Influence of Soil Phosphate on Rhizobacterial Performance in Affecting Wheat Yield

As a primary nutrient in agricultural soils, phosphorus plays a crucial but growth-limiting role for plants due to its complex interactions with various soil elements. This often results in excessive phosphorus fertilizer application, posing concerns for the environment. Agri-research has therefore shifted focus to increase fertilizer-use efficiency and minimize environmental impact by leveraging plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. This study aimed to evaluate the in-field incremental effect of inorganic phosphate concentration (up to 50 kg/ha/P) on the ability of two rhizobacterial isolates, Lysinibacillus sphaericus (T19), Paenibacillus alvei (T29), from the previous Breedt et al. (Ann Appl Biol 171:229–236, 2017) study on maize in enhancing the yield of commercially grown Duzi® cultivar wheat. Results obtained from three seasons of field trials revealed a significant relationship between soil phosphate concentration and the isolates’ effectiveness in improving wheat yield. Rhizospheric samples collected at flowering during the third season, specifically to assess phosphatase enzyme activity at the different soil phosphate levels, demonstrated a significant decrease in soil phosphatase activity when the phosphorus rate reached 75% for both isolates. Furthermore, in vitro assessments of inorganic phosphate solubilization by both isolates at five increments of tricalcium phosphate-amended Pikovskaya media found that only isolate T19 was capable of solubilizing tricalcium at concentrations exceeding 3 mg/ml. The current study demonstrates the substantial influence of inorganic phosphate on the performance of individual rhizobacterial isolates, highlighting that this is an essential consideration when optimizing these isolates to increase wheat yield in commercial cultivation.

Impact of Physical Interventions, Phosphorus Fertilization, and the Utilization of Soil Amendments on the Absorption of Cadmium by Lettuce Grown in a Solar-Powered Greenhouse

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of physical measures and the applications of phosphorus fertilizer and soil conditioner on the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and its uptake of cadmium (Cd). In a solar greenhouse that contained soil enriched with cadmium (Cd) (1.75 ± 0.41 mg/kg) with lettuce used as a test plant, field experimental methods were utilized to explore the influence of physical measures, such as deep plowing and soil covering, and the applications of phosphorus fertilizer, including diammonium phosphate (DAP), calcium magnesium phosphate (CMP), and calcium superphosphate (SSP), and soil conditioners, such as biochar, attapulgite clay, and nano-hydroxyapatite, on the uptake of Cd in lettuce. The results indicated that the concentrations of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce were 1.49 ± 0.45, 1.26 ± 0.02, 1.00 ± 0.21, and 0.24 ± 0.13 mg/kg when the soil was plowed 30, 40, and 50 cm deep, respectively, and when the soil was covered with 15 cm, this resulted in reductions of 27.5%, 38.3%, 51.4%, and 88.4%, respectively, compared with the control treatment that entailed plowing to 15 cm. When 75, 150, and 225 kg/ha of phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) were applied compared with the lack of application, the contents of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce increased by 2.0%, 54.5%, and 73.7%, respectively, when DAP was applied; by 52.5%, 48.5%, and 8.1%, respectively, when CMP was applied; and by 13.1%, 61.6%, and 90.9%, respectively, when SSP was applied. When the amounts of biochar applied were 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 t/ha, the contents of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce were 1.36 ± 0.27, 1.47 ± 0.56, 1.80 ± 0.73, 1.96 ± 0.12, 1.89 ± 0.52, 1.44 ± 0.30, and 1.10 ± 0.27 mg/kg, respectively. Under concentrations of 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 kg/ha, the application of nano-hydroxyapatite resulted in Cd contents of 1.34 ± 0.56, 1.47 ± 0.10, 1.60 ± 0.44, 1.70 ± 0.21, 1.31 ± 0.09, and 1.51 ± 0.34 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce treated with attapulgite clay were 1.44 ± 0.48, 1.88 ± 0.67, 2.10 ± 0.80, 2.24 ± 0.75, 1.78 ± 0.41, and 1.88 ± 0.48 mg/kg, respectively. In summary, under the conditions in this study, deep plowing and soil covering measures can reduce the concentration of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce. The application of phosphorus fertilizer increased the concentration of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce. The application of higher amounts of DAP and SSP led to greater concentrations of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce. The application of higher amounts of CMP caused a lower concentration of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce. When biochar, attapulgite clay, and nano-hydroxyapatite were applied, the concentration of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce increased in parallel with the increase in the concentration of application when low amounts were applied. In contrast, when high amounts were applied, the concentration of Cd in the aboveground parts of lettuce began to decrease.

Reduction of chemical phosphate fertilizer application in a rice–rapeseed cropping system through continuous straw return

CONTEXT OR PROBLEMStraw return has the potential to significantly contribute to nutrient recycling and utilization, thus reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers. Extensive research has focused on nitrogen and potassium fertilizer management and the associated potential for reduction through straw return. However, the potential effect of straw return on reducing phosphorus (P) fertilizer application has been relatively overlooked due to the inherently low P content in straw.OBJECTIVE OR RESEARCH QUESTIONThis study aimed to determine the potential benefits and underlying mechanism of reducing chemical P fertilizer application through straw return in a rice–rapeseed cropping system. METHODSWe conducted a five-year field experiment in a rice–rapeseed cropping system to investigate the effects of chemical P fertilizer reduction through straw return. Six fertilization treatments were investigated: no chemical P fertilization, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 60kg P2O5 ha−1 with 6000kgha−1 straw return. RESULTSThe result showed that continuous straw return increased yield, P uptake and P utilization during rice and rapeseed seasons. According to the P uptake level, the benefits from straw return were tantamount to applying 69.8–88.0kgha−1 of P fertilizer, which exceeded the actual amount of P input (64.5–70.3kgha−1) from fertilizer and straw. Straw C input mainly increased the content of soil microbial biomass C and P (MBC and MBP), which enhanced the supply capacity of available P, thereby increasing crop P uptake and reducing P fertilizer. The rapeseed season showed a higher chemical P fertilizer reduction rate (31.8%) than the rice season (14.0%). Moreover, rapeseed P uptake was more sensitive to soil Olsen-P, MBP and MBC than rice. The substitution efficiency of P fertilizer through the priming effect of straw C was higher in the rapeseed season (7.5kg P2O5/1000kgC) than in the rice season (2.1kg P2O5/1000kgC). CONCLUSIONSOverall, under the rice–rapeseed cropping system, straw return increased soil MBC and MBP, thereby enhancing the supply capacity of available P. The C priming effect induced by straw return can partially reduce P fertilizer application. Compared with the rice season, straw return significantly substituted P fertilizer in the rapeseed season. IMPLICATIONS OR SIGNIFICANCEThis study articulately delineates the role of straw return in enhancing soil P availability and crop P uptake and further highlights the potential of straw return as a strategy to reduce dependence on chemical P fertilizers in the rice–rapeseed cropping system.

Effect of Phosphorus Application on Subcellular Distribution and Chemical Morphology of Cadmium in Eggplant Seedlings under Cadmium Stress

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a serious threat to ecosystems, and the application of phosphorus fertilizers can reduce Cd toxicity. However, the specific effects of different phosphorus fertilizers on the subcellular distribution and chemical morphology of Cd in eggplant grown in calcareous Cd-contaminated soil remain unclear. This study examined the impact of various types and levels of phosphate fertilizers on the subcellular distribution and chemical morphology of cadmium in eggplant seedlings using a two-factor analysis. The investigation was conducted via a pot experiment utilizing a two-factor analysis. The application of 0.35 g kg−1 dicalcium phosphate significantly decreased the Cd content in the subcellular distribution and induced notable alterations in the chemical morphology of Cd in eggplant roots. Specifically, the ethanol-extracted Cd state decreased by 65.45%, and the sodium chloride-extracted Cd state decreased by 64.65%. Conversely, Cd extracted by deionized water, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and the residue state increased by 6.20%, 4.01%, 20.87%, and 17.85%, respectively. The application of 0.35 g kg−1 dicalcium phosphate resulted in the most significant reduction in Cd content in eggplant and modification of subcellular Cd distribution and chemical morphology in roots.

Phosphorus fertiliser application and the subsequent cadmium input in three provinces along Yangtze River region of China

ABSTRACT This study has undertaken an analysis of phosphorus fertiliser use in three provinces from 2010 to 2020: Sichuan, Hubei and Jiangsu along the Yangtze River basin. It was revealed that phosphorus fertiliser application rate of Hubei experienced the most significant reduction, and the application rate of Sichuan was the lowest, but its yield of different crops hardly decreased. The yield for all food crops by Jiangsu was highest, indicating the importance of strong economic development on sustainable agriculture practice. Cd input for Hubei was highest. In Jiangsu, Xuzhou, Lianyungang, and Suqian are the three cities applying the most phosphorus fertiliser, which also happen to be the cities with lowest GDP. The findings of this research could provide useful insights into the current practice of phosphorus fertiliser application in the main rice planting regions of China and facilitate the optimal use of global sustainable intensification of agricultural systems.

Variable rate phosphorus fertilizer recommendations for rainfed wheat

A uniform application of phosphorus (P) fertilizers to spatially variable soils often results in under-fertilization in low P-localities and over-fertilization in high P-localities. This study aimed to evaluate the variable rate applicability of P fertilizers on a 300-ha sloping landscape under rainfed winter wheat cultivation for over 70 years. The soils were sampled (155 samples) using a random spatial sampling technique based on visual differences in soil color and topographic factors. Plant available soil P content (Pav) and other variables of soil samples were analyzed. The spatial variability of Pav was evaluated and the area was divided into three uniform zones (low, medium, high) for fertilizer P application based on the spatial variation of Pav. The values of Pav showed moderate variablity (CV= 21.3%). The fertilizer recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) was calculated for five identically-sized sub-regions. The results showed that P fertilizer rates calculated for all five sub-regions based on MAF were identical, suggesting that the MAF was insensitive to spatial variability of Pav in the study soils. Both semivariograms and surface maps of soil properties indicated a strong spatial association between Pav and each of plant available water content (PAWC) and aggregate stability index (ASI), suggesting that yield limitation casued by PAWC should be considered in a variable P-application program in the study area. A more comprehensive study is needed to evaluate the efficiency and cost-benefit economics of variable P application in the study soils.

Microdialysis probes and digital twins reveal the rapid removal of fertiliser phosphate from the soil solution with an impact on crop nutrition in the short-term

Global food production depends on the application of phosphorus (P) fertilisers, usually sourced from rock phosphate, a non-renewable resource. Optimising P use to ensure sustainable P application is necessary to supply food worldwide and to protect the environment from P runoff. However, standard models used to guide P application on fields are limited due to assumptions that fail to consider the short-term dynamics of P in the soil solution. This study combined time-resolved microdialysis sampling with 4D spatial information from X-ray computed tomography to inform an image-based model for assessing P-soil-plant interactions over the start of a growing season. The time-resolved microdialysis measurements revealed that P released from the granules is rapidly removed from the soil solution in the short-term. We demonstrate that the standard equilibrium models typically used to characterise P transport in soil are not representative of the experimental system on the time scales considered. Instead, an Absorption-Diffusion model, where a single sink term accounts for all the processes removing P from the soil solution was required to correctly characterise experimental observations. Our study provides the basis for a model which could be adapted to predict within-season fertilisation scenarios in different soil conditions, and provides a conceptual description of plant/crop yield response to P fertilisation.

They rely solely on sunlight, which is an abundant and renewable resource An LCD provides real-time information to farmers, offering insights into nutrient levels and helping them make informed decisions about fertilization.

Study the yield and quality of bitter gourd fruit (Momordica charantia) in inoculation with two species of mycorrhizal fungi and phosphorus fertilizer under different irrigation regimes

Drought is known to be the most important constraint to the growth and yield of agricultural products in the world, and plant symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can be a way to reduce drought stress negative impacts. A two-year experiment to investigate the factorial combination of mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae, Glomus intraradices, Control) and phosphorus fertilizer (application and non-application of phosphorus) on fruit yield and phenolic acids changes bitter gourd under different irrigation regimes as a split factorial based on a randomized complete block design. Three irrigation regimes, including irrigation after 20%, 50%, and 80% available soil water content depletion (ASWD), were considered in the main plots. The results showed that under water deficit stress, fruit yield and physiological (photosynthesis rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), RWC, total chlorophyll, and root colonization) parameters decreased compared to 20% ASWD, and biochemical (proline, soluble sugar, MDA, CAT, SOD, phenol) parameters and fruit phenolic acids (caffeic acid, coumaric acid, ferulic acid) increased. However, the inoculation of AMF and phosphorus fertilizer in three irrigation regimes decreased MDA content, but physiological and biochemical parameters and fruit phenolic acids were increased. In this study, the factorial combination of AMF and sufficient phosphorus improved the resistance of bitter gourd to water deficit, and this not only improved fruit yield but also increased fruit phenolic acids under 80% ASWD, which can be an innovation in the management of water resources and the production industry of medicinal plants with high antioxidant properties in water deficit areas.

Trade-Off Strategy for Usage of Phosphorus Fertilizer in Calcareous Soil-Grown Winter Wheat: Yield, Phosphorus Use Efficiency, and Zinc Nutrition Response

Although phosphorus (P) fertilizer application is widely used to improve production, irrational P application has a negative impact on the zinc (Zn) nutrition of cereal crops. Previous researchers observed and confirmed that P application decreases grain Zn concentrations and bioavailability in cereal crops. However, it remains unclear whether different P fertilizer types can alleviate the antagonism of P and Zn in the soil and grain and, thus, enhance the Zn nutritional level of cereal crops while maintaining production. Thus, a completely randomized pot experiment was conducted on winter wheat grown in two calcareous soils (lime concretion black soil and fluvo-aquic soil). Five P fertilizer types (single superphosphate, diammonium phosphate, fused calcium–magnesium phosphate, triple superphosphate, and ammonium polyphosphate, abbreviated, respectively, as SSP, DAP, FMP, TSP, and APP) were applied to each soil compared to no P fertilizer (CK). Plant and topsoil samples were collected during the flowering and maturity stages of winter wheat, and biomass, Zn concentrations in each organ, and grain phytic acid concentrations were analyzed. Grain yield was not affected by the application of different P fertilizer types to lime concretion black soil, while it was significantly increased by the application of TSP and APP to fluvo-aquic soil. The application of DAP and APP effectively promoted soil available Zn concentrations in both calcareous soils. In lime concretion black soil, the application of FMP significantly increased Zn remobilization to grains, while the application of DAP increased post-anthesis Zn uptake, thereby increasing grain Zn concentrations and its bioavailability. In fluvo-aquic soil, post-anthesis Zn remobilization and uptake were significantly increased by the application of TSP and APP, finally achieving higher grain Zn concentrations and Zn harvest index and effectively promoting grain Zn bioavailability. In conclusion, the rational application of DAP to wheat grown in lime concretion black soil and of TSP or APP to fluvo-aquic soil can achieve superior grain Zn nutrition quality while concurrently retaining high production and high P use efficiency, reducing micronutrient deficiency and further contributing to green agricultural development and human health.

Effects and regulation Mechanisms of Phosphorus Fertilizer on Soil Carbon Cycle

This paper reviews the effects and regulation mechanisms of phosphorus fertilizer on soil carbon cycle, which is an important process for soil fertility, productivity, and climate change and introduces the background, significance, main pathways, mechanisms, influencing factors, research progress and challenges. The paper shows that phosphorus fertilizer can affect soil carbon cycle through various pathways, such as affecting plant productivity and carbon allocation, soil organic matter decomposition and mineralization, soil microbial community and function, and soil aggregate formation and stability. The paper also shows that the effects of phosphorus fertilizer on soil carbon cycle are influenced by many factors, such as the type, amount, application method and time of phosphorus fertilizer, and the soil type, climate condition, vegetation type and management measures. The paper concludes that the effects of phosphorus fertilizer on soil carbon cycle are both positive and negative, direct and indirect, short-term and long-term, local and global, forming a complex impact network. The paper suggests that more research is needed to clarify the mechanisms, interactions and feedbacks of the effects of phosphorus fertilizer on soil carbon cycle, and to develop effective models and indicators to evaluate and predict the effects of phosphorus fertilizer on soil carbon cycle. The paper also suggests that rational application of phosphorus fertilizer and scientific management of soil carbon cycle are important for improving crop phosphorus use efficiency, reducing excessive application of phosphorus fertilizer, protecting water resources and soil quality, and mitigating climate change.

Influence and Role of Fungi, Bacteria, and Mixed Microbial Populations on Phosphorus Acquisition in Plants

Phosphorus (P) stands as a pivotal macroelement in relation to the growth of plants. It plays a significant role in physiological processes, as components of biofilms and nucleotides, and in metabolic activities within plants. The deprivation of phosphorus detrimentally impacts the growth and developmental of plants. However, the rhizosphere’s beneficial fungi and bacteria augment the efficacy of phosphorus uptake, participate in the molecular regulation of phosphorus, stimulate physiological alterations in plants, and facilitate signal transmission. In order to give readers a better understanding of the effects and positive roles of soil beneficial fungi and bacteria in regulating plant phosphorus acquisition and transport, this present review introduces the role and influence of rhizosphere microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) in assisting plant phosphorus absorption, and summarizes the key phosphorus transporters found in their interaction with plants. Using mixed microbial populations as composite microbial fertilizers has a positive effect on plants under phosphorus-deficiency conditions. It will be conducive to a better understanding of the mutualistic relationship between fungi, bacteria, and plants to provide a way to reduce the application of phosphorus fertilizers efficiently, and to provide a research background for the development of microbiological fertilizers.

Effects of Phosphorus Fertilization on Growth, Yield and Economic Efficiency of Cotton (Gossypium hirustum L.) under Northeast climate of Afghanistan

A Cotton experiment was laid out at the agronomic research farm of agriculture faculty of Kunduz University in spring season of 2023 to investigate effects of phosphorus fertilization of growth and yield parameters of cotton crop (Gossypium hirustum L.) under Northeast climate of Afghanistan. The experiment conducted in Randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The treatment consists: control without phosphorus fertilizer application, application of 30, 60 and 90 kg P2O5/ha. Result showed that the highest plant height (98.44 cm), Leave area index (2.78), Sympodial Branches/plant (12.88), Bolls/plant (27.66), cotton lint yield (1750 kg/ha), cotton seed yield (3979 kg/ha), cotton lint yield (182742 AFN/ha), cotton  seed yield (77964 AFN/ha), gross return (260707 AFN/ha), net return (209867 AFN/ha) and benefit Cost of ratio (6) were recorded from treatment with 90 kg p2o5/ha following with application 60, 30 and Control treatments respectively. It can be possible to conclude that proper phosphorus fertilization is crucial for optimizing cotton production in this region. The study highlights the potential for improved cotton cultivation practices and increased economic returns for farmers in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan through the implementation of optimal P fertilizer application rates.

Boosting cadmium tolerance in Phoebe zhennan: the synergistic effects of exogenous nitrogen and phosphorus treatments promoting antioxidant defense and root development.

Plants possess intricate defense mechanisms to resist cadmium (Cd) stress, including strategies like metal exclusion, chelation, osmoprotection, and the regulation of photosynthesis, with antioxidants playing a pivotal role. The application of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers are reported to bolster these defenses against Cd stress. Several studies investigated the effects of N or P on Cd stress in non-woody plants and crops. However, the relationship between N, P application, and Cd stress resistance in valuable timber trees remains largely unexplored. This study delves into the Cd tolerance mechanisms of Phoebe zhennan, a forest tree species, under various treatments: Cd exposure alone, combined Cd stress with either N or P and Cd stress with both N and P application. Our results revealed that the P application enhanced root biomass and facilitated the translocation of essential nutrients like K, Mn, and Zn. Conversely, N application, especially under Cd stress, significantly inhibited plant growth, with marked reductions in leaf and stem biomass. Additionally, while the application of P resulted in reduced antioxidant enzyme levels, the combined application of N and P markedly amplified the activities of peroxidase by 266.36%, superoxide dismutase by 168.44%, and ascorbate peroxidase by 26.58% under Cd stress. This indicates an amplified capacity of the plant to neutralize reactive oxygen species. The combined treatment also led to effective regulation of nutrient and Cd distribution in roots, shoots, and leaves, illustrating a synergistic effect in mitigating toxic impact of N. The study also highlights a significant alteration in photosynthetic activities under different treatments. The N addition generally reduced chlorophyll content by over 50%, while P and NP treatments enhanced transpiration rates by up to 58.02%. Our findings suggest P and NP fertilization can manage Cd toxicity by facilitating antioxidant production, osmoprotectant, and root development, thus enhancing Cd tolerance processes, and providing novel strategies for managing Cd contamination in the environment.

Amorphous silica fertilization ameliorated soil properties and promoted putative soil beneficial microbial taxa in a wheat field under drought

Increasing water demand from agricultural practices and environmental pollution caused by the intensive use of agrochemicals are among the most pressing issues concerning agriculture sustainability. The use of amorphous silica (ASi) as soil amendment can represent a valid alternative measure to cope with the upcoming challenges of intensifying drought stress and to decrease the need for phosphorus fertilizer application. In this study, we investigated the impact of two levels of ASi fertilization on edaphic characteristics and the rhizosphere microbiota of winter wheat through a field experiment conducted during a drought period. Since plant phenology plays a pivotal role in shaping crop microbiota, our research explored the response of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi to ASi fertilization at three distinct stages of plant growth: pre-planting, tillering, and ripening. Firstly, our results clearly showed an ameliorative effect of ASi fertilization on edaphic properties, with notable improvements in soil moisture, particularly at higher ASi fertilization levels. Secondly, we observed that ASi exerted a profound influence on the wheat microbiota, resulting in varying effects on bacterial and fungal communities. Specifically, in comparison to the control treatment, bacterial community composition exhibited greater sensitivity to ASi fertilization during the tillering stage, whereas the fungal microbiota displayed increased dissimilarity during the ripening stage. Notably, ASi fertilization promoted in the wheat rhizosphere the enrichment of plant-beneficial microbes with putative plant-growth promoting and biocontrol capabilities. Overall, our findings highlight the efficacy of ASi fertilization as an effective measure to mitigate drought stress, enhance the availability of plant nutrients, and promote the enrichment of beneficial microbes within cereal cropping systems.

Оценка питательности различных видов кормов, заготовленных из кукурузы, в зависимости от уровня химизации и почвенного покрова Республики Татарстан

It is known that from the same corn plant material one can prepare silage, cornage, flattened grain or grain for fodder. Each of them contains completely different amounts of nutrients and a wide range of gross feed units. The research results show a direct dependence of the choice of method of using corn on the zonal characteristics of the soil cover, the existing level of chemicalization and the power supply of agricultural units of the Republic of Tatarstan. It should also be particularly emphasized the high efficiency of the integrated use of agrochemicals on leached chernozems of the Republic of Tatarstan. Despite 5 years of liming, phosphorite treatment, the use of zeolite, and the application of NPK with the expectation of obtaining 35 t/ha of green mass, 10.6 t/ha of additional products were obtained, which is 34.6 percent higher than the control. In this version of the experiment, agromeliorants ensured the production of 41.2 t/ha of green mass versus 33.8 t/ha with the application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers without prior liming and phosphorite treatment in combination with the use of a prolongator (zeolite) at the rate of 0.5 t/ha. It was also revealed that for the production of flattened grain or cornage with a gross harvest of feed units of 7.94-8.82 t/ha on leached chernozem soils of the Republic of Tatarstan, which account for 83,103 hectares of arable land, the integrated use of agromeliorants and calculated norms of minerals for corn is recommended fertilizers Liming of acidic dark gray and gray forest soils with phosphorite treatment and the addition of zeolite in combination with the use of calculated rates of mineral fertilizers ensures an increase in the gross collection of feed units in corn silage from 4.22 to 6.13 and 3.34 to 5.86 t/ha respectively.

Response of the rhizosphere soil microbial diversity to different nitrogen and phosphorus application rates in a hulless barley and pea mixed-cropping system

The mixed-cropping mode of hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L) and peas (Pisum sativum L) can optimize the planting system, effectively enhancing crop nitrogen and phosphorus utilization and increasing yield. This mode has been widely applied in Qinghai Province, China. In this study, a split-plot experimental design was employed to investigate the bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil of monocropping and mixed-cropping treatments under different fertilization levels. The Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology was used for the research, and the physicochemical properties of the soil were measured. The results indicated that with the increase in the application of nitrogen and phosphorus, the bacterial α-diversity in the rhizosphere of the mixed-cropping system initially increased and then decreased after reaching a peak. The α-diversity index of soil bacteria was higher under the mixed-cropping mode than under the monocropping mode. For the rhizosphere soil fungi in the mixed-cropping system, the Shannon index initially increased and then decreased, while the Chao1 and ACE indices decreased initially and then increased. Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Sphingomonas, and Pseudomonas comprised the predominant bacterial genera in the rhizosphere soil of the hulless barley–pea intercropping treatment, whereas Fusarium, Metarhizium, and Cladosporium dominated among the fungal genera across the 12 treatments. Under the same fertilization levels, the relative abundances of Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium in the rhizosphere soil of the mixed-cropping treatment increased by 8.4 %, 7.1 %, 5.7 %, and 5.6 %, respectively, compared to the monoculture of hulless barley, with a decreasing trend as nitrogen and phosphorus levels increased. Compared to the monoculture of hulless barley, the relative abundance of Fusarium in the mixed-cropping treatment decreased by 37.3 %, 43.8 %, 56.8 %, and 40.3 %, respectively. Redundancy and correlation analyses suggested that the variation in bacterial and fungal diversity and community composition in the mixed-cropping zone due to the interaction between hulless barley and peas under different nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer application levels was significantly correlated with changes in soil organic matter, available phosphorus, and alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen.

Facilitation between intercropped species increases micronutrient acquisition and controls rust disease on maize

Context or ProblemGlobal food security is threatened by plant disease, and crop diversification often promotes productivity through reduced disease and facilitation for increased nutrient acquisition. However, whether such facilitation is a factor in disease resistance is unknown. Objective or Research QuestionInvestigate how crop diversity affects crop productivity and rust disease on maize, and whether competition or facilitation between crop species correspond with resistance. MethodsFive irrigated intercropping experiments with different fertilization and crop combinations were conducted at two sites for four years. Productivity (542 data points) and disease severity (27150 data points) of maize monoculture, maize - legume and maize - non-legume intercropping were compared. A meta-analysis of literature was performed to confirm the broader applicability of results from these field experiments. ResultsLegume-based intercropping increased the aboveground biomass of intercropped maize by 8% and grain yields by 10% in comparison to non-legume-based intercropping. Disease severity on maize intercropped with legumes was reduced by 45% and 48%, compared to monocultures of maize and maize intercropped with non-legumes, respectively. Moreover, as interactions among intercrops became more facilitative, the concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) in maize increased, and these increases were highly correlated with decreasing disease severity. The global meta-analysis was consistent with our field experiments, as lower disease severity was associated with greater intensity of interspecific facilitation or with lower intensity of interspecific competition. Conclusions or SignificanceLower disease severity was closely related to enhanced acquisition of nutrients that can enhance the resistance to crop diseases, driven by stronger interspecific facilitative effects in intercropping systems. Facilitative effects on maize was increased by the identity of leguminous companion crop species, and was increased by sufficient irrigation, but reduced by applications of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. ImplicationsOur findings identify a novel facilitative mechanism in general and advance the understanding of the facilitative mechanisms that underly disease control through crop diversification.

Root response and phosphorus acquisition under partial distribution of phosphorus and water‐soluble organic matter

AbstractUnderstanding how phosphorus and water‐soluble organic matter (WSOM) from animal manure compost contribute to root development is essential for enhancing phosphorus utilization efficiency under their combined application. This study aims to determine mechanisms underlying root responses and phosphorus acquisition based on the partially varying available phosphorus levels in root zone soil following WSOM. The plant growth test was performed using a specifically designed pot where the root elongation was guided into the soil of different root compartments with either phosphorus combined with WSOM or single phosphorus or WSOM. The results revealed high levels of available phosphorus in the root zone soil of individual plants in the presence of WSOM induced small root weight. Phosphorus concentrations in the root exhibited a negative correlation with root weight. Improved root structure development even in the presence of WSOM induced to increase uptake of phosphorus and other nutrients in the plant. Furthermore, a positive linear relationship was observed between nutrient uptake and aboveground dry weight. These findings provide pioneering experimental evidence demonstrating that root development varies to some extent depending on the level of available phosphorus induced by the combined application of phosphorus and WSOM, even within the root zone soil of individual plants. Given that plant growth varied based on partial root development even when phosphorus and WSOM were combined, this study suggests that implementing appropriate phosphorus fertilizer application while considering the augmented availability of phosphorus via the combined application of animal manure compost can promote root development and nutrient uptake, resulting in improved plant growth.
