The experience of using hydraulic filling for building up the embankments of the existing ash dump of a thermal power station operating on coals with a high ash content showed the following: 1. The method of building up an ash dump without increasing the areas of the land allotment can substantially lengthen the service life of the ash dump. 2. The combined scheme of buildup with interlayering sand and ash and the creation of a reliable drainage system around the entire perimeter of each buildup level, and also the creation of a surcharging cushion of a hydraulic-fill sand layer on the first buildup level can create a reliable system of the ash dump. 3. The hydraulic-fill method of constructing the levels of the embankments being built up from a sand-gravel mixture provides a high density and good fractional distribution of the soil particles. 4. To organize continuous operation of a power station, the most advisable scheme is that of working on three sections of the ash dump, one of which should be in the stage of buildup, one in the stage of filling with ash, and one should “rest,” which improves the seepage conditions and consolidation of the ash foundation.
