Southern Hemispheric jet swing linked to Arctic stratospheric polar vortex

Our study reframes our understanding of stratosphere–troposphere interactions, traditionally thought to be confined within individual hemispheres, by introducing a novel cross-hemispheric link. We demonstrate that strong boreal winter Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (APV) boosts the transmission of upper tropospheric waves from Northern Hemisphere’s mid-high latitudes to the equator. Facilitated by the tropical central and eastern Pacific’s ‘westerly bridge’, these waves reach Southern Hemisphere’s mid-high latitudes. The entire process shows a ‘semicircular road’. Waves reaching the Southern Hemisphere affect the circulation through wave-flow interaction, causing a southward swing of the Southern Hemispheric westerly jet center. This displacement weakens the subtropical jet and strengthens the polar jet, resulting in increased subtropical precipitation and decreased mid-latitude precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere during austral summer. Correspondingly, a weak APV may lead to the opposite result. Our findings underscore APV’s broader impact on the tropospheric atmosphere, extending beyond prior knowledge.

Impact of stratospheric variability on subseasonal temperature reversals during late winter over the mid-high latitudes of East Asia

Significant phase shifts in winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies have successively occurred in East Asia (EA) during recent years, leading to detrimental effects on socio-economic activities. In this study, we identify the fourth principal mode of month-to-month SAT variations over EA in winter (November–February) using the Season-reliant Empirical Orthogonal Function (S-EOF) analysis. The fourth S-EOF mode (S-EOF4) represents subseasonal SAT reversals over the mid-high latitudes of EA during late winter (January–February), with cold (warm) anomalies over Northeastern Asia in January and widespread warm (cold) anomalies over midlatitude EA in February. Results indicate that the cold-to-warm S-EOF4 is associated with a northward shift of the Siberian High in January and a quasi-barotropic low-pressure system over the Ural region in February. The formation of the S-EOF4 is accompanied by stratospheric temperature anomalies over eastern Siberia–Alaska in January. Stratospheric warming corresponds to cold-to-warm transitions over the mid-high latitudes of EA, and vice versa. Further investigation suggests that stratospheric warming would simultaneously lead to a weakened Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (SPV), which mainly stretches into Northern Eurasia and directly influences cold anomalies over Northeastern Asia in January. The delayed impact of stratospheric variability on the reversal of EA SAT anomalies is accomplished by an “ocean bridge” of the midlatitude North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. The weakened SPV promotes anomalous westerly winds in the midlatitude North Atlantic and generates a significant SST cooling, which then regulates a cyclonic anomaly over the Ural region and results in warm anomalies over the midlatitude EA in February. The bridge role of the North Atlantic SST anomaly is well supported by a linear baroclinic model. In addition, the deepening of the Aleutian Low in December could significantly enhance the climatological wavenumber 1, serving as the tropospheric precursor of stratospheric warming. These findings contribute to an in-depth comprehension of EA subseasonal temperature variability, offering valuable insights for enhancing seasonal prediction strategies.

Linking Arctic stratospheric polar vortex weakening to rising CO2-induced intensification of the Indo-Pacific warm pool during the past five decades

Accompanying the global rise in greenhouse gas emissions, a warming trend in the Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) has exerted a discernible influence on tropical atmosphere–ocean interactions. However, the impact of this intensification of the IPWP on the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (ASPV) remains unclear. In this study, we revealed a link between the changes in the IPWP and ASPV during the early winter months, with nearly half of the weakening in the ASPV attributable to the intensification of the IPWP from 1968 to 2020. Wave trains triggered by the elevated SST in the IPWP region lead to enhanced eastward-propagating flux convergence in the northern high-latitude stratosphere, ultimately resulting in a diminishing ASPV. With increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas, the ASPV is poised to further weaken in the future, particularly in the context of a more intense IPWP. Our finding has significant implications for early winter ASPV strength and location prediction and seasonal weather forecasting.

Interannual Variability of the Wintertime Asian–Bering–North American Teleconnection Linked to Eurasian Snow Cover and Maritime Continent Sea Surface Temperature

Abstract Recent studies propose that the Asian–Bering–North American (ABNA) teleconnection is a distinct atmospheric pattern that is related to Eurasian and North American winter climate besides the Pacific–North America (PNA) pattern, while its origin remains elusive. This study investigates the interannual variability of the ABNA during the past 42 winters (1979–2020) and the associated prior surface boundary forcings. The ABNA explains coherent surface air temperature changes in northern Asia, eastern Siberia–Alaska, and eastern North America, even after removing the impacts of the PNA, the Arctic Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and the North Pacific Oscillation. Surface boundary conditions linked to the ABNA could be traced back to a Eurasian snow cover dipole pattern (ESCDP) and a Maritime Continent sea surface temperature anomaly (MCSST) in November. The ESCDP leads to a displacement of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex via troposphere–stratosphere coupling. The anomalous polar vortex propagates downward in the following winter and generates the tropospheric ABNA pattern. The MCSST induces a diabatic heating anomaly, which is associated with a tropical western Pacific precipitation anomaly (TWPP) in winter. The TWPP excites a poleward Rossby wave train that propagates across the North Pacific and directly strengthens the ABNA. The above physical processes can be well reproduced by a linear baroclinic model (LBM). Based on the ESCDP and MCSST predictors, an empirical model is established and shows a promising prediction skill of the ABNA during the hindcast period. This can provide a useful strategy for seasonal prediction of winter climate in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Significance Statement Extreme cold events have influenced both Asian and North American continents during the past decades, causing huge socioeconomic impacts. The Asian–Bering–North American teleconnection is found to be responsible for coherent changes of winter climate in these two continents besides the Pacific–North America pattern. Our results indicate that Eurasian snow cover and the Maritime Continent sea surface temperature are important sources of predictability for the Asian–Bering–North American teleconnection, and can be used to predict coherent and cross-continent variations of winter surface air temperature. We propose that the Asian–Bering–North American teleconnection and these two predictors should be included in operational monitoring and prediction systems, helping to improve the prediction skill of winter climate in the Northern Hemisphere continents.

Impacts of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex changes on the frontogenesis over the northern middle latitudes during winter

The impacts of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) changes on wintertime frontogenesis in the northern middle latitudes are analyzed. Both composite analysis and model simulations reveal that the intensity and frequency of frontogenesis over West Russia, the Mongolian Plateau, the Mediterranean and the southern North Atlantic during weak SPV years are significantly stronger and larger than those during strong SPV years, while the frontogenesis over the northern parts of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans are weaker and less occur during weak SPV years. These features are more noticeable in middle January and February. The contributions of resultant deformation changes to frontogenesis intensity changes over most regions of the middle latitudes are larger than those of horizontal divergence changes, and the contribution of stretching deformation is slightly larger than that of shearing deformation. The changes in frontogenesis intensity are attributed to changes in the tropospheric circulation and temperature gradient associated with the SPV changes. Potential vorticity (PV) anomalies in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) caused by the weakened and shifted SPV towards Eurasia lead to tropospheric cyclonic flows, favoring more cold-air mass transported towards mid-latitude Eurasia. Meanwhile, more high-PV air towards Eurasia results in steeper tropospheric isentropes during weak SPV years. Consequently, both temperature gradient and frontogenesis over Russia are enhanced. More southward transport of cold-air mass due to the equatorward shift of the polar jet stream induced by the weak SPV enhances the frontogenesis over the southern North Atlantic. Furthermore, the angle between dilatation axis and the isentropes over West Russia, the Mongolian Plateau and the southern North Atlantic is more likely to occur between 0° and 45°, which promotes stronger frontogenesis over these regions during weak SPV years. By contrast, opposite processes occur over the northern North Atlantic, causing weaker frontogenesis there.

The Holton–Tan mechanism under stratospheric aerosol intervention

Abstract. The teleconnection between the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex, or the Holton–Tan (HT) relationship, may change in a warmer climate or one with stratospheric aerosol intervention (SAI) compared to the present-day climate (PDC). Our results from an Earth system model indicate that, under both global warming (based on RCP8.5 emission scenario) and SAI scenarios, the HT relationship weakens in early winter (November–December), although it is closer to PDC under SAI than under the RCP8.5 scenario. In contrast, the HT relationship in the middle to late winter period (January–February) does not change considerably in response to either RCP8.5 or SAI scenarios compared to PDC. While the weakening of the HT relationship under the RCP8.5 scenario is likely due to the weaker QBO wind amplitudes at the Equator, another physical mechanism must be responsible for the weaker HT relationship under SAI scenarios, since the amplitude of the QBO wind is comparable to the PDC. The strength of the polar vortex does not change under the RCP8.5 scenario compared to PDC, but it becomes stronger under SAI; we attribute the weakening of the HT relationship under SAI to a stronger polar vortex. In general, the changes in the HT relationship cannot be explained by changes to the critical line; the changes in the residual circulation (particularly due to the gravity wave contributions) are important in explaining the changes in the HT relationship under RCP8.5 and SAI scenarios.

Simulation of Northern Winter Stratospheric Polar Vortex Regimes in CESM2-WACCM

The possible impact of various Arctic polar vortex regimes for the stratosphere on the Northern Hemisphere extratropics has not been fully understood. Previous study has classified the stratospheric Arctic vortex to six regimes using the k-mean clustering algorithm based on the ERA5 reanalysis. The stability and robustness of the classification is further verified with a much longer model dataset and historical integrations from CESM2-WACCM. Consistent with the reanalysis, we clustered the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex forms into six patterns, named as homogeneously-intensified and -weakened regimes (HI, HW), North America-intensified and -weakened regimes (NAI, HAW), and Eurasia-intensified and -weakened regimes (EUI, EUW). A zonally uniform positive (negative) Northern Annular Mode (NAM) pattern develops during the HI (HW) regime from the stratosphere to troposphere. The NAM-like pattern shifts toward the western hemisphere with the largest negative (positive) anomalous height center shifting to North America during the NAI (NAW) regime. In contrast, the maximum polar anomaly center moves towards polar Eurasia during the EUI (EUW) regime. The HI, NAI, and EUW regimes are accompanied with weakened wave activities, while the HW, NAW, and EUI regimes are preceded by enhanced planetary waves. Accordingly, persistent anomalies of warmth (coldness) exist over midlatitude Eurasia and North America during the HI (HW). Anomalous warmth (coldness) centers exist in northern Eurasia, while anomalous coldness (warmth) centers exist around the Mediterranean Sea during the NAI (NAW) regime. Anomalous warmth (coldness) centers develop in East Asia in the EUI (EUW) periods. The rainfall anomaly distributions also vary with the stratospheric polar vortex regime. The frequency for stratospheric regimes during SSWs and strong vortex events is also assessed and consistent with previous findings.

Stratospheric downward wave reflection events modulate North American weather regimes and cold spells

Abstract. The Arctic stratospheric polar vortex is an important driver of mid-latitude winter cold spells. One proposed coupling mechanism between the stratospheric polar vortex and the troposphere is upward-propagating planetary waves being reflected downward by the polar vortex. However, while the wave reflection mechanism is well-documented, its role in favouring cold spells is still under-explored. Here, we analyse such stratospheric wave reflections and their impact on the tropospheric circulation and surface temperatures over North America in winter. We present a physically interpretable regional stratospheric wave reflection detection metric and identify the tropospheric circulation anomalies associated with prolonged periods of wave reflection, which we term reflection events. In particular, we characterise the tropospheric anomalies through the lens of North American weather regimes. Stratospheric reflection events show a systematic evolution from a Pacific Trough regime – associated on average with positive temperature anomalies and a near-complete absence of anomalously cold temperatures in North America – to an Alaskan Ridge regime, which favours low temperatures over much of the continent. The most striking feature of the stratospheric reflection events is thus a rapid, continental-scale decrease in temperatures. These emerge as continental-scale cold spells by the end of the reflection events. Stratospheric reflection events are thus highly relevant in a tropospheric predictability perspective.

Signatures of Anomalous Transport in the 2019/2020 Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex

AbstractThe exceptionally strong and long‐lived Arctic stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020 resulted in large transport anomalies throughout the fall‐winter‐spring period from vortex development to breakup. These anomalies are studied using Aura MLS N2O, H2O, and CO long‐lived trace gas data, ACE‐FTS CH4 data, and meteorological and trace gas fields from reanalyses. Anomalies are strongest throughout the winter in the lower through the middle stratosphere (from about 500K through 700K), with record low (high) departures from climatology in N2O and CH4 (H2O). CO shows extreme high anomalies in midwinter through spring down to about 550K. Descent rates, vortex confinement, and trace gas distributions in the preceding months indicate that early winter anomalies in N2O and H2O arose primarily from entrainment of air with already‐anomalous values into the vortex as it developed in fall 2019 followed by descent of those anomalies to lower levels within the vortex. Trace gas anomalies in midwinter through the late vortex breakup in spring 2020 arose primarily from inhibition of mixing between vortex and extravortex air because of the exceptionally strong and persistent vortex. Persistent strong N2O and H2O gradients across the vortex edge demonstrate that air within the vortex and its remnants remained very strongly confined through late April (mid‐May) in the middle (lower) stratosphere. These results are important for understanding the evolution of trace gas distributions, which affects both polar chemical processing and radiative processes related to climate.

Diverse Surface Signatures of Stratospheric Polar Vortex Anomalies

AbstractThe Arctic stratospheric polar vortex is an important driver of winter weather and climate variability and predictability in North America and Eurasia, with a downward influence that on average projects onto the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). While tropospheric circulation anomalies accompanying anomalous vortex states display substantial case‐by‐case variability, understanding the full diversity of the surface signatures requires larger sample sizes than those available from reanalyses. Here, we first show that a large ensemble of seasonal hindcasts realistically reproduces the observed average surface signatures for weak and strong vortex winters and produces sufficient spread for single ensemble members to be considered as alternative realizations. We then use the ensemble to analyze the diversity of surface signatures during weak and strong vortex winters. Over Eurasia, relatively few weak vortex winters are associated with large‐scale cold conditions, suggesting that the strength of the observed cold signature could be inflated due to insufficient sampling. For both weak and strong vortex winters, the canonical temperature pattern in Eurasia only clearly arises when North Atlantic sea surface temperatures are in phase with the NAO. Over North America, while the main driver of interannual winter temperature variability is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the stratosphere can modulate ENSO teleconnections, affecting temperature and circulation anomalies over North America and downstream. These findings confirm that anomalous vortex states are associated with a broad spectrum of surface climate anomalies on the seasonal scale, which may not be fully captured by the small observational sample size.

Modulation of Atmospheric Rivers by the Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex

AbstractVariability in atmospheric river (AR) frequency can drive hydrometeorological extremes with broad societal impacts. Mitigating the impacts of increased or decreased AR frequency requires forewarning weeks to months ahead. A key driver of Northern Hemisphere wintertime mid‐latitude subseasonal‐to‐seasonal climate variability is the stratospheric polar vortex. Here, we quantify AR frequency, landfall, genesis, and termination depending on the strength of the lower stratospheric polar vortex. We find large differences between weak and strong vortex states consistent with a latitudinal shift of the eddy‐driven jet, with the greatest differences over the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Iberia. Significant differences are also found for the Pacific Northwest of North America. Most of the seasonal‐scale stratospheric modulation of precipitation over Europe is explained by modulation of ARs. Our results provide potentially useful statistics for extended‐range prediction, and highlight the importance of ARs in bringing about the precipitation response to anomalous vortex states.

Evaluating Long-Term Variability of the Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex Simulated by CMIP6 Models

The Arctic stratospheric polar vortex is a key component of the climate system, which has significant impacts on surface temperatures in the mid-latitudes and polar regions. Therefore, understanding polar vortex variability is helpful for extended-range weather forecasting. The present study evaluates long-term changes in the position and strength of the polar vortex in the Arctic lower stratosphere during the winters from 1980/81 to 2013/14. Simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models are compared with Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA2) reanalysis dataset. Overall, the CMIP6 models well capture the spatial characteristics of the polar vortex with spatial correlation coefficients between the potential vorticity (PV) in the lower stratosphere from simulations and MERRA2 products generally greater than 0.85 for all CMIP6 models during winter. There is a good agreement in the position and shape of the polar vortex between the CMIP6 multi-model mean and MERRA2, although there exist differences between simulations of individual CMIP6 models. However, most CMIP6 models underestimate the strength of polar vortex in the lower stratosphere, with the largest negative bias up to about −20%. The present study further reveals that there is an anticorrelation between the polar vortex strength bias and area bias simulated by CMIP6 models. In addition, there is a positive correlation between the trend of EP-flux divergence for wavenumber one accumulated in early winter and the trend in zonal mean zonal wind averaged in late winter. As for the long-term change in polar vortex position, CanESM5, IPSL-CM5A2-INCA, UKESM1-0-LL, and IPSL-CM6A-LR well capture the persistent shift of polar vortex towards the Eurasian continent and away from North America in February, which has been reported in observations. These models reproduce the positive trend of wavenumber-1 planetary waves since the 1980s seen in the MERRA2 dataset. This suggests that realistic wave activity processes in CMIP6 models play a key role not only in the simulation of the strength of the stratospheric polar vortex but also in the simulation of the polar vortex position shift.

Introduction to Special Collection “The Exceptional Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex in 2019/2020: Causes and Consequences”

AbstractThis paper introduces the special collection in Geophysical Research Letters and Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres on the exceptional stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020. Papers in this collection show that the 2019/2020 stratospheric polar vortex was the strongest, most persistent, and coldest on record in the Arctic. The unprecedented Arctic chemical processing and ozone loss in spring 2020 have been studied using numerous satellite and ground‐based data sets and chemistry‐transport models. Quantitative estimates of chemical loss are broadly consistent among the studies and show profile loss of about the same magnitude as in the Arctic in 2011, but with most loss at lower altitudes; column loss was comparable to or larger than that in 2011. Several papers show evidence of dynamical coupling from the mesosphere down to the surface. Studies of tropospheric influence and impacts link the exceptionally strong vortex to reflection of upward propagating waves and show coupling to tropospheric anomalies, including extreme heat, precipitation, windstorms, and marine cold air outbreaks. Predictability of the exceptional stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020 and related predictability of surface conditions are explored. The exceptionally strong stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020 highlights the extreme interannual variability in the Arctic winter/spring stratosphere and the far‐reaching consequences of such extremes.

Changes in the Relationship between ENSO and the Winter Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex in Recent Decades

Abstract The impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the winter stratospheric polar vortex intensity (PVI) is re-examined, using JRA-55 datasets and the CESM2 model. Our results show that the negative correlation between ENSO and PVI has weakened in recent decades and is no longer statistically significant after the mid-1990s. This weakening ENSO–PVI relationship after the mid-1990s is associated with wave-1 fluxes entering the stratosphere; that is, the ENSO-induced increasing wave-1 fluxes are weaker after the mid-1990s than before the mid-1990s. Except for the Pacific–North America (PNA)-like wave train, the stratospheric wave flux changes are related to ENSO-induced geopotential height changes over East Asia. The ENSO-induced tropical zonal circulation anomalies are enhanced from the central Pacific to East Asia, leading to more substantial wave flux anomalies propagating westward from the central Pacific to East Asia and a more significant high center over Northeast Asia after the mid-1990s than before the mid-1990s. This ENSO-induced high center after the mid-1990s is out of phase with the climatological center of wave 1, leading to a relatively weaker increase in wave 1. Model results show that changes in the ENSO–PVI relationship and ENSO–Asia circulation are associated with changes in ENSO-related SST combined with global mean SST. Significance Statement In this study, changes in the ENSO–polar vortex relationship and the relevant mechanisms are analyzed from the perspective of the ENSO-induced East Asia circulation. The results can help us better understand and predict variations in the stratospheric polar vortex.

Stratospheric Mountain Waves Trailing across Northern Europe

AbstractPlanetary waves disturbed the hitherto stable Arctic stratospheric polar vortex in the middle of January 2016 in such a way that unique tropospheric and stratospheric flow conditions for vertically and horizontally propagating mountain waves developed. Coexisting strong low-level westerly winds across almost all European mountain ranges plus the almost zonally aligned polar-front jet created these favorable conditions for deeply propagating gravity waves. Furthermore, the northward displacement of the polar night jet resulted in a widespread coverage of stratospheric mountain waves trailing across Northern Europe. This paper describes the particular meteorological setting by analyzing the tropospheric and stratospheric flows based on the ERA5 data. The potential of the flow for exciting internal gravity waves from nonorographic sources is evaluated across all altitudes by considering various indices to indicate flow imbalances as δ, Ro, Roζ, Ro⊥, and ΔNBE. The analyzed gravity waves are described and characterized. The main finding of this case study is the exceptionally vast extension of the mountain waves trailing to high latitudes originating from the flow across the mountainous sources that are located at about 45°N. The magnitudes of the simulated stratospheric temperature perturbations attain values larger than 10 K and are comparable to values as documented by recent case studies of large-amplitude mountain waves over South America. The zonal means of the resolved and parameterized stratospheric wave drag during the mountain wave event peak at −4.5 and −32.2 m s−1 day−1, respectively.

Northern hemisphere cold air outbreaks are more likely to be severe during weak polar vortex conditions

Severe cold air outbreaks have significant impacts on human health, energy use, agriculture, and transportation. Anomalous behavior of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex provides an important source of subseasonal-to-seasonal predictability of Northern Hemisphere cold air outbreaks. Here, through reanalysis data for the period 1958–2019 and climate model simulations for preindustrial conditions, we show that weak stratospheric polar vortex conditions increase the risk of severe cold air outbreaks in mid-latitude East Asia by 100%, in contrast to only 40% for moderate cold air outbreaks. Such a disproportionate increase is also found in Europe, with an elevated risk persisting more than three weeks. By analysing the stream of polar cold air mass, we show that the polar vortex affects severe cold air outbreaks by modifying the inter-hemispheric transport of cold air mass. Using a novel method to assess Granger causality, we show that the polar vortex provides predictive information regarding severe cold air outbreaks over multiple regions in the Northern Hemisphere, which may help with mitigating their impact.

The January 2021 sudden stratospheric warming

On 5 January 2021, the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex dramatically weakened, and the temperature of the Arctic stratosphere rapidly increased in an event known as a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). It is likely that this SSW influenced surface weather conditions for over a month afterward.

The exceptionally strong and persistent Arctic stratospheric polar vortex in the winter of 2019–2020: 2019-2020冬季北半球超强极涡事件

The Arctic stratospheric polar vortex was exceptional strong, cold and persistent in the winter and spring of 2019–2020. Based on reanalysis data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research and ozone observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument, the authors investigated the dynamical variation of the stratospheric polar vortex during winter 2019–2020 and its influence on surface weather and ozone depletion. This strong stratospheric polar vortex was affected by the less active upward propagation of planetary waves. The seasonal transition of the stratosphere during the stratospheric final warming event in spring 2020 occurred late due to the persistence of the polar vortex. A positive Northern Annular Mode index propagated from the stratosphere to the surface, where it was consistent with the Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation indices. As a result, the surface temperature in Eurasia and North America was generally warmer than the climatology. In some places of Eurasia, the surface temperature was about 10 K warmer during the period from January to February 2020. The most serious Arctic ozone depletion since 2004 has been observed since February 2020. INVESTIGATION OF WINTER ARCTIC STRATOSPHERIC DYNAMICS IN PRESENT AND FUTURE CLIMATE

Using reanalysis data sets variability of temperature, zonal mean, amplitude-planetary waves, as well as the influence of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex changes on the circulation of troposphere from 2016 to 2021 are studied. The results of calculations of the climate model of the INM RAS CM5 for the current and future climate are used to analyze changes in the volume of air masses inside the stratospheric polar vortex with temperatures sufficient for the formation of polar stratospheric clouds necessary for the destruction of the ozone layer.

The Remarkably Strong Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex of Winter 2020: Links to Record‐Breaking Arctic Oscillation and Ozone Loss

AbstractThe Northern Hemisphere (NH) polar winter stratosphere of 2019/2020 featured an exceptionally strong and cold stratospheric polar vortex. Wave activity from the troposphere during December–February was unusually low, which allowed the polar vortex to remain relatively undisturbed. Several transient wave pulses nonetheless served to help create a reflective configuration of the stratospheric circulation by disturbing the vortex in the upper stratosphere. Subsequently, multiple downward wave coupling events took place, which aided in dynamically cooling and strengthening the polar vortex. The persistent strength of the stratospheric polar vortex was accompanied by an unprecedentedly positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation in the troposphere during January–March, which was consistent with large portions of observed surface temperature and precipitation anomalies during the season. Similarly, conditions within the strong polar vortex were ripe for allowing substantial ozone loss: The undisturbed vortex was a strong transport barrier, and temperatures were low enough to form polar stratospheric clouds for over 4 months into late March. Total column ozone amounts in the NH polar cap decreased and were the lowest ever observed in the February–April period. The unique confluence of conditions and multiple broken records makes the 2019/2020 winter and early spring a particularly extreme example of two‐way coupling between the troposphere and stratosphere.
