New Digital Order and its Implications on Indian Family Relationships

The extensive adoption of mobile devices in India has revolutionized family communication patterns, presenting new dynamics and challenges. This study investigates the role of mobile communication in various aspects of family relationships, including parent-child interactions, marital relationships, and intergenerational dynamics. The aim is to see the evolving landscape of family relations in the digital era on family communication patterns, psychological well-being, and social connectedness. Mobile devices facilitate frequent and convenient communication, allowing family members to stay connected despite physical distances. It has also been observed to increase monitoring and supervision by parents, which may positively influence parent-child relationships. However, excessive mobile usage and dependency may lead to neglect of face-to-face interactions, resulting in reduced family interactions and communication. It is essential to explore the potential consequences of excessive mobile usage and identify strategies to promote healthy mobile communication practices within Indian families. The researcher conducted ten semi-structured interviews in a suburban housing society in Mumbai suburbs with similar socioeconomic strata. The aim was to know more about how mobile phones affect family communications. Qualitative grounded theory analysis was used to find themes and interpret results. (Creswell, 2013) The study explores the role of mobile communication in family relationships, emphasizing the need for effective management of mobile device usage within households. Setting time limits, boosting digital literacy, and encouraging family activities offline are among tactics that could help lessen the detrimental effects of mobile communication on family dynamics. Furthermore, understanding the cultural context of Indian families is crucial, as it can influence the adoption and interpretation of mobile technology within familial relationships. The research concludes that the role of mobile communication and usage in Indian family relations is a complex and multifaceted process. While mobile devices offer convenience and connectivity, their impact on family dynamics must be considered. This research abstract highlights the need for further investigation into the effects of mobile communication on different aspects of family relationships in the Indian context.

In Russia, the 2014 enactment of a concept of a State family policy for the period until 2025 has been accompanied by a process of enshrining traditional values as a foundation for family policy. Recent reforms have recognised at constitutional level the supremacy of traditional values in Russian family policy, resulting in amendments to the Russian Family Code, with further changes in the pipeline. However, even prior to these reforms, administrative and judicial practice have applied the law through the prism of traditional values covering different aspects of family relationships, including the consideration of the best interests of the child, the determination of the child’s place of residence, the limitation and revocation of parental rights, and the recognition of same-sex unions. The contribution analyses where these tendencies may cause frictions with international standards in the field of human rights and, in particular, rights of the child.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FAMILY TYPOLOGY AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN THE US? FINDINGS FROM THE PINE STUDY

A broad literature has explored racial and ethnic disadvantages in cognitive aging. Migration and acculturation created additional challenges on cognitive aging of minority older immigrants. Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the United States. Chinese Americans constitute the largest segment of Asian Americans. Family is a core social value in Chinese culture. Less is known regarding the impact of family relationship on cognitive function for US Chinese older immigrants. Data were derived from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly (PINE), a community-engaged, population-based epidemiological study of 3,157 US Chinese older adults aged 60 and above in the greater Chicago area from 2011-2013. A typology approach is a useful tool to operationalize multifaceted family relationships. Our prior study used Latent Class Analysis to cluster family typologies, evaluating structural, associational, affectual, functional and normative aspects of family relationship. Cognitive function was evaluated by global cognition, episodic memory, executive function, working memory, and Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination (C-MMSE). Linear regression and quantile regression were used. The findings showed detached and commanding conflicted typologies were associated with lower global cognitive function compared with unobligated ambivalent typology. Wish respect to cognitive domains, detached, commanding conflicted, and tight-knit typologies were associated with lower episodic memory, working memory, and C-MMSE than unobligated ambivalent typology, respectively. Commanding conflicted typology, featured by high intergenerational conflicts, was associated with lowest cognitive function among all typologies. Health care professionals and social service providers should focus on older adults with commanding conflicted typology and prevent them from cognitive impairment.

TYPOLOGY OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIP AND ELDER MISTREATMENT IN A U.S. CHINESE POPULATION

Early research on family relationship and Elder Mistreatment (EM) often focused on one or two indicators of relations. A typology approach that capture the complexity and variation of relations is a useful tool to understand the association between multifaceted family relationship and EM. EM was measured by a modified Vulnerability to Abuse Screening Scale. Latent Class Analysis was used to construct family typologies, evaluating structural, associational, functional, affectual, and normative aspects of family relationship. Logistic regression was used. Unobligated ambivalent (OR, 1.90; 95%CI, 1.54-2.34) and detached (OR, 1.78; 95%CI, 1.32-2.42) typologies were associated with greater risk of EM, while tight-knit (OR, 0.34; 95%CI, 0.27-0.44) typology was associated with lower risk of EM. Unobligated ambivalent typology, featured by high intergenerational closeness and conflict, was prevalent among US Chinese immigrants, and associated with greater likelihood of EM. Culturally customized social services were suggested to reduce intergenerational ambivalence and prevent EM for immigrants.

Early menarche and its relationship to paternal migrant work among middle-school-aged students in China.

Associations have been shown between father's absence and menarcheal age, but most studies have focused on absence resulting from divorce, abandonment or death. Little research has been conducted to evaluate the effect on menarcheal age of paternal absence through migrant work. In a sample of 400 middle school students, this study examined the association between paternal migrant work and menarcheal age against a backdrop of extensive rural-to-urban migration in China. Data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire, including social-demographic characteristics, aspects of family relationships, information about father's migrant work and age at menarche. After adjusting for BMI, parent marital status and perceived relationship with mother, lower self-perceived quality of father-daughter relationship (both 'father present, relationship poor' and 'father absent, relationship poor') and lower frequency of contact with the father were associated with higher odds for early menarche. These findings suggest that the assumption that father's absence for work influences the timing of menarche needs to be examined in the context of the quality of the father-daughter relationship and paternal care, which appear to play a critical role in the timing of menarche. These findings also emphasize the importance of enhancing paternal involvement and improving father-daughter relationships in the development of appropriate reproductive strategy in daughters.

Content validity of the PROMIS\xae pediatric family relationships measure for children with chronic illness

BackgroundFamilies play a critical role in supporting the health and well-being of children with chronic illnesses, who face a lifetime of responsibility for self-management of their condition. Our goal was to investigate whether the novel Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System® (PROMIS®) Pediatric Family Relationships measure, developed primarily within the general pediatric population, reflects the experiences of family relationships for chronically ill children and their parents.MethodsWe conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with children (aged 8–17) with common chronic conditions: asthma (n = 6), type 1 diabetes (n = 5), or sickle cell disease (n = 5), and separately with one of their parents (n = 16). Interviews were recorded, and two team members independently coded the written transcripts facilitated by Nvivo 10. The systematic content analysis used a combination of: 1) pre-specified themes corresponding to the six facets of the domain identified during measure development and reflected in the content of the items (i.e., Sense of Family; Love and Caring; Value and Acceptance; Trust, Dependability, and Support; Communication; Enjoyment), as well as 2) open-coding, allowing participants to define important concepts (i.e., disease impact).ResultsFamily relationships were conceptualized in a similar way to the general population, as evidenced by child and parent responses to open-ended questions about family relationships and to specific probes that corresponded with the item content in the Family Relationship 8-item short form. Children spontaneously discussed the impact of their disease on family relationships less often than parents did. Although participants described how living with a chronic illness positively and negatively impacted aspects of family relationships, nearly all participants believed their responses to the PROMIS® Family Relationships items would not change if they (or their child) did not have a chronic illness.ConclusionsAmong a sample of families of children with one of 3 chronic illnesses, participants described family relationships in a way that was consistent with the facets of the PROMIS® Family Relationship domain. This study adds to the content validity of the measure for children with chronic illness.

Objective: To describe the family relationships in the context of chemical addiction and identify them as risk or protective factors causing, or resulting from, drug abuse. Material and Methods: This was a literature review based on searches carried out in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) during the month of December 2015. The following descriptors and combinations were used: family relationships, and chemical addiction. Eight articles were selected to compose the sample, being three from Lilacs, three from BDENF, and two from Psychology Index. Results: Some aspects of family relationships were identified as determinants for initiation of drug use, such as distancing from parents, isolation, loneliness, and child/young abuse. The articles also showed drug addiction as a major factor for disruption of family relationships, generating various types of disorders and overwhelming the family. Conclusion: Family relationships can be both cause and consequence of chemical addiction. It is up to health professionals to look for measures to control this issue. DESCRIPTORS Family Relations. Bonding and Expressed Emotion: Two Interlinked Concepts?

Background: Bonding and expressed emotion (EE) are two concepts modeling family relationships. Two studies, with contradictory results, have explored whether these concepts and their corresponding instruments [the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) and the Camberwell Family Interview] do indeed measure the same aspects of family relationships. Our first objective was to compare the adolescents' perceptions of family relationships using the PBI, and the parental viewpoint using the Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS-EE). Secondly, we compared the PBI scores and EE levels of the parents. Sampling and Methods: Sixty adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa completed the PBI. The FMSS and a modified version of the PBI were administered to parents separately. Results: No significant link was identified between adolescent PBI scores and parental EE levels. However, a link between maternal ‘modified' PBI scores and maternal EE was observed: when mothers registered a high Final EE, they were more likely to deny their daughter's psychological autonomy compared to mothers with lower EE. Conclusions: Our empirical results do not support the hypothesis of an overlap between the two concepts. Indeed bonding and EE measure the same object, i.e. the quality of family relationships, but time scales differ and so do the perspectives (patient vs. parental viewpoint).

Adolescent Drug Abuse in Chinese Families: An Insider Perspective

Understanding of the role of the family in adolescent drug abuse and rehabilitation in Chinese contexts is scarce, particularly from an insider's perspective that elicits the voices of the participants. This study maps the salient aspects of family relationships in adolescent drug rehabilitation in Hong Kong. Thirty-four Chinese male adolescents, 32 mothers, and 25 fathers participated in pretreatment and posttreatment interviews using the family grid. From a content analysis of the constructs employed by the families, tenderness, forcefulness, social interaction, and emotional arousal were prevalent at both pretreatment and posttreatment. Surprise findings include the presence of tenderness at both pretreatment and posttreatment. The study concludes that there is a need to reconceptualize the idiosyncratic role of Chinese parents in adolescent drug rehabilitation.

Family Relationships and Adolescent Cigarette Smoking: Results from a National Longitudinal Survey

The current study used national survey data to identify which aspects of family relationships are predictive of experimental and daily cigarette smoking. A multi-wave longitudinal survey periodically assessed adolescents aged 11 to 17 (N = 1,725) over a seven year follow-up period. Parent interviewers were obtained at the initial screening. Nineteen indicators of family relationships were used based on parent and child interviews. Several indicators of smoking were used including first time cigarette smoking, a nine-point scale of intensity of experimentation with cigarettes, an indicator of daily smoking, and an indicator of smoking at least five or more cigarettes per day. Logistic and multiple regression analyses that controlled for ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status found that family relationships were only predictive for subjects under the age of 18. Significant predictors were (a) indices of parental attachment, (b) indices of time spent with one's family, (c) having older siblings who smoke, (d) family structure, (e) family stress, (g) parental negative labeling of the child, and (h) parental leniency towards delinquent acts. We conclude that several aspects of family relationships are important predictors of adolescent cigarette smoking and predict daily smoking more strongly than initial smoking.

Family relationships in survivors of childhood cancer: resource or restraint?

Family relationships may be an important mediator between childhood cancer and psychosocial adjustment in adult life. This paper focuses on the developmental task of the transition from adolescence to adulthood, with regard to the cancer survivor's family relationships. Theories, concepts and findings relevant to this specific focus are considered in relation to whether these relationships may prove a resource or a restraint in this process. Potential aspects of family relationships that may be of interest to research are discussed, and clinical implications drawn.

The book combines geographical with sociological perspectives and is divided into two parts. The first looks at the temporal and spatial trends in the distribution of domestic servants during the 1980s and at the determinants of 'demand' (why people want to employ them) and 'supply' (why people want these jobs). Demand is explored in two ways. First by analysing advertisements for domestic servants of various kinds in The Lady magazine, a national publication, and in local newspapers covering the two local labour markets studied: Newcastle and Reading, between July 1981 and June 1991. Those aspects of family relationships and interactions which influence whether couples will employ domestic servants are explored in interviews with 300 households in Reading and Newcastle with both partners in full-time professional or managerial employment. This reveals that couples who share domestic tasks fully are far less likely than those with a more traditional division of labour to employ servants (32% versus 85%).

Marital Relationships and Self-Esteem: How Jewish Families Are Different

The author investigates whether US Jewish families differ from other American families by valuing more the nurturant and supportive aspects of family relationships. On a normative level Judaism assigns a major role to the family especially its nurturance and stability; the issue becomes whether this is still true of the contemporary Jewish family. 1 way to examine the centrality of the family is to examine behavior: are Jewish marriages less likely to end in divorce? Another way is to look at the social-psychological dimensions of the family--to look not at levels of marital satisfaction per se but the social-psychological consequences of marital satisfaction. The author argues that family and family relations form an important part of Jewish self-esteem. Using a sample of 2300 individuals from Chicago collected by the National Institute of Mental Health to study the social origins of personal stress the study finds after controlling for education age and sex that the self-esteem of Jewish respondents was affected more than that of Protestants and Catholics by measures of marital support marital stress concern about the future of the marriage seeking professional help for marital problems being married and the duration of marriage. As expected levels of marital support and stress did not differ; the significant difference was the effect on self-esteem. What is especially interesting about this finding is that it is directly opposite to contemporary trends such as urbanization mobility education and female employment that tend to devalue the importance of the family. Persons who place a high value on family stabililty in their self-concept structure may be more likely to act in ways that maximize family viability; they may also be more tolerant of unsatisfying marriages. This broadened the scope of inquiry, and psychiatry was forced to venture beyond its own limits to seek contributions, interchanges, and points of contiguity with other sciences. Since 1956 many scholars have attempted to shed light on particular aspects of family relationships, defining the concepts that today constitute the basis of family therapy. The pathological interdependence in family relations of N. Ackerman, Wynne's pseudomutuality, Bateson's double bind, and Bowen's undifferentiated mass of the ego are the basic concepts developed by those pioneers. Next came study of the family, and doctors and epistemologists zealously accumulated a wealth of data to be used both as identity matrix and as therapeutic aid. Bowen's position is particularly interesting: his concept of id differentiation opened the way to the multigenerational view of the family that has now become the standard frame of reference in therapeutic work: the family as a trigenerational system. The inadequacy of already codified theories and techniques in the difficult treatment of psychoses was an effective incentive for shaping this multigenerational perspective into the conceptual tool we have today. These brief considerations help us to explain how viewing psychosis exclusively from the standpoint of individual pathology impeded our using the family as one of the resources to draw on in the treatment and cure of mental illness. Medical Encounters: The Experience of Illness and Treatment

<h3>Objectives</h3> Young people9s perspectives on the association between having a family member with a chronic health concern (FHC) and their own health are under-researched. This study used young people9s reports to assess the prevalence of FHCs and their association with negative health outcomes, with an aim of identifying potential inequalities between marginalised and non-marginalised young people. Family cohesion was examined as a moderating factor. <h3>Design</h3> Cross-sectional data from the Australian Child Wellbeing Project survey were used. Respondents were asked whether someone in their family experienced one or more FHCs (disability, mental illness or drug/alcohol addiction). In addition, their experience of different psychosomatic symptoms (headache, sleeplessness, irritability, etc), aspects of family relationships and social and economic characteristics (disability, materially disadvantaged and Indigenous) were documented. <h3>Setting</h3> Nationally representative Australian sample. <h3>Participants</h3> 1531 students in school years 4 and 6 and 3846 students in year 8. <h3>Results</h3> A quarter of students reported having an FHC (years 4 and 6: 23.96% (95% CI 19.30% to 28.62%); year 8: 25.35% (95% CI 22.77% to 27.94%)). Significantly, more students with FHCs than those without reported experiencing 2 or more negative health symptoms at least weekly (OR=1.78; 95% CI 1.19 to 2.65; p&lt;0.01). However, an independent relationship between FHCs and symptom load was only found in the case of FHC-drug/alcohol addiction. Marginalised students and students reporting low family cohesion had an increased prevalence of FHCs and notably higher symptom loads where FHCs were present. Level of family cohesion did not impact the relationship between FHCs and symptom load. <h3>Conclusions</h3> The burden of FHCs is inequitably distributed between marginalised and non-marginalised groups, and between young people experiencing different levels of family cohesion. More work is required regarding appropriate targets for community and family-level interventions to support young people in the context of FHCs.
