Digital solidarity and adaptation: applications developed for refugees in host countries

The scale of international migration is growing day by day, and the issue of refugees constitutes a significant agenda item for all countries. In today's digital age, characterized by technological advancements, refugees are also benefiting from the advantages of technology. With various applications downloaded to their mobile phones, refugees can directly access all kinds of information about the countries they are heading to and even communicate with each other to share experiences. This study explores how mobile phone applications can be developed to serve the refugees in the familiarizing themselves with the receiving culture. In the study, a total of 10 applications prepared for refugees on Android and iOS platforms, selected by random sampling and purposeful sampling methods, were examined. These applications were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. As a result, when the applications developed in host countries were examined, it was observed that the most needed basic information for refugees, such as housing, education, finding a job, health, language, daily words, legal documents, rules, and fundamental rights, was provided. Additionally, in the 10 refugee applications examined, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) were used as locative media for mapping locations. Location-based data and maps that show where refugees are located are extremely important for them. These maps are believed to help reduce stress, make them feel safe, and facilitate the adaptation process by showing refugees the nearest shelters, dining places, hospitals, transportation, and asylum locations.

Socio-Demographic Characteristics and Adoption of Mobile Phone Applications for Improved Small-scale Commercial Agriculture in Makonde District, Zimbabwe

Mobile applications have provided a new way for agricultural transformation. This is set to revolutionise the agriculture sector with easy access to vital agricultural information on weather, market trends, pest, and disease management, and best agriculture practices to enhance agricultural productivity and profitability. However, there is a dearth of studies on the adoption of mobile applications in agriculture. It was important for this study to understand the impact of farmers’ demographic characteristics on the adoption of mobile applications in small-scale commercial agriculture. The study applied the quantitative research approach, a sample size of 213 small-scale commercial farmers, a descriptive cross-sectional research design, and the structured household questionnaire survey instrument, purposive random and stratified sampling techniques to collect primary data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed a higher adoption rate of mobile applications among young farmers than old farmers. The study indicated that female small-scale commercial farmers adopted mobile applications than male farmers. The study revealed that the majority of small-scale commercial farmers were literate. Further, the study highlighted that married farmers exhibited a greater tendency to adopt mobile applications than single, divorced, separated, and widowed. Furthermore, the study revealed that the majority of small-scale commercial farmers were engaged in agriculture as their primary occupation. The study argued that young farmers, female farmers, educated farmers, married farmers, and farming as a primary occupation positively influenced the adoption of mobile phone applications for improved small-scale commercial agriculture. The study recommends that policymakers and implementers should consider socio-demographic characteristics as critical determinants of the adoption of mobile phone applications for improved small-scale commercial agriculture to tailor strategies that promote the adoption of mobile applications based on different farmer age groups

Urban Exposome and Health

Abstract Background The environment in which we live is thought to explain 70% of the non-communicable disease burden. The aim of EXPANSE project (funded from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 874627) is to evaluate the optimal strategies for maintaining health in the context of contemporary urban environments. As a component of the project, Urban Labs allow deep phenotyping of the urban exposome and assessing its use and perception. The Urban Labs aim to improve exposure assessment, identify mediating and modifying lifestyle factors, and link the urban exposome to intermediate endpoints relevant for cardiometabolic and pulmonary health. Methods By monitoring the activities of 4,000 individuals in five distinct urban areas, Urban Labs provide a comprehensive understanding of the urban exposome, which can be compared with residential address-based model estimates. The participants complete a baseline questionnaire, repeated bi-monthly questionnaires and exposure-specific questionnaires over a period of 2 years using mobile phone application (ExpanSeeker). Two-week personalized measurements including spatial-temporal activity patterns, sensor-based environmental and behavioral measurements, and minimally invasive biological sample collection are performed covering different seasons. Results The Baseline Questionnaire (BQ) and two-weeks measurement campaigns (MC) were completed in European cities as follows: Athens BQ = 379, MC = 232; Barcelona BQ = 1040, MC = 303; Basel BQ = 731, MC = 655; Lodz BQ = 634, MC = 100; The Netherlands (multicity) BQ = 1033, MC = 326. Data collection process is ongoing. Conclusions The collection of novel data on individuals activities and perceptions within temporal and geographical contexts in Urban Labs will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of how the urban dwellers are exposed to and interact with their environment, thereby supporting healthier urban engineering and policy making. Key messages • Urban Labs will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the urban environment on individual’s behavior, their exposome, enabling more accurate prediction of non-communicable risk. • Urban Labs will provide a base to support healthier urban engineering and policy making.

Prevention of dementia using mobile phone applications (PRODEMOS): a multinational randomised controlled effectiveness-implementation trial

Abstract Background The expected increase of dementia prevalence in the coming decades will mainly be within low-and middle-income countries and those with low socioeconomic status (SES) in high income countries. Forty percent of dementia is associated with modifiable, lifestyle-related cardiovascular risk factors. Mobile health interventions with remote coaching can help reach underserved high-risk populations globally. Methods This open label, blinded endpoint, hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigated whether a coach-supported mHealth intervention can reduce dementia risk in persons aged 55-75 years of low SES in UK or from the general population in China with at least two dementia risk factors. The primary effectiveness outcome was change in CAIDE dementia risk score (including age, education, sex, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, BMI, physical exercise) after 12-18 months of intervention. Main implementation outcomes were coverage, acceptability, appropriateness, adoption, feasibility, sustainability, fidelity, and costs using a mixed methods approach. Findings Between 15th January 2021 and 18th April 2023, 1,488 persons were included and randomised (734 intervention, 754 control), with 1,229 (82·6%) available for analysis of the primary effectiveness outcome. After a mean follow-up of 16 months, the mean CAIDE score improved by 0·16 points in the intervention group vs. 0·01 in the control group (Mean Difference (MD) 0·16, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0·03-0·29). The effect was larger in those who adhered to the intervention (MD 0·27, 95%CI 0·12-0·44) and those planning to change lifestyle (MD 0·33, 95%CI 0·10-0·57). Ten percent of those invited participated; of these, 81% adopted the intervention and 50% continued active participation throughout the study. For the individual components of the CAIDE score, there were no statistically significant differences for systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and BMI, but in the intervention group physical inactivity was reduced more than in the control group (MD 6·7%, 95%CI 2·1 to 11·2) and more participants quit smoking (MD -3·1%, 95%CI -4·8 to -1·5). Interpretation A coach-supported mHealth intervention to improve lifestyle is modestly effective in reducing dementia risk factors in those with low SES in the UK and any SES in China. Implementation is challenging in these populations, but those reached actively participated. Whether this will result in less cognitive decline and dementia requires a larger RCT with long follow-up.

Unveiling the clinical profiles of heart failure across diverse stages and phenotypes: insights from the national echocardiographic society registry

Abstract Background The modern comprehension of heart failure (HF), based on a staging paradigm, demands systematic screening to promptly identify individuals at risk, those in the pre-HF stage, and symptomatic HF patients across various phenotypes (HFpEF, HFmrEF, and HFrEF). The discernment of clinical profiles within these categories holds significant potential for improving screening and ensuring timely therapeutic interventions. Material and Methods Our national echocardiographic society executed a multicenter HF screening program. General practitioners in 13 primary care centers utilized the original mobile app to determine referrals for transthoracic echocardiography and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) testing in patients without a prior HF diagnosis. The 2021 ESC guidelines' algorithms were employed for HF diagnosis (HFpEF, HFmrEF, HFrEF). This study identifies two pre-heart failure (pre-HF) stages: "heart stress" (elevated NT-proBNP in asymptomatic individuals with risk factors, regardless of structural heart disease or cardiac dysfunction) and individuals "at risk for HF" (normal NTproBNP and at least one HF risk factor). Ultimately, all patients were categorized into six groups: (I) no HF, no risk; (II) at risk for HF; (III) heart stress; (IV) HFpEF; (V) HFmrEF; and (VI) HFrEF. Subsequently, the eleven clinical variables were compared among groups (II) to (VI) using chi-square test. Results Among 930 screened outpatients (mean age 66±11 years, 61% female), diagnosis of HF was established in 34.2% (Figure, pie). Heart stress was found in 22.3% patients, and 38.1% were at risk for HF, while 5.5 % had neither HF nor risk factors. Group comparison revealed that older individuals were more frequent in the HFpEF group, females predominated in the heart-stress and HFpEF groups, and males in the HFrEF group (Figure, table). Obesity was the most frequent among those at risk and HFmrEF. Atrial fibrillation and pathological ECG increased gradually from those at risk to HFrEF. Previous MI was the most common in heart stress and HFmrEF groups, while arterial hypertension >10 years prevailed in HFpEF and HFmrEF patients. Diabetes mellitus > 5 years was present in 24-28% across groups. CKD or eGFR≤60 ml/min/1.73m² increased gradually towards HFmrEF. The family history of CMP or SCD was positive in 17-24%, with no significant differences observed across groups. Additionally, a small number of patients had a history of previous cardiotoxic cancer treatment, and no significant differences were found between groups. Conclusions The mobile phone application used in primary care successfully identified a significant number of pre-heart failure patients requiring further evaluation. Different HF stages and phenotypes exhibit distinct clinical profiles, aiding in the screening process and contributing to a deeper understanding of the heart's pathophysiological adaptation to diverse risk factors during HF development.

Ghaslah: Car wash application

It is known in Oman and many countries that technological devices and artificial intelligence have become a part of daily life. People use them to complete daily tasks and communicate among themselves, as well as facilitating some tasks that require time and effort. Therefore, there are many phone applications that have been developed to serve people, and they were created and developed by Omanis. These applications facilitate the promotion of the tourism, economic, and commercial sectors. Some of them support tourism by showing tourist places and introducing them to tourists, and some show important events in the Sultanate. Which tourists love to go to and supports the economy through the financial returns that result from this trade through these applications. In this project, we proposed creating a mobile application titled Ghaslah. It is an application concerned with car washes. It supports the customer and the owners of car wash companies. It enables the customer to choose the appropriate car wash company and choose the best services that the customer needs. It also supports segments of society, including women, the elderly, and people with special needs in particular. It supports car wash companies by displaying the services provided by the companies at the lowest costs in terms of advertising and other things, enabling companies to provide their services such as reservations and home services. This application will enhance the economic aspect in Oman and the owners of car wash companies and satisfy the customers with services that suit their needs.

Awareness and perception on the use of smartphone applications for crop protection among undergraduate students in Southwestern Nigeria

Mobile applications in crop protection especially for speedy pest diagnosis, monitoring, and management are increasingly gaining global attention and support. An understanding of the awareness and perception of the youths, particularly students in tertiary institutions (who are heavy users of smartphones), on the use of smartphone applications for crop protection, is crucial for sharpening their orientations towards embracing the digital ecosystem in agriculture. The imperativeness is evident in the ongoing government drive towards promoting students’ engagement in digital agriculture as accommodated in the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (2022–2027). Consequently, this study investigated awareness and perception of mobile phone applications among crop and agricultural extension-related final-year students in selected Universities in Southwest Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure was used in selecting 407 students. Data were obtained with the aid of questionnaires. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation using SPSS software. Findings show that very few (less than 8%) of the respondents were aware of the usage of specific smart/android phone applications for pest identification, disease diagnosis, and weather forecasting. Less than 4% ever used smart/android phones for pest identification, crop protection, and information sourcing on disease diagnosis and management. However, their perception of the need for pest and disease diagnosis as a foundation step to enhance crop protection (4.65 points on a scale of 5), and readiness to use android/smartphone applications for this purpose (MS = 4.45) was positive. There are enormous implications for increased awareness and knowledge sharing on the use of android/smartphone applications for crop protection and other interventions to promote digital agriculture among students in Nigeria.

A computer-based evaluation system: Its design, implementation and results obtained on a general chemistry course

Using multiple evaluation methods and systems give a comprehensive assessment. A computer-based multiple-choice assessment system was designed, implemented, posted online, and used to assess students as part of their final evaluation marks for a discipline. The online system of evaluation was intended to be used multiple times for evaluating the assimilation degree of a specific course at the end of the course. The data recorded for the period 2017–2023 with about 1400 distinct users were used to analyze the performance of the evaluation system. The system worked fine and a slight modification of it served well on remote evaluation during COVID-19 period. However, the upturn of mobile phone applications requires the creation of a system adapted to the new virtual reality.

Implantable Intraocular Fluorescence Sensor for Visualized Monitoring of Alzheimer's Disease

AbstractWith an increase in the older individuals, the global incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing. Early diagnosis of AD necessitates long‐term monitoring; however, conventional diagnostic methods such as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are unsuitable for frequent use because of infrastructure limitations. The eye, connected to the brain via the optic nerve, offers a potential window for monitoring neurodegenerative diseases. This study presents a novel system for continuous intraocular monitoring using a fluorescent aptamer‐conjugated intraocular lens (FAIOL). FAIOL emits fluorescent signals in the presence of beta‐secretase‐1 (BACE1), an enzyme associated with amyloid beta 1–42 production. These signals can be analyzed using mobile phone applications. In vitro, experiments demonstrates that FAIOL responded to BACE1 by detecting low concentrations of the target molecule over extended periods. Ex vivo tests using porcine eyeballs shows an increase in the fluorescence signal intensity by more than 8% within 5 h in the presence of BACE1. The integrated image analysis program reduces sensor noise and provides numerical signal values, facilitating a straightforward interpretation. FAIOL holds significant potential as an innovative platform for the early diagnosis and long‐term monitoring of AD and promises improved patient outcomes through timely intervention and ongoing surveillance.

A Survey on Women Safety and Health Monitoring System

Though we have many armies and super forces to protect everybody, the day to day crime rate against women has not been reduced. There are several safety devices available to protect the women during the violence, but need more human intervention such as entering the data, or shaking the device roughly. We propose a solution for a secure and peaceful environment for women with handbag safety hand-held devices with the aim to provide false proof women safety devices by overcoming the disadvantages in existing system. When we are talking more about Women empowerment, Women achievements it is also very important to think about women safety since a huge numbers (848) of women’s are Indian Women Are Harassed, Raped, Killed Every Day. The proposed work aims at IoT based women safety device by hardware controller attached to the handbag, android application and Bluetooth connectivity in Smartphone. By pressing the controller button, the device alerts the first holder, relatives stored in the database and police when a woman is not safe. The main advantage of the work is, the device works without internet connectivity. Additional features such as protecting the valuable things to be stolen by thieves in crowded places or buses by a separate alarming system, heartbeat sensor setup to monitor heart rate, fingerprint scanner for effecting accessing of the devices and also the mobile android application provide the victim’s location to reach the women and safeguard the women from any harassment at the right time. The main thought of this paper is that it will not only protect the women from physical harassment during odd hours but also safe the women health when it is found abnormal, as a single device comparatively.

The impact of intravenous versus submucosal dexamethasone on short-term patient response: A randomized controlled trial.

The purpose of this randomized, cross-over trial was to determine if a preoperative dose of dexamethasone administered submucosally is as effective as intravenous (IV) dexamethasone in reducing pain, swelling, and analgesic consumption after periodontal flap surgery. Thirty-nine patients planned for two similar flap surgeries under IV sedation were included. Before the first surgery, patients were randomized to receive 8mg of IV or submucosal dexamethasone. Via the alternate route, 0.9% sodium chloride (placebo) was administered. Dexamethasone was administered via the opposite route during the second surgery. A standardized regimen of 600mg ibuprofen and 325mg acetaminophen was used to manage postoperative pain. Patients recorded pain and swelling levels on a 21-point numerical rating scale (NRS-21) and a four-point visual rating scale (VRS-4), as well as analgesic usage via a phone application at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 168h postoperatively. While NRS-21 and VRS-4 data suggest a trend toward decreased pain and swelling with IV administration, there were no significant differences in analgesic usage or pain at any time and a significant difference in swelling only at 72 h in favor of IV administration (p=0.047). There was no significant difference in pain or analgesic usage following periodontal flap surgery comparing IV and submucosal dexamethasone. A statistically significant difference in swelling between groups at 72 h is likely of limited clinical relevance. Submucosal dexamethasone is an effective way to mitigate pain following periodontal surgery, particularly when IV access for sedation is not required.

Exploring the frequency response of mobile phones applications for sound monitoring in urban green spaces

Citizen science engages non-professional scientists globally in scientific endeavors, fostering commitment to environmental conservation initiatives. This research explores the frequency response of mobile phones for sound monitoring, particularly in the context of urban green spaces. The method involves Laboratory tests at the Brazilian National Metrology Institute, Standardization, and Industrial Quality (Inmetro), evaluating two Android and one iOS devices using the NoiseCapture and Openoise apps. Laboratory tests conform to the frequency response standards outlined in IEC 61672-1, covering the 63Hz to 16kHz range. Following this, the devices captured audio scenes encompassing human, natural, and machine sounds at the University of São Paulo campus. Findings revealed that the frequency response of iPhones functioned as Class 2 sound level meters except for low-frequency bands. Android consistently performed similarly across both applications tested and exhibited acceptable performance in mid-range frequencies. Therefore, when considering citizen science projects, emphasis should be placed on app selection, prioritizing additional features like sound mapping. Field results showed minimal errors from human and transportation sounds but challenges with high-frequency components from birds, insects, and machines. The study concludes the necessity for alternative measurement systems identifying animal sound sources, along with involving non-professional scientists in scientific research.

A-348 Portable aptamer-based home monitoring system for blood phenylalanine measurement

Abstract Background Aptatek BioSciences, Inc. has developed a home monitoring tool for blood phenylalanine (phe) levels. The Aptatek system integrates a proprietary aptamer assay approach with a user-friendly handheld, smartphone-enabled test platform. PKU (phenylketonuria), is an inborn error of phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism If undiagnosed or untreated, phe accumulates in all body tissues, including the blood and brain, where it is especially neurotoxic and when untreated it can cause significant cognitive impairment and neurological defects. PKU management targets maintaining blood Phe concentration within the therapeutic range (120-360uM) to avoid severe neurological sequelae, mainly through nutritional therapy. Methods PheCheck™ includes a portable hand-held reader, software accessible as a mobile phone application, and a disposable single-use lateral flow cassette, blood collection, cap, and buffer chamber. PheCheck™ detects phe by binding of the phe in a small blood sample using small molecule-specific DNA aptamers. A patient (or caregiver) collects 5μl of capillary blood using a lancet to lance the fingertip and use the collection cap to collect the specimen. Once collected, the specimen is placed into the buffer chamber where the blood is diluted and processed in preparation for a lateral flow assay. The buffer chamber is placed on top of a lateral flow cassette to release the solution into the cassette. The lateral flow cassette is inserted into a small electronic reader after specimen incubation. The reader will detect a fluorescent signal from the strip and report the quantitative Phe concentration present in the specimen to the integrated mobile phone application. The reader has a simple design with a single operating push button, USB data connection port, and replaceable battery compartment. The reader reads the output of the lateral flow cassette and reports the result to a Smartphone app. The app is designed to either display the quantitative results or store the results without displaying the quantitative value. Results Twelve patients were trained on the PheCheck system and observed using the system for self-testing. Patients also prepared dried blood spot cards for comparative testing using LC-mass spectrometry. Patients were asked to return to the clinic within two weeks to retest. The blood phenylalanine levels measured by the PheCheck system were within targeted standard deviation of the dried blood spots demonstrating the feasibility of portable home-based testing for routine monitoring of blood phenylalanine levels in phenylketonuria patients. Such a portable system would enable real time monitoring and adjustment of diet or therapy for chronic diseases such as PKU. Conclusions Aptatek has developed a DNA aptamer based portable monitor for measuring blood phenylalanine levels. The system quantitatively measures phenylalanine from a 5-microliter finger stick blood sampler. Aptamer-based detection of phenylalanine provides reliable quantitation across a wide clinical concentration range and encouraging performance relative to gold standard testing of venous blood draw or dried blood spots. Analysis of samples from patients on Palynziq indicate that the PheCheck system could provide more reliable testing than venous blood draws. The system shows strong promise for routine home monitoring of blood phe levels by patients.

The impact of a continuous care model utilizing a smartphone application on quality of life and anxiety levels among gynecologic cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundPatients diagnosed with gynecological cancers often face a range of complications that can impact their quality of life and increase their anxiety. Nursing models combined with mobile phone applications have the potential to improve outcomes for these patients. This study aimed to assess the impact of a continuous care model utilizing a smartphone application on quality of life and anxiety levels among gynecologic cancer patients.MethodsThis study involved two phases: (1) mobile App development and (2) implementation of the intervention. The two-group randomized controlled trial included 70 participants with gynecological cancers referred to medical centers affiliated with Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences in 2023. The participants were randomized into control or intervention groups (n = 35 per group). Finally, 68 patients completed the trial. The intervention group received an 8-week intervention incorporating the continuous care model, whereas the control group received routine care (the standard support provided by nurses both during and after hospitalization). The participants completed the Spielberger state-trait anxiety and quality of life (QLQ-C30) questionnaires before, immediately after, and two months after the intervention. The data were analyzed via the chi-square test, independent samples t test, analysis of covariance, and repeated-measures ANOVA.ResultsThere were no significant differences in the baseline data between the two groups. However, after the intervention, the intervention group reported a significant increase in quality of life, with mean scores rising from 68.90 ± 17.50 to 73.78 ± 16.79 immediately after the intervention and to 80.61 ± 9.90 at the two-month follow-up. In contrast, the control group showed no significant improvement. Additionally, state anxiety significantly decreased in the intervention group from 51.64 ± 14.97 to 40.20 ± 11.70 at the follow-up, and trait anxiety scores in the intervention group decreased significantly from 49.91 ± 14.96 to 39.82 ± 10.28 at the follow-up, whereas the scores of the control group worsened.ConclusionThe intervention improved quality of life and reduced anxiety in patients with gynecological cancers. Given the scant attention given to mobile application-based follow-up in gynecologic cancer patients in previous studies, this approach can be incorporated into routine care to support patients, and it is recommended for nurses, health care providers, and physicians.Trial registrationThe study was registered as a randomized controlled trial in the Clinical Trial Registration Center of Iran. Expanding oncology navigation capacity through digital and in-person volunteer support: ACS Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support (ACS CARES).

205 Background: The American Cancer Society (ACS) CARES (Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support) is a novel nationwide non-clinical navigation program for people with cancer and caregivers. ACS CARES includes a multi-channel approach providing direct, individualized, non-clinical assistance through a native app, telephonic, and in-person support. This study examines the feasibility of leveraging non-clinical virtual and in-person volunteers to expand navigation capacity. Methods: This pragmatic study evaluates the implementation of volunteer navigation of patients and caregivers accessing virtual navigation via the ACS CARES app and in-person/telephonic navigation for patients at 3 pilot cancer centers. Virtual and in-person volunteers aim to deliver timely information and support for health-related social needs (HRSNs) identified using a HRSN assessment, which was adapted from the NCCN distress thermometer and problem list. Initial process measures include number and demographics of patients served, HRSNs, and time spent by volunteers. Results: In the first year, 4,673 individuals utilized the ACS CARES app (54% people with cancer, 31% caregivers, 15% supporters). Since launching the virtual connection feature on 11/30/2023, we have trained 122 virtual volunteers (20% Black, 78% female, 8% Hispanic) who have made 182 connections with app users. App users prioritized matches based on shared cancer experience (47.7%), caregiving for an adult with cancer (28.8%), need for help finding information (12.4%), desire for a Spanish-speaking volunteer (3%), other (8.1%, geographic location, caring for a child with cancer volunteers averaged). Community volunteers averaged 11 messages per connection over 35 days. From 10/23/2023 to 4/30/2024, 31 volunteers at 3 cancer centers navigated 195 patients who were 55% female, 22% Black, with an average age of 53.02. The most common HRSNs were finances and transportation. Volunteers spent an average of 105 min per patient per in-person meeting, 35 min per patient per follow-up call, 38 min per patient coordinating care and sending encrypted messages, and 75 min per patient identifying and providing resources to address barriers to care. Conclusions: Preliminary data indicates feasibility of leveraging the multi-channel approach of CARES to address gaps in access to navigation. App utilization data analysis is ongoing. In-person support will be expanded to 9 additional cancer centers in September.

Handheld Cellphone Use and Risky Driving in Adolescents

Handheld cellphone use while driving is associated with increased motor vehicle crash risk among adolescents. To examine the association of handheld cellphone use while driving with kinematic risky driving (KRD) events-hard braking and rapid acceleration-in adolescent drivers. Adolescents aged 16.50 to 17.99 years licensed 365 days or less in Pennsylvania were eligible to participate in this cross-sectional study. Enrollment occurred from July 29, 2021, to June 6, 2022. Participants downloaded a smartphone telematics cellphone app to record driving data for 60 days. Trip characteristics, including frequency, length, and duration; presence of speeding; frequency and duration of handheld cellphone use; time of day; and presence of precipitation. Kinematic risky driving events per 100 miles driven. Zero-inflated Poisson regression models examined whether individual characteristics and trip characteristics were associated with KRD. Incidence rate ratios were computed. Of 405 adolescents who responded to recruitment, 151 enrolled, 140 completed study procedures, and 119 with 12 360 trips were included in the analytic sample (60 female participants [50.4%]; mean [SD] age, 17.2 [0.4] years). Adolescents drove a mean (SD) of 103.8 (65.7) trips, 565.0 (487.3) miles, and 25.1 (19.3) hours. Adolescents had minimal night trips (1.5% [192]), and few trips with precipitation present (9.0% [1097]). Speeding occurred in 43.9% (5428) of the trips and handheld cellphone use occurred in 34.1% (4214) of the trips. Kinematic risky driving events occurred in 10.9% (1358) of the trips at a rate of 2.65 per 100 miles. In adjusted models, increased KRD events were associated with handheld cellphone use (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 2.62; 95% CI, 1.53-4.48), speeding (IRR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.06-4.26), and minutes driving (IRR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.02). Trips at night, precipitation presence, licensure for less than 6 months, and sex were not associated with increased KRD events. In this cross-sectional study of adolescent drivers, trips with handheld cellphone use and speeding were associated with higher rates of KRD, while individual characteristics were not. The findings suggest that smartphone telematics apps provide an opportunity to observe behaviors as well as surveil changes due to intervention efforts.

Clinical Validation of a Prototype Smart Non-Invasive Pregnancy Glucose Monitor

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a smart non-invasive blood glucose monitor prototype during pregnancy through clinical validation. The monitor utilizes near-infrared spectroscopy combined with AI big data analysis of photoelectric volumetric pulse wave data to achieve non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose in women during pregnancy. The research team developed a monitor that employs a sensing chip, effectively overcoming the problems of weak signals and individual differences in non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. The user experience is enhanced by visualizing the test results on the accompanying cell phone APP (application) of the smart non-invasive pregnancy blood glucose monitor. Clinical validation revealed that the non-invasive monitoring data for pregnant women aged 20~30 years significantly differed from those obtained via traditional blood glucose measurement methods, whereas no significant difference ( P<0.05) was observed for pregnant women aged 31~42 years. The study concluded that further calibration of the monitor and an expansion of the sample size are necessary to enhance consistency with invasive glucose monitoring results.

An internet-based platform with a low-calorie dietary intervention improves cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese people in China: Half-year follow-up results of a randomized controlled trial.

To explore the effectiveness of the Metawell programme on cardiometabolic risk factors in China, which combines meal replacement biscuits, a wireless scale, and a mobile phone application. In this two-arm, parallel-design randomized study, 220 participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 110) and a control (n = 110) group. Participants in the intervention group were instructed to use meal replacement products and scales for weight loss and monitoring, whereas participants in the control group received printed materials containing a sample diet and face-to-face weight loss education at enrolment. The trial lasted 6 months, including a weight loss period in Months 1-3 and a weight maintenance period in Months 3-6. Generalized estimating equations were used to compare differences between the two groups. The median (interquartile range) ages of the intervention and control groups were 32.00 (28.00, 39.00) years and 33.00 (28.25, 41.00) years, with body mass indices of 28.20 (26.30, 30.95) kg/m2 and 27.70 (26.02, 29.70) kg/m2, respectively. Participants in the intervention group experienced significantly greater decreases in waist circumference, hip circumference, triglycerides, total cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index compared to the control group (p < 0.01). Among participants who did not regain weight during the maintenance period after weight loss, the reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.05). The Metawell programme of caloric restriction and remote monitoring can be adapted to overweight and obese people in China to reduce their cardiometabolic risk factors. Furthermore, there was a better improvement in blood pressure in participants who maintained the effects of weight loss.

Exploration of the Application of Modern Information Technology in the Teaching of Criminal Law

With the arrival of the information age, modern information technology is more and more widely used in the teaching of criminal law, injecting fresh blood into it and revitalizing the discipline of criminal law. However, the use of modern information technology by criminal law teachers in the practical teaching of criminal law often fails to achieve the expected results, which indicates that the level of modern information technology mastered by criminal law teachers needs to be improved. In order to stimulate students' interest in learning criminal law in the new era, teachers of criminal law need to give full play to the advantages of modern information technology, and not only reasonably use cell phone APP function, micro classes and short videos and other skills to improve the level of modern information skills of their own teachers in the teaching of criminal law, but also pay attention to the organic fusion of the teaching method and modern information technology, highlighting the key points of the teaching, and focusing on the teaching effect.

Repeatability of different mobile phone applications for color measurement in dentistry.

To assess the repeatability of various color-measuring mobile phone applications (MPAs) on dental materials in clinically relevant shades in 1-mm thickness. A benchtop spectrophotometer was used as a reference instrument. Seven MPAs were used: Color Analysis, Color Analyzer-Iro Shirabe, Color Grab, and Colorimeter from Android, and Color Analyzer-Iro Shirabe, ColorMeter RGB, and Optishade from iOS. Color measurements were performed on 1-mm thickness slices of CAD-CAM materials, Vita Enamic shades 1M2, 2M2, 3M2, 4M2, and Vitablocs Mark II shades A1C, A2C, A3C, A4C (n=10, for a total 80 specimens). The specimens were measured at three time periods, Day 0, Day 1, and Day 7, and three measurements were made on each day, to mimic short-, medium-, and long-term repeatability. The color differences were analyzed using the CIEDE2000 formula, with the corresponding color difference (ΔE00), and mean color difference from the mean (MCDM00). One-way ANOVA, Repeated measures ANOVA, and Paired sample t-tests were used for statistical analysis. Optishade from iOS showed the lowest mean color difference among the MPAs (ΔE00=0.2 (SD 0.1), 0.3 (SD 0.2), and 0.2 (SD 0.1) at Day 0, 1, and 7, respectively, and ΔE00=0.5 (SD 0.3) for all three periods Days 0-1, 0-7, and 1-7). Material-dependent variations in the repeatability of color measurements were observed. There was a statistically significant difference among color measurements using MPAs and a spectrophotometer, among the MPAs, and materials. The spectrophotometer exhibited the highest repeatability across the tested time periods. The iOS Optishade showed the highest repeatability among the MPAs.
