The objective of this study was to map and characterize soil use and occupation in the city of Teresina-PI, using remote sensing techniques. For the analysis were acquired the aerial images of the year 1983 and satellite images of 2005 – Quick Bird and made the classification of the objects of these with area calculation by the delimitation method. Two thematic classes (vegetation and residential) were defined for the characterization and mapping. The choice of classes took into account elements of greater representativeness in the landscape. After the classification of the images, it was identified the percentage that each thematic class occupies in the municipality. For digital image processing, classification and area calculation, he used a stereoscope, scanner and ArcGis 9.3 software. Therefore, the municipality of Teresina underwent transformations in its landscape. The vegetation suffered a significant decrease turning into buildings as a consequence of the increase of areas of human occupation. However, the results obtained with the procedures performed for this research proved to be efficient for the monitoring and monitoring of landscape transformations. Remote sensing, accompanied by fieldwork contributes to the monitoring of landscape transformations and enables the creation of assistance mechanisms in the planning and organization of the territory.
