WebGIS Implementation and Effectiveness in Secondary Education Using the Digital Atlas for Schools

The Digital Atlas for Schools is an innovative WebGIS development contributing to the use of geospatial information in schools. Based on a story map tool, it creates a geography curriculum constructed on ArcGIS Online. This article discusses the implications of implementing geospatial technologies so that learners can acquire spatial thinking and geographical knowledge, but also develop responsible and active spatial citizenship. Based on the learning progression approach, it presents results showing the effectiveness of this instructional resource, both for secondary school students and for geography teachers in training. The article concludes with a discussion on how results confirm the need for geospatial technologies to be better incorporated into the geography curriculum at secondary schools.

Геоинформационное картографирование для решения эколого-просветительских задач: интерактивная карта растительности «Тропою Доппельмаира»

Environmental education is an important function of Protected Areas among them nature reserves. It includes development of visible and available materials on tours and routes, on geographical and environmental features of a territory, and on unique species of flora and fauna. Interactive map of vegetation “Along Doppelmair’s trail” is an example of scientific information visualization. It was made for a distant and restricted core area in Barguzinsky Nature Reserve. We applied traditional geographical approaches and methods (field research, geobotanical descriptions) and modern GIS technologies (creation of unit database on landscape foundation, satellite image interpretation, infogram visualization) to create the map. As a result a GIS product is created with ArcMAP and located on the ArcGIS Online platform. This map shows characteristic vegetation types, succession stages of pyrogenic dynamics of forest geosystems formed during a century period. Infograms demonstrate information on sites with wild animal encounters, vegetation distribution, landscape features, and photographical materials. This interactive map is a way for environment protection popularization and solving some educational tasks for Protected Areas. It gives an opportunity to study changes in vegetation from Lake Baikal shoreline to mountain peaks of Bаrguzinskii Range, learn typical flora and fauna species, including endangered ones, find interesting historical facts about the reserve, and, thus, get an idea of uniqueness and fragility of nature and the importance of protection attempts.

STORMTOOLS, Coastal Environmental Risk Index (CERI) Risk and Damage Assessment App

STORMTOOLS Coastal Environmental Risk Index (CERI) predicts the coastal flooding damage to individual structures using coastal flooding levels, including the effects of sea level rise (SLR), provided in terms of the base flood elevation (BFE), specifications of the structure of interest (type and first floor elevation) and the associated damage functions from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS). CERI has been applied to selected coastal communities in Rhode Island, including those in Narragansett Bay and along the southern Rhode Island shoreline. Users can access the results of CERI via ArcGIS online at the CERI website. The objective of this effort was to develop, test, distribute, and evaluate a mobile phone application (App) that allows the user to assess the risk from coastal flooding and the associated damage at the individual structure level using the CERI methodology. The App is publicly available and has been developed for both iOS and Android operating systems. Environmental data to support the App, in terms of 100 y flood BFE maps, including the effects of SLR and the selected site grade elevation, are provided in the application by the URI Environmental Data Center (EDC). The user enters the location and type of the structure of interest (residential number of stories, with or without basement, pile supported or commercial building and the first-floor elevation (FFE)) and the desired SLR. The App then calculates the percent structural damage based on the specified environmental conditions and structure specifications. The App can be applied to any structure at any coastal location within the state. The CERI App development project has been guided by an Advisory Board made up of key constituents involved in coastal management and development in the state. The effort included extensive testing of the App by various user groups. The App structure makes it simple and straightforward to transfer to coastal and inland flooded areas in other locations, requiring only the specification of BFEs and grade elevations.

Toward City Web Mapping in developing countries using satellite and stereo aerial imagery: A Case Study

Maps are graphic demonstrations of geographic information and a worldwide means of navigation. Digital maps, which are easily accessed via smartphones, are important in daily life. However, producing or updating maps and providing web data servers in developing countries are challenging due to limitations in resources. This research focuses on using free online ortho satellite imagery for producing digital maps and comparing it with those created from stereo aerial imagery via photogrammetry. The software ArcMap is used to produce maps from satellite imagery. The stereo imagery is processed using the photogrammetric solution Summit Evolution by ground control points collected from the site. Then, the spatial features are extracted from stereo aerial imagery. Subsequently, the attributes of both data sets are added to the objects, and the digital maps are uploaded to a web ArcGIS server by using an ArcGIS Online account. A case study is conducted on the College of Engineering campus at Salahaddin University-Erbil and its surroundings, which comprise different buildings and facilities. The result shows that the maps produced from stereo aerial imagery are more precise and accurate than those from satellite imagery because the features are photogrammetrically extracted with high resolution and stereo imagery.

Forward Support—Cloud Based Mosaic Imagery for Emergency Operations

The Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) has pursued the creation of One World Terrain (OWT), which aims to provide a set of 3D global terrain capabilities and services that can replicate the coverage and complexities of the operational environment. Research was conducted in support of One World Terrain through development of best practices for the delivery of a raster mosaic via cloud hosting service, created using OptimizeRasters Geoprocoessing Toolbox and the Mosaic Dataset Configuration Script. Though ultimately successful in developing the raster mosaic and hosting it online; JPEG compression lossiness was a key issue with the larger Rose Bowl dataset. Additionally, hosting the imagery via ArcGIS Online was found to increase the compressed file size; making it comparable to the original file size of the data. Future testing should consider usage of an enterprise server to avoid this issue. MRF_LERC compression was identified as the ideal file configuration; and ArcGIS Online was identified as a poor enterprise hosting medium. We have also identified a variety of ways to improve the MDCS script in order to automate the whole process more efficiently.

Analysis of Influence Settlement Density on the Fire Hazards Settlement at Cengkareng Subdistrict, West Jakarta

This study aims to determine the influence of settlement density on the fire hazard in the dense settlement area. This study location is in Cengkareng Subdistrict, West Jakarta. The population in this study was all the settlements or settlement blocks in the Cengkareng Subdistrict. This research uses the descriptive quantitative method, while data is collected using the Arc GIS Online satellite image. Technological advances in remote sensing and GIS can be used to analyze fire hazard settlements based on the variables that determined. The results showed that there was a significant influence of settlement density to increase the fire hazard in the settlement area. Therefore, the cooperation of society is still needed to participate in disaster mitigation to reduce the losses and needed to socialized to another institute in can be utilized in the planning of construction of the settlement fire response and providing fire extinguisher facilities.

TOOLS FOR SUSTAINABLE AND SMART LAND USE: SLOVENIAN APPROACH FOR LAND REGENERATION SUPPORT

Functionally degraded areas (FDAs) refer to not fully utilized or abandoned land with visible effects of previous use, and of lower utility value. Such areas may have potential for new development and ecological enhancement. In Slovenia, the first database of FDAs was created in 2017, where we developed a completely new spatial data layer in addition to the typology of FDAs and a methodological approach for systematic monitoring. In 2020, we updated the database in collaboration with spatial planners from all 212 Slovenian municipalities. To enable collaboration and to monitor changes in FDAs, we developed a custom application using the ArcGIS Online platform. The presented tools, a new database and an online application, can play an important role in the process of planning and decision making at different spatial levels. They could stop the expansion of built-up areas, contribute to more rational land use according to the principle of "no net land take", support the transition to a carbon-free society and enable active regeneration of degraded areas.

The methodology for developing a web version of the Electronic Ecological Atlas of the Sea of Azov is based on the use of “cloud” technology of the geoportal — an open platform that is completely built on world industry standards and supports various types of data and services. In 2019, the static part of the Ecological Atlas of the Sea of Azov (Atlas) was completed and posted on the organization’s website, based on the use of standard website creation methods. The objective of the study is to expand the standard means of presenting Atlas data by introducing interactive web applications into it. Web applications are developed on the ArcGis Online platform using Esri standards. As part of the development of the dynamic part of the Atlas, two interactive web applications were created: “Ecological study of the seas of the south of Russia” and “Water Protection Zone of the Sea of Azov”. The application “Ecological study of the seas of the south of Russia” includes thematic maps built on the basis of interactive queries, including maps of the distribution of observation stations by year, by executors and type of observation, as well as infographics and data tables. The web application allows you to create maps that clearly show the results of field research and measurements in the Azov Sea region, as well as allow visual analysis of data from different years, add your own tabular relationships. The purpose of the application developed “Water protection zone of the Azov Sea” is the empowerment of the Atlas through the introduction of interactive web applications tightly themed. One of the objectives is to assess the impact of economic activity on the coastal zone of the Sea of Azov within the water protection zone.

Geovisual Analytics of Spatio-Temporal Earthquake Data in Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the nations located in the Ring of Fire. Indonesia has a high level of geodynamic activities so that it's often earthquake tectonics. The earthquakes are caused by Indonesia position located in the confluence of four main plates. At present, the history of earthquake data in Indonesia has been accessible by the public. However, general visualization which can present history earthquake in the form maps and summary statistics have not been available. Therefore, this research aims to visualize the history of earthquake data interactively combining spatial data and temporal data. The data used for this research was obtained from BMKG website. The data variables used in this research include CORS stations and history of earthquake phenomenons between 2004 and 2019. The earthquake phenomenon consists of occurrence time, coordinate position, depth and magnitude. The data are processed using Ms Excel and ArcGIS Online Map then are visualized by Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS. The results of the data processing are maps presented in a dashboard with time-series animation and widgets features. We performed maps, graphics and time-series animation as interactive visual interfaces and matched the tasks to visual analytics techniques that are capable to support them. In this paper, we introduce the relationship between variables and present the visual analytics techniques using several example scenarios of Spatio-temporal earthquake data.

Channelling participation into useful representation: combining digital survey app and collaborative mapping for national slum-upgrading programme

Upgrading slum settlements has been a priority for President Joko Widodo since he took office in 2014. The government’s national slum-upgrading programme, announced in 2015, aims to provide access to clean water, sanitation, and better housing in at least 38,000 ha of slums across Indonesian cities. Data collection for this project currently involves using paper forms to complete neighbourhood and household surveys in slums to develop baseline data. Aside from the laborious processing involved, paper-based survey data also lack positional accuracy and comprehensive information and cannot be integrated with community and government data. Ineffective data collection and mapping hinders the optimum use of slum baseline data. Improving data accuracy and tool usability is essential for effective and efficient programme implementation. This research utilised a digital survey app known as ODK and collaborative mapping to validate the results of surveys in the slums in Yogyakarta, Palu, and Malang. Field survey results were plotted into the following three different mapping platforms: a combination of Google Fusion Tables and Google Maps API for Yogyakarta, storytelling maps with ArcGIS Online for Palu, and OpenLayers API for Malang. Usability interviews revealed that community facilitators agreed on the effectiveness, efficiency, learnability, and utility of the digital survey app and the corresponding online map. The combination of field validation with ODK and collaborative mapping enables usable data flow to support the national slum-upgrading project.

Responsive Geographical Information Systems for Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Mobile Networks in Barcelona

Structured Abstract Objective This paper proposes a methodology for using mobile telephone network coverage data from the Mobile Coverage (GenCat) platform for detecting spatial and temporal patterns in multiple scales and at different geographical granularity levels (administrative and Urban Atlas classes). The paper outlines a Responsive Geographical Information Systems (“Responsive Mobile Coverage (RMC)”) of a large number of point data of mobile networks integrating summarization techniques and dynamic visual models. Methodology For that purpose, an integrated framework of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and GIS Cloud Computing is described and implemented using open source tools such as Jupyter (Python), ArcGIS Online and the ESRI Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS. The methodology was tested with data of Barcelona in August 2015. Conclusions The RMC framework presents capabilities to integrate additional information from the Catalonian Big Data landscape, and therefore, improve the access to Open data for public sector, private companies, citizens and scientists. The developed methods have potential for the definition and analysis of the distribution of aggregation indicators in cities, monitoring the precision of mobile networks in different administrative and urban contexts, and enabling citizens to make sense of such data for improving their scientific knowledge, daily life and fostering collective decision making. Geodatabase in the Management of Local Government (A Case Study of Road Network in Part of Shomolu Local Government)

The aim of this study is to develop a Geodatabase in managing road network for part of Shomolu Local Government Area. In order to achieve the aim and objectives of this research, Satellite images, road network map, road network information, picture of; road, roundabout and their coordinates were obtained using Handheld GPS. The road network was mapped using the satellite imagery. File geodatabase was created in ArcCatalog. The road network documents served as an inventory for the database which was finally created using ArcGIS 10.3.1. Query analysis was carried out on the results. Analysis such as road density and connectivity level were carried out. The zipped shapefiles were exported to ArcGIS Online to finally create a web map. The study revealed that the only federal road observed was Ikorodu Road which is the longest in terms of Road length. It also reveal that 63.8% of the roads were tarred while only 14.2% were untarred, the untarred roads were mostly road that serves as close, lane and avenue. It was observes that majority of the roads were inner street and are maintained by the Local Government. Also, there were few main roads characterized by single lane. The study also reveals moderate connectivity level of the road network and also the value of 11km-1shows the high density of roads in the study area. The study reveals the capability of GIS-database to maintain, map, monitor and manage both spatial and non-spatial data. It is therefore, recommended that government should establish GIS unit in the federal and state ministry of transport board and also encourage the local government areas to do the same for proper planning, development and management of road transport infrastructure.

Cloud ArcGIS Online as an innovative tool for developing geoinformation competence with future geography teachers

The article dwells upon the scientifically relevant problem of using cloud-based GIS-technologies when training future geography teachers (based on ArcGIS Online application). The authors outline the basic principles for implementing ArcGIS Online in the educational process (interdisciplinary integration, the sequence of individualization in training, communicability, distance education and regional studies), and provide an example of an interactive map created with the help of the specified cloud GIS, since this kind of map is the most popular a form of research by geography students. In the article it is noted that integration of ArcGIS Online into the educational process allows the teacher to follow a clear pedagogical strategy, taking into account possible variants of its use (demonstration, direct mastering of GIS in a computer class and independent work in an individual mode). Considering cloud GIS as a new stage in the development of geoinformational education, the authors emphasize their key benefits (round-the-clock access, work with GIS package in the cloud, the ability to use other maps as well as the creation of their own maps and web-applications) and disadvantages (monetization of services, underestimation of the GIS role in the curriculum of the higher school, the lack of Ukrainian content, etc.).

Development of a geospatial approach for the quantitative analysis of trauma center access.

Decisions around trauma center (TC) designation have become contentious in many areas. There is no consensus regarding the ideal number and location of TC and no accepted metrics to assess the effect of changes in system structure. We aimed to develop metrics of TC access, using publicly available data and analytic tools. We hypothesize that geospatial analysis can provide a reproducible approach to quantitatively asses potential changes in trauma system structure. A region in New York State was chosen for evaluation. Geospatial data and analytic tools in ArcGIS Online were used. Transport time polygons were created around TC, and the population covered was estimated by summing the census tracts within these polygons. Transport time from each census tract to the nearest TC was calculated. The baseline model includes the single designated TC. Model 1 includes one additional TC, and Model 2 includes two additional TC, chosen to maximize coverage. The population covered, population-weighted distribution of transport times, and population covered by a specific TC were calculated for each model. The baseline model covered 1.12 × 10 people. The median transport time was 19.2 minutes. In Model 1, the population covered increased by 14.4%, while the population catchment, and thus the estimated trauma volume, of the existing TC decreased by 12%. Median transport time to the nearest TC increased to 20.4 minutes. Model 2 increased coverage by 18% above baseline, while the catchment, and thus the estimated trauma volume, of the existing TC decreased by 22%. Median transport time to the nearest TC decreased to 19.6 minutes. Geospatial analysis can provide objective measures of population access to trauma care. The analysis can be performed using different numbers and locations of TC, allowing direct comparison of changes in coverage and impact on existing centers. This type of data is essential for guiding difficult decisions regarding trauma system design. Care management, level IV.

Development of High Resolution Wetland Database and Web Interface in the Ernakulam and Thrissur Districts in Kerala, India

Wetlands are under severe threat from reclamation, water diversion, pollution, resource overuse, biological invasion and climate change worldwide especially in fast growing economies. The present study focuses on identifying and mapping the extent of wetlands in two rapidly developing districts in Kerala (i.e., Ernakulam and Thrissur) using high-resolution satellite imageries available at free of cost through base maps distribution services of GIS softwares. Mapping was carried out at 1: 5, 000 scale using visual interpretation technique. The web interface was developed using ArcGIS online and Open Layer plugins. The study found that the spatial extent of total wetlands in Ernakulam and Thrissur Districts is about 74, 060 ha. The paddy fields are found to be the dominant wetland type in the districts covering an area of 40, 965 ha. The other wetland types include River systems 15, 799 ha, Aqua culture 6, 038 ha, Reservoir 5, 799 ha, Marshy land 4, 332 ha and other water bodies 1, 417 ha. The extent of wetlands was also determined at various administrative levels, i.e., District, Taluk and Panchayat wise. This study developed a wetland web map with the help of ArcGIS Online that supports the decision makers in the effective management of wetlands in the Ernakulam and Thrissur districts.

Zastosowanie systemów informacji geograficznej (GIS) w dydaktyce geograficznej przykład ćwiczeń terenowych „Geografia turyzmu i hotelarstwa”

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości zastosowania Systemów Informacji Geograficznej (GIS) dla celów dydaktycznych na kierunku Turystyka i Rekreacja na przykładzie ćwiczeń terenowych „Geografia turyzmu i hotelarstwa”. Zasięg przestrzenny badań terenowych, prowadzonych w ramach ćwiczeń, obejmował obszar sołectwa Spała. Podczas ćwiczeń zastosowano dwie przestrzenne metody określenia funkcji turystycznej: zdjęcie użytkowania ziemi oraz bonitację punktową. Ćwiczenia zrealizowano z użyciem technologii i narzędzi GIS, w tym oprogramowania ArcGIS 10.4 (desktop) oraz umożliwiającego pracę w chmurze portalu ArcGIS Online. Przeprowadzone ćwiczenia pozwoliły na scharakteryzowanie funkcji turystycznej sołectwa Spała.

Using Machine Learning to Find Environmentally At-Risk Communities

Environmental health persists as a genuine concern in many US localities. However, public agencies often face limited capacity and resources to collect comprehensive environmental health data. Inspired by CalEnviroScreen, an environmental health assessment tool used to identify environmentally at-risk communities in California, I calculate pollution burden scores at the census tract level for the entire contiguous United States. Pollution burden is a composite score that encompasses 12 environmental (air, water, waste) indicators. I combine the actual pollution burden indicator data with predicted statistics using machine learning. I create an interactive, publicly accessible National Pollution Burden Map using ArcGIS Online. Although applied to US states, the same approach can also be applied to other regions of the world.

Development Gross Pollutant Management Strategies Knowledge Database using ArcGIS

This study aims to suggest an efficient method for the management of gross pollutants. The local data collected will finally become input to Innovative Gross Pollutant Management Strategies Knowledge Database, which will help engineers or local authorities to manage the GPTs efficiently. Furthermore, the knowledge management portal ensures knowledge sharing and the establishment of knowledge bank for Gross Pollutant under Malaysian condition. The developed gross pollutant management strategies knowledge database is able to assist the client during inspection & maintenance data collection using ArcGIS Collector. The data will be uploaded into the web base ARC GIS Online System, enable better management of gross pollutant traps, in term of inspection & maintenance. The result obtained in this study provides information that can help future decision for GPTs installation and maintenance program. Ultimately, the data obtained will assist the engineers and local authorities to implement appropriate strategies for trapping gross pollutants in an urban area, expand the sources for managing gross pollutants in order to rehabilitate the river system and preparing budget allocation for GPTs operation & maintenance.
