The volume of exocrine secretion of the exocrine pancreatic gland and the quantities of bicarbonate and numerous enzymes in this secretion were measured in normal children, in children with cystic fibrosis, and in children with other exocrine pancreatic disorders. This was done after stimulation of secretion with pancreozymin and secretin. The output of pancreatic amylase increases with age, while the other parameters of exocrine pancreatic function appear to be independent of age. In cystic fibrosis, secretion of water and bicarbonate is more regularly affected than is the secretion of enzymes. In children with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency not due to cystic fibrosis, secretion of enzymes is more affected than that of water and bicarbonate. These tests provide a discriminating analysis of exocrine pancreatic secretion in childhood.
