Pattern of Hand Clasping and Arm Folding among the Three Groups of Kondhs of Orissa(India).

Hand clasping and arm folding in a sample of 704 individuals from three groups of Kondh tribe of Orissa are reported. The three groups under study, i.e., Kutia, Dongoria and Kuvi, do not exhibit any remarkable differences. The distribution of “R” type is highest in the present population. Moreover, the present data has been compared with the available data in respect of some populations in India. Statistically, the Kondhs show a closer affinity with that of other populations of India.

Dual-pedicle dermoparenchymal mastopexy.

Mastopexy for treatment of breast ptosis, with or without augmentation or reduction, is often followed by recurrent ptosis. A new mastopexy technique is described which appears to offer long-term correction. After conservative resection of excess skin, the breast parenchyma is elevated from the chest wall, and redundant caudal deepithelialized breast tissue is divided into two equal (or unequal) superiorly based pedicles. These are criss-crossed (as in folding of arms), overlapped, and secured to the pectoral fascia in a position cephalad to the nipple-areolar complex. This technique, dual-pedicle dermoparenchymal mastopexy (DPM), forms a cone of the breast tissue and provides a "cradle" of support. It permits insertion of a prosthesis if needed. Based, in part, on concepts of traditional and more recently described pedicled breast reductions, it enjoys the advantage of preserving skin attachment to underlying unresected breast parenchyma. In addition, it repositions ptotically displaced breast parenchyma into a cephalad position and fixes it (the "pexy") to the chest wall. A 10-year experience is presented with representative cases to illustrate the basic mastopexy and its use with augmentation or reduction.

Handedness, cerebral lateralization, and measures of "latent left-handedness".

Two surveys were conducted to investigate the relationship between handedness and various variables that have been considered to be either more fundamental indices of an underlying laterality than handedness or have been proposed as moderating the relationship between handedness and cerebral lateralization. In the first survey (N = 686), sighting eye dominance was found to be related to handedness. In the second (N = 799), arm folding and leg crossing, but not hand clasping or spreading the fingers, were found to be related to handedness. Although these variables are correlated with handedness, they do not have the properties that would make them likely to improve prediction of cerebral lateralization.

Correlates of the Dichotic Right-Ear Effect

A total of 302 subjects were tested on a verbal dichotic listening task and a variety of measures related to lateralization, including familial sinistrality, sighting eye dominance, handwriting position, and arm folding behavior. The majority of these subjects were more accurate on the right ear in the dichotic testing, and this right-ear advantage (REA) was correlated with handedness. Handwriting position, arm folding, and familial sinistrality (FS), considered in isolation, were not able to improve the prediction of the REA. There was, however, a significant effect of sighting eye, and an interaction between handedness, sighting eye and FS. Left-eyed subjects, regardless of handedness, showed weaker REAs than right-eyed subjects. This effect was most obvious in FS- right-handers and in FS+ left-handers. These data suggest that knowledge of sighting eye dominance may assist in the prediction of cerebral lateralization of language functions.

14 population groups of Sikkim (India)--Lepchas (2), Bhutias (2), Sherpas, Tamangs, Gurungs, Mangars, Rais, Limboos/Subbas, Pradhans (Newars), Brahmans, Chhetris, Scheduled Castes--have been studied in regard of the intra- and intergroup variability of colour blindness, ear lobe attachment, mid-phalangeal hair and behavioural traits (tongue folding, hand clapsing, arm folding, leg folding, handedness). Some of these variables show a considerable distribution heterogeneity, which is discussed considering history and marriage patterns of these populations. As most of them are highly endogamous one can assume that this heterogeneity is caused by locally acting factors such as drift and/or founder effects, which could be preserved due to as good as lacking gene flow among the populations under study. Beyond that the Sikkim data are compared briefly with those reported for other Indian and Asiatic populations.

Metaphase chromosome folds and X-inactivation.

To evaluate the suggested nonrandom folding of Xq13-q21 (center of Barr body condensation) of the inactivated X chromosomes, metaphases from nine subjects with or without X chromosome abnormalities (eight females and one male) were investigated with RBG-staining. A significant increase (p less than .05) in the number of arm folds (Xq13-q21) of the late-replicating X chromosome, particularly in early to mid-metaphase, was observed in four of eight females. Therefore, the stage of chromosome contraction was an important factor with more folds observed at the centromeres and in longer chromosomes in early metaphase compared with mid- to late metaphase. X chromosome folds were present in cells of subjects treated with or without bromodeoxyuridine. While our study agrees with the relationship of Xq13-q21 fold with the X-inactivation center, the correlation of extended chromosomes and folding limits this method as a sole indicator of X-inactivation in routine mid-metaphase, but is useful in the analysis of early metaphase chromosomes.

Characteristic folding pattern of polytene chromosomes in Drosophila salivary gland nuclei.

A computer-based system for recording and analysing light microscope images, combined with classical cytogenetic analysis, has revealed the spatial organization of the giant chromosomes of Drosophila salivary gland cells. Each polytene chromosome arm folds up in a characteristic way, contacts the nuclear surface at specific sites and is topologically isolated from all other arms.

An anthropological study of the Malay and the Chinese of Malaysia.

Data for the ABO blood groups and for handclasping, arm folding, handedness, ear lobe types and camptodactyly are presented for 104 Malay and 57 Chinese males in the city of Alor Star, Kedah, Malaysia. The two groups exhibit marked differences in the frequencies of most of these attributes.

Earlobe attachment, hand clasping and arm folding among Tamil Brahmans in relation to cultural and ethnic affiliations.

The traits, earlobe attachment, hand clasping and arm folding, are found to show a high degree of homogeneity in the Tamil Brahmans. The latter appear to be closest to the Bengali Brahmans, with respect to all three traits, and differ significantly from other Brahman populations, with respect to earlobe.

AbstractAmong 1,438 persons in four Solomon Island populations, handclasp showed no age, sex, or tribal differences. The percentage of R‐claspers (right thumb on top), 66.4, exceeded those previously reported for Caucasian and Mongoloid peoples and resembled those for Oceanic and African samples. Handclasp was associated with handedness but not with armfold; it showed no assortative mating and no simple form of inheritance. Armfold showed an age association (more R‐folders among the youngest children), but none with sex or tribe, no assortative mating, and no pattern of inheritance. Its frequency, 41.4%, resembled those of populations around the world. Left handedness, 2.8% over all four tribes, paralleled contact with Western culture.

SummaryThe authors examined the manner of clasping the hands (HC) and folding the arms (AF) in 415 unrelated pupils, aged from 9 to 15, of the Budapest school “Horváth Imre”. As refers to HC, 54.2% of the total material was found to be «L» (55.2% in ♂ and 53.2% in ♀), while concerning AF, 62.9% of the total material was found to be “L” (60.4% in ♂ and 65.5% in ♀). No significant difference between sexes could be observed. On the basis of a test constructed by the authors and supposed to be connected with handedness, every pupil examined was marked by a “point number for left-handedness” (PNLH). New observations drawn from our data are: (1) the PNLH average of right-handed pupils is somewhat higher in ♂ than in ♀ (2) a higher PNLH average is found, both for HC and AF, in the group of “L” individuals; (3) as the most striking phenomenon, the group of “R” type girls for HC (marked as “1”) contains a significantly high number of“absolutely right-handed”. This observation suggests that there may be a latent connection between HC, AF and laterality, but the lack of a simple and manifest coherence between these characteristics makes it inadequate to apply HC and AF as tests for handedness.
