Study on the Wettability and Abrasion Resistance of Ultrafast-Laser-Textured Ti Surface

Titanium (Ti) materials are highly valued in the medical field for their outstanding biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, challenges such as suboptimal wettability and wear resistance can impact the tribological properties of titanium implants, potentially leading to implant failure. This study explores the application of ultrafast pulsed laser processing to create two distinct structures, circular pits and grooves, on the surface of titanium materials. The samples underwent low-surface-energy treatment, after which the wettability and wear resistance of the textured surfaces were evaluated. The findings indicate that the textured surfaces exhibit improved hydrophobic properties and reduced surface wear. Specifically, the textured surfaces demonstrated a remarkable 73.68% reduction in wear compared to the untextured surfaces. These results underscore the potential of etching textured structures onto titanium surfaces to enhance their wear resistance, thereby offering promising implications for the improvement of titanium implant performance.

Switchable dual-wavelength mode-locked cylindrical vector beam fiber laser based on unpumped EDF saturable absorber and nonlinear polarization rotation

A switchable single- and dual-wavelength mode-locked pulse laser with cylindrical vector beam (CVB) based on an unpumped EDF saturable absorber and a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) hybrid mode-locked mechanism has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. An unpumped EDF saturable absorber is utilized to generate a mode-locked operation that generates high-order laser pulses. Utilizing a hybrid mode-locked mechanism, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and operating stability of the laser are improved compared to the mode-locked operation with a single unpumped EDF saturable absorber. Through adjusting the polarization controller, single- and dual-wavelength stable mode-locked pulses can be easily realized. The single-wavelength mode-locked pulse operates with central wavelengths of 1550.16 nm and 1549.80 nm, repetition frequencies of 6.33 MHz and 6.35 MHz, corresponding to pulse intervals of 158 ns and 157 ns. Further, the long-period grating (LPFG) is used as a mode converter to achieve pulse output with a purity exceeding 95 % in the TM01 and TE01 modes at different operating wavelengths. The proposed fiber laser with a simple structure has provided a flexible pulsed CVB laser source for laser processing, time division, and mode division multiplexing applications.

Multi-focus manipulation system based on SNES aberration self-calibration

Abstract Wavefront shaping using digital micromirror devices (DMDs) allows inertia-free focus manipulation with numerous modulation modes and high refresh rates. However, the aberration caused by the curvature of DMD affects the focusing performance. Here, we propose an aberration self-calibration method based on separable natural evolution strategies (SNES). This method searches optimal Zernike coefficients of aberration globally and completes compensation using super-pixel encoding. Compared to the genetic algorithm method, we improve the speed by 62% and achieve better-focused spots. It enables simultaneous scanning of 25 independent focal spots. This advancement supports wavefront shaping applications in optical imaging, industrial inspection, and laser processing.

Wavelength-Tunable Pulsed Cylindrical Vector Beams in a 1.7-μm Mode-Locking Thulium-Doped All-Fiber Laser

Because of the special absorption peak, pulsed lasers at 1.7 μm have been rapidly developed in medical treatment, biological imaging and so on. Introducing the cylindrical vector beam (CVB) may further promote these special applications due to its unique intensity, phase and polarization characteristics. Herein, we have experimentally demonstrated the generation of wavelength-tunable pulsed CVBs at 1.7 μm based on a thulium-doped all-fiber laser. A bandpass filter with a wide bandwidth combined with nonlinear polarization rotation technology is used to obtain pulsed laser emission at 1.7 μm. By taking advantage of a home-made Lyot filter and mode selective coupler (MSC), pulsed CVBs can be obtained with a wavelength tuning range of 66 nm (1720–1786 nm). The development of wavelength-tunable pulsed CVBs at the 1.7 μm waveband has significant potential applications in deep bioimaging and laser processing.

Proposal and Demonstration of Free-Space Optical Communication Using Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers

We propose and demonstrate free-space optical (FSO) communication using photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). Unlike other types of conventional semiconductor lasers, such as edge-emitting lasers (EELs) and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), PCSELs achieve much larger area single-mode coherent lasing, and this unique feature enables high-power (>watt) and lens-free operations at the same time. To date, these advantages have been recognized to be game changing, especially in light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and laser processing applications. In this work, we show that FSO communication can also benefit from these advantages of PCSELs; more specifically, conventional transmitters that include low-power semiconductor lasers, optical lenses, and fiber-based amplifiers could be replaced with a single PCSEL. Since fiber amplifiers usually consist of bulky components and have low conversion efficiencies, PCSELs can offer more space- and power-saving solutions. Moreover, the narrow beam divergence angles directly obtained from large-area single-mode PCSELs can also eliminate the need for lens systems on the transmitter side. To experimentally verify these potential advantages, we performed FSO transmission experiments based on PCSELs and successfully transmitted 480-MHz and 864-MHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over 1.1 m using a 500-μm PCSEL in a lens-free transmitter configuration. We believe that PCSELs open new possibilities and choices in FSO communication.

Smart laser controlling mixed-mode state

It is desirable to control the mode states of a laser to stabilize it under the influence of environmental factors as well as to tailor the laser beam. Here, we demonstrate mixed-mode-state control in a photonic crystal surface-emitting laser at the chip level by leveraging the mechanism of mutual injection locking via dynamic control of the current injection distribution. We also demonstrate smart control, in which deep learning is applied to accurately predict the current injection distribution required to achieve a targeted beam pattern owing to manipulation of the mixed-mode state, and vice versa. These results could enable smart laser sources essential for advanced laser processing and additive manufacturing applications.

Polarization Dependence of Laser-Induced Dynamics on Non-Flat Metal Surfaces: A Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Approach.

Real-time time-dependent density functional theory was used to study the laser-pulse-induced ion dynamics on metal surfaces featuring rows of atomic ridges. In contrast to atomically flat surfaces, the rows of atomic ridges induce anisotropy on the surface even in surface-parallel directions. This anisotropy causes the laser-induced ion dynamics to depend on the orientation of the laser polarization vector in the surface-parallel directions. This polarization dependence occurs for both copper (111) and aluminum (111) surfaces, indicating that the existence of localized d orbitals in the electronic system does not play a crucial role. The difference in kinetic energies between ions on the ridges and those on the planar surface reached a maximum when the laser polarization vector was perpendicular to the rows of ridges but parallel to the surface. A simple mechanism for the polarization dependence and some potential applications in laser processing are discussed.

Single-Shot Multi-Frame Imaging of Femtosecond Laser-Induced Plasma Propagation.

Single-shot ultrafast multi-frame imaging technology plays a crucial role in the observation of laser-induced plasma. However, there are many challenges in the application of laser processing, such as technology fusion and imaging stability. To provide a stable and reliable observation method, we propose an ultrafast single-shot multi-frame imaging technology based on wavelength polarization multiplexing. Through the frequency doubling and birefringence effects of the BBO and the quartz crystal, the 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse was frequency doubled to 400 nm, and a sequence of probe sub-pulses with dual-wavelength and different polarization was generated. The coaxial propagation and framing imaging of multi-frequency pulses provided stable imaging quality and clarity, as well as high temporal/spatial resolution (200 fs and 228 lp/mm). In the experiments involving femtosecond laser-induced plasma propagation, the probe sub-pulses measured their time intervals by capturing the same results. Specifically, the measured time intervals were 200 fs between the same color pulses and 1 ps between the adjacent different. Finally, based on the obtained system time resolution, we observed and revealed the evolution mechanism of femtosecond laser-induced air plasma filaments, the multifilament propagation of femtosecond laser in fused silica, and the influence mechanism of air ionization on laser-induced shock waves.

Multi-functional liquid crystal devices based on random binary matrix algorithm

ABSTRACT Multi-functional diffraction gratings have found broad applications in laser processing, medicine, beam manipulation, etc. However, based on the existing schemes there are still some challenges in fabricating the diffraction gratings with the controllable and arbitrary diffraction intensity of each order, multiple phase distribution, and polarisation of the output. Here, we propose a new phase mixing algorithm based on the random binary matrix and describe the theoretical foundation and experimental realisation of the proposed scheme. Using the new algorithm, several phase-mixing devices were fabricated, and the experiment verified the relationship of the light intensity, polarisation, phase and the algorithm. Our approach is practical to mix the phases of several diffraction gratings to realise the controllable diffraction orders, offering an innovative idea for the research of the liquid crystal phase mixing devices.

Generation of Q-switched pulses on a graphene-silica hybrid waveguide

The Q-switched laser sources on chip pave the way for the applications of laser processing, distance measurement and frequency conversion. In this work, using the monolayer graphene-silica hybrid waveguides with increased input optical power, Q-switched pulses with the pulse widths ranging from 1.57 μs to 5.06 μs and the repetition rates ranging from 47.23 kHz to 85.33 kHz are realized, which results in the maximum single pulse energy of 56.5 nJ. The interaction between graphene and propagation light in the waveguide is strengthened by coating the polymethyl methacrylate layer on the graphene-silica hybrid waveguide. The pump power threshold of Q-switching is reduced by a factor of 2.5, and the Q-switched pulses with pulse width of 1.21 μs is achieved. Besides, as the pump power increases, the Q-switched mode-locking pulses are also observed.

Highly Integrated Cladding Mode Stripper Array for Compact High-Power Industrial Fiber Laser.

A design integrating multiple cladding mode strippers used in fiber laser architectures into a single device is proposed. This approach can increase the compactness of fiber lasers, thus contributing to industrial laser processing applications. By offset-placing the most intense light-stripping parts, for instance, by inversing the laser injection directions or by displacing the beginning of etched sections, multiple cladding mode strippers bundled together into a single housing can have the hottest regions separated and can operate at full power simultaneously, with no evident cross-influence on each other. Two and three cladding-mode-stripper arrays have been implemented, and validation tests have been conducted with ~500-W cladding power being injected into each input port. For both arrayed devices, compared to the scenario in which only a single cladding mode stripper is working, no greater than a 2.1 °C temperature increment is generated when all components are operating concurrently, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the integration method. In this way, one half and two thirds of space/weight reduction can be realized, respectively, for the two and three cladding-mode-stripper arrays, which is meaningful, since cladding mode strippers are among the most bulky and hottest components in fiber lasers. Moreover, this integration provides a valuable reference for the miniaturization of other components, and thus, could contribute to the development fiber lasers with higher power-to-volume ratios, which would be more economical for industrial applications.

High-power 0.4-mJ picosecond CPA system based on an extra-large-mode-area triple-clad fiber.

A high-average-power, high-pulse-energy picosecond chirped pulse amplification (CPA) laser system based on an extra-large-mode-area (XLMA) triple-clad fiber (TCF) was demonstrated. The ultrashort pulses, generated from all-fiber mode-locked oscillator, stretched and then were pre-amplified to 10 W through a series of fiber power amplifiers. Subsequently, the average output power was amplified to 620 W corresponding to a pulse energy of 0.62 mJ via XLMA TCF. Additionally, the amplified pulses were compressed to a pulse duration of 7.6 ps with an average power of 423 W and a compression efficiency of 68.2%. The ultrashort laser is a promising light source for application of water-guided laser processing, albeit with a beam quality factor of 20 and 21 along two orthogonal axes.

Development of a Laser Scanning Machining System Supporting On-the-Fly Machining and Laser Power Follow-Up Adjustment.

In this study, a laser scanning machining system supporting on-the-fly machining and laser power follow-up adjustment was developed to address the increasing demands for high-speed, wide-area, and high-quality laser scanning machining. The developed laser scanning machining system is based on the two-master and multi-slave architecture with synchronization mechanism, and realizes the integrated and synchronous collaborative control of the motion stage or robot, the galvanometer scanner, and the laser over standard industrial ethernet networks. The galvanometer scanner can be connected to the industrial ethernet topology as a node, via the self-developed galvanometer scanner control gateway module, and a “one-transmission and multiple-conversion” approach is proposed to ensure real-time ability and synchronization. The proposal of a laser power follow-up adjustment approach could realize real-time synchronous modulation of the laser power, along with the motion of the galvanometer scanner, which is conducive to ensuring the machining quality. In addition, machining software was developed to realize timesaving and high-quality laser scanning machining. The feasibility and practicability of this laser scanning machining system were verified using specific cases. Results showed that the proposed system overcame the limitation of working field size and isolation between the galvanometer scanner controller with the stage motion controller, and achieved high-speed and efficient laser scanning machining for both large-area consecutively and discontinuously arrayed patterns. Moreover, the integration of laser power follow-up adjustment into the system was conducive to ensuring welding quality and inhibiting welding defects. The proposed system paves the way for high-speed, wide-area, and high-quality laser scanning machining and provides technical convenience and cost advantages for customized laser-processing applications, exhibiting great research value and application potential in the field of material processing engineering.

Clarification for the fields of different radially polarized Laguerre-Gaussian light beams.

Radially polarized light beams have found many applications in particle manipulation, laser processing, and microscopy. Just as with linear polarization, radially polarized light beams can have higher-order transverse modes that involve Laguerre polynomials. Fields of a radially polarized Laguerre-Gaussian light beam have been calculated before, even beyond the paraxial approximation. However, there are in fact multiple solutions to the paraxial wave equation that involve Laguerre polynomials with different properties and propagation characteristics. We therefore clarify the discrepancies among three valid radially polarized solutions to the paraxial wave equation that involve Laguerre polynomials.

Ultrafast soliton delivered by miniaturized mode-locker with MoTe2 and core-expanded fiber.

Thermally expanded core (TEC) technology is an effective method of high-power fiber lasers. Miniaturization is also a major challenge for high-power lasers. We have proposed a miniaturized mode-locker based on TEC fiber and MoTe2-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film. The proposed mode-locker is consisting of two TEC ferrules, a piece of MoTe2-PVA film and a ceramic sleeve. The length of the proposed device is about 20 mm, and its outer diameter is about 2 mm. The relations between heating time, heating temperature, and mode field diameter (MFD) have been numerically simulated. The bending loss with respect to MFD has also been analyzed. The simulation results have revealed the trade-off relation between maximal tolerable intensity and low cavity loss, which means that there is an optimal MFD corresponding to optimal heating time and heating temperature. The proposed mode-locker has been applied in an integrated fiber laser, which has emitted ultrafast soliton with 3 times intensity larger than that of conventional sandwiched-type saturable absorber. The proposed mode-locker and fiber laser will find important applications in laser processing, laser ranging, and optical communication.

Pulse-to-pulse detection of terahertz radiation emitted from the femtosecond laser ablation process.

Determining the dynamics of electrons and ions emitted from a target material during laser ablation is crucial for desirable control of laser processing. However, these dynamics are still challenging to understand because of a lack of ubiquitous spectroscopic tools to observe tangled-up dynamics appearing at ultrafast timescales. Here by harnessing highly sensitive single-shot terahertz time-domain spectroscopy using an echelon mirror, we investigate pulse-to-pulse temporal profile of terahertz radiation generated from the material surface. We clearly found that the carrier-envelope phase and the electric field amplitude of the terahertz waveform systematically vary between the pre- and post-ablation depending on the laser fluence and irradiated pulse numbers. Our results provide a stepping-stone towards perception of Coulomb explosion occurring throughout the laser ablation process, which is indispensable for future laser processing applications.

Generation of cylindrical vector beams in a linear cavity mode-locked fiber laser based on nonlinear multimode interference.

In this paper, a linear cavity mode-locked pulsed fiber laser generating cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) is proposed and demonstrated based on a nonlinear multimode interference. A homemade long-period fiber grating with a broad bandwidth of 121 nm is used as a mode converter inside the cavity. The saturable absorber was formed by single-mode fiber-graded index multimode fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) structure. By controlling the pump power, the operation states are switchable among continuous-wave, Q-switched mode-locked (QML), and mode-locked regimes. The repetition rate of the QML CVB pulse envelope varies from 57.4 kHz to 102.7 kHz at the pump range of 118 to 285 mW. When increasing pump power to 380 mW, mode-locked CVB pulse repetition rate of 3.592 MHz, and pulse duration of 4.62 ns are achieved. In addition, the maximum single-pulse envelope energy can reach 510 nJ, and 142 mW average-power CVBs with a slope efficiency of as high as 20.2% can be obtained. Moreover, azimuthally and radially polarized beams can be obtained with mode purity over 95% in different operating regimes. The proposed fiber laser has a simple structure, and the operation is controllable in both temporal and spatial domains, which presents a flexible pulsed CVB source for application of laser processing, time or mode division multiplexing system, and spatiotemporal nonlinear optics.

Mid-infrared optical switches enabled by metal-organic frameworks for compact high-power nanosecond laser sources at 3 µm.

Pulsed lasers operating in the mid-infrared are of great importance for numerous applications in spectroscopy, medical surgery, laser processing, and communications. In spite of recent advances with mid-infrared gain platforms, the lack of a capable pulse generation mechanism hinders the development of compact mid-infrared pulsed laser source. Here we show that MIL-68(Al) and MIL-68(Fe), which are aluminum- and iron- based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ordered atoms distribution and periodic mesoporous structure, constitute exceptional optical switches for the mid-infrared. We fabricated the MIL-68(Al) and MIL-68(Fe) via hydrothermal method and prepared reflection-type MIL-68(Al)- and MIL-68(Fe)- saturable absorber mirrors (SAMs). By employing the as-prepared SAMs in the laser cavities, we achieved high-power nanosecond Q-switched fiber lasers at 2.8 µm. Especially, the average output power and pulse duration of the MIL-68(Al) Q-switched fiber laser reached 809.1 mW and 567 ns, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate that MIL-68(M) can be efficient optical switches for 3-µm mid-IR laser pulses generation. Our findings reveal that MIL-68(M) is promising saturable absorber for compact and high-performance mid-infrared pulsed lasers.

Generation of a focused optical vortex beam using a liquid crystal spiral zone plate.

Optical vortices (OVs) with orbital angular momenta show promise for various optical applications. Spiral zone plates (SZPs) can generate a focused OV and are thus used in applications like edge-enhanced imaging. However, conventional SZPs have low diffraction efficiency because they operate based on amplitude modulation. This study proposes a liquid crystal spiral zone plate (LCSZP) that operates based on phase modulation and demonstrates the generation of a focused OV with high efficiency and electric tunability. The LCSZP has no threshold voltage owing to its homeotropic/planar hybrid alignment regions, and it can find applications in imaging, laser processing, and optical manipulation.

Powder bed selective laser process (sintering/melting) applied to tailored calcium phosphate-based powders

This paper focuses on the tailoring of calcium phosphate powders for their use as powder bed selective laser process feedstock. Hydroxyapatite and chlorapatite were used as starting powders for the preparation of different blends through the addition of graphite as a laser absorptance additive. A methodical study was conducted to compare the processing windows of the blends containing different amounts of graphite through the laser patterning of circular samples. It was found that the addition of graphite increases the process window of the powder blends being the powder without additive non processable. Hydroxyapatite showed a clear phase transition (decreased when using higher volumetric energy density) into other calcium phosphate phases while chlorapatite was demonstrated to be thermally stable during the whole process (examined through X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopies). In parallel, the study evaluating the powder blend composed of hydroxyapatite and graphite for the production of solid and complex parts was carried out although it required long printing times. The productivity of the process was improved by modification of printing parameters. Then, a series of solid samples were produced for the analysis of the microstructure and mechanical properties. High interconnected porosity was observed in the samples which could improve the bioactivity of the bioceramic scaffolds. A post-treatment of the parts increased their proportion in the hydroxyapatite phase and their mechanical properties. These results are expected to contribute to the application of powder bed selective laser processing of calcium phosphates powders toward bone tissue engineering. • Graphite as absorption additive improves the laser-material interaction enlarging the process window. • Laser parameters directly influence the hydroxyapatite phase transition into other calcium phosphate phases. • Chlorapatite did not undergo phase transition during the process due to its inherent higher thermal stability. • Solid parts containing a majority of HA phase in the structure were obtained although with low mechanical properties.
