An alternative approach to method effects by using latent-variable models: Applications in organizational behavior research.

Recent research in the area of organizational behavior on social desirability and negative affectivity as potential sources of artifactual covariance is reviewed. Next, an example of a latent-variable structural equation approach is presented as a more appropriate strategy for analyzing method effects that circumvents problems associated with prior statistical techniques. This example illustrates the specification of a structural equation model with and without method effects and describes the sequence of model comparisons that provides direct tests for the presence of method effects and for the impact of these effects on estimates of substantive relationships. Finally, this latent-variable approach is discussed with regard to other potential applications involving method effects. SYSTEMS APPROACH FOR CONSTRUCTING DYNAMIC MOTIVATION MODELS

Abstract Most model constructs in organization studies are descriptive in nature, and the conclusions relating to the model behavior over time are speculative. The comparative study of different theories suffers from the same type of vague qualitative methodology to model hypotheses in organization studies and to examine their dynamic behavior explicitly. The well-known March and Simon motivation model is used to demonstrate the step by step application of System Dynamics to models of this type. The dynamic behavior of the model, both transient and steady state, is obtained. Even though the paper has focused on one model in the area of individual behavior, the approach is general and can be applied to other areas of organizational behavior as well.
