The primary basis for this book is an extensive documentation of the clinical experience of 29 patients who had liver transplantation (orthotopic and auxiliary) performed by the author and his associates. In addition, this material is supplemented by discussions of other reported cases of liver transplantation and by the experiences of the author and others in renal transplantation and extensive animal work. All aspects of liver transplantation are covered: problems of donor and recipient selection and surgical, anesthetic, and medical considerations. Histocompatibility and immunosuppression are discussed from aspects of practical considerations and theoretical possibilities. There is an excellent discussion of the pathological changes that occur during the process of rejection and those which are probably related to transplantation itself.
