Role of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Lung Cancer Management: A Review.

With the continuous advancements in modern medicine, significant progress has been made in the treatment of lung cancer. Current standard treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, have notably improved patient survival. However, the adverse effects associated with these therapies limit their use and impact the overall treatment process. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has shown holistic, multi-target, and multi-level therapeutic effects. Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of TCM's role in the comprehensive management of lung cancer, demonstrating its benefits in inhibiting tumor growth, reducing complications, mitigating side effects, and enhancing the efficacy of conventional treatments. Here, we review the main mechanisms of TCM in combating lung cancer, inducing cancer cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. These include inhibiting lung cancer cell growth and proliferation, inhibiting cancer cell invasion and metastasis, suppressing angiogenesis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and modulating antitumor inflammatory responses and immune evasion. This paper aims to summarize recent advancements in the application of TCM for lung cancer, emphasizing its unique advantages and distinctive features. In promoting the benefits of TCM, we seek to provide valuable insights for the integrated treatment of lung cancer.

Traditional Chinese Medicine-Based Nanoformulations for Enhanced Photothermal Therapy of Cancer.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has shown promise in the ablation of small, unresectable tumors by boosting the tumor's temperature above 50 °C. However, the high local temperature-induced cancer cell necrosis could create severe local inflammation, which may deteriorate normal tissues and increase tumor spreading. Although mild photothermal therapy (MPTT) at 42-45 °C could avoid the undesired side effect to some extent with minimal nonspecific heat diffusion, the self-protective behavior of tumors during MPTT results in an unsatisfactory therapeutic effect. Inspired by the widespread applications of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in various ailments, we also extensively explored the use of TCM in PTT and MPTT. In this Review, we summarize the application and function of TCM in PTT and MPTT, including the following: (1) TCM improves the performance of PTT and MPTT by elevating the photothermal conversion ability of photothermal agents (PTAs) and overcoming the self-protective effect of tumors, (2) PTT enhances TCM-based chemotherapy by improving the sensitivity and cellular uptake of TCM in tumors, and (3) natural TCM and metal-chelated TCM-based nanoparticles could directly act as PTAs for carrier-free combination therapy. We expect this Review will further illuminate TCM's utility and applicability in cancer treatment and create new combination strategies for theragnostic use.

Regulatory Mechanisms of Signaling Pathways in Liver Cancer Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as a longstanding therapeutic approach, offers unique advantages and potential in the treatment of liver cancer. Recent studies have highlighted its role in preventing liver cancer progression by modulating key signaling pathways. TCM's multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway mechanisms of action have garnered significant attention in the medical community for their ability to address complex diseases like liver cancer. This review examines the current status and challenges in the application of TCM to regulate specific signaling pathways, including PI3K/Akt, NF-κB, TGF-β, Wnt/β-Catenin, and Notch, in liver cancer treatment. The goal is to further elucidate the critical roles of these pathways in liver cancer progression and provide new insights into the modern scientific interpretation of TCM. Literature was retrieved from PubMed and Web of Science databases using keywords such as "traditional Chinese medicine," "Chinese medicine," and "signaling pathway." The articles reviewed span from 2004 to 2024. TCM demonstrates significant therapeutic and preventive effects in liver cancer by modulating signaling pathways involved in tumorigenesis. These pathways influence processes such as cell growth, invasion, proliferation, and inflammatory responses, contributing to the anti-cancer effects of TCM. By modulating key signaling pathways such as PI3K/Akt, NF-κB, TGF-β, Wnt/β-Catenin, and Notch, TCM plays an important role in both the treatment and prevention of liver cancer, offering a promising therapeutic approach grounded in traditional practices and modern scientific understanding.

The advancement of targeted regulation of hepatic stellate cells using traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis, which is a precursor to cirrhosis in chronic liver diseases, is driven by various factors. The activation and proliferation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are recognized as a crucial phase in the progression of liver fibrosis. Compared with western drug therapy, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and herbal medicine not only have the advantages of multi-target and multi-pathways in the treatment of liver fibrosis, but also have high safety without toxic side effects. This paper aims to compile and analyze the active ingredients in TCM and their corresponding signaling pathways that target and modulate the phenotype of hepatic stellate cells, offering a potential treatment for hepatic fibrosis. The Literature information was obtained from the scientific databases PubMed, Web of Science and CNKI from January 2010 to June 2020 with the aim of elucidating the intrinsic mechanisms and roles of TCM and natural medicine in the treatment of LF. The search terms included "liver fibrosis" or "hepatic fibrosis", "traditional Chinese medicine" or "Chinese herbal medicine", "medicinal plant", "natural plant", and "herb". We described the antifibrosis activity of TCM and natural medicine in LF based on different signaling pathways. Plant medicine and herbal formulas regulated the related gene and protein expression via pathways such as TGF-β/Smad, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, MAPK and Wnt/β-catenin, which inhibit the proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy and activation of HSCs. By reviewing both domestic and international literature on TCM interventions in liver fibrosis, this study presents a thorough evaluation of recent research progress and the challenges faced in the clinical application of TCM for this condition. The goal is to lay a solid foundation for further in-depth studies and to strengthen the theoretical framework in this field. The inhibitory effect of TCM and natural medicine on fibrosis was reflected in multiple levels and multiple pathways, providing reasonable evidence for new drug development. To make TCM and natural medicine widely and flexibly used in clinical practice, the efficacy, safety and mechanism of action need more in-depth experimental research. It also seeks to provide a theoretical foundation for future research on targeted therapies for liver fibrosis and related diseases.

Progress in Chinese medicine monomers and their nanoformulations on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) is the entire process of myocardial injury resulting from ischemia and hypoxia following acute myocardial infarction, which involves complicated pathogenesis including energy metabolism disorders, calcium overload, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has attracted intensive attention in the treatment of MIRI owing to its multitarget therapeutic effects and low systemic toxicity. Increasing evidence indicates the promising application of TCM on the protection of cardiomyocytes, improvement of endothelial cell functions and regulation of energy metabolism and inflammatory response. Although the efficacy of TCM has been well-proven, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Additionally, the clinical application of much TCM had been hampered due to its low aqueous solubility, poor gastrointestinal absorption, and decreased bioavailability. In this review, we examined the pathological mechanism of MIRI and highlighted recent research studies on the therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of monomer compounds derived from TCM. We also summarized the latest studies in nanoformulation-based strategies for improving the targeting and stability of TCM monomers and exerting synergistic effects. The aim of this study was to provide a scientific basis for the treatment of MIRI with TCM monomers combined with nanomaterials, revealing their clinical significance and development prospects.

An Analysis of the Application of Infrared Thermography in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with its long history spanning thousands of years, is deeply rooted in both cultural and historical contexts. TCM is based on a holistic view and the concept of dynamic balance, utilizing diagnostic methods such as observation, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation to assess the health status of the body, emphasizing disease prevention and the restoration of the body’s internal balance. However, with the advancement of modern medical technologies, the visualization of TCM’s effects and the objective evaluation of its therapeutic outcomes have been subject to external skepticism. Infrared thermography, an advanced medical imaging technology, has shown unique value in various medical fields in recent years. It detects the infrared radiation naturally emitted by the human body and generates thermal images that reflect the distribution of body surface temperature. This technology is non-invasive, painless, and can monitor temperature variations continuously or periodically, providing important physiological information to doctors. This paper aims to analyze the principles and equipment of infrared thermography, and to provide examples of its application in TCM in recent years, in order to highlight the potential and future prospects of infrared thermography in clinical TCM practice.

Progress in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease based on nanosized traditional Chinese medicines.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been employed for centuries in treating and managing Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, their effective delivery to target sites can be a major challenge. This is due to their poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and potential toxicity. Furthermore, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a major obstacle to effective TCM delivery, significantly reducing efficacy. Advancements in nanotechnology and its applications in TCM (nano-TCM) can deliver active ingredients or components of TCM across the BBB to the targeted brain area. This review summarizes the recent advances in nanocarrier-based delivery systems for different types of active constituents of TCM for AD, including terpenoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, and quinones. Besides, the main challenges and opportunities for the future development of these advanced TCM nanocarriers are emphasized. In conclusion, this review provides valuable insights and guidance for utilizing nanocarriers to shape future TCM drug delivery.

Large Language Models in Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Scoping Review.

The application of large language models (LLMs) in medicine has received increasing attention, showing significant potential in teaching, research, and clinical practice, especially in knowledge extraction, management, and understanding. However, the use of LLMs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has not been thoroughly studied. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the status and challenges of LLM applications in TCM. A systematic search of five electronic databases and Google Scholar was conducted between November 2022 and April 2024, using the Arksey and O'Malley five-stage framework to identify relevant studies. Data from eligible studies were comprehensively extracted and organized to describe LLM applications in TCM and assess their performance accuracy. A total of 29 studies were identified: 24 peer-reviewed articles, 1 review, and 4 preprints. Two core application areas were found: the extraction, management, and understanding of TCM knowledge, and assisted diagnosis and treatment. LLMs developed specifically for TCM achieved 70% accuracy in the TCM Practitioner Exam, while general-purpose Chinese LLMs achieved 60% accuracy. Common international LLMs did not pass the exam. Models like EpidemicCHAT and MedChatZH, trained on customized TCM corpora, outperformed general LLMs in TCM consultation. Despite their potential, LLMs in TCM face challenges such as data quality and security issues, the specificity and complexity of TCM data, and the nonquantitative nature of TCM diagnosis and treatment. Future efforts should focus on interdisciplinary talent cultivation, enhanced data standardization and protection, and exploring LLM potential in multimodal interaction and intelligent diagnosis and treatment.

Research progress of traditional Chinese medicine regulating intestinal flora in the treatment of hypertension

Hypertension is a common disease; however, it is more prevalent in older adults, and its prevalence is increasing in younger populations. Numerous studies have revealed that hypertension and the composition and functionality of the intestinal flora are closely correlated. The balance of the intestinal flora, intestinal barrier integrity, and metabolite content of the intestinal flora play significant roles in the occurrence and progression of hypertension. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive review of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for hypertension, focusing on the role of the intestinal flora to understand the mechanism by which TCM regulates hypertension through its effects on the intestinal flora. We analyzed the findings using the terms “traditional Chinese medicine,” “hypertension,” “high blood pressure,” “blood pressure,” “intestinal flora,” “intestinal barrier function,” “intestinal flora metabolites,” and other keywords from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Chinese Science and Technology, Wanfang Data, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. We found that TCM treats hypertension by regulating the balance of the intestinal microbiota, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria, reducing the abundance of harmful bacteria, improving intestinal barrier function, increasing compact proteins, reducing intestinal permeability, and regulating the content of intestinal flora metabolites. The use of TCM to treat hypertension by regulating the intestinal flora is a promising therapeutic strategy. However, most studies are limited by small sample sizes and there is a lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials. In the future, multi-center controlled clinical trials are needed to verify the efficacy and safety of TCM, optimize therapeutic protocols, and establish a foundation for the standardized and personalized application of TCM in hypertension management.

Application of large-scale gene expression profiling in modern research of traditional Chinese medicine

Large-scale gene expression profiling generates or integrates massive data of gene expression under drug induction and employs artificial intelligence algorithms for pattern matching and association analysis. This approach facilitates the identification of complex relationships and functional networks between drugs, genes, and diseases, thereby significantly advancing drug research. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), with its characteristic multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway mechanisms, poses challenges to conventional methodologies in the comprehensive elucidation of its biological effects. The drug discovery strategy that combines large-scale gene expression profiling with artificial intelligence offers distinct advantages since it does not need the prior knowledge of specific drug targets or mechanisms. This article comprehensively reviews the innovative applications of large-scale gene expression profiling in TCM research as well as the recent advancements in the development of these technologies, the optimization of pattern matching algorithms, and the construction of related databases. In summary, the integration of large-scale gene expression profiling with artificial intelligence provides a powerful hypothesis-generating tool for the modern application and theoretical innovation of TCM.

Traditional Chinese Medicine-based Treatment in Cardiovascular Disease: Potential Mechanisms of Action.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and death worldwide and has become a global public health problem. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in China to treat CVD and achieved promising results. Therefore, TCM has aroused significant interest among pharmacologists and medical practitioners. Previous research showed that TCM can regulate the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis (AS), ischemic heart disease, heart failure, myocardial injury, and myocardial fibrosis by inhibiting vascular endothelial injury, inflammation, oxidant stress, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and myocardial remodeling. It is well-known that TCM has the characteristics of multi-component, multi-pathway, and multitarget. Here, we systematically review the bioactive components, pharmacological effects, and clinical application of TCM in preventing and treating CVD.

Traditional Chinese medicine-based drug delivery systems for anti-tumor therapies.

The treatment of tumors continues to be significantly challenging. The presence of multiple modalities, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, the therapeutic outcomes remain limited and are often associated with adverse effects and inconsistent efficacy across cancer types. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of active components from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for their anti-cancer properties, which are attributable to multi-targeted mechanisms and broad pharmacological actions. Despite this potential, TCM-derived compounds are commonly limited by poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and suboptimal targeting. Currently, it is believed that advances in nanotechnology could address these limitations. Nanoparticles (NPs), which possess properties such as enhanced bioavailability, controlled release and precise targeting, have been used to improve the therapeutic efficacy of TCM components in cancer therapy. This review discusses the use of NPs for the delivery of active TCM compounds via organic-inorganic nanocarriers, highlighting innovative strategies that enhance the effectiveness of TCM-based anti-tumor components to provide insights into improving clinical outcomes while advancing the modernization and global application of TCM in oncology.

Evidence mapping of clinical research on traditional Chinese medicine in treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

This study systematically retrieved the clinical studies in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) with traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and employed evidence mapping to summarize the overall research status and deficiencies of TCM in treating IPF. CNKI, VIP, SinoMed, Wanfang, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and EMbase were searched for the relevant studies published from inception to February 20, 2024. The distribution characteristics of the evidence were analyzed and presented through charts combined with words. A total of 323 studies were included, including 295 randomized controlled trials(RCTs) and 28 Meta-analysis. The number of publications in this field rose with fluctuations, yet the proportion of core papers was low, and the research lacked the attention of foreign researchers. There were scant cross-regional collaboration between researchers and insufficient attention from relevant departments. The included RCT generally had low quality, with small sample sizes, short treatment courses, and insufficient attention to acute exacerbation and complications of IPF. In addition, few studies employed TCM alone, and the TCM syndromes remained to be standardized. A considerable number of outcome indicators were involved in the publications, while the majority of them failed to emphasize the disparity between primary and secondary outcome indicators. There were diverse reference standards for the comprehensive indicators among the outcome indicators, and insufficient attention was paid to long-term prognosis and health economic indicators. The included Meta-analysis concluded that TCM had potential clinical efficacy in treating IPF. However, the methodological credibility grading and the GRADE grading results of outcome indicators were low. The results suggested that TCM demonstrated certain advantages in the treatment of IPF, while the quality of the included studies was not high. In the future, clinical research protocols should be standardized and registered. Multicenter, large-sample, and follow-up clinical studies should be conducted. The research reports should refer to relevant reporting standards to improve the quality and generate high-level evidence, thus providing a reference for the clinical application of TCM in the treatment of IPF.

An auxiliary diagnostic approach based on traditional Chinese medicine constitutions for older patients with frailty

AbstractIntroductionAs global population ages, frailty has surfaced as a major public health challenge. Given the heterogeneity of frailty in the clinical presentation, it is imperative to develop personalised diagnostic and treatment strategies. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution offers notable advantages in discerning individual differences. This study aims to elucidate the association between TCM constitutions and frailty, providing insights into the application of TCM for the frailty management.MethodsAn observational study was conducted at Huadong hospital from July 2022 to November 2023. A total of 241 older patients were recruited. Each patient underwent assessments for the TCM constitution and frailty status. Comprehensive data collection encompassed medical history, biochemical indicators, bone mineral density (BMD), body composition and physical performance metrics. Plasma samples were also collected to detect levels of inflammatory factors and lymphogenesis‐related factors, including IL‐1β, TNF‐α, VEGF‐C, ANGPTL4 and ACV‐A. Multi‐level statistical analysis was used to establish the relationship of TCM constitutions with frailty.ResultsAmongst all participants, 54 individuals were classified as non‐frail, 90 individuals as pre‐frail and 97 individuals as frail. Regression analysis indicated that frailty was closely associated with four imbalanced TCM constitutions: Qi deficiency, phlegm dampness, blood stasis and Qi depression. Subsequent analysis demonstrated that Qi deficiency was associated with decreased BMD, phlegm dampness with elevated high‐density lipoprotein levels, Blood stasis with elevated blood glucose levels, and Qi depression with both decreased BMD and elevated low‐density lipoprotein levels. Furthermore, individuals characterised by imbalanced TCM constitutions exhibited inferior handgrip strength, walking pace, lower limb strength and higher levels of inflammatory factors and lymphogenesis‐related factors compared to those with balanced TCM constitution.ConclusionFrailty is independently associated with Qi deficiency, phlegm dampness, blood stasis and Qi depression. Personalised diagnostic approaches based on the TCM constitution may offer valuable insights for directing treatment for older patients with frailty.

Machine Learning Research Trends in Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Bibliometric Review.

Integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) knowledge with modern technology, especially machine learning (ML), has shown immense potential in enhancing TCM diagnostics and treatment. This study aims to systematically review and analyze the trends and developments in ML applications in TCM through a bibliometric analysis. Data for this study were sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection. Data were analyzed and visualized using Microsoft Office Excel, Bibliometrix, and VOSviewer. 474 documents were identified. The analysis revealed a significant increase in research output from 2000 to 2023, with China leading in both the number of publications and research impact. Key research institutions include the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Major research hotspots identified include ML applications in TCM diagnosis, network pharmacology, and tongue diagnosis. Additionally, chemometrics with ML are highlighted for their roles in quality control and authentication of TCM products. This study provides a comprehensive overview of ML applications' development trends and research landscape in TCM. The integration of ML has led to significant advancements in TCM diagnostics, personalized medicine, and quality control, paving the way for the modernization and internationalization of TCM practices. Future research should focus on improving model interpretability, fostering international collaborations, and standardized reporting protocols.

Current status of randomized controlled trials of traditional Chinese medicine in treating coronary heart disease with angina pectoris after percutaneous coronary intervention

This study systematically reviewed the randomized controlled trial(RCT) of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) treatment of coronary heart disease patients with angina pectoris after percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI). The basic elements of these RCTs, including sample size and estimation method, randomizing scheme, allocation concealment, blind method implementation, data integrity, statistical method, TCM syndrome, intervention measures, treatment course, follow-up time, and outcome indicators, were analyzed to provide reference for the design of future RCT and the clinical application of TCM in treating angina pectoris after PCI. CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry were searched for the RCT about TCM treatment of coronary heart disease patients with angina pectoris after PCI according to pre-defined criteria, with the time interval from inception to January 31, 2024. A total of 188 RCTs were included, of which 184 were clinical research articles and 4 were clinical trial registration schemes. These RCTs involved a total of 15 521 patients, with an average sample size of 83 patients and a maximum sample size of 248 patients. Among them, 126 RCTs reported TCM syndromes, the top three of which were Qi deficiency and blood stasis(38.89%), phlegm combined with stasis(17.46%), and Qi stagnation and blood stasis(9.52%). The control group received guideline-directed medical therapy(GDMT) or GDMT combined with placebo, and the treatment group received GDMT combined with TCM. The treatment mainly lasted for 4-8 weeks, most of the RCTs did not set the follow-up period or the follow-up period was unknown. A total of 160 outcome indicators were used, with the total frequency of 1 348. According to functional attributes, the outcome indicators can be categorized into 6 groups: symptoms/signs(403, 29.90%), TCM syndromes/symptoms(182, 13.50%), physical and chemical examination(468, 34.72%), quality of life(89, 6.60%), long-term prognosis(5, 0.37%), and safety evaluation(201, 14.91%). The clinical trial design of TCM intervention in angina pectoris after PCI of coronary heart disease is becoming more and more rigorous, while it remains to be improved. It is expected that more clinical trial schemes with rigorous design and taking into account the TCM advantages can be adopted in the future to provide a basis for the TCM treatment of angina pectoris after PCI of coronary heart disease.

Prevention and Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease Via the Regulation of the Gut Microbiota With Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is caused by a variety of factors, and one of the most important factors is gut microbiota dysbiosis. An imbalance in the gut mincrobiota have been shown to change the concentrations of lipopolysaccharide and short-chain fatty acids. These microorganisms synthesize substances that can influence the levels of a variety of metabolites and cause multiple diseases through the immune response, fatty acid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism pathways. Furthermore, these metabolic changes promote the formation of β-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Thus, the microbiota-gut-brain axis plays an important role in AD development. In addition to traditional therapeutic drugs such as donepezil and memantine, traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have also showed to significantly decrease the severity of AD symptoms and suppress the underlying related mechanisms. We searched for studies on the effects of different herbal monomers, single herbs, and polyherbal formulas on the gut microbiota of AD patients and identified the relevant pathways through which the gut microbiota affected AD. We conclude that improvements in the gut microbiota not only decrease the occurrence of inflammatory reactions but also reduce the deposition of central pathological products. Herbal monomers have a stronger effect on improving of central pathology. Polyherbal formulas have the most extensive effect on the gut microbiota in patients with AD. Among the effects of formulas, the anti-inflammatory effect is the most essential and is also the main concern regarding the use of TCMs in treating AD from the viewpoint of the gut microbiota. We hope that this review will be helpful for providing new ideas for the clinical application of TCMs in the treatment of AD.

Application Status and Future Prospects of Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing Technology

In recent years, the nursing technology of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has developed rapidly in the country. TCM nursing technology mainly refers to the application of TCM therapy in clinical nursing practice, such as acupoint massage, cupping, ear point pressure beans, scraping, wet compress of traditional Chinese medicine, etc. Its application can not only effectively reduce the pain of patients, but also can promote the treatment effect, help patients recover early, but also help to further improve the quality of service of nursing staff. In clinical nursing practice, however, the application of TCM nursing technology still has some problems, such as the theory of traditional Chinese medicine nursing quality to promote, “Internet + TCM nursing” is still in the exploratory stage, etc. This article mainly discusses the application status and existing problems of Chinese medicine nursing technique, coping strategies and its future prospects for related analysis and research, hope to be able to improve the quality of TCM nursing technology application in China to provide some reference and reference.

Constructing an Artificial Intelligent Deep Neural Network Battery for Tongue Region Segmentation and Tongue Characteristic Recognition

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to construct a two-stage deep learning framework to segment and recognize tongue images and enhance the accuracy and efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) tongue diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Materials and Methods: Five hundred and ninety-four tongue images of adequate quality were used to construct AI models. First, a multi-attention UNet model was used for semantic segmentation to distinguish the tongue body from the background. In the second stage, a residual network was employed to classify seven important tongue characteristics. Results: The segmentation model achieved 96.12% mean intersection over union, 98.91% mean pixel accuracy, and 97.15% mean precision. The classification models exhibited robustness across seven distinct characteristics with an overall accuracy >80%. These results indicated that the constructed models have potential applications in TCM. Conclusions: This two-stage approach not only streamlines the analysis of tongue images but also sets a new benchmark for accuracy in medical image processing in the field.

Recent advances of traditional Chinese medicine against cardiovascular disease: overview and potential mechanisms.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of human mortality worldwide. Despite Western medicine having made encouraging results in the clinical management of CVD, the morbidity, mortality, and disability rates of the disease remain high. Modern pharmacology has confirmed that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), characterized by its multi-component, multi-target, and integrity, plays a positive and important role in the prevention and treatment of various CVDs in China, which has notable advantages in stabilizing disease, improving heart function, and enhancing the quality of life. Importantly, TCM is gradually being accepted by the international community due to its low cost, high safety, versatile bioactivity, and low toxicity. Unfortunately, comprehensive studies on the therapeutic effect of TCM on CVD and its mechanisms are very limited, which may restrict the clinical application of TCM in CVD. Therefore, this review is performed to analyze the pathogenesis of CVD, including inflammatory response, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, dysbiosis of gut microbiota, etc. Moreover, we summarized the latest progress of TCM (formulas, extracts, and compounds) in curing CVD according to published literature from 2018 to 2023, as well as its mechanisms and clinical evidence. In conclusion, this review is expected to provide useful information and reference for the clinical application of TCM in the prevention and treatment of CVD and further drug development of CVD.
