‘Being an artist you kind of, I mean, you get used to excellence’: Identity, Values and Fine Art Assessment Practices

AbstractIn this article I report on a study into fine art lecturers’ assessment practices in higher education. This study explores the ways that lecturers bring themselves into the act of assessment (Hand & Clewes 2000). I interviewed twelve fine art lecturers who worked across six English universities. Lecturers were asked to relate to me how they learnt to assess student artwork and what informed their judgement making. My research explores the interfaces between fine art lecturers’ assessment practices, their values and identity/ies. My analysis offers a rendering of the ways that values underpin lecturers’ assessment practices. The article explores the ways that lecturers’ assessment decisions relate to their experiences as ex art students, their identity as artists, their own artistic practices, their conceptualisation of the arts arenas and the HE sector. My key overarching argument is that identity/ies and values underpin and enrich fine art lecturers’ assessment practices.

We kind of try to merge our own experience with the objectivity of the criteria: The role of connoisseurship and tacit practice in undergraduate fine art assessment

This article explores connoisseurship in the context of fine art undergraduate assessment practice. I interviewed twelve fine art lecturers in order to explore and unpack the concept of connoisseurship in relation to subjectivity, objectivity and tacit practice. Building on the work of Bourdieu (1973, 1977, 1986) and Shay (2003, 2005), both of whom problematize the view that subjectivity and objectivity are binary opposites, my research illustrates the ways that connoisseurship is underpinned by informed professional judgements located in communities of practice. Within this particular conception of connoisseurship, the lecturers' expertise is co-constituted in communities of assessors through participation and engagement. Standards reside in communities of practice.

ESGE Newsletter

The ESGE sponsored Endoscopy Workshop took place in Yaroslavl (Russia) on July the 1st and 2nd, 2010. This was the first time that an official ESGE activity was organized in Russia, and it could not have been more successful. The event had been very well prepared in all the details by the local organizing committee chaired by Dr Serghey Kashin with the support of the local administrative powers, both political and academic. On the other hand, ESGE and ESGENA together with the official technical sponsors Olympus and Cook Endoscopy gave, once again, the proof of a perfect symbiotic organizing effort leading to a great success. More than 350 doctors coming from all over Russia, but also from several surrounding countries attended the meeting, together with more than 60 nurses. The program, as usual, comprehended both state of the art lectures and live demonstrations broadcasted to the beautiful Auditorium of the House of the Government of the Yaroslavl Region from the state-of-the-art equipped Endoscopy Unit of the Oncological Centre of Yaroslavl, directed by Dr. Kashin. Six ESGE experts, Guido Costamagna (Italy) (who was also Co-Director of the Workshop together with Boris Poddubny, President of the Russian Society of Digestive Endoscopy), Hans-Dieter Allescher (Germany), Thierry Ponchon (France), Olivier Le Moine (Belgium), Stefan Seewald (Switzerland) and Hiroshi Kashida (Japan) with the excellent assistance of 4 ESGENA experts (Michael Ortmann – Switzerland, Sylvia Lahey – The Netherlands, Jadranka Brljak – Croatia, and Herta Pomper – Austria) and the indispensable help of Russian doctors and nurses were able to treat more than twenty five patients during the live sessions. Several endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic techniques were demonstrated: EMR and ESD and ploypectomy in the upper and lower GI tract, single-balloon enteroscopy, EUS-guided FNA and pancreatic cyst drainage, esophageal stent placement, biliary stones removal, stenting of the bile duct, etc. The technical support of Olympus and Cook Endoscopy has been, as usual, of paramount importance for the smooth progress of the program. Parallel to the main session, there were special sessions dedicated to nurses, both theoretical and practical (hands-on). In particular, the hands-on training which was very much appreciated by the attendees, has been realized thanks to the enormous effort put in this activity by the team of Olympus Europe.

Microbial Biofilms: Our Life with Them

From 2 to 5 September 2009, Rome was the venue of Eurobiofilms 2009, providing the 408 participants with a valuable forum for a multidisciplinary scientific exchange in the field of microbial biofilms. The congress joined together microbiologists and specialists in infectious diseases, hygiene and public health involved in investigating different aspects of bacterial and fungal biofilms as well as in designing innovative approaches to prevention and treatment. The scientific program was developed together with the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Study Group on Biofilms (ESGB) to combine state of the art lectures and sessions dealing with the major issues of this fast-growing area of science.

Karl D. Nolph State of the Art Lecture: Feasible and Future Options for Salvation of the Peritoneal Membrane

A review is given of the various available strategies that can be used to protect the peritoneal membrane. A discussion of experimental studies on approaches that are still experimental, but that might be applied in patients in the future, follows. The currently available approaches include dietary sodium restriction, use of high-dose loop diuretics and of inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system. All should preferably be combined with a dialysis prescription aimed at reducing the patient's exposure to glucose and its degradation products. The experimental studies indicate favorable effects of combining osmotic agents, together with drugs that interfere with the polyol pathway and the formation of advanced glycosylation end-products.

Educational Trial to Draw Out the Intellectual Curiosity of Students and the Impact of Newly Introduced Lecture “Mathematics and Wasan Culture”

The entrance examination for Japan′s university lays a great emphasis on multiple-choice questions, so most of high school students are said to be taught in a way that memorizing the formulae mechanically is the shorter route to high score in test than ever. The best cure for rote memorizing and formulism is to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of undergraduate students newly entering universities. We must make classes more appealing to the freshmen if we are to draw out and cultivate their intellectual curiosity. In Shinshu University, every affiliated faculty assists the Center of Development of Higher Education Programs by sending professors to give the Liberal Arts Lectures from special field of their own. This paper presents the very constructive trial to draw out the intellectual curiosity of the science course students in Shinshu University. Discussions are made on the role of Lecture “Mathematics and Wasan Culture” in stimulating student′s interest. Wasan, the traditional Japanese Mathematics made amazing development as very advanced mathematics equivalent to Western Mathematics. It was widely applied to several technical areas such as map manufacture, astronomical observation and reclamation construction in the era of Edo Period. Especially, an analytical technique in search of a center of gravity of an object is explained by many old Wasan mathematicians. In this lecture, the author used Wasan Problems as the teaching materials. As one of means to improve the analyzing sense of science phenomena, the students learn the old technique used by Wasanka who did not know any formulae of Western Mathematics.

Whither…the future for contact dermatitis? A report from the 2007 International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis

In our report we summarize presentations made at the International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis meeting which took place at the St John's Institute of Dermatology, London, on 1 June 2007, and which brought together over 100 dermatologists from the U.K., continental Europe and the U.S.A. During this small and informal meeting, the state-of-the art lectures on various aspects of contact dermatitis were followed by energetic discussions.

News from the Education & Professional Standards Committee

It was nice to meet with many of you at the EUROSON congress in Timisoara. The congress was a great opportunity for enhanced education in ultrasonography and the organisers did a splendid job to include many postgraduate courses and state-of-the art lectures in the programme.

Autumn 2007 Meeting of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists

AbstractOver 100 members attended the Autumn 2007 Meeting of ABCD to hear state of the art lectures on diabetes‐related clinical topics and to debate the pros and cons of the Quality and Outcomes Framework for Diabetes. As always, professional discussion and exchange of views and experiences outside the official programme of the Meeting were as important as the set lectures. These bi‐annual meetings afford an important insight into the state of affairs in the specialist diabetes service, not an altogether happy one at present. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons.
