A Software Testing Workflow Analysis Tool Based on the ADCV Method

Based on two progressive aspects of the modeling problems in business process management (BPM), (1) in order to address the increasing complexity of user requirements on workflows underlying various BPM application scenarios, a more verifiable fundamental modeling method must be invented; (2) to address the diversification of software testing processes, more formalized advanced modeling technology must also be applied based on the fundamental modeling method. Aiming to address these modeling problems, this paper first proposes an ADCV (acquisition, decomposition, combination, and verification) method that runs through the core management links of four types of business processes (mining, decomposition, recombination, and verification) and then describes the compositional structure of the ADCV method and the design of corresponding algorithms. Then, the software testing workflow is managed and monitored using the method, and the corresponding analysis tool is implemented based on Petri nets. At the same time, the tool is applied to the case processing of the software testing workflow. Specifically, the workflow models are established successively through ADCV during the process of business iteration. Then, the analysis tool developed with the ADCV method, the model–view–controller (MVC) design pattern, and Java Swing technology are applied to instances of the software testing workflow to realize the modeling and management of the testing processes. Thus, the analysis tool can guarantee the accuracy of the parameter estimations of related software reliability growth models (SRGMs) and ultimately improve the quality of software products.

Cloud BPM Application (Appian) Robotic Process Automation Capabilities

Appian’s RPA capabilities also facilitate seamless integration with existing systems and applications, allowing organizations to leverage their investments in legacy systems while enhancing their automation capabilities. Through APIs and connectors, software robots can interact with databases, web services, enterprise applications, and other sources of data, enabling end-to-end process automation. Additionally, the Appian platform provides comprehensive monitoring, reporting, and analytics capabilities for RPA. Organizations can track and measure the performance of software robots, identify bottlenecks, and gain insights into process efficiency and effectiveness. Blockchain-as-a-Service for Business Process Management: Survey and Challenges

Blockchain technology (BCT) has brought a paradigm shift to Business Process Management (BPM). BCT provides a trusted decentralized infrastructure to secure data and process executions using distributed ledgers and smart contract to manage complex business processes. Numerous efforts have been made to exploit BCT in supporting dynamic and trusted collaborations of business processes. This paper aims to understand recent BCT development for its BPM applications and identify the limitations and challenges for further development via a systematic literature review (SLR). It is found that numerous works have reported using BCT as technical solutions to fulfill some traditional BPM functions. This paper is distinguished from existing works, especially several relevant surveys in the sense that (1) the impact of using BCT in BPM is thoroughly explored to identify new constraints and challenges explicitly brought by blockchains; (2) the requirements for Business Process Compliance (BPC) are firstly analyzed in detail. Note that BPC is to assure the adherence of business processes to pre-defined policies, standards, specifications, regulations, and laws when business processes are executed. To fill the gaps of BCT applications in these two aspects, Blockchain-as-a-Service (BCaaS) is adopted in business process architecture, and the trends of BCT developments are identified accordingly.

Optimizing Player Management Processes in Sports: Translating Lessons from Healthcare Process Improvements to Sports

Abstract Typical player management processes focus on managing an athlete’s physical, physiological, psychological, technical and tactical preparation and performance. Current literature illustrates limited attempts to optimize such processes in sports. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the application of Business Process Management (BPM) in healthcare (a service industry resembling sports) and formulate a model to optimize data driven player management processes in professional sports. A systematic review, adhering to PRISMA framework was conducted on articles extracted from seven databases, focused on using BPM to digitally optimize patient related healthcare processes. Literature reviews by authors was the main mode of healthcare process identification for BPM interventions. Interviews with process owners followed by process modelling were common modes of process discovery. Stakeholder and value-based analysis highlighted potential optimization areas. In most articles, details on process redesign strategies were not explicitly provided. New digital system developments and implementation of Business Process Management Systems were common. Optimized processes were evaluated using usability assessments and pre-post statistical analysis of key process performance indicators. However, the scientific rigor of most experiments designed for such latter evaluations were suboptimal. From the findings, a stepwise approach to optimize data driven player management processes in professional sports has been proposed.

Business Process Management for corporate customer service is a comprehensive series of activities to define the types of products and services that will be the main needs of customers, so that the quality of service results can be planned and measured. Business process design is a framework for a core process that develops from a short-term and long-term business strategy, so that the business strategy will determine the pillars of the business that will be carried out. Serving the needs of customers and interested parties will be the main focus of a business process that will be carried out within the organization. The application of business process management is a method for identifying and evaluating a company's business and for finding out the current condition of the company in developing improvement programs that can be done through a descriptive process. The output and application of business process management are in the form of increasing the efficiency and productivity of the company in terms of cost and time as well as improving the quality of products and services produced, as well as mitigating business risks that may occur. Data collection methods, analysis methods, development methods, design design methods and testing methods are research methods that are used systematically so that it includes several activities for gradual improvement of the work process from previous conditions and increasing system reliability to obtain facts or principles from knowledge with how to issue register and perform root cause analysis with several impact assessments by quantitative analysis, heuristic design, simulation, flow analysis, pareto analysis and pick chart, queue, up to a systematic redesign to the process.

Business process management (bpm) application through strategy, indicators and operations model (meio): a health service company case

Business Process Management (BPM) is an approach to analyze and improve main activities of a company continuously. It seeks consistent results aligned with the strategic objectives. There are several approaches to the application of BPM, which focus on specific aspects of the company, not meeting all their needs. The Strategy, Indicators and Operations Model (MEIO), developed by Müller (2003), compiles the fundamental points of each isolated approach, creating a single model. The objective of this work is to provide a step-by-step application of the BPM aspects of MEIO in a practical case: a reference company that provides health services. Also, it provides a framework for organizing and connecting the various components of a product or service to its value chain. Through MEIO, a general analyze of the Company under study was made and the process “payment of invoices from providers” was detailed. Improvements were suggested based on a deeper investigation of the activities involved. The results include: (i) creation of rules engine to validate the procedures to be launched according to coverage, shortage, and contract; (ii) receiving procedure and cost audits separately and; (iii) digitalization and automatization of repetitive and manual activities.

Analysis of Business Process Management (BPM) Effect towards Data and Information Quality Improvement at Higher Education: A Literature Study

Business Process Management (BPM) is a collection of methods, techniques, and tools to optimize organizational performance. In the case of higher education institutions (HEIs), BPM is usually implemented to provide a standard business process. Implementation of Data Governance (DG) is often based on the desire for good Data Quality (DQ), to help an organization carry out its strategies and achieve its objectives. Previous research has proven that DG would improve data quality and safety and trigger a better standard. While data and information are essentially connected, BPM and DG have been addressed separately in the process of obtaining high quality data and information. This study conducts a literature review to investigate the relationship of BPM in the development of DG in HEIs. Articles related to BPM, DG, and DQ are collected from relevant databases. The articles are filtered and perused further to obtain 23 articles that are analyzed and synthesized to answer the research question. Based on these articles, a conceptual model is developed, depicting relationship in the application of BPM and DG. The first relationship identified from previous work is that the successful implementation of BPM influences DG planning and implementation success. Second, a good BPM implementation influences the process of obtaining a good DQ. Finally, implementing a good DG influences the acquirement of a good DQ. This study also found that BPM, DG, and DQ implementation at HEIs was fewer than that at other sectors or case studies, which open up opportunities for further studies.

An application of business process management in a dental clinic

Micro and small businesses are of great importance to the national environment of a country, due to their participation in economic growth. However, such businesses are characterized as poorly-managed, informal working environments, lacking both process organization and operational and strategic planning, and hence face difficulties in maintaining their position in the marketplace. In this context, the objective of this research was to analyze the case of a dental clinic located in a city from the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to understand and define the critical client service and stock management processes, through an application of the Business Process Management (BPM) model. The results show that BPM can be adapted for use with micro and small businesses, offering improvements and standardization for their most important processes.

The Application of Business Process Management in the Hospitality Industry: A Case Study

The study focuses on the application of Business Process Management and modelling within the hospitality industry. The lack of recent research shows the need for a deeper understanding of this topic and its application in the hospitality industry. This paper focuses on the use of BPM in a four-star hotel located in city-centre of Prague. An overview model was created to distinguish the core, managerial and supporting processes.

Improving Emergency Department Through Business Process Redesign

The Emergency Departments (ED) of hospitals are poised for continuous improvement due to increasing demand. The ED are places where the efficiency of the services provided can save lives and therefore it should be seen as an area of maximum interest for process optimisation. This research aims at verifying if the application of Business Process Management (BPM) heuristics positively impacts the length of stay (LoS), without deteriorating the quality of the service provided. The methodology that underlies this research is a case study carried out in the ED of a public hospital. The data was gathered from individual interviews, focus groups, direct observation and document analysis. The BPM life cycle stages were followed. In addition, a simulation tool was used, and heuristics were chosen based on Devil’s Quadrangle theory. Three scenarios of the ED were considered. Additionally, three heuristics and any combination of them were also considered. Results show that heuristics positively impact the time variable without affecting the quality of the service, resulting in value gains for the patient. In terms of time consumption, the average LoS in the process was reduced by 22.5%, 15.9%, and 20.9% for each of the considered scenarios, while the maximum LoS was reduced by 29.2%, 36.2% % and 37.4%. Implications from these results were analysed. The novelty of this research is supported by the absence of studies applying BPM heuristics to ED. This research is a step forward to ally BPM heuristics and ED processes.

In the value chain it is important to keep in mind the core business of the company, since it depends largely on the competitiveness of the company and its overall performance, bearing in mind that all business indicators depend on it. In this work we will study the washing process within the company WASH CONTAINERS SA DE CV, to improve the washing processes and in this way reduce times and movements in the process leading the company to reduce costs considerably within the operations company daily, having a more competitive operation and with greater profit margin in its business process. Goals: It Improve the logistics of the movement of containers for washing and with it the core business of the company. Methodology: The action research will be applied applying Business Process Management for the improvement of processes in situ, it will be developed in a certain period of time and with that it will establish an improvement projection. Contribution: The improvement of the times for the disposal of the containers and their subsequent use, allows a better competitiveness and with it the income of the company, on the other hand, the transport companies improve in performance in quantity, quality of disposition and with it their income.

The HORSE Project: The Application of Business Process Management for Flexibility in Smart Manufacturing

Several high-tech manufacturing technologies are emerging to meet the demand for mass customized products. These technologies include configurable robots, augmented reality and the Internet-of-Things. Manufacturing enterprises can leverage these new technologies to pursue increased flexibility, i.e., the ability to perform a larger variety of activities within a shorter time. However, the flexibility offered by these new technologies is not fully exploited, because current operations management techniques are not dynamic enough to support high variability and frequent change. The HORSE Project investigated several of the new technologies to find novel ways to improve flexibility, as part of the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The purpose of the project was to develop a system, integrating these new technologies, to support efficient and flexible manufacturing. This article presents the core result of the project: a reference architecture for a manufacturing operations management system. It is based on the application and extension of business process management (BPM) to manage dynamic manufacturing processes. It is argued that BPM can complement current operations management techniques by acting as an orchestrator in manufacturing processes augmented by smart technologies. Building on well-known information systems’ architecting frameworks, design science research is performed to determine how BPM can be applied and adapted in smart manufacturing operations. The resulting reference architecture is realized in a concrete HORSE system and deployed and evaluated in ten practical cases, of which one is discussed in detail. It is shown that the developed system can flexibly orchestrate the manufacturing process through vertical control of all agents, and dynamic allocation of agents in the manufacturing process. Based on that, we conclude that BPM can be applied to overcome some of the obstacles toward increased flexibility and smart manufacturing.

Towards successful establishment of a project portfolio management system: business process management approach

Linking structures, processes and resources with corporate strategies is a key requirement of today’s organizations, bringing about integration toward achieving long-term objectives. Organizations can no longer rely on traditional practices since advanced systems and management approaches are being applied by their competitors. The project portfolio management (PPM) is a tool that plays a key role in collecting information from operational levels and consolidating them at the portfolio level for strategic decision-making. Establishment of this approach in organizations requires robust information systems, analytical software, decision-making structure, and governance framework to be in place. Primarily, a systematic perspective needs to be adopted to define, design and model all the necessary components of a PPM system. Business process management (BPM), as a systematic approach, can be effectively applied for this purpose. The aim of this study is to introduce one of the specific applications of the BPM approach in facilitating the systematic implementation of PPM in organizations. This theoretical study is exploratory in essence and tries to theorize the relationship between BPM and PPM to develop a conceptual framework highlighting the role of BPM in embedding all the necessary features of a PPM system. We found key functions of BPM that contribute to three aspects of PPM system namely; structure, infrastructure, and process. The findings introduce one of the important application of BPM in the management of project portfolios and also provide professionals with practical insight into how the BPM should be applied to facilitate the implementation of this system.

Organisational Culture as a Determinant of Business Process Management in the Community Offices in Poland

The application of business process management (BPM) in public organizations is determined by multiple factors and, according to numerous studies, organizational culture is one of them. Therefore, the aim of the study presented in the article was to identify the organizational culture factors which occur in community offices in Poland. Subsequently, the identified factors were assessed in the context of their significance in the introduction and development of BPM in the examined entities. As a result of the conducted study, it was possible to indicate not only the factors, which have the potential to stimulate the implementation and extension of the concept in the community offices, but also the elements recognized as its barriers. Among the factors that can be considered as the mentioned stimulants, these were: the possibility of exchanging opinions with one’s superiors and colleagues, the will to learn and to broaden one’s knowledge, good and friendly interpersonal relations, or an orientation towards service quality. And among the elements that can be perceived as barriers, one can identify a lack of positive attitude to change or the formalization arising from the law.

Industry 4.0 and business process management

Production companies are adopting new methods for the improvement of their managing production processes. The cost, quality and time are still key important attributes for process improvement. This is reason why the Business Process Management (BPM) is the core of management in different areas, e.g., quality management, sustainability management. The new technologies based on Internet of Things and Services, SMART solutions, and the concept Industry 4.0 are opening new possibilities of BPM implementation. This theoretical paper deals with a review of new trends in BPM and a presentation of the possibilities of core technologies for Industry 4.0 in phases of BPM applications.

The knowledge and process continuum

The aim of the paper is to propose the concept of the Knowledge and Process Continuum, which corresponds to the changing role of Business Process Management (BPM) in Knowledge Intensive Organizations in the Knowledge Economy. The paper is conceptual in nature and is grounded in the theories of Knowledge Management (KM) and BPM. The systematic literature review method was used in order to employ a manual search of peer‐reviewed papers available in the Springer and ProQuest databases. Seventeen articles were chosen for in‐depth analysis, which shows the research gap with respect to the integrated application of KM and BPM. The article is an inspiring contribution to the theoretical reflection on the current state and further evolution of BPM in the Knowledge Economy and its inseparable connection with KM. The proposed conceptual framework may facilitate the management of Knowledge Intensive Organizations to effectively capitalize on the relationship between knowledge and business processes of different nature.

Business process management in the port sector: a literature review

Purpose This paper aims to review the application of business process management (BPM) in the port sector. Its objective is to understand whether BPM principles are applied in the port sector, the role of the procedural factor in port performance evaluation and whether electronic data interchange systems have been used for process management purposes. Design/methodology/approach The objective of this research is to conduct a critical review of existing academic literature in the domain of BPM and its application in the ports sector. This paper assessed more than a hundred recent publications, from key journals in the domains of port economics, BPM and information technology. The two principle platforms used are the online databases of the World Bank Group and the University of Antwerp. Findings Academic literature reviewed reveals a partial application of BPM in the port and maritime sector. BPM related research is conducted via the utilization of modeling algorithms or optimization and simulation tools. There exists evidence that electronic data interchange (EDI) data extracted from EDI platforms can be used to model inter-organizational business processes in several industries. Yet, to the best of the author’s knowledge, no research investigates Port Community System (PCS) or single window (SW) data utilization for BPM purposes, although PCS and SW benefits are well documented. Port performance is largely assessed based on the production theory, and limited number of studies use elements of procedural efficiency as variables for their analysis. Originality/value The holistic application of BPM has been researched in numerous industries but in the port sector. This paper constitutes the first section of an original research study to define key components, assumptions and constraints for developing a comprehensive BPM framework in the port sector.

Building a BPM application in an SOA-based legacy environment

Modern organizations need to understand and constantly improve their business processes (BPs) in order to make successful business decisions. This paper describes an integration model for building a Business Process Management Application (BPMA) and connecting the BPMA with legacy systems based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). A BPMA is an application developed to support a BP performed by legacy application/s. A combination of multiple BPMAs provides support for multiple BPs and forms a BPM solution. The presented model is characterized by a simple co-dependence of the BPMA and the existing systems, minimal changes to the legacy applications and a maximal utilization of the existing functionalities. It enables the existing applications to function independently from the BPMA and simplifies the business data used in the BPMA. An extensive evaluation of the model was undertaken by experts from the BPM area. Its feasibility is demonstrated on a real-life business use case scenario.
