Raising the level of integrity as a task of national-patriotic education of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The purpose of this article is to characterize the enhancement of integrity as a task of national­patriotic education of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s military personnel. It is found that the Law of Ukraine «On Prevention of Corruption» does not explicitly define the category of integrity, despite its frequent mention. This oversight, coupled with the brevity of other relevant legal acts, has led to varying interpretations of the concept. As a result, numerous integrity codes present inconsistent and often arbitrary definitions of integrity. Given the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s primary constitutional function of defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the integrity of its personnel should be viewed as a matter of public interest rather than merely an internal military concern. This necessitates a unified understanding of integrity to prevent arbitrary interpretations by law enforcement agencies. Elevating integrity as a key component of national-patriotic education for Ukrainian military personnel requires a comprehensive approach. This involves implementing a range of organizational, legal, pedagogical, psychological, and other measures aimed at instilling in personnel a strong sense of duty to the nation, society, and the individual. This task is particularly challenging under martial law, as military units often consist of individuals with diverse values, motivations, and behavioral patterns. To address the issue of inconsistent interpretations, it is advisable to codify the concept of integrity in the Law of Ukraine «On Prevention of Corruption.» Additionally, the Code of Good Conduct and Professional Ethics for Military Officials, Civil Servants and Other Persons Authorized to Perform State Functions in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be amended to emphasize the societal dimension of integrity. Furthermore, the Law of Ukraine «On the Basic Principles of State Policy in the Sphere of Strengthening Ukrainian National and Civil Identity» should explicitly include integrity education as a crucial component of national-patriotic education.

Generation of algebraic data type values using evolutionary algorithms

Automatic data generation is a key component of automated software testing. Random generation of test input data can uncover some bugs in software, but its effectiveness decreases when those inputs must satisfy complex properties in order to be meaningful. In this work, we study an evolutionary approach to generate values that can be encoded as algebraic data types plus additional properties. First, the approach is illustrated with the generation of sorted lists. Then, we generalize the technique to arbitrary algebraic data type definitions. Finally, we consider the problem of constrained data types where the data must satisfy some nontrivial property, using the well-known example of red-black trees for our experiments. This example will allow us to introduce the main principles of evolutionary algorithms and how these principles can be applied to obtain valid, nontrivial samples of a given data structure. Our experiments have revealed that this evolutionary approach is able to improve diversity, and increase the size of valid generated values with respect to simple random sampling techniques.

Progestin-primed ovarian stimulation

The use of progestins for the prevention of premature ovulation during ovarian stimulation is called progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS). Response to ovarian stimulation with PPOS and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs seem to be similar with the clinically insignificant differences being explained by endocrine characteristics as expected. PPOS has the advantage of oral administration and lower medication cost than GnRH analogs, but the mandatory cancellation of an otherwise possible fresh embryo transfer can render PPOS less cost-effective if a fresh transfer would have been possible. Oocytes collected in PPOS cycles have similar developmental potential, including blastocyst euploidy rates. Frozen embryo transfer outcomes of PPOS and GnRH analog cycles seem similar both in terms of ongoing pregnancy/live birth rates and obstetric and perinatal outcomes. While some studies reported lower cumulative live birth rates with PPOS, they suffer from methodological issues, including arbitrary definitions of cumulative live birth rates. PPOS has been used in all patient types with consistent results and seems a patient-friendly and cost-effective choice when a fresh embryo transfer is not intended.

What is in a name: defining pediatric refractory ITP

AbstractThere are no agreed upon terminology to define “refractory” pediatric immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Guidelines are therefore limited to arbitrary and outdated definitions. The Pediatric ITP Consortium of North America held a meeting in 2023 to define this entity. With 100% agreement, the faculty established that pediatric ITP that is refractory to emergent therapy could be defined as no platelet response after treatment with all eligible emergent pharmacotherapies. With 100% agreement, the working group established that pediatric patients with ITP that continue to demonstrate high disease burden and/or no platelet response despite treatment with multiple classes of disease-modifying therapies represent a challenging subset of ITP. These patients are at higher risk of ongoing disease burden and merit additional investigation as well as consideration for clinical trials or novel therapies. Future efforts to define disease burden and disease response will be completed in collaboration with the ITP International Working Group.

Using high-density SNP data to unravel the origin of the Franches-Montagnes horse breed

BackgroundThe Franches-Montagnes (FM) is the last native horse breed of Switzerland, established at the end of the 19th century by cross-breeding local mares with Anglo-Norman stallions. We collected high-density SNP genotype data (Axiom™ 670 K Equine genotyping array) from 522 FM horses, including 44 old-type horses (OF), 514 European Warmblood horses (WB) from Sweden and Switzerland (including a stallion used for cross-breeding in 1990), 136 purebred Arabians (AR), 32 Shagya Arabians (SA), and 64 Thoroughbred (TB) horses, as introgressed WB stallions showed TB origin in their pedigrees. The aim of the study was to ascertain fine-scale population structures of the FM breed, including estimation of individual admixture levels and genomic inbreeding (FROH) by means of Runs of Homozygosity.ResultsTo assess fine-scale population structures within the FM breed, we applied a three-step approach, which combined admixture, genetic contribution, and FROH of individuals into a high-resolution network visualization. Based on this approach, we were able to demonstrate that population substructures, as detected by model-based clustering, can be either associated with a different genetic origin or with the progeny of most influential sires. Within the FM breed, admixed horses explained most of the genetic variance of the current breeding population, while OF horses only accounted for a small proportion of the variance. Furthermore, we illustrated that FM horses showed high TB admixture levels and we identified inconsistencies in the origin of FM horses descending from the Arabian stallion Doktryner. With the exception of WB, FM horses were less inbred compared to the other breeds. However, the relatively few but long ROH segments suggested diversity loss in both FM subpopulations. Genes located in FM- and OF-specific ROH islands had known functions involved in conformation and behaviour, two traits that are highly valued by breeders.ConclusionsThe FM remains the last native Swiss breed, clearly distinguishable from other historically introgressed breeds, but it suffered bottlenecks due to intensive selection of stallions, restrictive mating choices based on arbitrary definitions of pure breeding, and selection of rare coat colours. To preserve the genetic diversity of FM horses, future conservation managements strategies should involve a well-balanced selection of stallions (e.g., by integrating OF stallions in the FM breeding population) and avoid selection for rare coat colours.

Business Management for Sustainability

The purpose of this paper is to address a fundamental flaw in prominent approaches to managing businesses for sustainability. Current management strategies fail to recognize the fundamental differences between economic, social, and moral or ethical values. Economic values are instrumental, individual, and impersonal. Social values are reciprocal, communal, and personal. Moral values are altruistic, spiritual, and universal. These are not arbitrary definitions but expressions of basic differences among the three types of value. These differences reveal the fundamental flaws in attempts to assign economic value or objectively quantify the social and ecological costs and benefits of economic enterprises. The transactional, social, and moral economies are defined in ways that avoid compromising the differences in values. In addition, a natural hierarchy exists among nature, society, and economy that requires a corresponding hierarchy of moral, social, and economic values in managing sustainable organizations. The strategies, motives, and metrics that have dominated sustainable business management for the past several decades, and the related research and educational programs that support them, fail to reflect differences among economic, social, and moral values that are critical to sustainability.

On the selection of the coarsest size class in flotation rate characterizations

This paper studies size-by-size batch flotation kinetics for the separation of Cu at particle sizes +75 μm, investigating the responses in the -150/+75 μm, -212/+150 μm, -300/+212 μm, -355/+300 μm and +355 μm size fractions. The kinetic results were analyzed to identify classes limited by the maximum achievable recovery or low flotation rates. Combinations of these classes were investigated, emulating the selection of the coarsest size in a kinetic study. The impact of compositing size classes was discussed, emphasizing implications in the identification of difficult-to-float components. The -212/+75 μm classes reached steady recoveries at long flotation times, whereas the -355/+212 μm classes presented sustained increasing recoveries at extended flotation times. Flotation rate distributions in the -212/+75 μm classes exhibited mound-shaped distributions, indicating low fractions of rate constants close to zero (R∞-limited case). Conversely, the -355/+212 μm classes presented reverse J-shaped distributions, with a high fraction of valuable minerals with flotation rates close to zero (rate-limited case). Combining several size classes in the definition of the coarsest size fraction in kinetic characterizations proved to hide the flotation patterns of the less massive constituents (+212 μm classes). The +75 μm and +150 μm cumulative retained classes trended towards steady recoveries, consistently leading to mounded flotation rate distributions. This study highlighted the need for reliable methodologies to select size fractions in kinetic characterizations, as their arbitrary definitions may lead to a misinterpretation of the mineral losses when compositing classes with different flotation responses.

THU078 The Definition And Epidemiology Of Giant Pituitary GH-Secreting Adenomas Based On Clinical, Imaging, And Hormonal Parameters: A Pilot Study

Abstract Disclosure: L.M. Del Corso: None. M.C. Silva: None. S.Z. Fidalski: None. C.L. Boguszewski: None. Acromegaly is a chronic disease, caused by a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma in most cases. At diagnosis, around 75% of patients have a macroadenoma, which constitute a heterogeneous group with variable biological behavior, therapeutic response, and prognosis. Giant adenomas (GA) have been defined as those which are more than 40 mm at their largest in diameter, but this is an arbitrary definition lacking comparative studies to investigate tumor size at diagnosis with clinical presentation, response to treatment and the evolution of acromegaly patients. Thus, the aim of our study was to compare the aforementioned variables according to the tumor size at diagnosis and review the diagnostic criteria for giant GH-secreting adenomas. In this observational, retrospective, single-centre pilot study, we have retrieved data from 161 medical records and evaluated age, sex, duration of symptoms, GH levels, presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension and hypopituitarism, imaging characteristics, and the need for adjuvant therapy with somatostatin receptor ligands (SRL) or other drugs. Study population was classified into four groups according to tumor size at diagnosis: (I) <10 mm (microadenomas; n=14); (II) 10-29 mm (n=84); (III) 30-39 mm (n=10); (IV) 40 mm or more (n=9). The final study group consisted of 117 individuals (49% men; mean age 43 ± 13 yrs). Hypopituitarism was significantly more frequent in groups III and IV compared to groups I and II (p=0.004), with no difference between groups III and IV (p=0,3). There was a higher proportion of invasive adenomas when the lesions ≥ 30 mm were compared to groups I and II (p=0.008), but with no difference between groups III and IV (p=0.62). Sixty percent of patients in group III (n=6) and 44% of patients in group IV (n=4) needed other drug therapy than SRL (cabergoline and/or pegvisomant), a higher proportion compared to those of groups I (n=1; 7%) and II (n=25; 30%) (p=0.04), again without difference between groups III and IV (p=0,7). Regarding the initial levels of GH, a significant difference was observed between groups I and IV (p=0.04), but this difference was not observed in the other groups. There were no statistical differences in relation to sex, duration of symptoms, need for SRL therapy, prevalence of hypertension and T2DM between study groups. Our study raises the hypothesis that giant adenomas should be defined as tumors larger than 30 mm, as the clinical behavior of tumors above this cutoff point seems to be similar in comparison with tumors larger than 40 mm but different from those of smaller sizes. How robust are particle physics predictions in asymptotic safety?

The framework of trans-Planckian asymptotic safety has been shown to generate phenomenological predictions in the Standard Model and in some of its simple new physics extensions. A heuristic approach is often adopted, which bypasses the functional renormalization group by relying on a parametric description of quantum gravity with universal coefficients that are eventually obtained from low-energy observations. Within this approach a few simplifying approximations are typically introduced, including the computation of matter renormalization group equations at 1 loop, an arbitrary definition of the position of the Planck scale at 10^{19},textrm{GeV}, and an instantaneous decoupling of gravitational interactions below the Planck scale. In this work we systematically investigate, both analytically and numerically, the impact of dropping each of those approximations on the predictions for certain particle physics scenarios. In particular we study two extensions of the Standard Model, the gauged B-L model and the leptoquark S_3 model, for which we determine a set of irrelevant gauge and Yukawa couplings. In each model, we present numerical and analytical estimates of the uncertainties associated with the predictions from asymptotic safety.

Utilizing Envelope Analysis of a Nasal Pressure Signal for Sleep Apnea Severity Estimation.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity assessment is based on manually scored respiratory events and their arbitrary definitions. Thus, we present an alternative method to objectively evaluate OSA severity independently of the manual scorings and scoring rules. A retrospective envelope analysis was conducted on 847 suspected OSA patients. Four parameters were calculated from the difference between the nasal pressure signal's upper and lower envelopes: average (AV), median (MD), standard deviation (SD), and coefficient of variation (CoV). We computed the parameters from the entirety of the recorded signals to perform binary classifications of patients using three different apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) thresholds (5-15-30). Additionally, the calculations were undertaken in 30-second epochs to estimate the ability of the parameters to detect manually scored respiratory events. Classification performances were assessed with areas under the curves (AUCs). As a result, the SD (AUCs ≥ 0.86) and CoV (AUCs ≥ 0.82) were the best classifiers for all AHI thresholds. Furthermore, non-OSA and severe OSA patients were separated well with SD (AUC = 0.97) and CoV (AUC = 0.95). Respiratory events within the epochs were identified moderately with MD (AUC = 0.76) and CoV (AUC = 0.82). In conclusion, envelope analysis is a promising alternative method by which to assess OSA severity without relying on manual scoring or the scoring rules of respiratory events.

Sample, Fuzzy and Distribution Entropies of Heart Rate Variability: What Do They Tell Us on Cardiovascular Complexity?

Distribution Entropy (DistEn) has been introduced as an alternative to Sample Entropy (SampEn) to assess the heart rate variability (HRV) on much shorter series without the arbitrary definition of distance thresholds. However, DistEn, considered a measure of cardiovascular complexity, differs substantially from SampEn or Fuzzy Entropy (FuzzyEn), both measures of HRV randomness. This work aims to compare DistEn, SampEn, and FuzzyEn analyzing postural changes (expected to modify the HRV randomness through a sympatho/vagal shift without affecting the cardiovascular complexity) and low-level spinal cord injuries (SCI, whose impaired integrative regulation may alter the system complexity without affecting the HRV spectrum). We recorded RR intervals in able-bodied (AB) and SCI participants in supine and sitting postures, evaluating DistEn, SampEn, and FuzzyEn over 512 beats. The significance of "case" (AB vs. SCI) and "posture" (supine vs. sitting) was assessed by longitudinal analysis. Multiscale DistEn (mDE), SampEn (mSE), and FuzzyEn (mFE) compared postures and cases at each scale between 2 and 20 beats. Unlike SampEn and FuzzyEn, DistEn is affected by the spinal lesion but not by the postural sympatho/vagal shift. The multiscale approach shows differences between AB and SCI sitting participants at the largest mFE scales and between postures in AB participants at the shortest mSE scales. Thus, our results support the hypothesis that DistEn measures cardiovascular complexity while SampEn/FuzzyEn measure HRV randomness, highlighting that together these methods integrate the information each of them provides.

Communication–Multimodal Image Correlation in Two-Dimensional Materials via Automated Image Processing by Strain and Doping Analysis

It is common to characterize a single sample using multiple different microscopy methods that have variable scales, rotation and translation. Registering hyperspectral images of 2D materials is particularly difficult due to the lack of keypoints on un-patterned substrates. The strain/doping maps can assist by creating these keypoints. Registration of these images allow for multimodal analysis from these various instruments by aligning multiple images into a single coordinate space. This is done by Hough transformations and arbitrary resolution definitions to generate a new coordinate frame where spatial information may be preserved and correlated on a pixel by pixel basis.

Phenology‐specific space use by Rio Grande wild turkeys

AbstractConservation of wildlife populations necessitates identifying patterns in space use because fitness requirements influence resource selection; however, details on how phenology affects space use are often only cursorily addressed during development of space‐ and resource‐use estimates. Moreover, space‐use assessments often aggregate distinct, phenology‐specific behaviors into generalized realizations of biological processes, such as reproduction. Therefore, to improve the relevance and accuracy of biological inferences for wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) space use at the population level, we defined 12 distinct phenology‐specific periods to compare and contrast variations in space‐use estimates. We calculated 1,568 individual space‐use estimates using dynamic Brownian Bridge movement models for Rio Grande wild turkeys (M. g. intermedia; n = 255 females) across Texas, USA, during 2012−2018. Females in each pre‐laying state used larger areas than during all other phenological states, suggestive of exploratory movements related to reproductive activities and resource acquisition. Incubation core areas were consistently <1.5 ha and incubation range sizes ranged from 10 ha to 48 ha. Core area and range sizes during the brooding period doubled from 15 days after hatch (3.1 ha and 42 ha) to 30 days after hatch (6.5 ha and 89 ha). Post‐breeding and wintering period ranges were >30% smaller than reproductive period ranges. Mean daily distance traveled was similar across phenological states except during incubation and brooding periods. Our results indicate that examining wild turkey space use at identifiable, phenology‐specific temporal scales will help mitigate against biases in estimates of resource selection based on arbitrary phenology definitions that aggregate data across multiple, distinct, phenological states.

Pediatric robot-assisted extravesical ureteral reimplantation (revur) in simple and complex ureter anatomy: Report of a multicenter experience

Robot-assisted extravesical ureteral reimplantation (REVUR) is a well established approach for surgical treatment of pediatric vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). However, further evidence is needed to confirm its efficacy even in case of complex anatomy. This study aimed to further confirm the evidence that REVUR is safe and effective in both simple and complex ureter anatomy. The charts of all patients with VUR, who received REVUR in 6 different institutions over a 5-year period, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with both simple and complex ureter anatomy were included. Patient demographics, surgical variables, and post-operative results were assessed. VUR resolution was defined as either being resolved VUR on voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) or clinically without symptoms during the follow-up. Fifty-seven patients with median age of 6.9 years (range 4.5-12), receiving REVUR in the study period, were included. Eighteen (31.6%) patients had complex anatomy and included prior failed endoscopic injection (n=13), complete ureteral duplication (n=2), periureteral diverticulum (n=2), ectopic megaureter requiring dismembering (n=1). The median operative time was 155min for unilateral and 211.5min for bilateral repairs. The clinical+radiographic VUR resolution rate was 96.5%. Post-operative complications (Clavien 2) included urinary retention following bilateral repair (n=5, 8.7%), febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) (n=6, 10.5%) and gross hematuria (n=3, 5.2%). Comparative analysis between simple and complex cases showed that REVUR was faster in simple cases in both unilateral [p=0.002] and bilateral repair [p=0.001] and post-operative urinary retention was more frequent in simple cases [p=0.004] and in patients with pre-operative bowel and bladder dysfunction (BBD) [p=0.001] (Table). This series confirmed that the robot-assisted technique was feasible even in cases with complex anatomy using some technical refinements, that justified the longer operative times in both unilateral and bilateral cases. An interesting finding of this study was the correlation emerged between BBD and risk of post-operative urinary retention and VUR persistence. Our results also excluded any significant correlation between complex cases and risk of post-operative urinary retention. The main study limitations included the retrospective and nonrandomized design, the small number of cases and the arbitrary definition of complex anatomy. REVUR was safe and effective for management of VUR in both simple and complex ureter anatomy. Complex REVUR required slightly longer operative times, without significant differences in post-operative mordidity and success rates. Aside from complex anatomy, BBD emerged as the main risk factor associated with surgical failure and post-operative morbidity.

Endonasal transsphenoidal surgery for planum sphenoidale versus tuberculum sellae meningiomas.

The aim of this study was to determine if the distinction between planum sphenoidale (PS) and tuberculum sellae (TS) meningiomas is clinically meaningful and impacts the results of the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA). A consecutive series of patients who were 18 years of age or older and underwent EEA for newly diagnosed grade I PS meningiomas (PSMs) and TS meningiomas (TSMs) between October 2007 and May 2021 were included. The PS and TS were distinguished by drawing a line passing through the center of the TS and perpendicular to the PS on postcontrast T1-weighted MRI. Probabilistic heatmaps were created to display the actual distribution of tumor volumes. Tumor volume, extent of resection (EOR), visual outcome, and complications were assessed. The 47 tumors were distributed in a smooth continuum. Using an arbitrary definition, 24 (51%) were PSMs and 23 (49%) were TSMs. The mean volume of PSMs was 5.6 cm3 compared with 4.5 cm3 for TSMs. Canal invasion was present in 87.5% of PSMs and 52% of TSMs. GTR was achieved in 38 (84%) of 45 cases in which it was the goal, slightly less frequently for PSMs (78%) compared with TSMs (91%), although the difference was not significant. Th mean EOR was 99% ± 2% for PSMs and 98% ± 11% for TSMs. Neither the suprasellar notch angle nor the percentage of tumor above the PS impacted the rate of GTR. After a median follow-up of 28.5 months (range 0.1-131 months), there were 2 (5%) recurrences after GTR (n = 38) both of which occurred in patients with PSMs. Forty-two (89%) patients presented with preoperative impaired vision. Postoperative vision was stable or improved in 96% of patients with PSMs and 91% of patients with TSMs. CSF leakage occurred in 4 (16.6%) patients with a PSM, which resolved with only lumbar drainage, and in 1 (4.3%) patient with a TSM, which required reoperation. PSM and TSMs arise in a smooth distribution, making the distinction arbitrary. Those classified as PSMs were larger and more likely to invade the optic canals. Surgical outcome for both locations was similar, slightly favoring TSMs. The arbitrary distinction between PSMs and TSMs is less useful at predicting outcome than the lateral extent of the tumor, regardless of the site of origin.

P-335 How to define recurrent implantation failure and when to start investigating the endometrium? Lessons from three years’ experience in a dedicated unit

Abstract Study question Should we always define recurrent implantation failure (RIF) after three unsuccessful transfers and only then start investigating the endometrium? Summary answer Endometrial investigations can be beneficial for patients with RIF. However, waiting for three previous failures before instituting assessment might not be appropriate in every situation. What is known already The definition of unexplained recurrent implantation failure (RIF) continues to be debated. This usually implies a lack of embryo implantation after the transfer of three good quality blastocysts on an apparently responsive and anatomically normal endometrium. To deal with this frustrating and distressing situation for both the patient and the clinician, additional empirical interventions are often blindly used. This approach may exacerbate rather than ameliorate any underlying aetiology. There is a need therefore to base interventions on diagnostic rationale wherever possible. Study design, size, duration In order to base advice and any interventions for RIF on diagnostic rationale, we created a referral unit dedicated to the investigation and treatment of patients meeting the traditional criteria for RIF. Over three years, 395 patients were referred to this unit and 237 completed their investigations. Here we present the clinical outcomes and insights obtained over these three years. Participants/materials, setting, methods Blood sampling for serum progesterone level and endometrial pipelle biopsy were performed after five days of luteal support in a standardised substituted cycle. The samples underwent dating by gene expression (ERA test) and immune assessment describing the recruitment and activation of the uterine Natural Killer cells (MLI test, Matrice Lab Innove). A personalised treatment plan was thus derived and suggested to the referring clinician. The outcomes after the subsequent personalised single embryo transfer were monitored. Main results and the role of chance The patients referred had an average of 4.3 previous good quality blastocysts transferred in the past. 58% of the referred patients had used their own eggs, including 49% after conventional IVF or ICSI, and 9% after using PGT-A. 42% of the referred patients had used donor eggs. To date, 237 patients completed their endometrial assessment. 92% of the tested patients revealed at least one disrupted endometrial marker. With the subsequent personalised single embryo transfer, an implantation rate of 58% was observed. The ongoing pregnancy rate at 12 weeks was reported at 39%. Limitations, reasons for caution While confirmatory prospective controlled studies are required, these data indicate that more targeted rather than blind usage of simple known therapeutics could be beneficial for patients experiencing RIF. The clinical context these referred was highly variable, including patients undergoing PGT-A and egg donation. Wider implications of the findings Given the higher implantation rates to be expected in some groups, waiting for at least three embryos to fail before investigating the endometrium may be inappropriate and underlie the relatively high miscarriage rate observed. Effective buoyancy and CAPE: Some implications for tropical cyclones

AbstractWe review the widely used concepts of “buoyancy” and “convective available potential energy” (CAPE) in relation to deep convection in tropical cyclones and discuss their limitations. A fact easily forgotten in applying these concepts is that the buoyancy force of an air parcel, as often defined, is non‐unique because it depends on the arbitrary definition of a reference density field. However, when calculating CAPE, the buoyancy of a lifted air parcel is related to the specific reference density field along a vertical column passing through that parcel. Both concepts can be generalized for a vortical flow and to slantwise ascent of a lifted air parcel in such a flow. In all cases, the air parcel is assumed to have infinitely small dimensions. In this article, we explore the consequences of generalizing buoyancy and CAPE for buoyant regions of finite size that perturb the pressure field in their immediate environment. Quantitative calculations of effective buoyancy, defined as the sum of the conventional buoyancy and the static vertical perturbation pressure gradient force induced by it, are shown for buoyant regions of finite width. For a judicious choice of reference density, the effective buoyancy per unit mass is essentially a unique force, independent of the reference density, but its distribution depends on the horizontal scale of the buoyant region. A corresponding concept of “effective CAPE” is introduced and its relevance to deep convection in tropical cyclones is discussed. The study is conceived as a first step to understanding the decreasing ability of inner‐core deep convection in tropical cyclones to ventilate the mass of air converging in the frictional boundary layer as the vortex matures and decays.

Whistleblowing: procedural and dogmatic problems in the implementation of directive (EU) 2019/1937

PurposeThis paper aims to enlighten the shortcomings of the EU Whistleblowing Directive 2019/1973, which could interfere negatively with its successful national implementation. In focus is the tension between companies potentially attempting to hide misconduct and disgruntled employees taking advantage of generous protection under the directive.Design/methodology/approachWith an extensive literary basis, this paper explores articles of the EU Whistleblowing Directive 2019/1973 under five areas of the so-called “weakness.” With view to Germany and Austria, the difficulty of implementing the directive is highlighted and likewise with view to Switzerland, a potential solution is presented.FindingsThe Whistleblowing Directive 2019/1973 overshoots its target by protecting whistleblowers without considering the wider public interest. There are specific points of arbitrary definition which demand resolution to ensure a successful national implementation.Originality/valueThis is a multifaceted discussion of a highly contentious ethical debate. Through an exploration of specific points of the Directive, it is possible to present why there are points of contention in the first place, and also the difficulty of implementing the principle of proportionality. The issue at the heart of the matter is balancing the protection of trade secrets with the fundamental necessity of whistleblowing as a means of last resort.

Assessing social structure: a data-driven approach to define associations between individuals

Our interpretation of animal social structures is inherently dependent on our ability to define association criteria that are biologically meaningful. However, association thresholds are often based upon generalized preconceptions of a species’ social behaviour, and the impact of using these arbitrary definitions has been largely overlooked. In this study we suggest a probability-based method for defining association thresholds using lagged identification rates on photographic records of identifiable individuals. This technique uses a simple model of emigration/immigration from photographable clusters to identify the time-dependent lag value between identifications of two individuals that corresponds to approximately 75% probability of being in close spatial proximity and likely associating. This lag value is then used as the threshold to define associations for social analyses. We applied the technique to a dataset of northern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the Northeast Pacific and tested its performance against two arbitrary thresholds. The probabilistic association maximized the variation in association strengths at different levels of the social structure, in line with known social patterns in this population. Furthermore, variability in inferred social structure metrics generated by different association criteria highlighted the consequential effect of choosing arbitrary thresholds. Data-driven association thresholds are a promising approach to study populations without the need to subjectively define associations in the field, especially in societies with prominent fission–fusion dynamics. This method is applicable to any dataset of sequential identifications where it can be assumed that associated individuals will tend to be identified in close proximity.
