The comparison and processing of Electromyography (EMG) signals under different actions

The experiment first investigates the working principle and the applications of Electromyography (EMG). Then, the effect of electrode location and electrode size on the EMG signal is explored by the raw data and theory. The reasons for choosing generic surface Ag/AgCl adhesive electrodes are also described. After obtaining the raw EMG signals, suitable data processing methods, such as Root Mean Square (RMS) and digital filtering are applied to generate signals that can drive the motor of a prosthetic arm. The results obtained by the two methods are also compared, where RMS can provide larger peak and mean values, and the digital filtering method can minimise the phase shift. Finally, the limitations of the EMG for prostheses are also analysed by three aspects: different flexion forces, individual finger motion and different reference locations.

Micro-fabrication Based Epidermal E-tattoo with Conformability and Sensitivity as Human-Machine Interface

To fulfill intelligent human-machine interface, the crucial information about the human health condition tends to be acquired with great sensitivity, stability and durability. Despite some remarkable progress for the bioelectric signal perception in recent years, the epidermal electrode still suffers from the motion artifacts, inability and sweat permeability. So the evolution of high-performance epidermal electrode has been the research focus and receives much attention in recent years. To satisfy the growing pursuit for smarter sensing, this article proposes a cost-effective strategy to fabricate e-tattoo epidermal electrode for acquisition of the epidermal bioelectric signal and provides demonstrations of electrocardiograph and electromyography applications. The maximum current change is only 1.6% in the 3-dimensional strain electrical test, and the maximum strain range could reach 40% for a normal usage. The mechanism relies upon conformal contact between the electrode and skin texture with ultra-thin process scale, which makes the device achieves high sensitivity and durability in a human-machine interface. The gesture recognition and wearable device demonstration further concludes by discussing the outlook and current challenges of these technologies as a human-machine interface and bring up the potential of clinical application.

A Review: Clinical Application of Electromyography in Abdominal Organs’ Smooth Muscle Diseases

Introduction: Lesions in abdominal organs’ smooth muscles would obstruct organs from regular functions and lead to diseases. In regarding improve the precision of diagnosis with minimal suffering, electromyography (EMG) is developed to monitor smooth muscle activity and instruct diagnosis. Aim: This review aims to summarize and analyse past literature to discuss the present progress of EMG development and clinical application in monitoring abdominal organs’ smooth muscle diseases, focusing on the uterus, urinary system, and gastrointestinal tract. Results: EMG is a reliable tool to monitor smooth muscle activity based on the propagation of action potential with minimal lesions to the human body. Accuracy and the ability to automatically analyse signals are essentials for present EMG development, where some deficiencies can be complemented by other approaches. Significance: This review describes how EMG is currently applied in clinical studies to help diagnose and establish a better understanding of abdominal organs’ smooth muscle diseases. The findings will help future research workers to review the present advantages and disadvantages of EMG, and thus improve its accuracy and efficiency. The review also indicates the application of EMG can be extended onto other organs such as the gallbladder, which serves as a new direction to work with.

ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT INJURIES OF BASKETBALL PLAYERS BASED ON SURFACE ELECTROMYOGRAPHY

ABSTRACT Assessing the performance of basketball players is very important in the implementation of technical training programs. The application of electromyography (EMG) in basketball players is still relatively small. The evaluation of athletes’ muscle state index by EMG can guide sports training. This study used surface electromyography to test and compare EMG data, analyze muscle discharge timing, contribution rate and integral EMG value of the turning movement, aiming to explore the prevention mechanism of different types of injury affecting basketball players. The synchronous measurement model of EMG signal and plantar pressure curve in jump shot process of basketball players is established to deepen coaches’ understanding of jump shot movement rules and guide athletes to conduct scientific jump shot training. The research shows that the incidence of knee joint injury is relatively high in basketball players. Patella strain and softening, knee meniscus injury and cruciate ligament injury are the main types of injury, and there is no difference between genders.

Application of electromyography (EMG) in food texture evaluation of different Indian sweets

The present study was undertaken to correlate surface electromyography variables acquired during chewing of different Indian sweets with the instrumental texture parameters and their sensory attributes. Firstly, a comparison of acquired absolute EMG variables with the relative EMG variables was conducted. The results revealed that the relative EMG mastication parameters can effectively distinguish different textured food products by eliminating the subject variance. Then, the two different recordings of masticatory parameters in an EMG session for human subjects were correlated to investigate the reproducibility of chewing patterns. The correlation coefficients were found to be statistically significant (p less than 0.05) indicating highly reproducible chewing behaviour within a session for human subjects. Finally, acquired surface EMG variables were clustered into six representative variables using dendrograms. The principal component analysis conducted for these representative variables could explain 76% of cumulative proportion of variance. The scores of first principal component correlated significantly with instrumental and sensory hardness and sensory stickiness, while scores of second component correlated with sensory stickiness.

Exploring the Relation Between EMG Pattern Recognition and Sampling Rate Using Spectrogram

The application of electromyography (EMG) has shown great success in rehabilitation engineering. With the existing multiple-channel EMG recording system, the detection and classification of EMG pattern have become viable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between sampling rate and EMG pattern recognition by using spectrogram. The features are extracted from spectrogram coefficients and the principal component analysis is applied for dimensionality reduction. In addition, the optimal Hanning window size is identified and selected before performance evaluation. For noise evaluation, the additive white Gaussian noise (AGWN) is added to the EMG signal at 30, 25, 20 dB SNR. The results illustrated that the 512 Hz sampling rate can maintain a small decrement of 0.76% accuracy compared to 1024 Hz. However, when the AGWN is added, the 256 and 512 Hz sampling rates showed a greater reduction in overall classification performance. For a lower SNR, the gaps in classification accuracy between 1024 Hz, 512 Hz and 256 Hz sampling rates are obviously presented. It signifies that reducing the sampling rate lower than 1024 Hz might not be a good choice since the noise and artifact have to be taken into consideration in a real system.

Application of electromyography combined with magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of brachial plexus injury in newborns

Objective To investigate the characteristics of electromyography(EMG) and MRI in the diagnosis of brachial plexus injury in newborns. Methods First, the EMG examination was conducted in 30 newborns with brachial plexus injury, where the brachial plexus of the five major nerve conduction and muscle EMG activity were measured.Second, the brachial plexus MRI was conducted to compare with the first examination. Results EMG revealed that 25 cases of upper and middle trunk palsy(83.3%), 4 cases of total plexus palsy(13.3%) and 1 case of lower trunk palsy(3.3%) in the 30 cases, as well as 6 cases of plexus pre-ganglionic injury(20.0%), 7 cases of complete injury(23.3%), 23 cases of incomplete injury(76.7%). MRI showed that 5 cases of upper and middle trunk palsy(16.7%), 1 case of total plexus palsy(3.3%), 1 case of lower trunk palsy(3.3%), and 7 cases of plexus pre-ganglionic injury(23.3%)in the whole 30 cases. Conclusion EMG and MRI are both helpful to localize the brachial plexus injury.But EMG performs better compared with MRI towards the slight incomplete injury.Therefore, the combination of both methods can provide an accurate guidance for diagnosis. Clinical Practice: Spasmodic Dysphonia and Vocal Tremor

Abstract The Laryngeal Movement Disorder Clinic (LMDC) was started in 1990 in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa. This specialized subset of the general Voice Clinic ( http://www.healthcare.uiowa.edu/otolaryngology/protocols/Parts/Part1/Part1C/P1C1.htm ) is scheduled twice a month for patients with laryngeal movement disorders such as spasmodic dysphonia (SD), vocal tremor, muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), and vocal fold paralysis (VCP). Patients with other craniocervical dystonias also may be seen in this clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to provide specialized diagnostic assessments and treatments. Application of electromyography for diagnosis as well as for directed botulinum toxin injections dominates the practice of this clinic. Voice therapy also is directed through this clinic, with coordination through practitioners in the University of Iowa system or, more commonly, with practitioners who are located closer to the patients' homes. It is the purpose of this article to describe the clinical pathways for patients who are seen at the LMDC from a multidisciplinary perspective. This summary will include aspects of differential diagnosis and clinical history taking, assessment, and treatment for those with laryngeal movement disorders.

Application of Electromyography and Electromyographic Biofeedback in Music Performance Research: A Review of the Literature since 1985

The diagnostic application of electromyography (EMG) and the combination of EMG and clinical biofeedback (EMG-BF) have been shown to be effective in the assessment and management of muscle tension in a wide range of activities, including sports as well as music. However, not all applications of EMG-BF have been found to be successful; indeed, some of the early reports of the benefits have been debated and disputed since the earliest applications of the technology. It is the purpose of this paper to glean a profile of research applying EMG and EMG-BF to music performance since approximately 1985--the year of my own work in this area.

REPRODUCIBILITY OF EMG SIGNALS AND GAIT ANALYSIS DATA INTHE HIP SURROUNDING MUSCULATURE

973 The reproducibility of measurements is a problem which recurs constantly in the application of electromyography and gait analysis, but which is frequently ignored. Many scientific studies which address the repetitiveness of measuring methods are, moreover, incorrectly interpreted, usually due to a confusing correlation coefficient. For this reason, this study determined the reporducibility of EMG signals (surface EMG, NORAXON) of the surrounding muscles (M. glutaeus med; M. adductor magn.) during isokinetic measuring methods in the hip joint and gait analysis data (ultrasoundtopometric device, ZEBRIS) according to the statistical method described by BLAND and ALTMANN(Lancet 1986). In this study, 15 woman and men between 45 and 68 years of age underwent isometric, concentric and eccentric muscle exercise in a test-retest procedure using isokinetic LIDO-ACTIVE equipment with EMG-measurement and a gait test on teadmill. The reproducibility of EMG signals during strength measurements must be rated unsatisfactory, since adequate reproducibility is given only in abduction/adduction movements in concentric mode, not in isometric and eccentric mode. The fixation of the probands on the isokinetic device is the main problem, also the replacement of the EMG-electrodes. The results of the gait data show generally satisfactory reproducibility, especially for the stance phase and the hip and knee angle.

Applications of electromyography in the throwing shoulder.

In the complex movement that makes up the baseball pitch, shoulder motion is a single link in an orderly chain of events. It can be argued, though, that herein lies the weakest link and by far the most commonly affected cog in the spectrum of overuse injuries in pitchers. Just why the shoulder receives the brunt of the stress has been the subject of numerous studies in the past several years. The tools of choice in many of these articles have been electromyography and high speed photography which have enabled researchers to study dynamically the phases of the pitch and the sequential firing of the muscles involved. With this information and the knowledge gained from studies looking at muscle activity during specific exercises, the clinician should be able to tailor a rehabilitation program that meets the needs of his or her patient. What has been learned from these articles as applied to the biomechanics of the pitch and the rehabilitation of the athlete who throws and the limitations of this form of study need to be clarified.

Clinical application of neuromuscular electrophysiology in the dog: a review.

A review of the literature concerning the application of electromyography and electroneurography in canine neurology is presented. Measurements of amplitude and duration of motor unit potentials in normal dogs varied largely in the various reports. It was therefore concluded that these measurements are of limited clinical value. The results of motor and sensory nerve conduction studies in normal dogs are summarised. The differences between the methods used are discussed. It is concluded that variations in reported normal values are due mainly to differences in method. The application of electromyography and electroneurography in neuromuscular disorders in the dog is systematically presented, based upon the reported diagnoses. The considerable number of first descriptions of newly-recognised and described neuromuscular diseases appears to be related to the introduction of neuromuscular electrophysiology into veterinary medicine.

Clinical application of electromyography in vocal fold mobility disorders.

Some salient problems concerning the diagnosis and prognosis of vocal fold mobility disturbances are briefly outlined. The application of laryngeal electromyography in such cases is recommended. A brief review of EMG findings in the normal and diseased neuro-muscular system is given. In the present study electromyographic investigations of the laryngeal muscles were made of 13 patients (5 males and 8 females) with ages ranging from 22 to 70 years. Their clinical diagnoses included a variety of etiological factors. The posterior crico-arytenoid, thyro-arytenoid and crico-thyroid muscles were routinely examined. A method for the performance of these tests, in the form of an initial sitting and repeated follow-up control studies, is given. The clinical versus EMG findings are analysed. The criteria of neuropathic changes in laryngeal electromyograms are described and their significance is discussed.
