International Voices: Are We Learning from History?

The panel organized by the SfAA International Committee in San Francisco was focused on the topic "Are We Learning from history: Public Health Research, Policy and Programs." Participants gave the audience the opportunity to reflect upon five questions. The papers were: "Picking Mangos from the Trees: Is the Timing Right?" (Elizabeth Guillette, University of Arizona), "Are Lessons Learned? The Case of a Women's Empowerment Project in Madagascar" (Gisele Maynard Tucker); "Applications of Medical Anthropology to Epidemiological Research: Collaboration and Consternation" (Deborah O. Erwin, University of Arkansas Medical Sciences); "Tolerance toward Cultural Difference in Public Health: Contributions of Medical Anthropology to Ethical Relativism" (Raymond Massé, Laval University); and "Applied Anthropology: the ‘Black Duck’ of Impact Assessment" (Alain Anciaux, Brussels University).

Advancing Applied Anthropology: Joe Hill in Cyberspace: Steps Toward Creating "One Big Union"

L'A. met en evidence le potentiel de resistance aux exces de la mondialisation a partir des coalitions construites a partir de la base et utilisant les reseaux de communication lies au processus meme du phenomene de mondialisation (chemin de fer, internet...). Il montre que ces coalitions informelles generees de facon spontanee constituent l'aspect non-hegemonique de la mondialisation et correspondent a l'ideal d'une organisation et coalition unitaire et transnationale des travailleurs. Il met en evidence les similitudes entre trois exemples historiques de mouvements de defense des droits des travailleurs : le projet du International Workers of the World, syndicat cree en 1905 a Chicago ; le mouvement social contre l'Organisation mondiale du commerce a Seattle ; la campagne mediatique des etudiants americains contre la multinationale Nike dans les annees 1990. L'objectif de l'A., a travers ces exemples, est d'ouvrir de nouvelles voies de recherche pour une anthropologie appliquee solidaire et surpuissante.

Gender, Environment and Development in Honduras: An Applied Anthropology Internship

In my very first semester as an applied anthropology graduate student at the University of Maryland, I was asked to define my ‘domain’ within anthropology. Choosing my domain was a difficult, but rewarding, process. First I had to gather my various life experiences and interests and mold them into a cohesive theme. I was able to accomplish this by combining my intense intellectual curiosity for human gender relations, previous course work in development anthropology, and unwavering dedication to environmentalism. Then I had the challenging task of researching ways in which others had addressed similar issues by conducting a thorough literature search on each aspect of my domain and the combinations thereof. Backed by a distinct body of literature, this domain—gender, environment, and development—thus became the backbone of my ensuing course work and internship. When I finally had a finished product, I realized how establishing and writing my domain forced me to take a critical look at these issues in order to find personal connections and meanings. Since then, I have further clarified and expanded my domain to develop a toolbox of skills and knowledge that I will use in my career as a practicing anthropologist.

Culturally Competent Practice Principles for Planned Interventions in Organizations and Communities

…non-profit organizations are worth greater attention by anthropologists…. Focusing anthropological work on assisting programs of non-profits, development of non-profit agency capacity, and the charitable work of community oriented churches then could become a win-win-win situation for anthropology, anthropologists, and the nonprofits. Government agencies and policies could benefit as well, should anthropologists start using their knowledge to better guide the anticipated increase in delivery of government funded services through the auspices of non-profit agencies. Anthropologists have the skills needed to learn, understand, research, evaluate, communicate, and otherwise bridge the gaps between government policy, program needs and the realities of non-profits. Situation and Time: Observations on the Chinese Way of Doing Business

My interest in cross-cultural interaction between Americans and Chinese is a practical one. I have arranged scholarly exchanges with Chinese ethnologists; helped to initiate a study abroad program in Beijing for the Oregon University System; served as a study abroad director for that program twice; acted as a liaison and advisor for a small tea export business; and most recently was a consultant and cultural expert for a Ford Foundation project related to the expansion of higher education in China. In addition I have taught a course on Advanced Cross-Cultural Communication-China three times for graduate students in international management, and mentored a dozen students from China in the MA program in Applied Anthropology at Oregon State University. My Chinese graduate students have given me many insights into their experience trying to adapt to American culture and they have conducted their own research on cross-cultural issues. Later I will refer to theses authored by two of these former students as well as my own experiences.

Sources documents the work of applied and practicing anthropologists through publication of PROJECT PROFILES. These are based on materials submitted to the Applied Anthropology Documentation Project at the University of Kentucky. The project, since its inception in 1978, collects the so-called fugitive literature produced by anthropologists. The collection includes technical reports, research monographs, conference papers, practicum and internship reports, legal briefs, proposals, and other materials.

Applied Anthropology at Devils Tower National Monument

This paper summarizes research conducted for the National Park Service in 1992 bearing on user group perceptions and use of Devils Tower National Monument (DTNM). Ethnographic and archaeological methods were used to collect data on Native American and recreational climber use of DTNM. Fifty-eight climbers were interviewed during June and July. Twenty-one Native American offering sites were located and recorded during this time. Representatives of the Medicine Wheel Coalition for Sacred Sites of North America were interviewed regarding their perception and use of Devils Tower and their opinions about climbing. While climbers did not perceive their activities as hindering Native American worship within DTNM, Native Americans interviewed were opposed to the climbing of one of their major sacred sites in the northern Plains.

International Voices Unexpected Results in an International Framework: Some Theoretical Paths of Thinking

The panel organized by the SfAA International Committee for the 1999 Tucson meetings was titled "Vulnerabilities and Challenges at the International Level." My role here is not to summarize the papers but to find some commonality illustrating some ways to anticipate important variables and results in applied projects. I draw upon some theoretical formulations previously developed by myself (Anciaux, Alain. The Serendipitous Effects of Fundraising Special Events: An Applied Anthropology Pilot Study. Baltimore: The John Hopkins International Fellowship in Philanthropy Program. 166 pages. 1991). The session's papers were "Mother's Home-Medication in Africa" by Gisele Maynard Tucker, "The Native American Export Market" by Gordon Bronitsky, Global Tourism, Local Communities" by Gregory Teal, and "Heritage Tourism for the Next Millennium" by Phil Young.

1997 Malinowski Award Lecture:Communicating 10,000 Years Into the Future

Ward H. Goodenough is professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as president of the Society for Applied Anthropology in 1963 and editor of the American Anthropologist from 1966-1970. Dr. Goodenough is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a recipient of the American Anthropological Association's Distinguished Service Award.

Cidadania de quem? Possibilidades e limites da antropologia

Resumo Este trabalho – através do exemplo de um projeto de pesquisa e intervenção recém-concluído – pretende contribuir com uma discussão a respeito de cidadania naquilo que envolveria mais diretamente o nosso oficio de antropólogos. Trata-se de refletirmos sobre as possibilidades e os limites da antropologia aplicada. Adiantamos que muitos são os limites, mas damo-nos conta também que a percepção desses limites está mais diretamente vinculada com o imenso potencial crítico que a própria disciplina antropológica nos instrumentaliza do que com a avaliação, estrito senso, da eficácia da intervenção. É esta dimensão crítica associada ao fazer antropológico que pode trazer alguma real contribuição política.

Sol Tax and Tribal Sovereignty

Nancy Oestreich Lurie is curator emerita of anthropology, Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM). This article draws upon her first-hand knowledge of the American Indian scene including ongoing research with the Ho-Chunk Nation (formerly Winnebago) that began in 1944; lasting friendships made with Indian people across the country while serving as assistant coordinator to Sol Tax during the American Indian Chicago Conference; and association as an action anthropologist in the founding of the Wisconsin Winnebago government under the Indian Reorganization Act, the Menominee's drive to repeal their termination, and the establishment of the Milwaukee Indian Community School and the Potawatomi Bingo-Casino enterprise in Milwaukee. Her work as an expert witness in cases before the U.S. Indian Claims Commission and federal and state courts familiarized her with the history and effects of federal Indian policy. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 1998 meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology, where the results of discussion enriched and helped to clarify the present version. In addition to published sources cited, this account rests in large part on personal recollections, particularly of the American Indian Chicago Conference, and on the Indian affairs file of newspaper clippings and tribal and intertribal newspapers maintained since 1972 in the Anthropology Department at the Milwaukee Public Museum.
