Longitudinal Retrospective Study of a Wearable NMES System to Determine the Effects on Arm Usage in Hemiparetic and Hemiplegic Patients

ABSTRACT Introduction Brain disorders such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, cerebral palsy (CP), and surgical interventions can result in aberrant motor function in the contralateral limbs, resulting in paralysis, weakness, and/or spasticity. It is known that, in the short term, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), the application of low-level electrical currents to motor nerves to induce muscle contractions in paralyzed muscles, can stimulate affected muscle groups and increase arm mobility. However, there remains a paucity of longitudinal evidence examining NMES-mediated improvements of arm usage. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a long-term BioSleeve intervention on the recovery of arm mobility in hemiparetic patients. Study Design The design of this study is a retrospective cohort study. Methods We examined self-reported arm usage in patients with 1) TBI, 2) stroke, 3) hemispherectomy, or 4) CP who wore Axiobionics’ BioSleeve NMES device and compared this to arm usage achieved from years of conventional therapy. Results The device was well-tolerated. Patients reported an average increase in arm usage from 9.9% to 43.5%, with the TBI subcohort reporting a consistent increase in arm usage of 5.7% per year over the treatment period. Conclusions This study supports the literature suggesting that longitudinal NMES can be used to increase arm usage in hemiplegic patients. Clinical Relevance Statement This study supports the use of wearable NMES intervention in the treatment of arm hemiparesis.

Mechanism of Electropulsing Treatment Technology for Flow Stress of Metal Material: A Review

Residual stress is caused by non–uniform deformation caused by non–uniform force, heat and composition, which is of great significance in engineering applications. It is assumed that the residual stress is always the upper limit of the elastic limit, so the reduction of the flow stress will reduce the residual elastic stress. It is particularly important to control the flow stress in metal materials. Compared with traditional methods, the use of electropulsing treatment (EPT) technology stands out due to its energy–efficient, highly effective, straightforward and pollution–free characteristics. However, there are different opinions about the mechanism of reducing flow stress through EPT due to the conflation of the effects from pulsed currents. Herein, a clear correlation is identified between induced stress levels and the application of pulsed electrical current. It was found that the decrease in flow stress is positively correlated with the current density and the duration of electrical contact and current action time. We first systematically and comprehensively summarize the influence mechanisms of EPT on dislocations, phase, textures and recrystallization. An analysis of Joule heating, electron wind effect, and thermal–induced stress within metal frameworks under the influence of pulsed currents was conducted. And the distribution of electric, thermal and stress fields under EPT are discussed in detail based on a finite element simulation (FES). Finally, some new insights into the issues and challenges of flow stress drops caused by EPT are proposed, which is critically important for advancing related mechanism research and the revision of theories and models.

In situ tip-guided growth of nickel nanostructures through the application of electric current

Directional growth of individual nickel nanostructures guided by a nanoindentation tip was accomplished by in situ scanning electron microscopy. Agglomerates of nickel nanoparticles supported by nickel micropillars were electrically contacted with a conductive nanoindenter. Application of an electric bias led to dielectric breakdown of native surface oxide layers covering the nanoparticles and caused the formation of conductive pathways through particle agglomerates. Joule heating and mechanical retraction of the nanoindenter enabled growth of elongated nickel nanostructures through solid-state diffusion. Finite element modeling was used to estimate the amount of Joule heating and confirmed the activation of several mass transport mechanisms. The results of this study propose the ability of tip-guided growth of individual nanostructures with complex geometries and unprecedented feature sizes.Graphical abstract

Changes in the Sprint, Vertical Jump and Quadriceps Strength after a Capacitive Resistive Electric Transfer Therapy Intervention-A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Generating large mechanical power during actions such as sprinting or jumping is a crucial factor in many sports. These types of actions require a good warm-up activation. Capacitive-Resistive Electric Transfer (CRET) is a non-invasive therapy based on the application of radio frequency electric currents within the range of 300 kHz-1.2 MHz to accelerate tissue metabolic activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adding CRET to an active warm-up protocol in young adult athletes. For the double-blind randomized clinical trial, 60 healthy athletes were recruited and divided into an Experimental group (EG) and a Sham group (SG). EG received a CRET protocol in addition to an active warm-up. SG carried out the same warm-up but with a placebo CRET. The main outcome measures were isometric extension force, countermovement-jump (CMJ), 30 m-sprint test, and surface electromyography (sEMG). There is no statistically significant interaction (group-time) for any of the variables studied. Significant main effects for time were found in isometric extension force (p = 0.008); 30 m sprint (p = 0.017); rectus femoris sEMG during CMJ (p = 0.002); vastus lateralis sEMG during CMJ (p = 0.012); vastus medialis during CMJ (p = 0.010) and rectus femoris sEMG during the 30 m sprint test (p = 0.012). Non-significant differences between means are observed in the isometric extension force (48.91 EG; 10.87 SG) and 30 m sprint (-0.13 EG; -0.04 SG) variables. To conclude, a non-significant tendency was observed in sprint and quadriceps strength following CRET therapy, compared to the individuals' pre-treatment state. Future research should use more treatment sessions to observe this tendency.

Electrical current disrupts the electron transfer in defined consortia.

Improving methane production through electrical current application to anaerobic digesters has garnered interest in optimizing such microbial electrochemical technologies, with claims suggesting direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) at the cathode enhances methane yield. However, previous studies with mixed microbial communities only reported interspecies interactions based on species co-occurrence at the cathode, lacking insight into how a poised cathode influences well-defined DIET-based partnerships. To address this, we investigated the impact of continuous and discontinuous exposure to a poised cathode (-0.7 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode) on a defined consortium of Geobacter metallireducens and Methanosarcina barkeri, known for their DIET capabilities. The physiology of DIET consortia exposed to electrical current was compared to that of unexposed consortia. In current-exposed incubations, overall metabolic activity and cell numbers for both partners declined. The consortium, receiving electrons from the poised cathode, accumulated acetate and hydrogen, with only 32% of the recovered electrons allocated to methane production. Discontinuous exposure intensified these detrimental effects. Conversely, unexposed control reactors efficiently converted ethanol to methane, transiently accumulating acetate and recovering 88% of electrons in methane. Our results demonstrate the overall detrimental effect of electrochemical stimulation on a DIET consortium. Besides, the data indicate that the presence of an alternative electron donor (cathode) hinders efficient electron retrieval by the methanogen from Geobacter, and induces catabolic repression of oxidative metabolism in Geobacter. This study emphasizes understanding specific DIET-based interactions to enhance methane production during electrical stimulation, providing insights for optimizing tailored interspecies partnerships in microbial electrochemical technologies.

Energetic perspective on emergent inductance exhibited by magnetic textures in the pinned regime

Spatially varying magnetic textures can exhibit electric-current-induced dynamics as a result of the spin-transfer torque effect. When such a magnetic system is electrically driven, an electric field is generated, which is called the emergent electric field. In particular, when magnetic-texture dynamics are induced under the application of an AC electric current, the emergent electric field also appears in an AC manner, notably, with an out-of-phase time profile, thus exhibiting inductor behavior, often called an emergent inductor. Here we show that the emergent inductance exhibited by magnetic textures in the pinned regime can be explained in terms of the current-induced energy stored in the magnetic system. We numerically find that the inductance values defined from the emergent electric field and the current-induced magnetization-distortion energy, respectively, are in quantitative agreement in the so-called adiabatic limit. Our findings indicate that emergent inductors retain the basic concept of conventional inductors; that is, the energy is stored under the application of electric current.

Electrochemical promoted dry methane reforming for power and syngas co-generation in solid oxide fuel cells: Experiments, modelling and optimizations

The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) combining dry methane reforming (DMR) is an efficient electrochemical power generation device that simultaneously converts greenhouse gases (methane and CO2) into syngas and produces electricity power. The electrochemical promotion of catalysis effect (EPOC) in SOFC is known to be promising for enhancing the syngas conversion e.g. dry methane reforming reaction upon application of electrical currents or potentials. However, traditional DMR catalytic kinetic models were developed from heterogeneous catalysis experimental data, neglecting the EPOC effect and thus fail to accurately predict the DMR catalytic kinetics in SOFC. This study experimentally investigated the EPOC effect on the DMR reaction during SOFC operation, and proposes a machine learning-based predictive model using multiswarm particle swarm optimization algorithm (MSPSO) and back propagating (BP) neural network for the accurate prediction of catalysis performance in DMR-SOFCs under the EPOC. Key parameters including molar flow rate, reaction temperature, and electrical potentials are used as input parameters and CH4/CO2 conversion as output in the predictive model. The MSPSO-BP model exhibits high prediction accuracy with the average error of predicted CH4/CO2 conversion less than 5 %, and the coefficient of determination (R2) values are 0.971 and 0.968. respectively. Sensitivity analysis through the response surface method (RSM) reveals that temperature and electrical potentials are the most important parameters affecting dry methane reforming performance under EPOC. The developed model in this work is the first machine learning-based predictive model for DMR-SOFCs with a focus on EPOC effect and co-generation performance, providing a valuable tool for the optimization and design of future efficient DMR-SOFCs systems.

NiSi: New Venue for Antiferromagnetic Spintronics.

Envisaging antiferromagnetic spintronics pivots on two key criteria of high transition temperature and tuning of underlying magnetic order using straightforward application of magnetic field or electric current. Here, weshow that NiSi metal can provide suitable new platform in this quest. First, ourstudy unveils high temperature antiferromagnetism in single crystal NiSi with TN ⩾ 700 K. Antiferromagnetic order in NiSi is accompanied by the non-centrosymmetric magnetic character with small ferromagnetic component in a-c plane. Second, wefind that NiSi manifests distinct magnetic and electronic hysteresis responses to field applications due to the disparity in two moment directions. While magnetic hysteresis is characterized by one-step switching between ferromagnetic states of uncompensated moment, electronic behavior is ascribed to metamagnetic switching phenomena between non-collinear spin configurations. Importantly, the switching behaviors persist to high temperature. The properties underscore the importance of NiSi in the pursuit of antiferromagneticspintronics. Microvalve-Based Tunability of Electrically Driven Ion Transport through a Microfluidic System with an Ion-Exchange Membrane.

Microfluidic channels with an embedded ion permselective medium under the application of electric current are commonly used for electrokinetic processes as on-chip ion concentration polarization (ICP) and bioparticle preconcentration to enhance biosensing. Herein, we demonstrate the ability to dynamically control the electrically driven ion transport by integrating individually addressable microvalves. The microvalves are located along a main microchannel that is uniformly coated with a thin layer of an ion-exchange membrane (IEM). The interplay of ionic transport between the solution within the microchannel and the thin IEM, under an applied electric current, can be locally tuned by the deformation of the microvalve. This tunability provides a robust and simple means of implementing new functionalities into lab-on-a-chip devices, e.g., dynamic control over multiple ICP layers and their associated preconcentrated molecule plugs, multiplex sensing, suppression of biofouling, and plug dispersion, while maintaining the well-known application of microvalves as steric filtration.

Thermo-electro-mechanical aging and degradation of conductive 3D printed PLA/CB composite

Conductive polymeric composites consist of a polymeric matrix filled with conductive particles, providing electrical properties to a naturally insulating material. Their use in material extrusion printers provides great flexibility to geometrical design functional components. However, the degradation of their mechanical behavior during and after the application of electric currents is still absent in the literature. The flow of electric currents induces material heating affecting the strength, and mechanical deformation alters the electric properties leading to bilateral dependences. These processes evolve during the application of electric fields and may degrade the material behavior permanently. In this work, we address these questions taking as baseline material a 3D printed conductive Polylactic Acid (PLA)/ Carbon Black (CB) composite. We performed multi-physical characterizations on samples with different printing orientations and lengths evaluating: i) electric behavior under direct current (DC) regime and a wideband analysis by a Frequency Response Analysis; ii) thermo-electrical behavior studying the temperature field evolution under applied electric fields; iii) thermo-mechanical behavior under uniaxial tension for different testing temperatures; iv) thermo-electrical aging/degradation effects on the mechanical behavior. The study considers a wide range of electric fields (from 180 V/m to 600 V/m) and temperatures (from 25° to 130 °C). The results show enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical stiffness when using a printing orientation parallel to the electro-mechanical loading. This coupled response is highly influenced by thermal effects due to Joule heating, especially when surpassing the glass transition and cold crystallization temperatures of the composite. The occurrence of such phase transitions governs the material degradation by promoting the growth of mesostructural pores during heating cycles arising from the application of electric fields. The obtained results are essential to unravel changes in mechanical properties when standing for continuous electric conduction and provide an experimental background for the lifetime expectance for the devices and possible thermo-electro-mechanical failure.

Effect of cavity shape on microstructural evolution of pure aluminum in electrically-assisted solidification

Grain refinement is a crucial issue in metallic materials. One of the emerging techniques to obtain equiaxed grains is to apply an electric current to the liquid metal during solidification. With this view, in this paper, the effect of electric current on the solidification behavior in various cavity shapes of mold was investigated. Cylinder-, cube-, and cuboid-shaped cavities designed to have similar cavity volume were used. By applying an electric current during the solidification of liquid aluminum, the grains were effectively refined with a grain size of approximately 350 µm for all three types of cavities. The circulating flow of liquid aluminum was observed to have a similar shear rate intensity in all three types of cavities, which is known to be sufficiently high (over hundreds of s−1) to induce dendrite fragmentation resulting newly generated nuclei. Dispersion of nuclei on unsolidified aluminum appeared differently according to the shape of the cavity, which influences final shape of refined zone. The area fraction of refined zone was affected by the relative relationship between the solidification completion time and the electric current application time. This study will provide insight to control of process parameters when electrically-assisted solidification is applied to a real product with a complex shape.

Comprehensive study of electrokinetic-assisted phytoextraction of metals from mine tailings by applying direct and alternate current

Electrokinetic-assisted phytoextraction (EKPH) involves the use of electric current to improve the mobilization of metals in soils and, therefore, their removal efficiency. It emerges as an interesting sustainable technology for the rehabilitation of abandoned mining areas. The goal of this research was to conduct a comprehensive study of this technique applied to real mine tailings from an abandoned Pb/Zn mine by using ryegrass as plant species and two types of electric current: direct with polarity reversal (DC-PR) and alternate (AC). The EKPH tests were conducted in specially designed plastic containers that allowed recording the main parameters of the electrokinetic process and sampling the different matrices studied, i.e. water, soil and plants. This intensive sampling program allowed detailed monitoring of the metal mobilization processes for the different treatments applied. The changes caused in metal mobility and physicochemical parameters of the tailings due to the application of electric current were reflected to a greater extent in the water samples than in solid ones. Accumulation of Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu in ryegrass tissues increased significantly by 41%, 17%, 34% and 32% when applying 1 V cm−1 of AC current, with respect to the results of phytoextraction without electric current. The application of DC-PR current did not lead, in general, to statistically significant increases in the plant metal uptake. These findings were adequately correlated with the changes found in the metal concentrations of soil pore water and, to a lesser extent, with those observed from the BCR sequential extraction applied to tailings samples.

The Neural Basis for Biased Behavioral Responses Evoked by Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation in Primates.

Noninvasive electrical stimulation of the vestibular system in humans has become an increasingly popular tool with a broad range of research and clinical applications. However, common assumptions regarding the neural mechanisms that underlie the activation of central vestibular pathways through such stimulation, known as galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), have not been directly tested. Here, we show that GVS is encoded by VIIIth nerve vestibular afferents with nonlinear dynamics that differ markedly from those predicted by current models. GVS produced asymmetric activation of both semicircular canal and otolith afferents to the onset versus offset and cathode versus anode of applied current, that in turn produced asymmetric eye movement responses in three awake-behaving male monkeys. Additionally, using computational methods, we demonstrate that the experimentally observed nonlinear neural response dynamics lead to an unexpected directional bias in the net population response when the information from both vestibular nerves is centrally integrated. Together our findings reveal the neural basis by which GVS activates the vestibular system, establish that neural response dynamics differ markedly from current predictions, and advance our mechanistic understanding of how asymmetric activation of the peripheral vestibular system alters vestibular function. We suggest that such nonlinear encoding is a general feature of neural processing that will be common across different noninvasive electrical stimulation approaches.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Here, we show that the application of noninvasive electrical currents to the vestibular system (GVS) induces more complex responses than commonly assumed. We recorded vestibular afferent activity in macaque monkeys exposed to GVS using a setup analogous to human studies. GVS evoked notable asymmetries in irregular afferent responses to cathodal versus anodal currents. We developed a nonlinear model explaining these GVS-evoked afferent responses. Our model predicts that GVS induces directional biases in centrally integrated head motion signals and establishes electrical stimuli that recreate physiologically plausible sensations of motion. Altogether, our findings provide new insights into how GVS activates the vestibular system, which will be vital to advancing new clinical and biomedical applications.

An innovative approach to the application of electrochemical processes based on the in-situ generation of H2O2 for water treatment

This study presents an innovative strategy for the implementation of electrochemical treatment systems based on the in-situ generation of H2O2 targeted at the removal of organic contaminants in aqueous matrices. Unlike the studies based on the continuous application of electric current, in the present work, the electric power supply was interrupted once desired concentrations of H2O2 were accumulated in solutions previously spiked with the contaminant. The accumulated H2O2 was then activated by illuminating the solution with UVC light, which gave rise to the process called UVC/¢-H2O2. The application of current densities of 10 and 25 mA cm−2 for only 10 min led to the efficient production of H2O2 in concentrations ranging from ∼48 to 112 mg L−1, which resulted in the complete degradation of the antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR; 60 μmol L−1) and high mineralization rates in the UVC/¢-H2O2@10 mA cm−2 and UVC/¢-H2O2@25 mA cm−2 processes. Moreover, no residual H2O2 was detected within 90 min of treatment in both conditions. Although similar results in terms of NOR degradation/mineralization were obtained from the application of the UVC/c-H2O2@25 mA cm−2 process (i.e., based on the continuous application of 25 mA cm−2), a significant residual concentration of H2O2 (∼100 mg L−1) was detected after treatment. Noticeably, the application of the UVC/¢-H2O2@25 mA cm−2 method led to ∼26% reduction in overall energy consumed in the mineralization process compared to the conventional system using the continuous application of electric current.

Investigation of the antimicrobial effect of anodic iontophoresis on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria for skin infections treatment

Iontophoresis, a non-invasive application of a constant low-intensity electric current, is a promising strategy to accelerate wound healing. Although its mechanisms are not yet fully elucidated, part of its action seems related to inhibiting bacteria growth. This work aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of iontophoresis using Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli strains, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. Anodic iontophoresis was applied to each bacterial suspension using Ag/AgCl electrodes, and bacteria viability was evaluated after 24 h incubation by counting colony-forming units. A Quality-by-Design approach was performed to assess the influence of the iontophoresis’ intensity and application time on bacterial viability. Cell morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Iontophoresis showed antimicrobial effects on the Gram-positive bacteria only at 5 mA and 60 min application. However, a linear relationship was observed between intensity and application time for the Gram-negative one, causing drastic morphological changes and up to 98 % death. The cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria seems more susceptible to disorganization triggered by iontophoresis-induced ion transport than Gram-positive ones. Therefore, anodic iontophoresis can be a powerful ally in controlling Gram-negative bacteria proliferation in wounds.

Processing and Properties of Tungsten-Steel Composites and FGMs Prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering

Tungsten is the prime candidate material for the plasma-facing components of fusion reactors. For the joining of tungsten armor to the cooling system or support structure, composites or graded interlayers can be used to reduce the stress concentration at the interface. These interlayers can be produced by several technologies. Among these, spark plasma sintering appears advantageous because of its ability to fabricate fully dense parts at lower temperatures and in a shorter time than traditional powder metallurgy techniques, thanks to the concurrent application of temperature, pressure, and electrical current. In this work, spark plasma sintering of tungsten-steel composites and functionally graded layers (FGMs) was investigated. As a first step, pure tungsten and steel powders of different sizes were sintered at a range of temperatures to find a suitable temperature window for fully dense compacts. Characterization of the sintered compacts included structure (by SEM); porosity (by the Archimedean method and image analysis); thermal diffusivity (by the flash method) and mechanical properties (microhardness and flexural strength). Compacts with practically full density and fine grains were obtained; while the temperature needed to achieve full sintering decreased with decreasing powder size (down to about 1500 °C for the 0.4 μm powder). For fully sintered compacts, the hardness and thermal diffusivity increased with decreasing powder size. Composites with selected tungsten/steel ratios were produced at several conditions and characterized. At temperatures of 1100 °C or above, intermetallic formation was observed in the composites; nevertheless, without a detrimental effect on the mechanical strength. Finally, the formation of graded layers and tungsten-steel joints in various configurations was demonstrated.

Microtensile bond strength of resin composite to dentin using different adhesive systems and directions of electric current

Thisstudy aimed to evaluate the effect of the electric current direction application on the resin composite-dentin bond strength using three adhesive systems. Human molar teeth were distributed according to the adhesive system (two-step self-etch - Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray [CSE]; one-step self-etch - Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE [SBU]; and two-step etch-and-rinse - Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE [SB2]), electric current direction (without electric current - control, direct and reverse electric currents - 35µA), and storage time (24h - immediate and 6 months). Resin composite blocks (Filtek Z350XT, 3M ESPE) were bonded to dentin. The teeth/resin composites specimens were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 hours and 6 months for the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test (n = 10; ~12 sticks for each tooth). Failure patterns were analyzed on a stereomicroscope and classified as cohesive-dentin, cohesive-resin, adhesive or mixed. Adhesive penetration into dentin and hybrid layer formation were evaluated in a scanning electron microscope (n = 6). Data were submitted to a three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). There are no differences in µTBS when the adhesive systems were applied under direct and reverse electric currents, but both electric currents increased the µTBS for all adhesive systems. SBU showed the lowest µTBS values for control groups in both storage times and direct electric current in 6 months of storage. The adhesive failure pattern was more frequently observed in all groups. The electric current formed long resin tags for all adhesive systems. Storage for 6 months did not significantly decrease µTBS values. Both directions of electric current (positive and negative charges) at 35µA can increase the µTBS of the adhesive systems tested to dentin.

Cognitive function and brain activation before and after transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation in healthy adults: A concurrent tcVNS-fMRI study.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, which involves the application of electrical currents to the cervical (tcVNS) or auricular (taVNS) branches of the vagus nerve, may be a potential treatment for improving cognitive dysfunction. taVNS may improve cognitive performance in healthy adults, and fewer studies have been performed on the effects of tcVNS on cognition in healthy subjects. We conducted a randomized, single-blind, crossover-controlled trial to investigate the effects of tcVNS stimulation on cognitive function and neural activity in the brains of healthy adults. This study provides support for further tcVNS studies for the treatment of cognitive impairment. Twenty-one participants were randomly divided into two groups, A and B. Group A received tcVNS first and then sham-tcVNS, while group B received the intervention in the reverse order, receiving sham stimulation first and then true stimulation. All subjects were required to perform cognitive function tests before and after receiving intervention, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed concurrently during the intervention. We hypothesized that tcVNS would have an effect on the cognitive performance of the subjects and alter the neural activity of the brain. The present study showed that tcVNS had beneficial effects on cognitive performance, mainly improving memory and language skills and attention. tcVNS intervention produced significant spontaneous neural activity in the calcarine gyrus, fusiform gyrus, lingual gyrus, and parahippocampal gyrus of the brain. Future tcVNS/fMRI trials will need to explore the effects of changes in stimulus parameters on the neural activity response of the brain.

Degradation of COD in antibiotic wastewater by a combination process of electrochemistry, hydroxyl-functionalized ball-milled zero-valent iron/Fe3O4 and Oxone

ABSTRACT In this study, the significant iron-based material, hydroxyl-functionalized ball-milled zero-valent iron/Fe3O4 (HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4) was employed for the experiments. The performance of the Electro + HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 + Oxone system for the degradation of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in antibiotic wastewater was investigated. A direct current was applied between a graphite plate anode and two iron plate cathodes, and a series of operational parameters, such as applied electric current, the dosage of HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 composite, the dosage of Oxone, and initial solution pH, were explored to evaluate the oxidation process. The application of electric current enhanced the gradual degradation of COD and the increase of current intensity accelerated COD degradation. The neutral condition was favourable for the rapid degradation of COD in a short reaction time by the Electro + HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 + Oxone process and promoted the degradation efficiency of COD. An increase of electric current gradually decreased the reaction solution pH, the larger the electric current applied in the reaction process, the lower the final pH of the reaction solution. Under the optimal experimental conditions (1 g/L HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 composite, 0.3 g/L Oxone, current intensity = 500 mA, initial solution pH = 7.85), Electro + HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 + Oxone achieved 99% COD degradation in antibiotic wastewater. Radicals quenching experiments indicated the contribution to COD degradation by hydroxyl radicals (HO•), sulphate radicals (SO4 •–) and other oxidants were 66.03%, 24.014% and 9.756%, respectively. The possible mechanism of COD degradation in the Electro + HFB-ZVI/Fe3O4 + Oxone system was also discussed in this study. The findings in this work provided useful information for the treatment of wastewater.
