Application of particle-size analysis in various industries

For various materials, rapid generation of results is always critical. Particle-size analysis of processing products using a laser-based particle-size analyzer is a valid alternative to the traditional sizing test. The article presents the results of studies conducted using Microsizer 201C equipment by the example of layered aluminosilicates and metal powders for additive manufacturing. The size analysis for these products is generally complicated by their ability to stick and agglomerate. Ultrasonic mixing does not harm the material analyzed and promotes uniform distribution of the sample during analysis. The results of granulometric analysis of kaolin ores obtained after different heat treatment are presented. The results of air-electric classification of metal powders obtained after vibration disintegration of metal chips are presented. The variety of raw materials shows a wide range of applications of this method in industry.

Radiocarbon dating mortar: The identification of a Medieval Irish round tower using a multi-method inter-comparative approach

Investigations were carried out to establish the chronology of a building from the city of Derry, Northern Ireland. The date of this structure, previously assumed to be a 17th century windmill, was examined by application of radiocarbon dating to the lime mortar. Multiple sample preparation methods (cryo-breaking, mechanical, suspension) were used to isolate a series of lime binder fractions of different grain sizes. Combined with sequential dissolution and subsequent radiocarbon dating this permitted a) the presence of multiple carbonate components to be identified and, b) aided by inter-comparison of the dissolution profiles and the presence of well-defined plateaus in the age profiles, those components and dates associated with the building’s construction to be resolved. Interpretation of the results was further enhanced by assessing the efficacy of preparations methods through application of particle size analysis, x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This work revealed that the building can now be recognized as the remains of a mid to late 13th century Irish round tower and, as such, the only building surviving from the Derry’s Medieval monastic era, therefore making it of great cultural and historical significance.

Análise comparativa de geocoberturas em três vertentes no Chapadão do Diamante, Serra da Canastra-MG, Brasil

O presente artigo tem por objetivo a caracterização física de três vertentes representativas do Chapadão do Diamante, na Serra da Canastra, tendo em vista a diversidade de formas de relevo e de geocoberturas ali presentes. A aplicação das análises laboratoriais de granulometria contribuiu para a caracterização morfológica dos materiais, para o melhor entendimento dos processos físicos atuantes durante a sua gênese. Foram aplicadas técnicas de peneiramento e sedimentação, que permitiram uma importante diferenciação entre as três vertentes analisadas, além da elaboração de curvas granulométricas para cada camada nos diferentes pontos amostrais a partir do peneiramento, sendo que os dados oriundos da sedimentação foram lançados no triângulo textural. Os resultados demonstraram, também, variações dentro dos próprios transectos, indicando respostas dos materiais às características do terreno e do substrato.

Quantitative laser diffraction method （qLD） is the extended technology of laser diffraction method to evaluate particle size distribution as a relationship between particle diameter and number concentration of particles dispersed in medium. qLD method can be applied to the concentration evaluations for various applications of particle size analysis for protein aggregates and fine bubbles.In addition, qLD method can monitor the time changes of concentration such as aggregation process of protein.

Effect of Ultrasound Pretreatment on Sludge Digestion and Dewatering Characteristics: Application of Particle Size Analysis

The aim of this work was to study the effect of ultrasonic pretreatment on sludge digestion, particle size distribution (PSD), and dewaterability of digestates (measured by capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF)). Sludge was pretreated with ultrasound (24 kHz) at an energy dosage of 4300 kJ/kg TS. Digestibility of sludge was increased by ultrasound pretreatment resulting in a higher specific methane production (SMP). The digestate of pretreated waste activated sludge (WAS) obtained under batch conditions presented a better dewatering performance. Digestion under semi-continuous conditions was evaluated using sewage sludge (mixture of primary sludge and WAS). In this case, digestates presented a much higher mean particle size for both cases evaluated (pretreated and non-pretreated) than that obtained under batch conditions. A wide PSD was a characteristic of these digestate samples. Flow dynamics inside the reactor resulted in the presence of high-diameter flocs, thus significantly affecting the mean particle size and specific surface area (SSA) values.

Identifying Suspended Particulate Matters in an Urban Coastal System: Significance and Application of Particle Size Analysis

In situ particle size spectra are obtained from two sequent cruises in order to evaluate the physical consequences of suspended particulate matters caused by episodic storm runoff from the Santa Ana River watershed, an urbanized coastal watershed. Suspended particles from various sources including surface runoff, near-bed resuspension, and phytoplankton are identified in empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and an entropy-based parameterization (Shannon entropy). The first EOF mode is associated with high turbidity and fine particles as indicated by the elevated beam attenuation near the Santa Ana River and Newport Bay outlets, and the second EOF mode explains the suspended sediment dispersal and particle coarsening at the near-surface plume. Chlorophyll particles are also distinguished by negative magnitudes of the first EOF mode, which is supported by the relationship between fluorescence and beam attenuation. The integrated observation between the first EOF mode and the Shannon entropy index accentuates the characteristics of two different structures and/or sources of sediment particles; the near-surface plumes are originated from runoff water outflow, while the near-bottom particles are resuspended due to increased wave heights or mobilizing bottom turbidity currents. In a coastal pollution context, these methods may offer useful means of characterizing particle-associated pollutants for purposes of source tracking and environmental interpretation.

Application of particle-size analysis in coagulation/flocculation for reclamation of a secondary effluent

Reclaimed secondary effluent is an important alternative water resource for urban areas; the particle-size distribution approach was applied in this study for purpose of screening and evaluating treatment processes for reclamation of a secondary effluent. Two particle-size analysing technologies namely (1) the laser light scattering technology and (2) the sequential membrane filtration technology were used in this study; particulate characteristics of the secondary effluent, of the reclaimed water by coagulation and of the reclaimed water by combined coagulation/flocculation were investigated. Optimisation of coagulation and/or combined coagulation/flocculation technologies were carried out with the help of particulate analysis of priority pollutants, following which studies on turbidity removing mechanisms of both processes were discussed. Comparison studies indicated that increase of turbidity removal efficiency by flocculation happened mainly in the particulate range of 0.2-0.3 microm and 5-8 microm; flocculation did not help or even slightly deteriorated turbidity removal of particles whose sizes are smaller than 0.2 microm and/or in the range of 0.3-5 microm.

The Role of Particle Characterization in Advanced Wastewater Treatment

This article discusses the application of particle size analysis to better understanding and improved design of the direct filtration process (no chemical pretreatment) of secondary municipal effluents. Particle size distributions (PSD) of various plant effluents are described and interpreted. Results from laboratory experiments are presented, pointing out a major divergence of effluent filtration from classical water filtration theory. A mathematical model introducing the PSD function into a “classical” filtration model is presented exemplifying PSD application to improved wastewater filtration.

The application of particle size analysis to the aggregation of Chinese hamster cells by concanavalin A

A Coulter counter and pulse height analyser has been used to study the aggregation of Chinese hamster cells in the presence of concanavalin A (ConA). After incubation of cell suspensions with ConA under standard conditions of agitation equilibrium aggregate size distribution curves are obtained which show that there is a greater proportion of larger aggregates formed than during aggregation in the absence of the lectin. At equilibrium there is a significant population of single cells. The mean number of cells per aggregate increases with temperature and goes through a maximum as a function of ConA concentration. The kinetics of the aggregation process exhibit features consistent with a bridging mechanism of aggregation mediated by the lectin and leading to an enhanced cellular adhesiveness but his process is superimposed on aggregation arising as a result of the inherent adhesiveness of the cells.

Platelet estimation in whole blood

An application of particle size analysis is described for the estimation of platelet counts in whole blood based on a variable size threshold and baseline. The simplicity of the sample preparation for this technique may enable its automation as a semiquantitative screening method. Platelets, defined as particles to the platelet side and above the minimum point between the platelet and red cell distributions were counted on specially designed electronics. The system divides the normal size distribution from the smallest platelet to the smallest red cell into four equal windows and performs three integrations to calculate the best result.

Applications of particle size analysis in the pharmaceutical industry.

Recent innovations in equipment for particle size analysis have enabled complete particle size distributions of fine powders to be obtained both cheaply and rapidly. This development has enabled applications, which previously would have been of only academic interest, to be developed as practical methods for routine use in the pharmaceutical industry. Four applications of particle size analysis based on a Model TA Coulter counter are described: (1) the detection of fluctuations in the process variables of a batch crystallisation process; (2) close control of pharmaceutical grinding; (3) evaluation of the particle size distribution of the disintegration products of tablets; and (4) the assay of the percentage of amorphous insulin in Insulin Zinc Suspension.
