A scientometrics view on sustainable development in surface mining: Everything from the beginning

In summary, the study on sustainable development in the late 20th century aimed to balance economic, social, and environmental factors in open-pit mining. The study found that while mining has negative ecological impacts, it also has positive economic and social benefits. The study analyzed 77 articles and found a growing trend in scientific interest in sustainable development research from 1985 to 2022. This suggests that there has been a growing trend in using qualitative research methods in studies related to sustainable development in the mining industry in the past ten years. This is likely due to a shift in focus toward finding ways to improve the positive impacts and mitigate the negative impacts of this development in light of technology advancements and changes in environmental and social regulations. This highlights the importance of using a comprehensive approach that considers all aspects of sustainable development in studying small-scale mining. Given the significance of small-scale mining to the economies of many mining communities, it is crucial to develop clear regulations and guidelines that align with the principles of sustainable development. This will help ensure that the industry operates responsibly and sustainably. This statement emphasizes the importance of updating research methods to reflect the latest technological advancements and the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable development. As technology and other fields of study continue to advance and intersect with the issue of sustainable development in the mining industry, it is essential to incorporate these new advancements and perspectives into future studies. This will help ensure that research in this area remains relevant and comprehensive.

Towards a Multidimensional Model for Evaluating the Sustainable Effect of FDI on the Development of Host Developing Countries: Evidence from Africa

This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the sustainable impact of FDI on the development of host African countries. Previous empirical studies seem to have overestimated the impact of FDI by limiting its effects to one aspect or sub-aspect of sustainable development. This study focuses on the sustainable/net effect of FDI on development in Africa. To achieve this, a multidimensional model that combines two opposing views (mainstream theory of economic development and dependent theory) was tested. Panel data of 35 African countries with the PMG/ARDL approach were used to probe the sustainable effect of FDI from 1990 to 2020. The key findings of this study reveal that the overall estimated sustainable effect of FDI on real GDP per capita is statistically minuscule for the entire sample. Thus, the effect of FDI on the development of host African countries is not inherently more important. The most striking result that emerged from the data is that environmental degradation is the dominant variable that adversely influences overall development in Africa. Another striking finding that emerged from the data is that income inequality, in general, has a significant negative impact on real GDP per capita in the long run. More importantly, the results of this study confirm that CO2, GINI, and GOV play important roles in the relationship between FDI and African development. Estimates of the error correction term for each specific country are negative and statistically significant. The fastest speed of adjustment was observed in Morocco, while the lowest was recorded in South Africa. Furthermore, this study presents different policy implications based on the long-term results.

Measuring “sustainable development” in vernacular settlements: a case study Behramkale, Türkiye

PurposeThe main objective of this paper is to critically assess sustainable development in the context of Behramkale, a vernacular village in Türkiye.Design/methodology/approachVernacular Heritage Sustainable Architecture analysis framework has been adopted to understand and assess vernacular architecture and sustainable development in Behramkale.FindingsThe vernacular design of the old Behramkale settlement has shown more sustainable characteristics as compared to the new development area. Key findings show that trade-offs were made with respect to environmental and sociocultural aspects of sustainable development to achieve economic sustainability.Research limitations/implicationsFuture research with more in-depth interviews would be helpful to find out the inhabitants’ response to the conservation practices.Practical implicationsBased on the research conducted, life cycle analysis and sustainable strategies of vernacular settlements can be useful tools to design, develop and improve old settlements, as well as newly established settlements.Social implicationsKey lessons learned from conservation practices can help to identify well-adapted solutions to respond to the needs of local communities in Türkiye and similar vernacular settlements in the Mediterranean region.Originality/valueThis paper critically assesses sustainable development in the context of vernacular architecture, heritage conservation and rural sustainability. Conservation practices in Türkiye are evaluated deeply as there is limited research in this field within the Mediterranean heritage conversation and sustainable development context.

Impact of work demand constraints on psychological distress through workplace bullying and personality traits: A moderated-mediation model.

This study addressed the human aspects of sustainable development in organizations by applying work demand resource theory and the main focus of the study is to investigate the negative aspects of workplace bullying on human's mental health. This study investigated how the work demand constraints play a role in increasing psychological distress among employees through the mediation of workplace bullying. This study also considers personality traits that play a role in preventing psychological distress resulting from workplace bullying. The authors collected data by means of a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed among 1000 employees selected using a systematic sampling technique, patronized among three service sectors: the health sector, education sector, and forest department in the city of Lahore in Pakistan. The data was analyzed by employing Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using Smart PLS 3.3.3. Results of this study reveal that work demand constraints (WDC) play a significant role in workplace bullying and impact increasing psychological distress. Personality traits play a moderating role between work demand constraints and workplace bullying behavior on the one hand and psychological distress on the other hand; however, openness to experiences was found to have a moderating relationship between work demand constraints and workplace bullying. Meanwhile, agreeableness and openness to experiences were found to have a moderating relationship between work demand constraints (WDC) and psychological distress. This study also has practical implications for employers, such as providing psychological counseling, personality development training at the workplace etc. The relationship of work demand constraints with psychological distress and workplace bullying through direct and indirect moderating effects of personality traits in Pakistan's service sector are unique contributions of this study.

Natural resources and rational nature management as one of the aspects of sustainable development of the territory

The article deals with natural resources, their organization and rational use from the point of view of ensuring the ecological sustainability of territories. The effective use of natural monuments will create the necessary favorable background for the territories and the life of the population.

Environmental aspects of sustainable regional development

The aim of the present research is to educe the environmental aspects of sustainable development of the regional areas. At present the ecological factors determine largely the opportunities for the economic strength of the regional systems. The article presents the index calculation of the environmental sustainability of the regional system using the example of the Kirov Region. As a result of the research, it was defined that the development of the ecological situation in the region is inclined to be sustainable, and at the same time it is uptrending. The main factors that hamper the improvement in the development of the environmental sustainability of the regional system were educed, some solutions of the problems were offered.

"Dark under the lamp": ecological equity of urban agglomeration from the perspective of natural capital in China.

Although equity is an important aspect of sustainable development, equity research has mainly focused on income and economics while paying insufficient attention to ecological equity. Therefore, aiming to improve our understanding of equity and promote environmental protection, this study introduced natural capital to measure regional ecological equity and analyze its driving factors. Based on ecological footprint (EF) and ecosystem service value (ESV), we constructed evaluation indexes and drew an "ecological Lorentz curve bundle" to analyze ecological equity in the Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration (JUA) from 2009 to 2020. The results showed that economic development in JUA resulted in the severe depletion of natural capital, especially biological and energy resources, and the supply and demand of natural capital was in a low-level equilibrium state. Based on JUA's population base, natural capital utilization in the region had exceeded ecological equity, and the Gini coefficient of EF based on population was close to the international warning value of 0.4. Although economic development in JUA has promoted economic equity, it has also led to environmental inequity. Large cities such as Beijing and Tianjin, as well as industrial cities such as Tangshan and Handan, have had the greatest effects on ecological equity. Moreover, the excessive consumption of natural capital stock and energy-dependent industrial structures threaten ecological equity.

In the Question of Geospatial Information Data Use in the Forestry Legislation Making in Indonesia

The high rate of deforestation and many forest disputes in Indonesia show that forest management in Indonesia is not based on the principles of good forest governance. It also shows that there is still a lack of attention to the aspect of sustainable forest development which focuses on a balanced sustainability condition between the three forest functions (production, ecology, and socio-economic functions). Geospatial Information is expected to be the solution to help provide an accurate data and information which mapping forest development in accordance with the conditions of each forest area, so that the three functions can operate coherently. Furthermore, with the presence of integrated geospatial data, it can be used as a tool in policy formulation, decision making, and/or dispute resolution in the forestry sector. This paper applies empirical juridical research consisting participatory methods through discussions and interviews with related parties. In practice, the legal materials are firstly collected by using inventory and documentation. Then, it’s completed by interviews and Focus Group Discussion data. Moreover, it also applies statutory, conceptual, and case approaches. This paper highlights the use of geospatial information data in the forestry legislation making in Indonesia. Hence, this paper will present new information about the model of forestry dispute resolution based on geospatial information.

Environmental justice: An evolving concept in a dynamic era

AbstractStudies of environmental justice in the United States started more than four decades ago when an African American dominant community was chosen as the site of a hazardous landfill. Many works have emerged since then, evolving around the concepts of distribution justice, representation justice, and recognition justice. Scholars attempt to address the environmental justice topic from a wide range of angles with multiple modern research methods. As an important aspect of sustainable development, we conducted a literature review in an attempt to summarize the progress of environmental justice studies in recent years. Under the broad framework of sustainable development, we investigate the origin of environmental justice studies, the traditional and modern approaches scholars applied to investigate the subject, and the applications of the concepts in recent years, especially in the era of a global pandemic. We also explore the application of environmental justice in recent planning practices. The purposes of the study are to further exploration of environmental justice, and analyze theories and explanations on what causes environmental justice and injustice. This study will pave a way for future advancements in sustainability science that will provide new opportunities and tools to be used by academics, policymakers, and urban planners alike.

Sustainable Shaping of Lightweight Structures Created According to Different Methods

This paper presents the problem of the efficient shaping of spherical structures of geodesic domes, which is the basis for creating a regular octahedron, in the aspect of sustainable development. The proposed two methods of shaping covered by this study differ in the way the dividing points of the initial edges of the regular octahedron are connected, and, therefore, in the way the sphere is shaped. Using different methods, two families of domes with different lengths of struts but with a similar number of them were obtained. The conducted comparative analysis leads to the indication of this method of shaping the topology, thanks to which it is possible to obtain structures with less consumption of construction material, and, consequently, with less weight. Both the geometry and weight indicate the advantages of geodesic domes created using the first subdivision method. The selection of the appropriate method of shaping geodesic domes is a consequence of a sustainable design strategy. The presented structures in the form of geodesic domes, the basis of which is a regular octahedron, can be original, innovative coverings, while the detailed analysis carried out is intended to provide design guidelines that will facilitate both architects and designers.

Opportunities of green lending to finance environmental projects to achieve the principles of sustainable development

Objective: The transition to the green economy is a critical aspect of sustainable development, which requires significant investment flows in low-carbon infrastructure. This transition is being considered by central banks and public and private banking institutions.
 Methods: The article analyzes the essence of green bank lending, describes the characteristics and features of its use, and evaluates the structure of green lending.
 Results: The study has identified the main obstacles to green lending and the main priorities of banking institutions involved in the development of green lending. Authors highlights the need to adapt financial institutions to new realities and prioritize green investment risks when establishing green financial institutions through the adaptation of green lending practices.
 Conclusion: In the article the problems and priorities of green lending in the global banking market and emphasizes the importance of sustainable development practices and administration in the financial sector were considered.

The coastal area is an area that has the potential to be developed, but the coastal area must also be conserved by making efficient use of coastal resources and utilizing the function of the area in a planned and rational manner, including at Prigi Beach in Watulimo District, Trenggalek Regency. The strategy for developing coastal areas in Trenggalek Regency has been stated in Regional Regulation Number 15 of 2012 concerning Spatial Planning of Trenggalek Regency for 2012-2032. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach in an effort to understand the sustainability of coastal development in Trenggalek Regency. Data were obtained through observation, documentation, and interviews with the head of Bappeda (Regional Development Planning Agency of Trenggalek Regency) and the community around Prigi Beach, Trenggalek Regency. Data analysis techniques with interactive models are data collection, data condensation, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Aspects of sustainable development in Watulimo District, Trenggalek Regency include (1) ecology, the existence of Prigi Bay provides benefits in the fields of Tourism, Fisheries and Marine, namely Prigi Beach, Damas Beach, Cengkrong Beach, Mangrove Tourism Forest, Karanggongso White Sand Beach and Pearl Beach. (2) the economy, the low income of fishermen in Prigi is also influenced by natural conditions, so that the fishing process cannot take place throughout the year and (3) social, the fishermen community empowerment program in Prigi has been implemented by the Government to improve the fishing community but the program has not running optimally.

Assessment of the sustainable use of chemicals on a level playing field.

Misleading conclusions can result from applying tools beyond the purposes for which they were designed. A range of chemical assessment systems was compared against a set of principles germane to the sustainable use of chemicals relevant to the whole societal life cycles of finished products. These principles of sustainable use included: wider dimensions of sustainability, a foundation in science, consideration of life-cycle risk rather than simply intrinsic chemical properties, contributions to meeting human needs, open access, and peer review. A transparent basis in science is important for deriving objective, comparable, and replicable sustainability-based findings across materials and applications, and for guiding innovation. Few assessment systems currently identify how use of substances contributes to meeting human needs, a vital albeit often overlooked aspect of sustainable development, with most based largely on potential hazard without addressing wider life-cycle exposure and risk assessment. Qualitatively differing substances were illustratively assessed against the sustainability principles and life-cycle context of the Additive Sustainability Footprint (ASF), aspects of this analysis highlighting how differing material sourcing, manufacturing, and management in-use and at end-of-life can lead to widely divergent sustainability assessments. These illustrative ASF assessments also demonstrate that material use challenges, assessed on a systemic basis, are common across materials, with no defensible automatic assumption that there are inherently "good" or "bad" materials; differing stewardship across whole product life cycles substantially influences sustainability credentials for all materials. It is therefore important that the sustainability performance of all materials is assessed on an objective "level playing field," which also highlights "hot spots" for sustainable innovation from supply-chain management through manufacturing, substance selection by material compounders, maintenance inputs in product use, and beyond product end-of-life. Chemical regulation must evolve to include and embed wider sustainability principles into operational practice and become applicable and enforced across increasingly global value chains. Maneuvering strategies for combating agricultural remonstrance in south Asian countries with special reference to India

In 2015, member states of the United Nations approved the 2030 agenda for sustainable development that was to be achieved through 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals aim to build on the previous work done under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The 17 SDGs have 169 targets, which have been designed to take a holistic approach to address the socio, economic and environmental aspects of sustainable development. Among that goal 2 of the SDGs aims to end hunger, end all forms of malnutrition, double agricultural productivity, enhance income of small-scale farmers, ensure an environmentally sustainable food production system and enhancement of the genetic diversity of seeds as well as cultivated plants. It is explicit in its aim of tackling malnutrition. Although there have been great strides towards hunger reduction in the past 3 decades due to increase in production during post green revolution. However, malnutrition remains continued and micronutrient deficiencies are stubbornly high along with inter and intra-regional inequalities and poverty persistence. Therefore, the challenges in the way of achieving the SDGs remain very high. What is acknowledged in the SDGs approach is that promoting growth and development in the agricultural sector is crucial for improving food security and nutritional status in South East Asian developing countries. Hence, multi-sectoral factors - a food system approach-viz; access to clean drinking water, sanitation, women's empowerment, behavior change and overall investments in public health are very important that promote the supply and affordability of a nutritious diet for successfully meeting SDG 2. Thus, SDGs give an added emphasis on sustainable food systems with a focus on environmental issues and genetic diversity.

Analysis of Microsoft’s Sustainable Development during post-COVID-19

In the post-pandemic era, the problem of environmental degradation become serious. Environmental protection has aroused the wide concern of the international community. And global economic development is still not optimistic. How enterprises achieve their stable development in the turbulent economic landscape has also attracted great attention. But there is still a lack of unified cognition about the sustainable development of three aspects (environment, society, and economy) of enterprises. Therefore, this paper takes Microsoft as an example to explore how enterprises can achieve sustainable development in the post-pandemic era. This paper uses Swot analysis to analyze the development status of Microsoft. Then present Microsoft’s strategies in three aspects of sustainable development, and finally puts forward the problems and suggestions for Microsoft. This paper finds that Microsoft has made detailed measures in the environmental and social aspects, but still has some shortcomings in the economic aspect, which needs to be paid more attention to in the future.

Advancing aspects of social sustainability dimension in shipping: exploring the role of corporate social responsibility in supporting the Seafarer Human Sustainability Declaration framework

ABSTRACT The concept of sustainable development has entered the shipping industry for good. A recent example relates to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals presented by the United Nations in 2015, which pushed the shipping industry, through the International Maritime Organization, to take early action and recognize the strong impact of shipping on sustainable development. Since then, and alongside the regulatory framework, a number of side steps have been taken by the industry to strengthen the social aspects of sustainable development in shipping. Recently, one of them refers to the Seafarer Human Sustainability Declaration, launched in April 2022. In view of such a development, this article explores whether corporate social responsibility is able to meet the demands of this recent Declaration, thereby helping the shipping industry to achieve the social aspects of sustainable development in shipping. Based on the results of an applied content analysis method, we argue that corporate social responsibility can adequately cover aspects of social sustainability and is therefore, recommended as an effective voluntary tool. However, further initiatives and reform of the regulatory framework are needed to address issues related to seafarers’ families, which have been highlighted as a vital element of Seafarers Declaration.

The Impact of Sustainable Development and Reliability on the Performance of Russian Enterprises in the Context of an Economic Fragmentation

Modern waves of crises associated with the pandemic and geopolitical tensions threaten the achievement of sustainable development goals and stimulate a rethinking of the essence and role of operational reliability in achieving the balanced development of organizations. The purpose of the article is to assess the impact of sustainable development practices and ensuring the reliability of enterprise functioning on the performance of Russian industrial enterprises in the context of the observed fragmentation of the world economy associated with deglobalization trends, increased sanctions pressure and disruptions in supply chains in developed and developing countries. The methodological basis of the study was the concepts of green economy and the development of production systems associated with frugality and reliability. Factor analysis and linear regression were chosen as research methods to assess individual variables of greening production, lean production and operational reliability as aspects of sustainable development of Russian industrial enterprises. The empirical basis was based on data from a survey of 225 employees of metallurgical and mechanical engineering enterprises in the Sverdlovsk region, conducted at the beginning of 2023. The structured questionnaire developed by the authors made it possible to identify various aspects of sustainable development and reliability. Based on the results of factor analysis, a number of heterogeneous theoretical constructs in the field of frugality, green economy, enterprise reliability and their operational performance were identified and confirmed. Regression analysis showed that, on the one hand, the practices of frugality and reliability have a positive effect on the operational performance of industrial enterprises in the region, which confirms the need to reduce implicit costs while ensuring a sufficient level of reliability; on the other hand, adhering to the principles of the green economy has a negative impact on the operational performance of industrial enterprises in the short term. The inconsistency of the results obtained regarding the environmental aspect of sustainable development does not mean a refusal to achieve the goals of a green economy, but indicates the need to revise investment policies and development strategies in the context of economic fragmentation, taking into account the characteristics of the development of industrial enterprises.

Аграрний сектор економіки України: візія фінансового контексту досягнення цілей сталого розвитку

The agricultural sector of the economy has a great potential to influence various aspects of sustainable development, such as economic stability, social equality, and ecological balance. However, one of the critical problems in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is the limitation of financial resources, which significantly narrows the opportunities of the agricultural sector and holds back its post-war recovery based on the green economy. The article's purpose is to typologize the theoretical and methodological foundations of the sustainable ontogenesis of the agricultural sector of the Ukrainian economy, taking into account the mutual influences and interdependencies between development and the financial and regulatory context of achieving the agro-oriented Sustainable Development Goals. The article analyses tasks and indicators and presents the empirical basis for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of overcoming hunger and developing agriculture adapted to the realities of Ukraine. The problems of the agricultural sector of the economy, which the government tried to solve during the 2000-2020s, were identified, and the interdependence between these problems and the agro-oriented Sustainable Development Goals was established. The financial context of programs supporting the sustainable development of the agrarian sector of the economy in the pre-war period was determined, and their content, advantages and disadvantages were systematically characterized. The fact of systemic lagging of niche-sectoral financial support programs for agricultural commodity producers from reforms in the public finance management system and its derivatives has been revealed. The study results indicate that Ukraine's agricultural sector is currently at the crossroads between stability and sustainable development, with the former being predominant. In this regard, it is necessary to ensure the transition from state support to state aid (for specific branches of the sector), from state support for crop production to state support for livestock production, and from infrastructure financing to the development of the Institute of Rural Construction.

Companies are now expected not only to achieve financial success but also to contribute positively to the well-being of society and the environment. In this context, Aptiv, a global technology company, stands out as a beacon of sustainable development. This article explores how Aptiv integrates sustainable practices into its operations, with a particular emphasis on Organizational Alignment and the Theory of Planned Behavior. By examining Aptiv's sustainability documentation, authors delve into how the company addresses various aspects of sustainable development and aligns with specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Design/methodology/approach: The research employs case study and company documents analysis to understand structural and perceptual aspects of Organizational Alignment in reaching SDGs. Findings: The findings suggest that aligning organizational structures with SDGs, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of planned behavior factors, can serve as a strategic approach for fostering successful sustainability initiatives within organizations. This dual approach addresses both the structural and behavioral aspects, offering a more holistic framework for achieving sustainable development objectives. Research limitations/implications: Research limitation lies in single source case study, suggesting the need for broader research encompassing a more extensive range of organizations. Future studies should consider both the size and the industry-specific characteristics of organizations to enhance the generalizability of findings. Practical implications: The case study serves as a blueprint, demonstrating how successful organizations strategically integrate sustainability practices to achieve tangible and impactful results. Originality/value: This paper contributes novelty by addressing a research gap through its focus on a limited number of case studies detailing specific organizations' successful implementation of SDGs. Its value lies in providing actionable insights and strategic guidance for organizations aiming to effectively integrate SDGs, particularly suitable for those seeking practical examples and success stories in the realm of sustainability initiatives.
