Shaping Tomorrow: The Impact of AI on Architectural History and Interior Design Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have become popular in architecture and design, and several studies have focused on using these technological advancements to solve various architectural problems. AI is used in various architectural design applications, from intelligent material composition to layout solutions, and it is also vital in supporting the architecture and design education mechanism. A comprehensive understanding of literature is necessary to use these powerful tools in education adequately. This is due to the large volume of research being created and disseminated on this subject as well as the increasing application of AI techniques to address various education design-related questions. This article offers a comprehensive and critical assessment of the study of artificial intelligence applications in architecture and interior design education as a course application in the history of architecture and interior design. The study's conclusions indicate that AI's implications in architecture and design re-imagination are beneficial; however, it was concluded that AI- in its current phase- cannot replace human input and perspective. The students' feedback indicates that critical thinking skills cannot be replaced, and AI complements but doesn't replace their intellect.

Analysis of Correlation Features in Material Application for Architectural Design Based on Big Data Text Mining

This study conducted a big data mining and lexical co-occurrence network analysis on design texts sourced from architectural media over the past decade, systematically evaluating the application trends of materials in architectural design. This approach distinguishes itself from traditional case studies that rely on small samples of material applications in architectural design, thereby significantly enhancing the generalizability of the conclusions. The research reveals a 27.2% increase in the material–project frequency of architectural materials over the past ten years, indicating that the materiality of architecture is gradually making a comeback to counteract the trend toward architectural visualization. Within this context, material properties, material interactions, and material presentation in architectural components emerge as universal concerns in architectural design. Notably, the sustainability and energy efficiency of wood and concrete have emerged as pivotal topics in architectural practice, in addition to their structural functions. Additionally, over the past decade, the material–project frequencies of brick and stone have grown rapidly, with respective increases of 24.3% and 11.8%. Brick and stone primarily respond to the locality and style of architectural design by emphasizing their inherent texture and color, thereby enhancing the spatial perception and experience within the designs. This study lays the groundwork for quantitative research on the influence of building materials on architectural design, and it illuminates current trends and preferences in material application within architectural design, thereby empowering architects to make more informed decisions in their material selection.

Preparation of multistage porous polymer nanocomposites and its application in architectural design

In order to solve the problem that the toughness (impact strength) of the traditional elastomer toughening will decrease its rigidity (modulus) while improving the toughness (impact strength) of the material, the multi-porous nano-cacO3/polymer composite and its application in building plastics were proposed. In this essay, the mechanical properties of nano-caco3/PVC/CPE and nano-caco3/PP/SBS composites are studied. The results showed that the notch impact strength increased by 15.8 % from 46.8 kJ/m2 to 54.2kJ/m2 when two nano-cacO3 was added into the PP/SBS blend system, indicating that nano-cacO3 also toughened PP to some extent. ConclusionNano Ca-CO3 has remarkable toughening effect on PVC blending system, and also has certain toughening effect on PP blending system. The profile with nano-cacO3 added can ensure the impact performance of low temperature drop hammer, while the notched impact strength, tensile strength, elongation at break and flexural modulus of the simply supported beam are significantly improved compared with the profile without nano-cacO3 added. The application of nano CaCO3/PVC/CPE composites in the profile of PVC doors and Windows is studied.

Optimized Distance-Based Algorithm for Cloud Space—Tourist Route Recommendation for Heritage Town, Pondicherry, India

Architecture, often regarded as a three-dimensional art form, relies on a multitude of abstractions during the design process. In this context, architectural elements are effectively represented through vector-based data processing techniques, offering a canvas for creative exploration. To further our understanding of spatial configurations and generate multiple design insights, mathematical structures known as graphs come into play. Graph theory, a fundamental component of this process, it is a mathematical field that studies relationships and connections between objects using vertices and edges, finding applications in computer science, network analysis, and more finds application in architectural design. This study delves into the application of graph theory in the analytical exploration of urban networks, with a focus on tourism parameters in the picturesque town of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, India. Traditionally, urban network analysis seeks to determine the shortest distance between origin and destination, a metric rooted in accessibility. However, in leisure destinations, a novel approach involving an optimized distance-based algorithm is introduced. This innovative methodology aims to facilitate efficient access to all tourist destinations within the spatial extent while minimizing discrete physical distances. To illustrate this concept, we take the iconic French Quarters in the White Town of Pondicherry as a case study. By applying the optimized distance-based algorithm, we endeavor to uncover the most efficient route for tourists to navigate and leisurely explore the area. The outcome of this analysis reveals a path graph structure, which, when compared to a circular graph structure, demonstrates superior efficiency in guiding tourists through the space. The implications of this tourist route extend beyond the realm of tourism itself. It has the potential to enhance the organization of tourist activities, allowing stakeholders to manage and regulate the flow of visitors. Additionally, it presents an opportunity to promote and develop the region’s often-underestimated tourist destinations, which can, in turn, have a positive impact on the local economy. In summary, the integration of graph theory into architectural and urban design methodologies enriches the approach to tourism and offers a holistic perspective on spatial optimization.

Robotically 3D printed architectural membranes from ambient dried cellulose nanofibril-alginate hydrogel

Cellulose nanofibril hydrogel mixed with an aqueous solution of sodium alginate is a novel bio-based material suitable for 3D printing of lightweight membranes with exquisite properties and sustainable traits. However, fundamental knowledge enabling its applications in architectural design is still missing. Hence, this study examines the macro-scale features of lightweight membranes from cellulose nanofibril-alginate hydrogel, relevant for the design of various interior architectural products, such as wall claddings, ceiling tiles, room partitions, tapestries, and window screens. Through iterative prototyping experiments involving robotic 3D printing of lightweight membranes, their upscaling potential is demonstrated. Correlations between toolpath designs and shrinkages are also characterized, alongside an in-depth analysis of coloration changes upon ambient drying. Further, the tunability potential of various architectural features, enabled by bespoke 3D printing toolpath design, is discussed and exemplified. The aim is to expose the wide palette of design possibilities for cellulose nanofibril-alginate membranes, encompassing variations in curvature, porosity, translucency, texture, patterning, pliability, and feature sizes. The results comprise an important knowledge foundation for the design and manufacturing of custom lightweight architectural products from cellulose nanofibril-alginate hydrogel. These products could be applied in a variety of new bio-based, sustainable interior building systems, replacing environmentally harmful, fossil-based solutions.

Last Planner System Framework to Assess Planning Reliability in Architectural Design

The Last Planner System (LPS) aims to enhance planning reliability by reducing variability in construction processes. While LPS applications have been explored in construction and detailed design, its application in architectural design remains underrepresented due to its abstract nature. This study addresses this gap by proposing an LPS framework tailored for architectural design, utilizing LPS metrics to assess planning reliability. Key issues hindering formal planning methods’ implementation are identified, and relevant LPS principles are aligned with these challenges, culminating in a conceptual LPS model designed for architectural projects. Building upon the conceptual model, an implementation model was developed and put into practice within an architectural design company in the United States, resulting in measured improvements in planning reliability and responsiveness. Additionally, it unveils hidden challenges associated with emerging tasks, guiding future design process enhancements. This study demonstrates how tracking design planning performance with LPS metrics can promote LPS adoption in architectural design, offering a benchmark for necessary interventions to achieve desired performance in architectural design.

Investigating the relationship between three-dimensional perception and presence in virtual reality-reconstructed architecture

Identifying and characterizing the factors that affect presence in virtual environments has been acknowledged as a critical step to improving Virtual Reality (VR) applications in the built environment domain. In the search to identify those factors, the research objective was to test whether three-dimensional perception affects presence in virtual environments. A controlled within-group experiment utilizing perception and presence questionnaires was conducted, followed by data analysis, to test the hypothesized unidirectional association between three-dimensional perception and presence in two different virtual environments (non-immersive and immersive). Results indicate no association in either of the systems studied, contrary to the assumption of many scholars in the field but in line with recent studies on the topic. Consequently, VR applications in architectural design may not necessarily need to incorporate advanced stereoscopic visualization techniques to deliver highly immersive experiences, which may be achieved by addressing factors other than depth realism. As findings suggest that the levels of presence experienced by users are not subject to the display mode of a 3D model (whether immersive or non-immersive display), it may still be possible for professionals involved in the review of 3D models (e.g., designers, contractors, clients) to experience high levels of presence through non-stereoscopic VR systems provided that other presence-promoting factors are included.

Porous space — biomimetic of tafoni in computational design

Porous urban spaces not only improve interactions, but also increase natural ventilation. Weathered rocks are where porous spaces exist in nature. This paper investigates the biomimicry of tafoni, a type of weathered rock that contains pores of varying sizes. The formation of tafoni inspires architectural design, but its complex shape makes manual modeling challenging. The objective of studying the biomimetics of tafoni is to apply its benefits to design applications. Using biomimetic techniques, computation algorithms for tafoni morphogenesis are developed. This paper investigates the inherent characteristics of tafoni and reclassifies them based on architectural geometric elements. It then describes the reclassified tafoni and explains the formation process. This paper develops a 3D evolutionary algorithm and a 2.5D descriptive algorithm based on diagrams. After a comparison, the 2.5D algorithm is chosen because it is more controllable and operable for computational design. This paper also conducts experiments on the results obtained by the 2.5D algorithm to demonstrate its adaptability and architectural design application potential, as well as its application schemes in various design disciplines, including urban planning, architectural design, and landscape design. This paper proposes an algorithm that can be utilized in various fields of computational design. It is computationally efficient while retaining its biological form.

Shape–thickness–topology coupled optimization of free-form shells

Shell structures are widely used in architectural design and civil engineering. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously optimize their shape, thickness, and topology under various design constraints and construction requirements. This work presents a method for the shape–thickness–topology coupled optimization of shell structures. In this method, the shape of shells is described by the non-uniform rational B-splines surface. Both shell elements and brick elements are used to discretize the design domain, so that the effect of shell thickness can be accounted for during the form-finding process. The structural self-weight is taken into consideration due to its practical importance. The minimum thickness is constrained to improve the constructability of the obtained designs. Several numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that this method is capable of designing structurally efficient and aesthetically pleasing shells. This work holds potential applications in architectural design.

Fabricating Wood-Like Textures on Multicurved 3D Printed Architectural Elements.

Desktop three-dimensional printing (3DP) with the fused filament fabrication technique is widely employed for the manufacture of small-scale horizontally layered elements with a uniform striated appearance. What remains a challenge is developing printing processes that can automate the construction of more complex large-scale elements with a distinct fluid surface esthetic for architectural design applications. To address this challenge, this research explores the three-dimensional (3D) printing of multicurved wood-plastic composite panels that have the appeal of natural timber. It compares six-axis robotic technology and its ability to rotate the axes to print smooth curved layers in complex shapes with a large-scale, gantry-style 3D printer that is predominantly used for creating fast, horizontally aligned linear prints typical of 3D printing toolpathing. The prototype test results demonstrate that both technologies can produce multicurved elements with a timber-like esthetic.

Characteristics and Application Analysis of Building Design Based on Parametric BIM

With the rapid development of social economy, people's living standards are gradually improved, and there are higher requirements for architectural design. In this context, architectural designers should change the traditional design concept, comply with the development of the times, and apply parametric bim technology to architectural design. This paper mainly analyzes the characteristics of bim technology based on parameterization, and discusses its application in architectural design for reference.

Research on Design Optimization of Prefabricated Residential Houses Based on BIM Technology

Traditional and conventional methods of architectural and engineering design used for building informational modeling have a number of designs and updating and visualization issues which need to be addressed. In order to improve the design effect of prefabricated residential houses, this study proposes a design optimization method for prefabricated residential houses based on building information modeling (BIM) technology. BIM combines organized, multidisciplinary data to produce a digital representation of an asset across its development, starting from planning and design to building and operations. This study first analyzes the advantages of BIM technology and its applications in architectural design. It is further focused on the design of prefabricated houses, which are based on the optimization theory, modular function, modular design, and modular replacement. These are combined with the monomer architectural form, which is used in prefabricated houses design optimization of the assembly process. Furthermore, the article also focuses on the application of BIM technology in the design optimization of prefabricated residential houses, including the choice of implementation mode, accumulation of experience through the pilot, and the construction of an effective guarantee mechanism.

Enablers for BIM application in architectural design: a robust exploratory factor analysis approach

Professional architects with several years of experience in various projects have unique methods to design an architectural work. One of these approaches is to leverage the value of emerging information technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) in architectural design. Leveraging these potentials requires promoting an appropriate context for the implementation and adoption of these new technologies. In response to the turbulent and multifaceted socio-technical nature of modern information technologies and the environmental uncertainty, architects enhance enablers to advance the architectural design process. Enablers are the preeminent factors that facilitate the implementation of new technologies and contribute to the sustainable development of projects and organizations. Given the lack of dedicated studies on the enablers affecting BIM application, this study aims to identify and classify these enablers in the architectural design phase. Following a systematic literature review approach, a comprehensive list of enablers for BIM application in the architectural design phase was identified. The prepared survey questionnaire was distributed to 205 construction experts (i.e. project managers, employers, consultants, and contractors). The collected data were analyzed with the Robust Exploratory Factor Analysis method, ended up with classifying 36 enablers into four main categories: human skills, environmental, technological, and organizational factors. The findings of this study, considering the organizational enablers, recommend that the support of government officials to implement a particular validation process for BIM adoption is crucial. The contribution of this research lies in identifying and classifying enablers for BIM application in the architectural design phase, with the potentials to be applied in real work practices to improve BIM capabilities and enhance BIM initiatives in construction projects.

Based on this, this paper first analyzes the necessity of applying BIM Tech in steel structure prefabricated building, then studies the design of prefabricated steel structure building based on BIM, and finally gives the specific application of prefabricated steel structure building design based on BIM Tech.

Complementary Concentrating Solar LED Lighting Device and Its Application in Architectural Design

The shortcomings of solar LED lighting concentrators and divide and conquer power module are analyzed, and a new set of solar LED lighting devices is proposed. From the aspect of concentrating solar energy, the device redesigns the structure of the existing symmetrical inner wall lens composite parabolic concentrator (SLCPC) by comprehensively using the principles of solar photovoltaic power generation and light transmission lighting. With the assistance of an optimized coating strategy, a part of the incident solar energy is introduced into the indoor lighting (TSLCPC) to realize energy complementary without affecting the optical performance of SLCPC. Meanwhile, it adopts a bidirectional synchronous rectifier DC-DC converter with Buck-Boost as the main topology. The lighting device takes single-chip microcomputer PIC16F887 as the main control chip, which has high-performance and low power consumption. A bidirectional synchronous rectifier DC-DC converter is adopted to realize MPPT control and LED drive. The hardware design of the device is also given. In the test, although the waveform of the bidirectional DC-DC converter has some burr in forward and reverse operation, the measurement accuracy remains stable, which verifies the feasibility of the device circuit. TSLCPC has the same optical efficiency as SLCPC, and it uses escape light to improve the utilization of solar energy. The effective light-receiving angle of TSLCPC and SLCPC ranges from −30° to 30°. When the system is introduced into the buildings in Hefei, it is found that the installation angle exerts a significant impact on lighting performance of TSLCPC, and then affects the lighting performance to a certain extent. However, it is generally acceptable.

BACTERIAL CELLULOSE AS A BASE MATERIAL IN BIODIGITAL ARCHITECTURE (BETWEEN BIO-MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURAL CUSTOMIZATION).

1. ABSTRACT Recently, developing sustainable architectural materials from renewable resources is gaining great interest. This interest is intended to alleviate the drawbacks of petroleum-based materials and their contribution in the escalation of CO2 emissions causing the current environmental deterioration. Achieving sustainability through developing efficient architectural materials have been always conditioned by technological advancements and economic potential. This has affected the architectural design and construction sectors, especially in times of disasters or economic crisis, resulting in paralysis in the architectural construction and material development. These effects were caused by the capitalization and centralization of architectural construction industries. The recent trend of self-sufficiency that had first emerged in environmental activities supporting recycling, environmental purification and conservation, oxygen, food, and electricity production, has extended to cover more sophisticated products, such as wearables, gadgets and architecture. Achieving self-sufficiency in architecture is of interest to multidisciplinary researchers who focus on developing both self-sufficient systems and materials as the two main components of the built environment. Developing architectural materials aims to provide cheap, recycled, renewable, environmentally friendly, durable and sustainable building material regardless of the possibility of the autonomous production of these materials on a popular democratic basis. Architectural building materials production was always and still is considered a massive industry that is centralized in major firms and LTDs, limiting the architectural construction process to the availability of major economic capacity. This centralization had its merits in forcing forward large-scale economies and vitalizing the architectural design and construction market, but only on the large scale; however, this centralization shows its drawbacks every time in disasters or economic crisis, causing almost total paralysis in the construction industry due to economic impotence caused by different reasons. Moreover, the centralization of the building and construction industry have affected developing communities, causing economic drawbacks and creating a ripple-like crisis in housing. In this paper, the authors propose the self-sufficiency approach in the development and production of sustainable architectural material from abundant and renewable microbial agents, in order to democratize and popularize material production on a domestic and personalized basis. The current work presents Bacterial Cellulose (BC) as a structural and membrane material in different architectural elements and applications, developed through simple and domestically applied procedures in order to create distributed and self-sufficient productive units for architectural materials production. The current study aims specifically at the easiness and simplification of the production practices and procedures of the biopolymers, and specifically bacterial cellulose for encouraging and establishing the popularization of self-sufficient production units of these renewable and abundant biopolymers. In this regard, the current study is part of the ongoing research on enhancing the mechanical properties of bacterial cellulose in order to use it for structural applications, that will be further developed in terms of medium optimization, bacterial cellulose production efficiency analysis, and material mechanical and physical properties testing. The following sections will contain a literature review on the chemical base and physical/mechanical properties of biopolymers including bacterial cellulose, followed by the experimental work conducted in this paper to develop bacterial cellulose as an architectural material. The results were further analyzed through formal and structural customization proposing possible applications in architectural design.
