A proteolytic activity at pH 7.6 was determined in the endostyle of the ascidianStyela plicata. With the use of specific inhibitors, it was demonstrated that a tryptic-like alkaline protease, TLCK-dependent, is involved.
1. 1. The metabolism of progesterone-4- 14C ∗ by the ripe gonads of the ascidian Styela plicata Lesueur was studied in vitro. 2. 2. The testicular and ovarian metabolite profiles were qualitatively similar and included the following steroids identified by their isopolarity and isomorphicity with standard compounds: 20α- and 20β-dihydroprogesterone, 5α-pregnanedione and 5α-pregnan-3β-ol-20-one. 3. 3. The testis metabolized progesterone more intensely and yielded a lower 20α-/20β-dihydroprogesterone ratio than the ovary. 4. 4. Androgens and corticosteroids were formed by neither tissues.
