The effect of awe in wildlife tourists on animal-friendly behavioural intentions: a serial mediation model of connectedness to nature and empathy

ABSTRACT Wildlife tourism is experiencing rapid growth as people's desire to connect with nature intensifies, making the improvement of tourist behaviour in wildlife destinations a crucial research issue. In light of this, the current study, grounded in the appraisal theory of emotion, scrutinises how awe, connectedness to nature (CN), and empathy impact animal-friendly behavioural intentions (AFBI) by establishing and appraising a model incorporating serial mediation and moderation. The results reveal that awe positively influences AFBI, with CN and empathy serving as serial mediators. Furthermore, the extent to which awe, CN, and empathy affect AFBI is amplified at higher levels of animal welfare literacy. This research represents a beneficial attempt to investigate AFBI and its internal mechanisms. Destination management organisations (DMOs), tourism product and service designers, marketers, and policymakers can derive valuable practical insights from this study to enhance sustainable development in wildlife tourism.

Exploring the impact of artificial intelligence technologies on tourists’ smart experiences: the moderating role of emotional arousal level

ABSTRACT This study aims to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies affect tourists’ smart experiences and the role of emotional arousal level in this relationship. Drawing from the appraisal theory of emotion, a conceptual framework is proposed to test hypotheses about the connections between AI technologies, emotional arousal level, and tourists’ smart experiences. This study utilized an online survey to collect 301 questionnaires from tourists who experienced AI technologies in four Chinese smart tourism destinations. The results obtained through the structural equation modeling method suggest that four factors – interaction, personalization, co-creation, and privacy – positively impact tourists’ smart experiences. Additionally, the study finds that tourists’ emotional arousal level is a moderator between AI technologies and tourists’ smart experiences. The findings provide theoretical and practical implications for smart tourism destinations and researchers to use AI technologies to enhance tourists’ smart experiences at smart tourism destinations.

Food for thought: the enhanced recall of metaphorical food sentences independent of hunger.

Metaphorical sentences are assumed to be related to more costly processes than their literal counterparts. However, given their frequent use in our daily lives, metaphorical sentences "must come with a benefit" (Noveck et al. Metaphor Symb 16:109-121. https://doi.org/10.1080/10926488.2001.9678889 , 2001). In this paper, we investigated whether metaphorical sentences were better remembered than their literal counterparts. In addition, we were interested in assessing whether the relevance of the metaphors impacted this recall. Anchoring this hypothesis in the appraisal theory, we hypothesized that food-related metaphorical sentences may be particularly relevant when one is hungry, and consequently, be better remembered in that particular physiological state. Participants were presented with randomized metaphorical sentences and their literal counterparts and were later asked to remember the missing word in both metaphorical and literal sentences. General mixed model analyses revealed that metaphorical sentences were better remembered. However, there was no significant effect of hunger. We discuss these results in relation to (1) the metaphor literature and (2) the appraisal theory of emotion.

Do COVID-19 related primary emotions affect risk perceptions, efficacy beliefs, and information seeking and behavior? Examining emotions as audience segments

IntroductionPrimary emotions among the populace during global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, provide valuable insights. Guided by appraisal theories of emotions, this study explores emotional segmentation by mapping primary emotions related to COVID-19 and investigating their impact on cognitive and behavioral outcomes, including risk perceptions, efficacy beliefs, behavioral intentions, prevention behaviors, and information seeking/avoidance.MethodsStudy 1 surveyed young adults (N = 1,368) to investigate their emotions about COVID-19 and examine the effect of these emotions on risk perceptions, efficacy beliefs, and behavioral intentions regarding mask-wearing and physical distancing. Study 2 replicated Study 1 with a quota-based national sample of U.S. adults (N = 8,454) and further tested the effect of primary emotions on preventive behaviors and information seeking/avoidance.ResultsResults indicated that most people experienced negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, and anxiety. These emotions were associated with varying levels of risk perceptions, efficacy beliefs, behavioral intentions, actual behaviors, and information seeking/avoidance. Notably, across both studies, anxious individuals demonstrated more favorable health-related perceptions and behavioral outcomes compared to those experiencing anger.DiscussionThese findings offer insights into the emotional experiences of individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the significant impact of these emotions on risk perceptions and health-related behaviors. Understanding these emotional responses can inform public health strategies and communication efforts during health crises.

The democratization of digital currency in Nigeria: A sentiment analysis of eNaira app usability

Globally, Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is receiving a lot of attention in digital currency deliberations since it is at the top of the agenda of almost every central bank today. Although there is a growing body of literature on CBDCs, user perspectives on their usage and adoption in the literature are very sparse. This study set out to analyze factors impacting the actual usage of CBDC through sentiment analysis of eNaira, the first CBDC to be issued in Africa by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The research relies on the 214 data points extracted from eNaira App users’ comments from Google Play and App Store from 2020 to 2021. It framed its analysis based on theories of moral sentiments and appraisal theory of emotion. This research shows that eNaira users faced multiple challenges; however, CBN's responses to these challenges are minimal. The results highlighted the need to include public sentiments in policy formulation; the Nigerian government's ban on cryptocurrency trading negatively impacted the uptake of the eNaira due to mistrust. This research study contributes theoretically to appraisal theory and the theory of moral sentiment by explaining the evolution and public sentiments towards adopting the novel eNaira in Nigeria.

How supervisor perceived overqualification influences exploitative leadership: the mediating role of job anxiety and the moderating role of psychological entitlement

PurposeDrawing on appraisal theory of emotion, this study aims to establish and test a moderated mediation model underlying the process of exploitative leadership by investigating the mediating role of job anxiety and the moderating role of psychological entitlement.Design/methodology/approachWe collected two-wave questionnaire data from 355 supervisors with matched responses from 1,065 subordinates in Hubei province of China. Hierarchical multiple regression and PROCESS macro were applied to test our hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicated that supervisor perceived overqualification prompted supervisor job anxiety, which then led to raised exploitative leadership. Additionally, we found that supervisor psychological entitlement intensified the direct effect of supervisor perceived overqualification on supervisor job anxiety as well as the indirect effect of supervisor perceived overqualification on exploitative leadership through supervisor job anxiety.Originality/valueAlthough researchers have documented a growing number of consequences of exploitative leadership, less focus has been placed on its antecedents. The study extends our understanding of why, how and when supervisors engage in exploitative behaviors.

ABSTRACT In recent years, there has been a substantial upsurge in the cost of living and income inequality across established democracies. These shifts, intensified by recent public health crises and growing political instability, have subjected voters to an extraordinary mix of social, political, and economic uncertainty. Despite widespread doubt about the future, a consistent finding in the economic voting literature highlights that voters’ evaluation of the past economy strongly influences their decision to either reward or penalize incumbents. Additionally, these studies find that voters’ forward-looking evaluations of personal economic conditions and general economic expectations often yield weak or negligible effects. These patterns motivate an important empirical question – why do future-oriented economic evaluations fall short in yielding a more substantial effect on incumbent support amid considerable personal struggle and uncertainty about economic conditions ahead? Grounded in appraisal theories of emotion, our study suggests that these consistent results may stem from existing measures inadequately capturing the multi-dimensional and affective nature of voters’ future economic concerns. Using data from the Canadian province of Ontario, we explore the extent of voters’ economic anxiety, identify the factors influencing these sentiments, and show that economic anxiety weakens support for incumbents in provincial and municipal elections.

Hospitality Front-line Employees: A Meta-Analysis of Emotion Management at Work

The main purpose of this study was to summarize extant empirical findings on how front-line service employees experience and manage emotions at work. When consolidated, the research on front-line employee emotions revealed mixed and contradictory results and knowledge gaps on workplace challenges of service-oriented employees. The PRISMA were followed for study selection, and the appraisal theory of emotions was used to classify the direct antecedents and outcomes of emotion management. To calculate meta-analytic effect sizes, comprehensive meta-analysis methodology wasapplied to analyze 79 studies (N=28,332). The summary effects of known antecedents, affective events (conflict, customer interactions), stimuli (personality characteristics), and workplace environment (support and display rules) on front-line employees’ emotion management were more modest than previously indicated. Organization, supervisor, and coworker support were found to be a moderator between conflict and employees’ emotion management. The most-researched outcomes of emotion management (burnout and job performance) also showed only modest effect sizes. Job satisfaction was a moderator between emotion management and job performance. The relationship between emotion management and customer-related antecedents and outcomes showed modest to small effect sizes. These results contribute to the ATE and highlight the knowledge gap on how customer emotions and behaviors affect front-line employees’ ability to manage their emotions and provide quality customer service and, in turn, how employee’s transference of emotions might influence customer satisfaction, loyalty, and trust. Managers should provide necessary support to mitigate the impact of affective events that may influence how front-line employees manage emotions at work to increase job satisfaction and performance.

Rally Around the Government or a Populist Response? How Concerns About COVID-19 and Emotional Responses Relate to Institutional Trust and Support for Right-Wing Populism

Recent studies have shown that the coronavirus pandemic not only temporarily increased support for incumbent politicians and trust in experts but also triggered an authoritarian response. Because the pandemic has significantly affected individuals’ goals, needs, and control over their lives, we expect that it has generated emotional reactions. In this article, we study how concerns about COVID-19 relate to institutional trust (trust in political institutions and experts) and a preference for populist right parties—directly and indirectly—via emotions. Our theoretical framework relies on the “rally around the flag” hypothesis, the cultural backlash theory, as well as appraisal theories of emotions. We analyze a novel data set collected as part of the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences Panel Survey for the Netherlands at the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic (October 2020). Our findings reveal that concerns about COVID-19 are positively related to institutional trust but unrelated to preferences for right-wing populism. The relationship between concerns about the coronavirus crisis and trust in political institutions is mediated via fear and sadness; these emotions also explain opposition to right-wing populist parties. We interpret our findings in relation to research on the rally around the flag effect, right-wing populism, and emotions. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and other “rally”-inducing events.

Strengthening Supervisor Bonds but Impairing Coworker Relations? The Divergent Effects of Voice Endorsement

Research on voice endorsement has predominantly focused on factors that predict whether supervisors will react favorably to subordinate suggestions. Beyond considering its antecedents, however, it is equally pertinent to understand how such positive social feedback affects voicers and their relations with others. Drawing from appraisal theories of emotion and the dual-faceted, functional conceptualization of pride, we develop and test a model in which supervisor voice endorsement elicits divergent effect patterns—one underscoring relationship maintenance, and the other relationship impairment. To test our hypotheses, we collected multi-wave data from 414 voicing subordinates and their 112 supervisors employed in a high-tech company. Regarding the relationship maintenance pathway, our results demonstrate that voice endorsement positively relates to future supportive voice toward supervisors, and this effect is mediated by voicers’ felt authentic pride. Meanwhile, for the relationship impairment pathway, endorsement also positively relates to voicer hubristic pride and, in turn, greater interpersonal conflict with coworkers, but only among voicers higher in narcissism. Our results demonstrate that endorsement is a potent tool affecting voicers’ emotions and work behavior, while also highlighting how endorsement reactions may differ in important ways depending on voicers’ dispositions.

Managing my shame: Investigating the effects of organizational identity threat and public service motivation on exemplification

AbstractHow do public employees respond to organizational identity threats? The present study investigates how public employees make sense of and react to threatening events that may call into question organization's core attributes and status. Using social identity theory and the appraisal theory of emotions, we develop a model in which organizational identity induced by negative media coverage threat provokes shame that results in exemplification. We further explain the role of public service motivation as a moderator of the proposed mediated relationships. Predictions are tested in an experimental study and a field study involving French police officers. Our results show that shame mediated the positive effect of organizational identity threat on police officers' exemplification behaviors. When public service motivation is high, police officers are more likely to engage in exemplification to cope with organizational identity threat than when it is slow. Theoretical and practical implications and future research directions are discussed.

Emotional reactions to climate change: a comparison across France, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

We present a study of emotional reactions to climate change utilizing representative samples from France, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom (UK). Drawing on appraisal theories of emotion, we examine relations between appraisals, emotions, and behavioral intentions in the context of climate change. We compare the four countries concerning emotional differences and commonalities and relate our findings to pertinent models of cultural values. Five distinct emotions were measured: worry, hope, fear, outrage, and guilt. In addition, the survey asked respondents to appraise a set of climate-related statements, such as the causality of climate change, or the efficacy of mitigation efforts. Also, a set of climate-relevant actions, such as willingness to reduce energy consumption or support for climate policies, was assessed. Findings show that appraisals of human causation and moral concern were associated with worry and outrage, and appraisals of efficacy and technological solutions were associated with hope. Worry and outrage are associated with intentions to reduce one's energy consumption, whereas hope and guilt are related to support for policies such as tax and price increases. A country comparison shows that French respondents score high on outrage and worry and tend to engage in individual behaviors to mitigate climate change, whereas Norwegian respondents score high on hope and show a tendency to support policies of cost increase. Generally, worry is the most and guilt the least intense emotion. Moral concerns and perceived collective efficacy of one's country in addressing climate change are relatively strong in France, while beliefs in human causation and in negative impacts of climate change prevail in Germany, and confidence in technological solutions are prevalent in Norway. In sum, findings reveal typical patterns of emotional responses in the four countries and confirm systematic associations between emotions and appraisals as well as between emotions and behaviors. Relating these findings to models of cultural values reveals that Norway, endorsing secular and egalitarian values, is characterized by hope and confidence in technological solutions, whereas France and Germany, emphasizing relatively more hierarchical and traditional values, are rather characterized by fear, outrage, and support for behavioral restrictions imposed by climate change policies.

Nature-inspired awe toward tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior intention

Purpose Awe is an important yet largely overlooked emotion in tourism. This paper aims to reveal the underlying mechanism of the effects of nature-inspired awe on stimulating tourists' environmentally responsible behavior (TERB) intention by delving into the serial mediation effect of state construal level, small-self perception and state connectedness to nature (CNT). Design/methodology/approach This research was built upon the appraisal theory of emotion. Study 1 was a scenario-induced quasi-experimental study to test the proposed model linking awe, small-self perception, state CNT and TERB intention. A total of 271 valid questionnaires were collected via an online questionnaire platform. Study 2 was a field study designed to replicate the findings of Study 1 and further uncover the mediating role of the state construal level. Study 2 was conducted in Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area, China. A total of 229 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. Findings This research deepens our understanding of the effects of nature-inspired awe in the tourism and travel fields. This research uncovers the underlying mechanism by which awe increases TERB intention through serial mediation. Specifically, awe inspires tourists to apply a higher level of construal, which makes tourists perceive a smaller self, making them feel more connected to nature and exert more intention to adopt ERB. Originality/value This research linked tourists' mindset (i.e. state construal level), internal (i.e. small-self perception) and external (i.e. state CNT) cognition in an integrated model, explaining how nature-inspired awe contributes to eliciting TERB intention. The findings add critical theoretical contributions to the travel and tourism literature and provide important implications for the tourism industry to inspire awe and benefit from such emotion.

The cost of guilt: unpacking the emotional mechanism between work-to-family conflict and unethical pro-family behavior

Drawing on the appraisal theory of emotions and domain specificity perspective, we explore why and when work-to-family conflict leads to unethical pro-family behavior in the workplace. In particular, we propose that work-to-family conflict reinforces unethical pro-family behavior via employee felt guilt. Further, supervisor support for family issues attenuates the relationship between work-to-family conflict and felt guilt, whereas perceived forgiveness climate strengthens the relationship between felt guilt and unethical pro-family behavior. Two time-lagged field studies conducted in Pakistan and China supported our hypotheses. Study 1 demonstrated that work-to-family guilt mediated the relationship between work-to-family conflict and unethical pro-family behavior. Study 2 replicated these findings and provided additional support for our boundary conditions. Specifically, supervisor support for family issues buffered the positive effect of work-to-family conflict on work-to-family guilt; perceived forgiveness climate amplified the positive effect of work-to-family guilt on unethical pro-family behavior. Theoretical and practical implications of our findings were discussed.

Understanding the drivers of destination equity in the post-pandemic era: the case of Australia

ABSTRACT Drawing on the appraisal theory of emotions and based on an online Qualtrics survey conducted among members of the Australian consumer panel (n = 357), this study examined destination equity considering the changing travel preferences in the post COVID-19 pandemic era. The findings empirically support that in addition to conventional destination equity drivers, tourists in the post-pandemic era consider the internal environment when deciding on a travel destination. Peace of mind was identified as a key manoeuvring factor influencing tourists’ behaviours such as higher payment and share-of-wallet. Theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are presented.

Frustration and Anger Mitigation After Service Failure: The Effect of Other Consumer's Explanation and Employee's Explanation on Frustration and Anger After the Service Failure.

Based on the attribution and appraisal theories of emotion, this study investigates whether a consumer's frustration and anger after a service failure reduces in different ways after hearing explanations from different sources (other customer vs employee vs none) under different blame attribution circumstances (situational vs service provider), and its subsequent influence on complaining intention. In Study 1, valid data from 239 participants (46.9% female, Mage=35.6 years) were used to test the interaction effect of the explanation source and blame attribution on frustration and anger. In Study 2, using valid answers from 253 students at Korea University (57.9% female, Mage=20.9 years), Study 1 was replicated and, in addition, tested the moderated mediating impact on complaining intention. The overall theoretical model was tested with ANOVA and Hayes process model 8. When blame attribution was situational, the employee's explanation did not mitigate either frustration or anger, whereas the other customer's explanation mitigated frustration but not anger. In contrast, when blame attribution was towards the service provider, the employee's explanation mitigated both frustration and anger, whereas the other customer's explanation mitigated only frustration. In addition, the mitigation of frustration and anger by other customers subsequently led to a decrease in complaining intention, which was stronger and only significant when blame attribution was situational. However, only anger acted as a mediator between the employee's explanation and complaining intention, which did not vary according to blame attribution. The results of the study advance the current knowledge on informational support as a service recovery process by suggesting the crucial role of other consumers in mitigating the target customer's frustration, especially under situational service failure, which successively leads to a decrease in complaining intention, whereas the employee's explanation decreases complaining intention only through the mitigation of anger.

AbstractExisting studies show that the COVID‐19 pandemic influences employee outcome in the work domain. However, the impact of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee daily insomnia remains unexplored. Addressing this research gap can help scholars understand the risks of COVID‐19 in the non‐work domain. Drawing on appraisal theories of emotion, we explore how and when business threat due to COVID‐19 triggers employee insomnia. Using an experience sampling methodology where 89 employees are surveyed for 7 workdays, our multilevel analyses show that employee daily hope and workplace anxiety mediate the effects of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee insomnia. Furthermore, socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) practices weaken the negative relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and employees' hope and mitigate the positive relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and their workplace anxiety. We also find that SRHRM practices influence the indirect effect of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee insomnia via workplace anxiety. Our study helps understand the underlying mechanisms in the relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and employee insomnia and further sheds light on the role of SRHRM in mitigating the destructive effect of business threat due to COVID‐19.

Linking perceived overqualification to work withdrawal, employee silence, and pro-job unethical behavior in a Chinese context: the mediating roles of shame and anger

Using appraisal theories of emotions as the theoretical basis, we delineate how perceived overqualification relates to work withdrawal, employee silence, and pro-job unethical behavior through the mediating effects of discrete emotions (i.e., shame and anger). We suggest that perceived overqualification is positively associated with shame and ultimately work withdrawal and employee silence, and it has a positive effect on pro-job unethical behavior through the mediating role of anger as well as the serial mediating effect of shame and anger. Data from a three-wave, time-lagged survey of 225 full-time employees in China, provides support for our theoretical model and hypotheses. Taken together, our results suggest that discrete emotional states can help to interpret how and why overqualified employees exhibit distinct action tendencies. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings.

An Attachment-Based Management Framework of Destination Attributes: Drawing on the Appraisal Theories of Emotion

A management framework for destination attributes is critical for the reasonable allocation of resources. However, existing management frameworks for destination attributes estimate the management value of attributes by calculating their contribution to cognitive satisfaction, which deviates from the “cognition-affection” relationship in psychology. In this scenario, destination attachment is an important concept reflecting the emotional values of attributes. This study proposes an attachment-based management framework for destination attributes based on the appraisal theories of emotion in the context of the progressive development of Hangzhou, China, as a typical mature destination. A networking method is applied to develop the management framework. This is the first study to establish an emotion-based management framework for destination attributes from a psychological perspective. Implications regarding the framework development method and destination attribute management are also provided.

Check-in experience: What is the role of emotions and satisfaction?

Given the importance of the customer hotel experience, this study examined the moderating role of emotions and satisfaction on the hotel micro-experiences phases: anticipation, participation, and reflection. PROCESS Macro was used to analyze the data collected from 327 mega-resort customers immediately after their hotel check-in. Based on appraisal theory of emotions, the findings revealed a significant interaction between cognitive loyalty, check-in emotions and satisfaction on future intention to engage with front-line employees and intention to trust the hotel as a service provider. Check-in emotions and satisfaction moderated-moderation was mediated by emotional engagement intention in the relationship between cognitive loyalty and trust intention. The theoretical and practical contributions to the hospitality customer experience line of research are presented and discussed.
