dioxins.

Risk assessment of volatile organic compounds from aged asphalt: Implications for environment and human health

The recycling of aged asphalt offers significant economic benefits. However, its utilization may pose environmental and health risks. Limited research has been conducted to assess the health and environmental risks associated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from aged asphalt. To investigate the environmental affects and health risks of VOCs from aged asphalt, this study conducted quantitative research through indoor simulation experiments, where different types of aged asphalt were prepared and analyzed for their VOCs release characteristics and associated risks. The findings of the study indicate noticeable differences in the VOCs release characteristics, environmental impacts, and health risks of aged asphalt, influenced by the asphalt type and aging method. Compared to the virgin asphalt, the concentration of VOCs in aged asphalt can be reduced by up to 88.38 %, resulting in a decreased impact on the environment and health. The content of alkanes, alkenes & alkynes, aromatics, and halogenated hydrocarbons in asphalt decreases, and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) became the primary components. In 70# and 90# virgin asphalt, alkanes, alkenes, and aromatics contribute 82.9 % and 87.3 %, respectively, to ozone generation, while in aged bitumen (except UV90#), OVOCs contribute more than 90 %. Alkanes and aromatics in the VOCs of the original asphalt contribute more than 90 % to the formation of secondary organic aerosols, while alkanes and OVOCs play this role in the aged asphalt. Although the release concentration of VOCs and the associated environmental and health risks are reduced after asphalt aging, they should not be disregarded. This study will contribute to accelerating the prevention and control of traffic pollution promoting green and sustainable development in transportation.

Assessment of volatile organic compounds in indoor and outdoor environment – A study on air quality impact assessment

Objectives: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a type of pollutant that causes health risks and can be present in both indoor and outdoor environments. VOCs originate mainly from solvents and chemicals used at home or in offices and also from vehicle emissions. The current research work was aimed at the detection and quantification of VOCs indoor and outdoor at Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Pharmacy, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (DU), Porur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Material and Methods: Air was drawn through an adsorbent tube with a pump at a steady flow rate (100 mL min-1) for an hour to gather samples using the active sampling approach. Thermal desorption in combination with a gas chromatography (GC) analyzer was used to estimate the levels of hazardous VOCs, namely benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and o-xylene (BTEX) compounds. Results: VOCs were analyzed using the GC-mass spectroscopy technique. The finding shows the levels of BTEX as benzene (0.05–0.11 μg/m3), toluene (0.44–1.27 μg/m3), ethylbenzene (0.012–0.03 μg/m3), m-xylene (0.009–0.027 μg/m3), p-xylene (0.007–0.025 μg/m3), and o-xylene (0.003–0.019 μg/m3) compounds. Conclusion: The BTEX levels were observed to be well below the maximum acceptable limit. VOC emissions can be reduced by making process changes or by installing air pollution control equipment.

Concentration and health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds from a closed solid waste landfill site: The role of flaring system

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from landfills, posing health risks to landfill workers as well as nearby residents. This study aimed to assess the health risks associated with the Kuchino landfill near Moscow. The site was closed in 2017, and currently, reclamation and rehabilitation activities are underway by extracting the landfill gases and flaring them.The concentrations of VOCs were measured at the landfill site before flaring and at the edge of the nearby residential area after flaring. The measurements were performed by an accredited laboratory on a quarterly basis during 2020, adhering to relevant Russian and international standards. Measurements were conducted once each during the four seasons. Thirty VOCs were identified at the site and 20 at the nearby residential area. Risk calculations revealed that the workers at the landfill site were exposed to high carcinogenic (1.7 × 10−1) and non-carcinogenic risks (1.1 × 103). Carbon tetrachloride was the main contributor to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, with 73.5% and 61% contributions, respectively. Regarding the health risks posed to the residents after flaring, the VOCs were found to exceed the acceptable limit for carcinogens (1.13 × 10−4) and remain within acceptable limits for non-carcinogens (9.23 × 10−1). Chloroform contributed 80% to potential carcinogenic risks and xylene contributed 57% to non-carcinogenic risks—both were principal contributors in their respective categories. The findings suggest the need for urgent mitigation actions to protect the health of workers and residents. Flaring is not a magical solution for VOCs emission; rather, flaring itself produces certain harmful VOCs.

Advancements in Improving Selectivity of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Gas Sensors Opening New Perspectives for Their Application in Food Industry

Volatile compounds not only contribute to the distinct flavors and aromas found in foods and beverages, but can also serve as indicators for spoilage, contamination, or the presence of potentially harmful substances. As the odor of food raw materials and products carries valuable information about their state, gas sensors play a pivotal role in ensuring food safety and quality at various stages of its production and distribution. Among gas detection devices that are widely used in the food industry, metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are of the greatest importance. Ongoing research and development efforts have led to significant improvements in their performance, rendering them immensely useful tools for monitoring and ensuring food product quality; however, aspects related to their limited selectivity still remain a challenge. This review explores various strategies and technologies that have been employed to enhance the selectivity of MOS gas sensors, encompassing the innovative sensor designs, integration of advanced materials, and improvement of measurement methodology and pattern recognize algorithms. The discussed advances in MOS gas sensors, such as reducing cross-sensitivity to interfering gases, improving detection limits, and providing more accurate assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could lead to further expansion of their applications in a variety of areas, including food processing and storage, ultimately benefiting both industry and consumers.

Emission characteristics, environmental impacts and health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds from the typical chemical industry in China

To study the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission characteristics of industrial enterprises in China, 6 typical chemical industries in Yuncheng City were selected as research objects, including the modern coal chemical industry (MCC), pharmaceutical industry (PM), pesticide industry (PE), coking industry (CO) and organic chemical industry (OC). The chemical composition of 91 VOCs was quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that the emission concentration of VOCs in the chemical industry ranged from 1.16 to 155.59 mg/m3. Alkanes were the main emission components of MCC (62.0%), PE (55.1%), and OC (58.5%). Alkenes (46.5%) were important components of PM, followed by alkanes (23.8%) and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) (21.2%). Halocarbons (8.6%-71.1%), OVOCs (9.7%-37.6%) and alkanes (11.2%-27.0%) were characteristic components of CO. The largest contributor to OFP was alkenes (0.6%-81.7%), followed by alkanes (9.3%-45.9%), and the lowest one was alkyne (0%-0.5%). Aromatics (66.9%-85.4%) were the largest contributing components to SOA generation, followed by alkanes (2.6%-28.5%), and the lowest one was alkenes (0%-4.1%). Ethylene and BTEX were the key active species in various chemical industries. The human health risk assessment showed workers long-term exposed to the air in the chemical industrial zone had a high cancer and non-cancer risk during work, and BTEX and dichloromethane were the largest contributors.

Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Different Functional Zones in Baoji in Summer

The situation of air pollution in Guanzhong Plain has been increasing in recent years; hence, it is very important to study the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their health risks in urban functional zones. We analyzed 115 VOCs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/hydrogen ion flame detector (GC-MS/FID) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) at four sampling sites in the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones of Baoji. We analyzed the main components and key species in the different functional zones. Ozone formation potential (OFP),·OH consumption rate (L·OH), and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) were used to evaluate the environmental impact, and the hazard index (HI) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR) methods were employed. The results revealed that the mean values of φ(TVOCs) in the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were (59.63±23.85)×10-9, (42.92±11.88)×10-9, (60.27±24.09)×10-9, and (55.54±7.44)×10-9, respectively. The dominant contributors at the traffic zone were alkanes, and those at the other functional zones were OVOCs. Acetaldehyde, acetone, n-butane, and isopentane were abundant at different functional zones. According to the characteristic ratios of VOCs, the average ratio of toluene to benzene (T/B) at the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were 1.84, 2.39, 1.28, and 1.64, respectively, and the ratio of iso-pentane to n-pentane (i/n) was mainly between 1 and 4. The results indicated that VOCs in Baoji were significantly affected by vehicle emissions and gasoline evaporation, biomass and coal combustion, and industrial coatings and foundry. The ratio of m/p-xylene to ethylbenzene (X/E) was lower than 2 at the four functional zones, and the minimum was 1.79 at the scenic zones; the results revealed that X/E was small, and the aging degree of air masses was high, indicating the influence of regional transport. According to the ratio of formaldehyde to acetaldehyde (C1/C2) and the ratio of acetaldehyde to propanal (C2/C3), it was suggested that there may have been evident anthropogenic emission sources, and the photochemical reaction had an important effect on aldehydes and ketones. Environmental impact assessment results revealed that OVOCs and alkenes contributed significantly to OFP and OFP from large to small was as follows:industrial zone>scenic zone>traffic zone>comprehensive zone. The range of L·OH in each functional zone was 8.77-15.82 s-1, with isoprene contributing the most in the industrial zone and acetaldehyde contributing the most at other functional zones. The SOAFP of each functional zone was as follows:scenic zone>comprehensive zone>traffic zone>industrial zone. Toluene, m/p-xylene, and isoprene were the notable species. According to the health risk assessment of EPA, the HI of toxic VOCs in all functional zones was lower than 1, which was at an acceptable level. However, the number of days with HI>1 in industrial zones accounted for 42.86% of the total sampling days, indicating a high risk. The lifetime carcinogenic risk (LCR) of the traffic, comprehensive, industrial, and scenic zones were 1.83×10-5, 1.21×10-5, 1.85×10-5, and 1.63×10-5, respectively, which were all in grade Ⅲ of the rating system, indicating a high probability of cancer risk. Species with LCR greater than 10-6 were formaldehyde; acetaldehyde; 1,2-dibromoethane; 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloropropane; and chloroform.

Emission characteristics, environmental impact, and health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during manicure processes

In recent years, the nail industry has been widely popular in China, and the use of nail care products has also significantly increased. Due to its high content of volatile solvents, the released VOCs not only have a negative impact on indoor air quality but also pose a health threat to nail salon workers who are highly exposed to such environments. The objectives of this research were to characterize VOCs emissions from detailed manicure processes and to evaluate the impact on the environment and health risks. Results showed that the VOCs concentration in the anti-warping treatment process was much higher than that in other manicure steps, at 360.69 mg/m3, making its contributions of OFP and SOA equally prominent. The trend of concentration contribution was similar to that of OFP, and OVOCs were the most significant contributor to the VOCs components in the whole manicure process. Since organic solvent nail gels were also frequently used in most steps, the main VOCs were methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate. Aromatics were the component that contributed the most to SOA, and its contributions in all processes were >85 %. Health risk assessments performed in our study indicated that acrolein was the main non-carcinogen, and the carcinogenic risk of this study could be ignored. The results of this study can be used as a basis for controlling VOCs emission and reducing exposure to VOCs in nail salons.

Pollution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Songhua Lake, China

In order to assess the dangers to human health and the environment from Songhua Lake's volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution. A total of 18 VOCs were found in the water samples that were collected at 26 sampling locations in Songhua Lake utilizing the purge and trap technique and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Toluene and naphthalene had the highest detection rates among them, reaching 96.15%; trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and isopropyl benzene had the lowest rates, only 3.85%. The maximum and average concentrations of 1,1-dichloroethane were 20.93 μg/L and 4.16 μg/L, respectively, the maximum concentration of isopropyl benzene was only 0.02 μg/L, and the average concentration was also the lowest. The spatial distribution of VOCs in Song Hua Lake was typically described as "high in the northwest and low in the southeast," with a concentration range of 0.00 to 23.21 μg/L. An examination of the current situation reveals that human activity-related ecological deterioration is the primary cause of the VOCs contamination in Songhua Lake. The results of the risk assessment revealed that there were only moderate ecological risks to aquatic organisms and that the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices of Songhua Lake were within the safe range. Additionally, there were no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic threats to the health of people as a whole.

Emissions and Control Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds from a Typical Chemical Enterprise

Emissions from the chemical industry are among the important sources of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which face control challenges such as multiple emission sources, high emission intensity and complex pollutant types. In this study, a typical chemical enterprise is selected as the research object, and VOCs characteristics such as emission amount, concentration and composition are analyzed; end-pipe treatment of VOCs is evaluated and control suggestions are proposed. Results show that the annual emission amount of VOCs from organized stacks was 64.08 tons, accounting for 72% of total emissions. Cyclohexane and xylene were the major components during the emission. The filling process was the largest contributor in the case of unorganized emission. As far as end-pipe treatment was concerned, ultraviolet (UV) photolysis varied greatly between 12–80%, indicating unstable removal efficiency. Finally, several measures concerning whole-process control were suggested.

Health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from landfill working surface via dispersion simulation enhanced by probability analysis

The assessment of the health risks of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from landfills via dispersion model is crucial but also challenging because of remarkable variations in their emissions and meteorological conditions. This study used a probabilistic approach for the assessment of the health risks of typical VOCs by combining artificial neural network models for emission rates and a numerical dispersion model enhanced by probability analysis. A total of 8753 rounds of simulation were performed with distributions of waste compositions and the valid hourly meteorological conditions for 1 year. The concentration distributions and ranges of the typical health-risky VOCs after dispersion were analyzed with 95% probability. The individual and cumulative non-carcinogenic risks of the typical VOCs were acceptable with all values less than 1 in the whole study domain. For individual carcinogenic risks, only ethylbenzene, benzene, chloroform, and 1, 2-dichloroethane at extreme concentrations showed minor or moderate risks with a probability of 0.1%–1% and an impact distance of 650–3000 m at specific directions. The cumulative carcinogenic risks were also acceptable at 95% probability in the whole study domain, but exceeded 1 × 10−6 or even 1 × 10−4 at some extreme conditions, especially within the landfill area. The vertical patterns of the health risks with height initially increased, and then decreased rapidly, and the peak values were observed around the height of the emission source. The dispersion simulation and health risk assessment of the typical health-risky VOCs enhanced by Monte Carlo can accurately reflect their probabilistic dispersion patterns and health risks to surrounding residents from both spatial and temporal dimensions. With this approach, this study can provide important scientific basis and technical support for the health risk assessment and management of landfills.
