A New Field Kit for Bullet Hole Identification

The identification of bullet marks and holes is very often essential in criminal cases. The common methods for the determination of trace metals around bullet holes are used in the laboratory and not at the scene of the crime. The application of atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the spot test technique for the determination of lead and copper is reported. Data obtained by test firing a variety of weapons, indicated that the spot test technique can be adapted successfully for the identification of bullet holes. Subsequently, a new kit was developed that facilitates a simple, reliable, and sensitive method for identifying these holes and other suspected marks at the scene of a crime by nonscientific field personnel.

Application of atomic absorption spectrophotometry for the determination of lanthanides in ores and rare earth concentrates

Concentrations of La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Y were determined in rare earth ores and concentrates by the flame atomic absorption method, those of Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Y also by the flameless method with a graphite cell. Accuracy was checked by using a standard lanthanides mixture. The results of the determinations in concentrates (by flame and by furnace AAS, both direct measurement and standard addition method) were compared with those obtained by spectrophotometry. Detection limits were defined in a HGA-70 graphite cell with application of a standard graphite tube. The results of the examinations revealed that both the AAS methods are suitable for lanthanide determinations in the above materials. Heavy lanthanides can be determined in lower concentrations than by spectrophotometry.

This paper presents an application of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) to the determination of arsenic in biological materials.The AAS method for arsenic determination is principally based on the chemical conversion of arsenic to arsine and the sweeping of arsine evolved into a burner by means of an argon carrier gas. The effects of various factors on the determination were studied and the application of this technique to human urine and hair is discussed.The following results were obtained : 1) For the determination of arsenic by this method, no serious interference was observed in the presence of 5 μg/ml of Cu, Fe, Sb, Co, Cr, Hg, Mo or Ni, and of 0.01 to 1.0 M of NaCl and KCl. However, the remarkable interference of nitric acid was observed, while this technique was not interfered by 0.01 to 1.0 N of perchloric acid and phosphoric acid.2) The arsenic in urine and hair could easily be determined to the extent of 0.05 μg of arsenic after wet ashing by a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid.3) The recovery rate of arsenic added to human urine and hair was 92 to 104 percent.4) The interference by the coexisting substances was not observed.5) The results obtained by this method were in close agreement with those by the colorimetric method of Ag-diethyldithiocarbamate.

The use of atomic-absorption spectrophotometry for the determination of copper, chromium and arsenic in preserved wood

The application of atomic-absorption spectrophotometry to the determination of copper, chromium and arsenic in preservative-treated wood is described. The preserving compounds are rapidly leached from wood samples with a mixture of dilute sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution. Copper, chromium and arsenic in the leach solution are determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the results are compared with those obtained by colorimetric analysis.With this method an analytical sensitivity for arsenic of 0·10 µg ml–1 has been achieved by use of an argon (entrained air)-hydrogen flame and a 10-cm propane burner.

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy: Applications in Agriculture, Biology, and Medicine.

The role of trace elements in biological systems has become prominent in clinical medicine during the past few years as reliable analytical methods suited to the clinical laboratory have been developed. The beginning of modern trace element analysis was the introduction of the flame photometer in the 1940's. This instrument is severely limited in its range; sodium, potassium, lithium, and to a lesser extent, calcium, barium, and magnesium are the only elements that can be quantitated readily by this technique. The availability of the much more versatile atomic absorption spectrophotometer in the early 1960's lead to the development of methods which allowed clinical laboratories to measure a large number of trace elements with relative ease. Still, the lack of readily available literature on biological applications of atomic absorption spectrophotometry hindered its acceptance by the clinical laboratory. It was not until 1967 that slim volumes of biomedical orientation began to appear.

Determination of a Small Amount of Iodide by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry Using a Cadmium Hollow Cathode Lamp

Abstract A new application of atomic absorption spectrophotometry to the determination of iodide has been proposed. The method is based on solvent extraction into nitrobenzene of the colorless ion-pair formed between tris(l,10-phenanthroline)cadmium(II) and the iodide anion, and the subsequent determination of the cadmium concentration in the extract by atomic absorption in an air-acetylene flame at the 2288 Å cadmium line. The absorbance due to cadmium in the extract shows a linear relationship to the concentration of iodide over the range from 4×10−6 to 4×10−5 m initially present in the aqueous solution. The optimum conditions for the determination of iodide have been established, and the extraction efficiency and the effect of other anions have also been studied.

SummaryBrief comparison has been made between the alkaline cyanide and acid citrate gold plating baths. Operating conditions of a proprietary acid bath and their effect on cathode efficiency have been investigated. The low gold and nickel metal content generally adopted in these baths and the marked effect of slight variation in these metals on the characteristics of the deposit and trouble-free running of the process make regular analytical control important, as this affects economy of process and quality of product. Brief mention has been made of the application of atomic absorption spectrophotometry as a convenient means of analytical control. Plating distribution can be greatly improved by careful consideration of anode configuration and cathode jig design. The most suitable anode material was found to be gold strip, or as an alternative, platinized expanded titanium mesh. In the proprietary acid bath under consideration, carbon or stainless steel anodes were found to be unsuitable.

Phthalic acid is extracted as the ion-pair formed between bis(neocuproine)-copper(I) and the univalent anion of phthalic acid with MIBK; the copper concentration in the extract is then determined by atomic ab sorption in an air-acetylene flame at the 3247 Å copper line. Optimal conditions are described. The absorbance of the extract showed a linear relationship to the concentration of phthalic acid initially present in the aqueous solution over the range of 4·10 -6 to 4·10 -5 M. The effect of some analogous aromatic carboxylic acids on the phthalate extraction and the composition of the extracted species were also investigated.

Chemical Studies on Hot Springs (XI) : Determination of Strontium, Potassium and Sodium by Atomic-absorption Spectrophotometry

Contents of strontium in hot springs were determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. An addition of 2000 ppm lanthanum was found to be sufficient to suppress interference. Contents of potassium and sodium were determinable by diluting samples with distilled water in this method. By the application of atomic-absorption spectrophotometry to chemical analysis of hot springs, precise result was obtained easily and rapidly.
