Polar Institutions throughout the World

The folowing notes on the work of the Arctic Institute at Leningrad have been received from Professor R. Samoilovitch.The size of the territory of the northern part of the U.S.S.R., the different characteristics of its natural wealth, its climatic peculiarities, its economic usages, the difficult approach of many of its districts, and, finally, the almost complete absence of means of communication, together with the specific navigation conditions of the waters that wash it—all these involve the use of special methods for studying the European and Asiatic parts of the Soviet Arctic.

Plan for Exploring Soviet Far North in 1934

AT a recent session of the Scientific Council of the All-Union Arctic Institute, plans were adopted for expeditions to the far north during this year. The plans include extensive exploration of the great northern sea route. The Moscow Daily News reports that particular attention is to be paid to the little-known Laptev and Eastern Siberian seas. Geological expeditions will aim at creating a fuel base for ships navigating the great northern sea route and at discovering ores of non-ferrous and rare metals. Their attention will therefore be concentrated on Novaya Zemlya, the eastern part of the Chukotsk peninsula and Northern Land, where indications of oil, coal and ores have been found. Geodetic expeditions with an aeroplane at their disposal will carry out preparatory work for compiling the first 1: 1,000,000 map of the Soviet Arctic, to be published in 1937. Five new permanent research stations will be added to the existing twenty, and a new laboratory for the study of magnetic phenomena will be erected near the estuary of the Kolyma. Attention is to be paid to the study of reindeer and polar dog breeding. Special breeding farms are to be organised in order to facilitate communication between the stations along the northern sea route.

Relics of the Barents Expedition

IT is reported in the Moscow Daily News that an expedition, organised by the Arctic Institute of the U.S.S.R. which has recently returned to Leningrad, has discovered relics of the Barents expedition which perished in 1597. William Barents was a Dutch navigator born about the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1594 he left Amsterdam with two ships to search for a north-east passage to eastern Asia, but failed. He commanded another expedition of seven ships in the following year, but was too late to find open water. His third journey resulted in catastrophe. After rounding the north of Novaya Zemlya in 1596, Barent's vessel was beset by ice and compelled to winter in the north. It was the first winter ever experienced by Europeans in polar regions. Barent's ship was not released until 1597. His party left in two open boats on June 13, and most of its members escaped. Barents himself died on June 30, 1597, with four members of his crew. The expedition of the Arctic Institute of the U.S.S.R. discovered on August 18 last some relics of the hut in which Barents wintered on the north-east extremity of Cape Spora Novolsk. These relics will be preserved in the Museum of the Arctic Institute in Leningrad.

New Islands in the Arctic

THE Society for Cultural Relations has issued a report stating that a new group of islands has been discovered in the arctic by the expedition aboard the icebreaker Sibiryak. The news was conveyed by a radiogram from Prof. Wiese, head of the expedition, to the Arctic Institute in Leningrad. The islands lie to the south-west of the Izvestia, a group of islands south-west of Solitude Island discovered last year by the icebreaker Rusanov.
