This study includes some contemporary challenges for the Arab man, created by modern models such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity crimes, and digital evidence. The Arabic haiku: when two easts’ languages and literature meet

ABSTRACT Language is a system of signs and symbols that constitutes a tool for knowledge and communication because it is considered the most important means of understanding and contact between the members of the one society and other nations. The contact between nations and the exchange of literature and the borrowing of words happen through language contact. The present study aims at focusing on the linguistic and literature contact between the Japanese language and the Arabic language through investigating the impact of the Japanese haiku in the Arabic modern poetry. The study will include five Arabic haiku poems for six Arabic poets as a representative sample. The findings of the study show that the Arabic haiku poems follow the roles and the structures, the subjects that the Japanese haiku follows.

The Islamic Phenomenon in Modern Arab Countries

The modern Arab nation, usually referred to as a global society, is certainly different from the Arab nation during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The difference lies in following the geo-culture that it experiences to continue its existence in the arena of international competition. Modern Arabs have been compressed in ethnolinguistics that are far from being generally Muslim so that the facts that occur are still common among those who are not Muslims. In their religious understanding, the Modern Arab nation seems monolithic and is not dominated by certain doctrines to develop its teachings. So, it is commonplace to find among them various variants, both cultural, political and governmental, to strengthen their existence.

JAMAL ASSADI: A VOICE OF CULTURAL BELONGING IN MODERN ARAB POETRY

This article explores the poetry of Jamal Assadi, a prominent Palestinian poet whose works delve into themes of identity, displacement, and cultural belonging. Using a biographical approach, the study analyzes how Assadis personal experiences, particularly as a Palestinian Arab living in Israel, inform his poetic voice. By drawing on Assadis own words from interviews and his body of work, the article examines key poems to highlight his reflection on time, memory, and the socio-political struggles of the Arab world. Assadis use of both classical Arabic poetic forms and modern free verse techniques enriches the Arab literary tradition, blending the old with the new to address contemporary concerns.The critical method employed in this article focuses on the relationship between Assadis life and his literary creations, emphasizing how his poetry acts as a mirror of personal and collective experiences of exile and cultural fragmentation. Additionally, the article explores Assadis engagement with global literary traditions, showing how intertextuality plays a role in his political critique. Ultimately, this article affirms Assadis significant contribution to modern Arab literature, arguing that his poetry serves as both a continuation of classical Arabic traditions and a platform for innovation. By addressing themes of cultural resilience and political critique, Assadis work provides a nuanced and powerful voice within the broader landscape of Arab poetry, making it an essential subject of literary study.

Neo-patriarchal representations of “Pink” divorce in contemporary Egyptian TV dramas

ABSTRACT In this article, I have focused on a particular sampling of contemporary TV series with a common theme in which I point out the overoptimistic and oversimplified representation of one of the most critical challenges facing the modern Arab woman, which is divorce. I closely analyze the plots presented in these series, referring to the feminist social science literature developed by the feminist sociologists Valentine Moghadam and Deniz Kandiyoti, in relation to the concept of neo-patriarchy. This notion points to the coexistence of laws that encourage the academic and professional achievements of Arab women but fail to grant them adequate rights in relation to the family issues which include divorce, children's guardianship, and mixed marriage. Drawing on the framework of neo-patriarchy, I point out that these television shows attempt to destigmatize divorce by portraying that divorced women can have an extremely fulfilling life, disregarding the reality of the daily struggles and stigma many women face as a result of the unjust family laws. This study performs qualitative textual analysis on a sample of TV series that unrealistically deal with the theme of divorce, and thus fall into the category of entertainment media that foster the system of neo-patriarchy.

Al-Balāghah’s Legacy in Modern Secular Journalism

Abstract Contemporary studies have already explored al-Risālah magazine’s (1933–1953) dynamic role in championing a far-reaching secular-grounded educational mission— which was made more urgent by the encounter with Western innovations. Still, little attention has been paid to the journal’s strong linkages with Arabic classical heritage. This article argues that al-Risālah’s writings employed concepts and terminology related to al-balāghah, or eloquence, that were by turns accurate, controversial, and innovative. These uses enriched the spectrum of al-balāghah’s applicability also to the discussion of current preoccupations with other fields like psychology. While accounting for thought-provoking works like Tāhā Ḥusayn’s al-Bayān al-ʿarabī min al-Jāḥiẓ ilā ʿAbd al-Qāhir [The Arabic Bayān, from al-Jāḥiẓ to ʿAbd al-Qāhir, 1933,] Amīn al-Khūlī’s al-Balāghah wa-ʿilm al-nafs [al-Balāghah and Psychology, 1939,] and al-Zayyāt’s Difāʿun ʿan al-balāghah [In Defense of al-Balāghah, 1945] as pioneering studies towards the new conceptualizations of the discipline up to the mid-half of the twentieth-century, this study purports to trace the presence of al-balāghah in al-Risālah’s articles in both quantitative and qualitative terms through the employment of DH tools for data mining. By mapping the ontological shifts that occurred in traditional languages and concepts’ employment as both contrastive and continuous, the present inquiries showcase modern Arab culture’s dialectics of secularism and literary revisionism as self-sufficient, culturally embedded and integrated, and not as byproducts of contact with the West.

Nationalism and the Ottoman-Arab Dynamic: From Cultural Renaissance to Political Revolt

This paper delves into the intricate relationship between the Ottoman Empire and its Arab Muslim subjects amidst the backdrop of rising nationalist sentiments during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It traces the historical evolution of Arab nationalism, examining its cultural origins and political dimensions, while also dissecting the Ottoman administration's response to nationalist aspirations. Through an analysis of historical documents, scholarly works, and contemporary accounts, the study illuminates how nationalist movements reshaped the political, social, and cultural dynamics within the empire, leading to increased tensions between the central government and Arab nationalists. The paper highlights key events such as the Tanzimat reforms and the Young Turk Revolution, which exacerbated these tensions, culminating in the Arab Revolt of 1916 supported by the British. It also explores the impact of World War I on Ottoman-Arab relations and the subsequent dissolution of the empire, as reflected in treaties like the Treaty of Sèvres and the Treaty of Lausanne, which paved the way for the establishment of modern Arab states under European mandates. Through a comprehensive examination of historical sources and scholarly literature, the paper elucidates the multifaceted nature of nationalism's influence on the Ottoman Empire's relationship with its Arab Muslim subjects, underscoring its profound and enduring significance in shaping the modern Middle East.

This enhances the exploration of how poets skillfully employ sensory imagery to create beautifully crafted poems. The paper begins by providing a brief history of the poet, covering his early life, his pursuit of knowledge, and his literary contributions in both poetry and prose. It also examines the concept of sensory imagery according to modern Arabic language critics, shedding light on its functions and role in Arabic poetry. To explore the poet’s ability to use sensory imagery, the researcher adopts an analytical descriptive method. Finally, the paper concludes that sensory imagery often enriches the reader with hidden meanings, as the poet uses these elements as channels for creating vivid poetic imagery throughout the collection.

New Trends in Arabic Novels in the Current Era

This study explores the new trends in contemporary Arabic novels, analyzing the thematic and stylistic shifts that characterize modern Arabic literature. The research highlights several emerging trends, including the diversification of themes, stylistic innovation, cultural hybridity, and the integration of technology into narrative forms. The study discusses how modern Arabic novels have expanded beyond traditional topics like love and politics to include more complex issues such as identity, migration, gender, and the impact of globalization. Stylistically, there has been a move towards more experimental approaches, with authors adopting fragmented structures, multi-layered narratives, and blending of genres. The incorporation of cultural influences from the West and the East has also enriched the content of Arabic novels, reflecting the multicultural experiences of modern Arab writers. Additionally, the use of digital platforms and technologies in storytelling is reshaping the narrative landscape, offering new methods for engaging readers. Through an analytical lens, this study offers a comprehensive look at how Arabic novels are evolving to reflect contemporary societal changes and global cultural interactions.

Translation into Arabic A study of the negatives and positives

The research aims to shed light on the importance of translation in the Arab Renaissance and its development of the Arabic language in the modern era. Translation is considered one of the most important factors of the modern Arab Renaissance, which began at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The translation movement expanded in Egypt and the Levant in the late nineteenth century, to the point of Some historians believe that it was more active than the translation movement in those countries today. Translation contributed to the development of the Arabic language, as it enabled it to introduce modern terminology and the emergence of new literary genres in Arabic literature, etc.. Through the descriptive and analytical approach followed in the study, I concluded that the impact of translation on the Arabic language has two aspects: one positive and the other negative: the positive impact is represented by enriching Arabic with thousands of vocabulary in science, technology and arts through Arabization, and with very large numbers of vocabulary and expressions through translation, but translation began to negatively affect the nature of the Arabic language in terms of structure, derivation, and incision of new words. The importance of the research is due to mentioning the virtue of translation in enriching the Arabic language in various fields, studying the positives and negatives related to translation into the Arabic language, and clarifying the obstacles that stand before the translator during the translation process and how to deal with them. 2

Musthalah al-Tanash Nasyatuhu wa Ta’shiluhu wa Huduruhu fi al-Adab al-‘Arabi

A number of contemporary Arab critics have sought to root many Western critical concepts by searching for their origins in the ancient Arab and rhetorical heritage, including, for example, “intertextuality.” These critics agree that the ancient Arab critical heritage is full of critical theories and concepts, and it is necessary to return to it to uncover the origins of these modern Western theories and concepts, and to reintegrate them into modern criticism. The concept of intertextuality is one of the most Western concepts exposed to rooting in contemporary Arab criticism. This concept was rooted by linking it to old concepts created by Arab critics in the past, such as quotation, inclusion, literary theft, and others. Thus, Arab critics have enriched the human critical heritage with critical theories that they produced and applied to Arab poetic creativity. Arabs knew the idea of intertextuality in its concept, dimensions, and some of its functions, but they did not naturally create this Western term. Some modern Arab critics sought to purify the concept of intertextuality from its impurities that make it a dangerous concept, so that it could be rooted and considered a new and contemporary formulation of the concept of legalized thefts, which Abdul Qaher Al-Jurjani defined as "imitation".

This article presents a comprehensive historical overview of the lives of ancient and modern Arab societies, focusing on their nature, customs, and the changes that took place in various aspects of their lives. Through research into historical sources such as Gustave Le Bon's "Hadorotul Arab" and various relevant documentation, this article aims to provide a better understanding of the development of Arab civilization and the changes that occurred in Arab society over time. The review covers the social, economic, cultural and lifestyle aspects of Arab society in the past and present. The result of this study is that in ancient times, Arab societies were characterized by a relatively isolated and conservative nature. They lived in villages and tribes, with strong customs and traditional values. The social and economic aspects of ancient Arab society were influenced by their nomadic life and reliance on trade and livestock. However, as times changed, modern Arab society underwent a significant transformation. Arab cities became centers of economic and cultural activity, with increasingly open lifestyles and adaptation to outside influences. Social, economic and political changes have affected their daily lives, with changes in family structure, gender roles, education and employment. Modern Arab societies are also faced with challenges and changes due to globalization and modernization. They interact with new technologies and have greater access to information. Islam remains a strong cornerstone in the lives of Arab societies, with values such as modesty, justice and social care continuing to be upheld. However, religious interpretations and practices may vary among Arab societies, depending on the historical, cultural and environmental contexts in which they live .

Conjuring Sovereignty: How the “Constitution” of Medina became an Oracle of Modern Statehood

Although the legal institutions of postcolonial Egypt and much of the Arab world had been reconstituted along the lines of Napoleonic civil code in the 1940s, Islamic political discourse remained encumbered by claims in which the nation, the umma, was defined by faith rather than territorial boundaries, and lacked a notion of secular citizenship and sovereignty. South Asian scholar Hamidullah’s apologetic recasting of the Ṣaḥīfat al-Madīnā in the 1930s as the "world’s first written constitution" may have handed Egyptian Islamic reformists like the Islamic reformist and lawyer Salim El-Awa the solution to this problem. Wildly successful, El-Awa’s strategically ahistorical reading in Sadat’s Egypt pitted the purportedly liberal Prophetic politics against a constrictive juristic tradition. The resulting discourse made the Ṣaḥīfa available to anyone who wished to get past the structural incompatibility between Islamic politico-legal tradition and the territorially constituted nation-state. Besides disarticulating the relationship between Islamic law and politics, the Ṣaḥīfa may have performed another unintended function. As a treaty that placed no limits on a sovereign’s power, now elevated as the true Islamic constitution that had been obscured by later tradition, it became something of a modern oracle, providing the perfect instrument of legitimation to the modern Arab authoritarian states looking to deploy Islam but to bypass the tradition of Islamic jurisprudence.

The Potential and Limits of Arabic Digital Humanities

Culture is a nuanced term that is hard to define conclusively. It is largely used to refer to the totality of values, basic assumptions and life orientations, beliefs, policies, procedures, and codes of conduct. These are shared by a group of people and affect their behavior and the way they lead their lives. Cultural Analytics (CA), as a field, examines vast amounts of cultural data (books, images, newspapers, music, literature, etc.) to derive culturally relevant insights. Various methods and techniques (natural language processing, network analysis, visualization, and data mining) are applied to cultural components so that they are useful for research in the humanities. CA can help identify the behavioral components of human cultures and provide an accurate insight into the degree to which people conform to the current or target culture. It utilizes the corpora, metadata, and tools of text and image analysis to provide meaningful insights into the subject of research. This special issue explores how we can improve current performance in terms of understanding Arab cultural and social change and how we can implement behavioral changes or transformations more smoothly. The papers in this special issue use digitized printed texts, including books, journals, and printed ephemera to expand our knowledge of the key players in the printed world during a crucial period of modern Arab history. The combination of these sources will illuminate the intellectual trajectories of those who produced such texts and their transnational formal and informal networks.

The Perennial Solidarity of the East

Abstract While the intertwinement of Indian anti-colonial politics and Theosophy is well-known, the entanglement of esotericism and anti-colonial endeavors in the modern Arab world remains understudied. The article contributes to this area of research by demonstrating how certain strands of “Western” and “Eastern” esotericisms found resonance among early twentieth-century Arab intelligentsia and provided a useful global ideational backdrop for anti-colonial politics. Focusing on “Easternist” Egyptian intellectuals and their engagement with the French esotericist René Guénon, Theosophy, Sufism and Vedanta, the article shows how these esotericisms—and René Guénon’s in particular—provided valuable ammunition to the anti-colonial Easternist construction of a perennially united East. In doing so, the article proposes to nuance the existing interpretation of Guénon (living in Cairo from 1930) as “on the margins” of the Egyptian scene and, on a general level, to reevaluate the position of global esotericism in modern Arab thought.

Explicature in Translating Arabic Modern Fiction into English: Protraction and Interjection

This study aims at investigating ‘explicature’ as a quadruple norm in translating Arabic modern fiction into English on the basis of the translator’s visibility. It is to show how explicature focuses on the author’s background knowledge and appreciates the reader’s language peculiarities by means of language catalysts in parentheses (i.e. interpolations). Four levels of explicature were found out: literal, formal, usable and liberal. Protracting and interjecting the potential reader’s flow of attention, the translator’s interpolations were obligatorily filling-out or specifying, optionally text-building or aesthetic, pragmatically local or global and technically inherent or revelatory. They could be modified by either full insertion, direct replacement, reverse replacement or full deletion. As the two medial types (formal and usable) are the most notable, this quadruple model of explicature is intended to be a distinct norm in translating texts of fiction across such two completely different linguistic systems and cultural backgrounds as Arabic and English.

Irony and Parody: Humor as Counter Discourse in Kaouther Ben Hania’s film Le challat de Tunis

Abstract: The work of Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania is especially representative of a socio-politically engaged cinema that invites audiences to reflect on their history while advocating for positive change. Specifically, her award-winning 2015 film Le challat de Tunis is a mockumentary that uses irony and comic hyperbole to construct a subversive narrative that exposes the continued oppression of women’s sexual freedom at the hand of patriarchal ideology. Based on a 2003 real news story that reported several women having their buttocks slashed by a mysterious individual on a motorbike, the film weaves a metafictional account of the director’s quest for the real slasher (the challat ), using laughter as a lens through which Tunisian society is asked to examine itself. By casting the actual person accused of the crime as an actor, the process of mimetic representation is openly disavowed by the insertion of grotesquely comical fictional subplots. Ultimately, Ben Hania’s mockery of one and many potential challats should be read as a clear socio-political statement. The film forces (male) audiences to question the value of archaic practices (i.e. a woman’s virginity) in the modern Arab world. At the same time, by engaging in a dialogue with the women affected by the slashing, Ben Hania calls for a more just and gender equal future for Tunisia.

B a c k g r o u n d . It is emphasized that the study of the topic of religious tolerance in the Arab world and taking into account the experience of mutual understanding in societies with different cultures and religious beliefs is of great importance. The practice of harmony and religious goodwill between Ukrainians and Arabs is a relevant example for solving existing problems in these societies. M e t h o d s . It was noted that the appropriate methodology enables the formation of the correct worldview and contributes to the development of tolerance in the society of the specified countries. Emphasized. that in this context the main principle is the objective study and interpretation of religious concepts, laws, works and adequate translation of their content. The significance of the study of the historical, natural and climatic conditions of the emergence and evolution of Arab culture for its deep understanding, in particular the modern development of Arab society, is revealed. In this context, information about the ancestral homeland and ethnogenesis of the Arabs, as well as the interpretation of the name of this ethnic group, is important. R e s u l t s . The period of Arab history during which the said culture reached its highest level was determined, especially after the unification of the entire Arab society into a single state, as well as the initiation of a new calendar named "Hijras". It is noted that an important issue is also the situation of modern Arab society, the historical and geographical area of the spread of its culture. It is emphasized that religious tolerance is an important moral value necessary for the successful development of societies and ensuring peace in the modern globalized world. In this context, the study of the problem of tolerance in Arab society is of practical interest for religious studies, which studies various directions of religious teachings. C o n c l u s i o n s . It has been established that in order to solve existing problems related to the establishment of dialogue at the worldview level and the development of relations between the mentioned societies, knowledge of Ukrainian history, culture, language, philosophy, religion, in particular international relations, in the Arab society is necessary. It has been proven that this question is relevant for the correct understanding and establishment of communication and development of relations. In particular, it is about the need for Muslim Arabs to know religion, philosophy, culture, language, history and the importance of introducing Christianity in Ukraine-Russia. An important factor is that both mentioned religions are monotheistic, which makes it possible to improve mutual understanding between Ukrainians and Arabs at the worldview level.
