Functional ionic liquid from biorenewable materials: synthesis and application as a catalyst in direct aldol reactions

A new room temperature ionic liquid (IL) (2-hydroxyethyl)-trimethyl-ammonium ( S)-2-pyrrolidinecarboxylic acid salt ([Choline][Pro]) has been synthesized from biorenewable and nontoxic raw materials (choline chloride and l(−)-proline) in a simple and relative green route. The IL has been demonstrated to be the efficient catalyst of the direct aldol reactions between ketones and aromatic aldehydes in water at room temperature. The aldol products can be obtained with good yields and the IL in aqueous phase can be separated easily and reused.

AbstractThe introduction of siloxy groups at the hydroxy function of natural threonine resulted in efficient hydrophobic organocatalysts, which could efficiently catalyze the direct aldol reactions of both cyclic and acyclic ketones with aromatic aldehydes in water with excellent enantiomeric excess.

Organo-base mediated Cannizzaro reaction

The organo-base, 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine, mediates the Cannizzaro reaction of reactive aromatic aldehydes in water thus providing the corresponding alcohols and acids. Application of formaldehyde as a sacrificial aldehyde for the cross-Cannizzaro reaction is also presented.

All the reactions occur in a short time with excellent yields of steroselective hetarylpropanones in water as environmental friendly solvent.

The effects of aromatic and aliphatic anionic surfactants on Sc(OTf) 3-catalyzed Mukaiyama aldol reaction in water

Aromatic ( 2c and 2d ) and aliphatic ( 2a and 2b ) anionic surfactants were employed in Sc(OTf) 3-catalyzed aldol reactions of some labile silyl enol ethers ( 3a and 3b ) with aromatic aldehydes in water. The results indicated that the aromatic surfactants have a better ability to inhibit the hydrolysis of labile silyl enol ethers and promote the aldol reaction, leading to higher yields of aldol adducts.
