Education for a Sustainable Future: The Impact of Environmental Education on Shaping Sustainable Values and Attitudes among Students

In the face of pressing global challenges, the role of education in shaping sustainable values and attitudes among students has become an urgent priority. This study delves into the immediate impact of education and awareness on students’ knowledge, values, and attitudes toward a sustainable future, with a specific focus on environmental education (EE). It examines various aspects of EE, including curriculum development, teacher training, environmental initiatives within educational institutions, and students’ comprehension of environmental issues. To understand the role of education in fostering a sustainable future, a 2-point Likert scale questionnaire was distributed to a randomly selected sample of 87 high school teachers. The results, analysed through multiple regression analysis, the chi-square test, the t-test, and Cronbach’s alpha value tests, underscore the urgent and significant role of EE in preparing children for a secure future. The study further highlights the increasing urgency and importance of EE in the face of climate change, positioning it as a crucial element for early childhood educational policies.

The role of environmental education in formation of environmental literacy of society

The article explores the role of ecological education in the formation of ecological literacy of society at the current stage of development of pedagogical thought. The main approaches to studying various aspects of environmental education are discussed. An overview of the main directions in this scientific field is given and the peculiarities of their interpretation by researchers are analyzed. This research investigates the concepts and meanings associated with environmental education. The study finds that environmental education and learning are practical and interdisciplinary, seeking to facilitate harmonious interaction between humans and the natural world. The paper also emphasizes the significance of the mentioned above concepts within the national education system.

Current Situation and Development of Ideological and Political Education for Rural Youth under the Strategy of Rural Revitalization

Rural revitalization is an important issue of the times that closely follows the development of the times and affects the political, economic and cultural development of China. As an important participant of this issue of the times, rural youths shoulder the important mission of building rural culture and at the same time the important historical responsibility of building a beautiful countryside. The ideological and political education work of rural youth is an important part of realizing rural revitalization, and it is also an important ideological support and source of rural life production and development. For the ideological and political education of youth in rural areas, it is necessary to base on the strategy of rural revitalization and actively carry out the ideological and political education work of rural youth. This paper analyzes the role of youth ideological and political education in rural areas, discusses the problems of rural youth ideological and political education in rural revitalization, starts from the four aspects of education environment, education guidance, education carrier and education mechanism, and puts forward the optimization path of rural youth ideological and political education in the context of rural revitalization in the light of the current political and economic situation in rural areas, hoping that can provide help for the ideological and political education work in rural areas in China.

Educational environment and its relation to academic performance as perceived by medical students in University of Khartoum. A cross Sectional Study, Sudan, 2020.

Purpose: to assess students' perception of educational environment and to evaluate the difference in perception related to academic performance and demographic characteristics in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, 2020. Method: The authors performed an observational analytical cross-sectional study at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, using a validated structured closed-ended self -administered questionnaire; the Dundee Ready Educational environment measurement (DREEM). They included all students registered in the faculty for the academic year 2020-2021 except the first semester students. They used proportionate stratified sampling to divide students into strata and sub-strata based on batch number and sex, respectively. Then, they selected students proportionately from each substrata using simple random sampling. Results: out of 405 randomly selected students, 341 (84.2%) filled the questionnaire. The mean total DREEM score was (104.48/200), indicating a positive perception of the learning environment. This, with only student's perception of atmosphere subscale showing negative results. Test results showed a significant difference between different student's age groups, academic phases and batches in regards to their perception of atmosphere (p-value 0.023, 0.001, 0.013 respectively). Regarding residence, a significant difference was found in total DREEM scores, with students residing in university dormitories having a more positive perception. Test results showed no significant difference in student's perception of educational environment in all DREEM subscales between achievers and underachievers. Conclusion: although the overall perception of educational environment was more positive than negative, the study highlighted various areas needing special attention. Theauthors believe that both faculty administration and students must work together to deliver tangible improvement in all aspects of educational environment.

Educação Ambiental e sustentabilidade: estudo de caso na Escola Estadual do Campo Padre Antônio Vieira – Ensino Fundamental, Francisco Alves/PR

A escola do campo pode ser um dos principais espaços da transformação humana, quando se leva em consideração a historicidade e os conhecimentos locais. Para tanto, torna-se fundamental a existência de estrutura adequada e o reconhecimento de mecanismos de construção da identidade do sujeito do campo. Assim, propicia-se o desenvolvimento do sentido de pertencimento que pode transformar a localidade onde a escola está inserida. Nesse contexto, este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a Escola Estadual do Campo Padre Antônio Vieira – Ensino Fundamental, localizada no distrito de Rio Bonito, município de Francisco Alves, Paraná (PR), quanto aos aspectos da educação ambiental e sustentabilidade. Dessa forma, abordou-se principalmente os aspectos qualitativos, por meio das metodologias de pesquisa documental, percepção ambiental e análise de grupo focal. Os dados obtidos foram categorizados seguindo a metodologia da análise do conteúdo. A partir das informações obtidas, foram observados alguns pontos sensíveis ligados ao tripé da sustentabilidade, como: no aspecto ambiental verificou-se a carência de ações voltadas para educação ambiental e poucas práticas ambientais corretas; no aspecto social, a ausência do sentimento de pertencimento da comunidade escolar, a desvalorização do processo ensino aprendizagem e horta abandonada; no aspecto econômico observou-se a dificuldade financeira das famílias.

 Environmental Education and sustainability: case study at Campo Padre Antônio Vieira State School - Elementary School, Francisco Alves / PR
 ABSTRACT. The rural school can be one of the main spaces for human transformation, when historicity and local knowledge are taken into account. Therefore, it is essential to have an adequate structure and to recognize mechanisms for building the identity of the subject in the field. Thus, it fosters the development of a sense of belonging that can transform the location where the school is located. In this context, this work aimed to characterize the State School of Campo Padre Antônio Vieira - Elementary School, located in the district of Rio Bonito, municipality of Francisco Alves, Paraná (PR) regarding aspects of environmental education and sustainability. Thus this end, the qualitative aspects were mainly addressed, using documentary research methodologies, environmental perception and focus group analysis. The data obtained were categorized according to the content analysis methodology. From the information obtained, some sensitive points related to the sustainability tripod were observed, such as: In the environmental aspect, it was found the lack of actions aimed at environmental education and few correct environmental practices; In the social aspect, the absence of the feeling of belonging to the school community, devaluation of the teaching-learning process and abandoned garden; In the economic aspect, the families' financial difficulties were observed.

 RESUMEN. La escuela rural puede ser uno de los principales espacios para la transformación humana, cuando se tiene en cuenta la historicidad y el conocimiento local. Por lo tanto, es esencial tener una estructura adecuada y reconocer mecanismos para construir la identidad del sujeto en el campo. Por lo tanto, fomenta el desarrollo de un sentido de pertenencia que puede transformar la ubicación donde se encuentra la escuela. En este contexto, este trabajo tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la Escuela Estatal de Campo Padre Antônio Vieira - Escuela Primaria, ubicado en el distrito de Rio Bonito, municipio de Francisco Alves, Paraná (PR) en relación con aspectos de educación ambiental y sostenibilidad. De esa forma, los aspectos cualitativos se abordaron principalmente, utilizando metodologías de investigación documental, percepción ambiental y análisis de grupos focales. Los datos obtenidos se clasificaron según la metodología de análisis de contenido, estudiada por Bardin (2016). A partir de la información obtenida, se observaron algunos puntos sensibles relacionados con el trípode de sostenibilidad, tales como: En el aspecto ambiental, fue encontrado la falta de acciones dirigidas a la educación ambiental y pocas prácticas ambientales correctas; En el aspecto social, la ausencia del sentimiento de pertenencia a la comunidad escolar, la devaluación del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje y el jardín abandonado; En el aspecto económico, se observaron las dificultades financieras de las familias.

Percepção dos acadêmicos do curso de Administração sobre a Educação Ambiental na Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará, Campus Alenquer

O presente trabalho versa sobre alguns aspectos da educação ambiental e a relevância da sua inserção no ensino superior. Para tanto, a pesquisa tem por objetivo verificar a percepção dos acadêmicos de administração da Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará, Campus Alenquer, no que tange aos conceitos ambientais, assim como, definição de lixo, os processos de coleta, impactos no meio ambiente, sua destinação, entre outros. A metodologia se desenvolveu por meio de pesquisas bibliográficas e levantamento de dados primários, questionários aplicados aos acadêmicos, minutos antes da realização de provas de avaliação, para garantir a participação do número máximo de discentes. Os resultados apresentados reforçam a necessidade da educação ambiental nos cursos de graduação, uma vez que os estudantes tiveram dificuldades para responder às perguntas. Por fim, o estudo enfatiza os principais pontos referentes à temática ambiental e como se relacionam com o campus universitário em estudo, visto que essa apregoa a necessidade da preservação ambiental como manutenção das gerações futuras. Nessa perspectiva, políticas públicas aliada a uma educação ambiental que incentivem às práticas de coletas adequadas para o lixo, são essenciais para conservação ambiental.

Formation of ecological education of the population

This article analyzes the concepts and role of environmental education of the population, and also discusses the problems of forming an ecological outlook among young people in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Solving global issues, including environmental protection, fighting the consequences of the environmental crisis, is comprehensive, including in the field of education. The solution to the vital environmental issues and problems faced by the world community is largely correlated with the prosperity of environmental education and the upbringing of the future generation. In this regard, the pedagogical and social aspects of environmental education and the education of young people is the main issue in the period of modernization in Kazakhstan. The problem of environmental education of young people should be regarded as a sovereign and self-valuable area of the educational development of the people’s personality. The characteristic features include understanding of the goals, objectives and detectors of the effectiveness of education, the orientation of educational interaction in solving global and local environmental issues, reinforcement of environmental education and practical activities of public non-governmental organizations.

Aspectos históricos de la Educación Ambiental: algunas reflexiones epistemológicas desde sucesos dominantes

Este ensayo académico se plantea el objetivo de exponer los aspectos históricos de la Educación Ambiental al presentar la evolución de este campo de conocimiento en contraste con los discursos dominantes, además, de identificar los posicionamientos emergentes y alternativos en contextos particulares. Desde esta perspectiva, se valora que la Educación Ambiental posibilita la comprensión de las múltiples y complejas realidades, y a lo largo de su historia están latentes aproximaciones y comprensiones diversas, lo cual es evidente en los diferentes eventos políticos, además, en las reflexiones académicas. En consecuencia, el análisis de la literatura y de diferentes referentes nacionales e internacional, sugieren la necesidad de consolidación de una epistemología ambiental que nutra la educación, la vinculación con discursos disruptores vinculados con la justicia social y ambiental, además, la consolidación de una Educación Ambiental que transite hacia visiones del mundo sistémicas y complejas, inter y transdiscipliariedades, y por supuesto, se fortalezca desde teorías didácticas y curriculares propias.

Study on the Environmental Education Demand and Environmental Literacy Assessment of Citizens in Sustainable Urban Construction in Beijing

In the process of sustainable urban construction, citizens’ environmental literacy is a decisive factor, and environmental education is an important factor affecting the former’s level. Therefore, by determining the environmental literacy and environmental education demand of 383 citizens, the conclusion of this study is instructive for sustainable urban construction in China and other developing countries. Further, in the study, data were collected through a paper questionnaire and Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SSPS) software version 25 (IBM Corp, BJ, CHN) was used for data analysis. According to our survey, the average score of Beijing citizens’ environmental literacy is 3.77 out of 5, which reflects the necessity to carry out environmental education for the citizen. In order to effectively measure citizens’ environmental literacy, we divided the sample population into three groups according to their evaluation scores of environmental literacy. The social demographic characteristics of the high- and middle-scoring groups showed a higher proportion of women and well-educated people. A higher proportion of working or living stability was reflected in the majority of civil servants, staff of citizen institutions, retirees, and housewives. There were more people over the age of 30, most of whom have lived in Beijing for a long time. “Green lifestyle” and “knowledge and skills of environmental protection” were the aspects of environmental education that the sample group of Beijing citizens generally wants to learn. In addition, citizens in the high- and middle-scoring groups are also more interested in “ecological science knowledge”, while the low-scoring group is more interested in “the knowledge of environmental factors” and “environmental ethics”. The survey respondents showed the highest preference for environmental education (natural education) when participating in outdoor activities, followed by exhibition place and activity, with a relatively low preference for lecture and community activities. Mass media is also an important channel for environmental education, and the use preference and frequency of new media such as MicroBlog, WeChat, and short video applications are much higher than those of traditional media such as television and newspapers.

A systematic approach to schoolchildren’s environmental thinking development and prospective teachers’ training for this work organization

The following paper discusses one of the aspects of environmental education. It is related to the necessity to use a systematic approach for schoolchildrens environmental thinking development. The process of environmental thinking development is linked with environmental education implementation. For a long time, environmental education was considered as an integral part of biological education, but now an interdisciplinary approach to this work is considered. Different models of cognition are also considered, the recognition or denial of which influenced the nature of science development and the content of the educational process. Cognitive models in varying degrees, depending on specific conditions, determined the level and nature of ecological knowledge system development. A systematic approach for schoolchildrens environmental thinking development should be based on the main positions, which are the basis of cognitive models that act as paradigmatic methodological guidelines. The implementation of a systematic approach to environmental thinking development proceeds more successfully when using the practice-oriented approach, which lies at the basis of the lesson and students extracurricular activities organization. The above mentioned approach can be now implemented in the form of project development. While working with students - prospective teachers, ecologization of disciplines is widely implemented.

Экологическое образование как фактор устойчивого экономического развития

The year 2017 is called the year of ecology, because the state of the environment is constantly deteriorating and requires a serious attitude towards itself. The lack of proper environmental education entails misunderstanding and the inability to adequately assess the catastrophic ecological situation that has developed. The article analyzes the components of the university environmental education in Russia: a scientific one, including the theory and methodology of the issue of environmental protection; normative, studying moral, legal and aesthetic issues; value, considering ideals, ideas, goals and defining nature, as a primary value. The problem of environmental education for economists, financiers, managers in the conditions of the “new economy” has been studied. Conclusions are drawn about the need for comprehensive environmental education, which includes economic, social and educational aspects for improving the ecological culture of the society, with a special role of the educational aspect of environmental education.

Student perceptions of the education environment in a Spanish medical podiatry school

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to explore students’ perceptions of the educational environment (EE) in a Spanish school of podiatry. Various aspects of EE were compared by academic year in the program.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire to collect perceptions using data from a 2015 survey. Podiatric medical students from Extremadura University participated in this study. EE was assessed with the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool.The DREEM questionnaire covers five domains of student perceptions, including learning, teachers, academic self-perceptions, atmosphere, and social self-perceptions.ResultsTwo hundred thirty-five students participated, resulting in a 90.73% response rate. Participants included similar numbers of students from different years in the program, and most were women. The global EE score was 2.58 out of 4, indicating that students’ perceptions were more positive than negative. Although some weaknesses were detected in this school, students viewed the EE positively in all five DREEM domains. Academic year in the program were generally not related to perceptions of EE.ConclusionsPodiatric medical students declared, in general, that the EE was more positive than negative in our school, according to the DREEM questionnaire. However, although the results are on the whole good, some areas need to be revised to make improvements.

Some Remarks and Experiences on Higher Education and Sustainable Development

The general objective of this study is to highlight key aspects of environmental education, with specific objectives. Inclusive education addresses the learning needs with a focus on those who are vulnerable to marginalization and exclusion. Ethics plays a vital role in environmental management and should be a cornerstone to raise awareness of new forms of relationship with the particular and global environment. The cosmovision of indigenous peoples should be respected, including the indissoluble union of each culture with the environment. The feminization of labor is relevant in horticulture crops, with an active role of women in the organization of work. The connections between education and the world of work are key, with preparation for new and indeterminate forms of employment, paying attention to social skills in the context of increasing globalization. University Social Responsibility (USR) implies that the University must act ethically in knowledge transfer, promoting sustainable development. Sustainable development involves new systems of thought, it requires creativity and critical thinking, and an alternative is the creation of role-playing, to lead people to thinking in different ways. It is essential that the new professionals act without static patterns, integrating interdisciplinary teams, to search for the answer to a problem, offering original and innovative alternatives.

Organization of Higher Environmental Education in Universities of Ukraine and France: Comparative Pedagogical Analysis

Abstract The article deals with the organization of higher environmental education in France and Ukraine. The main elements of the pedagogical comparison between the two countries have been defined. Scientific and educational literature analysis devoted to the study of specific aspects of environmental education in universities of both countries has been done. Regulatory and legal framework for environmental training in these countries has been researched. The structure of higher education and the ecological system of educational levels both in Ukraine and France have been stipulated. Basic elements of a comparative analysis of higher environmental education in Ukraine and France have been characterized. The main areas of environmental education in universities of France and Ukraine have been determined. Principles of higher environmental education in France, based on the systems of laws and regulations, have been outlined. The importance of design and styling concept of environmental education has been proved. The main reason for increasing trend to expansion of environmental education at various university departments and levels of education has been defined. Milestones of higher environmental education in France and Ukraine have been determined. After the comparative analysis of higher environmental education in France and Ukraine common features of higher education in these countries have been outlined.

Knowledge Management Viability in Academics with Reference to Media and Information Literacy: An Overview

Knowledge management (KM) has emerged to create and leverage intellectual capital into organisation. KM is imperative to retain the wealth of institutional knowledge that retirees or person left would be taking with them. KM integration in academics can play a crucial role to utilise the human resource with media technologies and by spreading media information literacy in the interest of quality education. KM areas are considered for better decision making within organisations/institutions which aids the employees viz., faculty members, admin staff, technical staff and students to participate effectively in decision making; build competitive societal intellectual capital capabilities and develop the knowledge competitive education system. KM applications are generated from all level of the academics, namely, faculty members, libraries, laboratories, workshops, etc. It affects most aspects of education environment of the institution. Its approach and effectiveness determine the education culture, quality of education, success and viability. Its function must be supportive, innovative and collaborative. Part of its work needs to be on the policy level with responsibility to coordinate KM activities in accordance with institution's goals and objectives. Viability of KM is largely depends on leveraging human resources with media technologies and awareness of media and information literacy (MIL) among the students and scholars’ community to develop the critical thinking abilities of students to access, evaluate and use the media-oriented implicit knowledge of human resource. Both KM and MIL skills are associated and employed simultaneously for the best utilisation of human resource and user participation to share and create the knowledge.

The Importance of Participatory Virtues in the Future of Environmental Education

Participatory approaches to environmental decision making and assessment continue to grow in academic and policy circles. Improving how we understand the structure of deliberative activities is especially important for addressing problems in natural resources, climate change, and food systems that have wicked dimensions, such as deep value disagreements, high degrees of uncertainty, catastrophic risks, and high costs associated with errors. Yet getting the structure right is not the only important task at hand. Indeed, participatory activities can break down and fail to achieve their specific goals when some of the deliberators lack what we will call participatory virtues. We will argue for the importance of future research on how environmental education can incorporate participatory virtues to equip future citizens with the virtues they will need to deliberate about wicked, environmental problems. What is the role of education for deliberative skills and virtues relative to other aspects of environmental education, such as facts and values education? How important is it relative to careful design of the deliberative process? What virtues really matter?

A gestão do conhecimento na educação ambiental

A informação e o conhecimento são recursos da educação ambiental (EA) que podem ser desenvolvidos pela gestão do conhecimento (GC). O objetivo do artigo é propor medidas de criação do conhecimento (CC) na melhoria dos resultados da EA. Este estudo é baseado na pesquisa bibliográfica sem verificações empíricas, portanto, tem seus resultados limitados pelo recurso metodológico do ensaio teórico. No entanto, tal limite é o maior estímulo para pesquisas futuras que poderão investigar as aproximações da EA com a GC e o processo de criação do conhecimento (PCC) em investigações empíricas. Como resultados são apresentadas algumas sugestões de desenvolvimento dos requisitos do PCC aos programas de EA: como, a possibilidade do processo SECI desenvolver melhor vários aspectos da educação ambiental como o aprendizado social, as atividades de interação, o diálogo, a troca de experiências, informação e conhecimento, e das diferentes idéias e maneiras de agir, realizadas pela EA e; a possibilidade do Ba desenvolver um espaço propício para a criação de novos conhecimentos ambientais. O artigo traz contribuições acadêmicas à GC ao proporcionar maior discussão e entendimento sobre o PCC; à EA ao possibilitar uma visão diferente embasada no trabalho da informação e do conhecimento sobre os processos pedagógicos desta; sociais ao contribuir com os programas de EA, melhorando suas práticas e, conseqüentemente, contribuindo com um desenvolvimento econômico ecologicamente sustentável.

Understanding Student Learning in Environmental Education in Aotearoa New Zealand

AbstractThis paper seeks to provide a perspective on environmental education in Aotearoa New Zealand. To contextualise this perspective, it illustrates how environmental, socio-cultural and political imperatives have shaped the development of environmental education in this land. These imperatives illuminate the natural history of the country, the connectedness within the worldviews of the indigenous Māori people, the pioneering views of some enlightened European settlers, and tensions between development and conservation. We connect this context with an overview of research in Aotearoa New Zealand into one aspect of environmental education – student learning in schools. Examples from recent research in this area are provided to show how these approaches are contributing to the Aotearoa New Zealand-ness of environmental education.

INCORPORATING THE BEHAVIORAL DIMENSION IN DESIGNING INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR AUTISM

In last two decades environment and behavior studies has profoundly influenced the practice of architecture and there is growing trend towards people-centered and evidence-based design. The field has tremendous application in designing for special needs; most of the researches on designing for special groups, accessibility codes and design guidelines are based on the functional needs of the users, necessity to explore potential of behavioral aspects to design for people with cognitive limitations is felt though. In the present research, the systematic study of behavioral features in autism has provided a wealth of understanding that is applied to the process of design. There are several stages to this research project, in initial stage, learning behaviors of children, their strength and weakness in educational spaces helped in defining ‘enabling environment’ for autism, which is tested in the subsequent stages to provide evidence based body of knowledge that is expected to help architects and designers to design autism friendly inclusive educational spaces. The purpose of this paper is to present the enabling aspects of educational environment for children with autism and measure their affects on functional performance.
