Synthesis and Characterizations of BiFeO3 Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Application

AbstractBismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) nanoparticles were synthesized using sol‐gel method and annealed at 450 °C, 550 °C, 650 °C, and 750 °C for 2 hours. The role of annealing temperature on structural, optical, magnetic, and dielectric properties of BiFeO3 nanoparticles was studied. XRD patterns of BiFeO3 nanoparticles confirm the rhombohedral structure with a mean crystallite size of 40 nm. The optical bandgap of the BiFeO3 nanoparticles increased from 1.9 eV to 2.02 eV with annealing temperature. From photoluminescence spectra, it was observed that the BiFeO3 nanoparticles showed a clear emission peak at 565 nm and its intensity decreased with annealing temperature. Magnetic properties of the BiFeO3 nanoparticles were studied at room temperature and different magnetic behaviours were found in BiFeO3 nanoparticles. The BiFeO3 nanoparticles exhibited ferromagnetism at low annealing temperatures and diamagnetic nature at high annealing temperatures. The AC conductivity studies showed that BiFeO3 nanoparticles possess a dielectric constant of 170 with the least dielectric loss. The BiFeO3 nanoparticles annealed at 750 °C were studied for photocatalytic properties and showed good photocatalytic activity in the visible region. A prominent absorption peak at 663 nm in absorption spectra due to MB and it confirm the utility of BFO as photocatalyst applications.

Influence of copper content on the synthesis and application of copper-doped gallium liquid metal-based photocatalyst Cux/Ga2O3 in acetaminophen photodegradation

This work addresses the effect of copper content on the synthesis and application of copper-doped gallium liquid metal-based photocatalysts. Ga2O3-copper ion doped were synthesized at 0, 5, 7, and 10% wt by the ultrasonic transducer. Characterization was done by TGA, XRD, XPS, SEM/EDS, ATR-FTIR, and UV–vis-NIR diffused reflectance. Additionally, we study the photocatalytic activity in degrading and mineralizing acetaminophen under visible light. Results show that the copper content influences the structural, optical, morphological, and photocatalytic properties.

Quaternary Cu2ZnSnS4 and Cu2ZnSnS4-WS2 composite for enhanced antioxidant, antibacterial, and photocatalyst for degradation of sulfamethoxazole

Antibiotic contamination possesses several adverse effects including antibiotic resistance, ecological impact, and human health concern etc. Hence there is need to find ways in mitigation of this environmental issue. In this study, Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanoparticles (NPs) and CZTS-WS2 composite were synthesized and explored its photocatalytic efficiency in degrading sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic. In addition, the antioxidant and antibacterial capabilities of CZTS NPs and CZTS-WS2 composites were also investigated. The CZTS NPs and CZTS-WS2 composites were synthesized by a modified hydrothermal method, and the physical properties were explored. The p-type pristine CZTS NPs semiconductor with a direct bandgap (1.49–1.51 eV) is non-toxic and has a remarkable photostability making it extremely valuable in light-harvesting and photocatalyst applications. Quaternary CZTS NPs loaded with 10 % WS2 exhibits good photocatalytic activity for the breakdown of sulfamethoxazole. The Fenton procedure was used to extract sulfamethoxazole from an aqueous solution. When compared to CZTS NPs (0.088 min−1), the apparent rate constant for CZTS-WS2 composite (0.223 min−1) is almost two and a half times higher. Reactive quenching studies showed that OH, O2−, and 1O2 all contributed to SMX deterioration, with 1O2 outperforming O2− and OH. An SMX transformation pathway in the CZTS-WS2 composite process was postulated based on the identified intermediates by LC/MS. Finally, the composite’s reusability and stability were assessed during five separate runs. CZTS-WS2 composite demonstrated more than 80 % radical scavenging efficiency. CZTS NPs and CZTS-WS2 composite also demonstrate antibacterial capabilities against E. coli, S. aureus, M. luteus, and C. albicans. This is the first paper on the photocatalytic study of the degradation of sulfamethoxazole using CZTS NPs and CZTS-WS2 composite as catalysts. The current CZTS-WS2 composite’s outstanding catalytic efficacy in the absence of severe oxidizing/reducing agents and pricey noble metals has been ascribed to its size, surface area, and electronic effect. Hence this work describes a novel approach to developing efficient materials for antioxidant, antibacterial, and photocatalysts for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers in the water environmental field: A review on the detection and efficient removal of emerging contaminants

The emerging contaminants in the environment pose a threat to ecological security and human health. At present, traditional technologies are difficult to detect and remove existing trace emerging contaminants in water bodies. Therefore, efficient removal of low concentration emerging contaminants is a key issue in ensuring water safety. As an emerging technology, molecular imprinting technology (MIT) can synthesize polymers with specific recognition ability for target pollutants, providing a new approach for efficient removal of emerging contaminants. It is worth noting that combining MIT with traditional catalysts is an effective method to improve detection limits and removal efficiency. This review mainly introduced the research progress of using MIT to detect pollutants in various sensors and using advanced oxidation technology to remove pollutants in recent years, focusing on the preparation and application of MIT-based photocatalysts, electrocatalysts, and Fenton-like catalysts. In addition, possible interactions between the target analyte and MIT were discussed, as well as the reusability and stability of imprinted catalysts in water treatment, and their potential ecological toxicity risks were analyzed. Finally, the challenges of MIT based pollutant mitigation and the application prospects of molecular imprinting technology in environmental analysis were elaborated from multiple perspectives.

Exploring the Structural, Optical and Photoluminescence Performances of CuCo2O4 and ZnMn2O4 Alloying

The performance of the structural, linear/ nonlinear optical and photoluminescent properties of CuCo2O4 and ZnMn2O4 alloying was investigated. (1−x)CuCo2O4/(x)ZnMn2O4 (x = 0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.2) samples were prepared by the sol-gel and hydrothermal procedures. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements were employed to investigate the structural and microstructural properties applying the Rietveld refinement method. Fourier transform infraed and Raman techniques were applied to explore the structures’ variation and chemical bonding of the obtained phases. Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurements were collected to explore the optical properties. The optical band gap values were determined using the Kubelka-Munk method. All samples exhibited two band gaps in the visible-NIR regions. Upon composing with ZnMn2O4, the band gaps of CuCo2O4 declined for x = 0.1 and 0.15, followed by an increase at x = 0.2. The possible electronic band structure of the samples and the photoluminescent performance of the prepared samples was investigated. The observed PL patterns manifest wide and asymmetrical emissions. The CIE chromaticity diagram for all samples was plotted. The obtained findings of (1−x)CuCo2O4/(x)ZnMn2O4 nominate their efficient role in optical device fabrication and photocatalyst applications.

Photothermal-enabled metal-free polyfuran photocatalysts for efficient solar-to-hydrogen peroxide energy conversion from seawater

Solar-driven H2O2 photosynthesis from inexhaustible seawater is promising for alleviating increasingly-serious energy/environmental crises. Herein, a new metal-free photothermal-assisted photocatalyst containing strong π-stacked polyfuran D-A couples is synthesized by employing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural as precursor, which enables the highly-efficient H2O2 photosynthesis from seawater without any sacrificial agent. Its unique aromatic and quinoid furan alternating structure promotes the photogenerated charge transfer and the activation of oxygen molecules, thus remarkedly boosting H2O2 production rate. Furthermore, its localized photothermal and “electron bridge” effects can enhance the kinetic process of this reaction and accelerate the charge transfer, respectively, resulting in a high H2O2 yield of 1883.81 μmol g−1 h−1 with a high solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.48 % in seawater under simulated-sunlight irradiation. Impressively, it can achieve a high H2O2 concentration of 1867.81 μmol L−1 in natural seawater in one day under natural-sunlight irradiation, representing the first successful application of metal-free polyfuran photocatalysts for the photothermal-assisted H2O2 photosynthesis from natural seawater.

Application of multilevel immobilized carbon nanotube/sulfur doped carbon nitride composite photocatalytic coating for Cr6+(aq.) reduction

The difficulty in immobilizing carbon nitride (GCN), and the decrease in sorption capacity and photocatalytic performance after immobilization process have become two major bottlenecks limiting the practical application of carbon nitride in photocatalysis field. Herein, sulfur doped carbon nitride and carbon nanotube composite photocatalysts (CNT/SCN) with high sorption, light harvesting capacity, and reduction efficiency was synthesized by two-step solvothermal method. Furthermore, CNT/SCN composite photocatalytic coating with porous three-dimensional surface morphology was prepared using double liquid phase high speeding spray-deposition method. The coverage rate of CNT/SCN coating was calculated to be 55 %, which was 1.57 times higher than that of GCN coating. The introduction of carbon nanotube (CNT) significantly improved the sorption capacity of photocatalytic coating for hexavalent chromium (Cr6+(aq.)). The reduction efficiency of the composite coating towards Cr6+(aq.) under flowing water conditions was further investigated. The CNT/SCN coating exhibited a high removal efficiency of 84.7 % for Cr6+(aq.) (500 mL, 10 mgL−1) within 8 h, which was 29 times than that of GCN coating. The reduction efficiency of CNT/SCN photocatalytic coating remained above 75 % after three cycles of testing. This research provides theoretical basis and data support for the immobilization application of photocatalysts.

Synthesis and Characterization of Composite WO3 Fibers/g-C3N4 Photocatalysts for the Removal of the Insecticide Clothianidin in Aquatic Media.

Photocatalysis is a prominent alternative wastewater treatment technique that has the potential to completely degrade pesticides as well as other persistent organic pollutants, leading to detoxification of wastewater and thus paving the way for its efficient reuse. In addition to the more conventional photocatalysts (e.g., TiO2, ZnO, etc.) that utilize only UV light for activation, the interest of the scientific community has recently focused on the development and application of visible light-activated photocatalysts like g-C3N4. However, some disadvantages of g-C3N4, such as the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges, limit its utility. In this light, the present study focuses on the synthesis of WO3 fibers/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunctions to improve the efficiency of g-C3N4 towards the photocatalytic removal of the widely used insecticide clothianidin. The effect of two different g-C3N4 precursors (urea and thiourea) and of WO3 fiber content on the properties of the synthesized composite materials was also investigated. All aforementioned materials were characterized by a number of techniques (XRD, SEM-EDS, ATR-FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, DRS, etc.). According to the results, mixing 6.5% W/W WO3 fibers with either urea or thiourea derived g-C3N4 significantly increased the photocatalytic activity of the resulting composites compared to the precursor materials. In order to further elucidate the effect of the most efficient composite photocatalyst in the degradation of clothianidin, the generated transformation products were tentatively identified through UHPLC tandem high-resolution mass spectroscopy. Finally, the detoxification effect of the most efficient process was also assessed by combining the results of an in-vitro methodology and the predictions of two in-silico tools.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activities of Sodium Borohydride-Calcined Magnetic Manganese Ferrite Nanoparticles.

The synthesis, enhancement, and maintenance of magnetite-based catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) are important for photocatalytic activity and recovery rates. We used a sodium borohydride (NaBH4) calcination method to modify MnFe2O4 nanoparticles to optimize their performance in the photocatalytic oxidation of 2,5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The results indicated a 94% increase in photocatalytic efficiency, while magnetic assessments performed using a vibrating sample magnetometer showed an 8.9% improvement in magnetic properties without degradation. These findings show the dual benefits of increased photocatalytic performance with strong magnetic properties, which are important for the application and reusability of photocatalysts. The recycling of these photocatalysts reduces secondary pollution and increases the process cost-effectiveness. These results contribute to the solution of problems with the use of photocatalytic materials.

Prediction of single-layer antimony oxyselenide (Sb2O2Se2): metal-to-semiconductor transition via hydrogenation

In this study, the structural, electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of single-layer Antimony Oxyselenide (Sb2O2Se2) and its hydrogenated structure (Sb2O2Se2H2) are investigated by performing density functional theory-based first principles calculations. Geometry optimizations reveal that single-layer Sb2O2Se2 crystallizes in tetragonal structure which is shown to possess dynamical stability by means of phonon band dispersions. In addition, the mechanical stability of the predicted single layer is satisfied via the linear-elastic parameters. Electronically, it is revealed that single-layer Sb2O2Se2 exhibits metallic behavior whose highest occupied states are found to arise from the surface Se atoms, may be an indication for tuning the electronic features via surface functionalization. For the surface modification of Sb2O2Se2, top of each Se atom is saturated with a H atom and fully hydrogenated single-layer Sb2O2Se2H2 is shown to be an in-plane anisotropic structure. Phonon band dispersion calculations indicate the dynamical stability of Sb2O2Se2H2. Mechanically stable Sb2O2Se2H2 is found to possess anisotropic linear-elastic behavior, which is much softer than its pristine structure. Moreover, electronically a metallic-to-semiconducting transition is shown to occur as the unoccupied Se-orbitals are saturated via H atoms. Our work offers insights into prediction of a novel single-layer material, namely Sb2O2Se2, and reports the chemically-driven semiconducting behavior via hydrogenation, which may lead to the use of hydrogenated structure in solar cell, photoelectrode, or photocatalyst applications owing to its suitable band gap.

Advances in the Removal of Organic Pollutants from Water by Photocatalytic Activation of Persulfate: Photocatalyst Modification Strategy and Reaction Mechanism.

Environmental pollution caused by persistent organic pollutants has imposed big threats to the health of human and ecological systems. The development of efficient methods to effectively degrade and remove these persistent organic pollutants is therefore of paramount importance. Photocatalytic persulfate-based advanced oxidation technologies (PS-AOTs), which depend on the highly reactive SO4 - radicals generated by the activation of PS to degrade persistent organic pollutants, have shown great promise. This work discusses the application and modification strategies of common photocatalysts in photocatalytic PS-AOTs, and compares the degradation performance of different catalysts for pollutants. Furthermore, essential elements impacting photocatalytic PS-AOTs are discussed, including the water matrix, reaction process mechanism, pollutant degradation pathway, singlet oxygen generation, and potential PS hazards. Finally, the existing issues and future challenges of photocatalytic PS-AOTs are summarized and prospected to encourage their practical application. In particular, by providing new insights into the PS-AOTs, this review sheds light on the opportunities and challenges for the development of photocatalysts with advanced features for the PS-AOTs, which will be of great interests to promote better fundamental understanding of the PS-AOTs and their practical applications.

Sustainable design of photo-Fenton-like oxidation process in actual livestock wastewater through the highly dispersed FeCl3 anchoring on a g-C3N4 substrate

Photocatalytic technology emerges as a promising solution for the sustainable treatment of contaminated wastewater. However, the practical implementation of designed photocatalysts often faces challenges due to the intricate ‘high carbon footprint’ process and limited outdoor laboratory investigations. Herein, a simple yet versatile impregnation approach is proposed to anchor highly dispersed FeCl3 on a g-C3N4 substrate (Fe-C3N4) with minimal energy consumption and post-processing. Fe-C3N4 enhances photocatalytic reactivity for antibiotic degradation via a synergistic photo-Fenton-like oxidation technique, efficiently removing antibiotic pollutants from actual livestock wastewater. The Fe-C3N4 catalyst exhibited consistent degradation performance over five cycles in laboratory conditions, maintaining a degradation efficiency exceeding 90 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCHCl). Furthermore, we engineered a straightforward Fe-C3N4Na2SiO3 reactor for treating livestock wastewater, achieving an 81.8 % removal of TCHCl in outdoor field tests conducted in the winter and summer in China. The Fe-C3N4 catalyst demonstrated high feasibility in treating antibiotic-contaminated livestock wastewater under year-round climatic conditions, leveraging synergistic effects. The stabilization of Fe-C3N4 for the degradation of antibiotic-containing wastewater under sunlight represents a significant advancement in the practical application of photocatalysts, marking a crucial milestone from experimental conception to implementation. Acute toxicity estimation suggested that intermediates/products generated exhibited lower toxicity compared to TCHCl, indicating their practical applicability. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis successfully predicted significant electron transfer between Fe-C3N4 and TCHCl, indicating efficient interfacial interactions on the TCHCl surface. To ensure the environmental sustainability of Fe-C3N4, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to compared this photocatalyst with other commonly used emerging photocatalysts. The results demonstrated that Fe-C3N4 exhibits a two orders of magnitude lower CO2 equivalent emission compared to the ZnO photocatalyst, indicating a cost-effective and efficient synergistic photo-Fenton-like catalytic approach. This low-cost photocatalyst, moving from the laboratory to real-world wastewater applications, provides a powerful and more sustainable solution for the efficient treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics from livestock farming.

Oxygen vacancy and Ce ion co-synergize to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance of FeTiO3: An experimental and DFT study

Doping the iron titanate (FeTiO3) with rare earth element is considered as an effective method of enhancing its photocatalytic performance. In this work, the novel FeTiO3 doped with cerium (Ce) (Ce/FeTiO3) photocatalysts were designed and synthesized using the sol–gel method. The 10 mol% Ce/FeTiO3 photocatalyst displays excellent photocatalytic performance for degrading the tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), methylene blue (MB) and brilliant blue (BB). The degradation efficiencies are 97.50 % (TCH), 95.40 % (MB), and 84.60 % (BB), respectively, and the degradation rate constants (k) are 3.68, 2.91, and 7.12 times that of pure FeTiO3. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to study the photocatalytic degradation mechanism in depth. The results show that the content of oxygen vacancy is increased and the oxygen vacancy formation energy is significantly increased from 2.25 eV to 6.97 eV after doping the Ce ion, which can provide more active sites to degrade pollutants and enhance the photocatalytic performance of the FeTiO3. Furthermore, the Ce 4f orbital can narrow the bandgap and form the impurity level to capture the photoexcited electron, inhibiting the recombination rate of photocarriers in FeTiO3. This work is expected to provide a valuable insight into the Ce doped FeTiO3 photocatalyst, which is conductive to expanding the practical applications of FeTiO3-based photocatalyst.

The role of Cu and film thickness on the photocatalytic activity of mesoporous spin coated TiO2 films

Most practical applications of photocatalysts will involve coatings on an inert support; here we have examined how copper doping of spin coated porous TiO2 films affects their physical characteristics and photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic degradation of stearic acid was used as a measure of photocatalytic activity for catalysts spin coated from a sol-gel onto glass with 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5 wt% copper introduced into the catalyst lattice before gelation. The effects of spin coating speed on film thickness, structure and band gap were studied and the nature of the copper incorporated into the films examined with XPS and XANES measurements. Increased spin coating speeds reduces the thickness of the deposited films from ∼ 50 μm to ∼ 20 μm until a spin speed of ∼ 3000 rpm at which point non-Newtonian behaviour of the gels prevents further reductions in film thickness. A larger effect on film thickness is the presence of the added copper nitrate which results in thinner films. After calcining, XANES shows the bulk of the copper to be in a Cu(II) state but at the surface of the thinnest, most active films XPS shows only Cu(I). Photocatalytic activity is much more strongly affected by the presence of the copper than the thickness of the films with 0.1 wt% Cu catalysts as much as 10 times more active than the undoped catalysts. Increasing the copper content, however, reduces activity until at ∼ 5 wt% activity is lower than for the pure TiO2 films.

Gas-Phase Photocatalytic Coprocessing of CO2 - H2O(v) to Energy Products Promoted by the n,n-Junction In2O3@g-C3N4 under VIS-Light.

Carbon dioxide capture and utilization is a strategic technology for moving away from fossil-C. The conversion of CO2 into fuels demands energy and hydrogen that cannot be sourced from fossil-C. Co-processing of CO2 and water under solar irradiation will have a key role in the long-term for carbon-recycling and energy products production. This article discusses the synthesis, characterization and application of the two-phase composite photocatalyst, In2O3@g-C3N4, formed by thermal condensation of melamine in the presence of indium(III)nitrate. The composite exhibits a n,n-heterojunction between two n-type semiconductors, g-C3N4 and In2O3, leading to a more efficient charge separation. The composite has a flat band potential enabling it to effectively catalyze the reduction of CO2 in the gas phase to produce CO, CH4 and CH3OH. While the composite's overall photocatalytic efficiency is comparable to that of neat g-C3N4, its ability to promote multielectron-transfer and Proton Coupled to Electron Transfer (PCET) suggests that there is a potential for further optimization of its properties. The use of labelled 13CO2 has allowed us to clearly exclude that the reduced species are derived from the photocatalyst decomposition or the degradation of contaminants.

Tailored BiPO4/Bi‐MOF heterostructure photocatalysts with diverse morphologies for highly efficient organic pollutant degradation

Three distinct morphologies of Bi‐MOFs were innovatively employed as carriers, facilitating the formation of heterojunctions with BiPO4. Among these, the optimal photocatalytic performance was demonstrated by the type II heterojunction BiPO4/CAU‐17. Bi3+ competitively coordinated to crucially aid CAU‐17's transformation into a heterojunction, enhancing interfacial contact in BiPO4/CAU‐17. These photocatalysts effectively degraded dyes (RhB, MO, MB) and tetracycline (TC) under light exposure. RhB degradation was 3.33 times faster with BiPO4/CAU‐17 than BiPO4, 1.45 times faster than FCAU‐17, 1.36 times faster than FRCAU‐17, and 1.32 times faster than CAU‐17. Analyzing carrier density, Fermi level, and band structure through VB‐XPS, UV–VIS, and Mott–Schottky provided insights into enhanced separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs. This study presents a novel approach to tackle the aggregation challenge of the wide‐bandgap material BiPO4 by using suitable MOFs as carriers. It offers valuable perspectives for the design and application of photocatalysts in environmental remediation.

Piezo-enhanced photocatalysis of MoS2/Bi4O5Br2/PVDF-HFP film for wastewater purification

To date, the piezoelectric field has been demonstrated as a promising approach to inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carrier in photocatalyst applications. Herein we propose a MoS2/Bi4O5Br2/PVDF-HFP piezo-photocatalytic film in the organic pollutants remediation. MoS2/Bi4O5Br2 as the photocatalytic material is incorporated to poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)(PVDF-HFP) as the supporting layer via a simple phase transition method. The polarised electric field generated on PVDF-HFP and MoS2/Bi4O5Br2 under aeration synergised with the built-in electric field formed between MoS2/Bi4O5Br2 Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the interfacial charge transfer. The degradation rates of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under aeration and visible light irradiation in 60 min reached 98.9% and 92.2%, respectively. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations (DFT) further demonstrated the effective charge separation and transfer induced by the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism constructed by MoS2 composite with Bi4O5Br2, as well as the synergistic effect of the double electric field in favour of suppressing carrier recombination. This work provides an interesting solution for effectively combining piezoelectric catalysis with photocatalysis.

Construction of Cs2AgBiCl6/COF Heterojunction for Boosted Photocatalytic Thioester Oxidation.

Lead-free halide perovskites as a new kind of potential candidate for photocatalytic organic synthesis have attracted much attention recently. The rational heterojunction construction is regarded as an efficient strategy to delicately regulate their catalytic performances. Herein, a semi-conductive covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheet, C4N, is employed as the functional component to construct Cs2AgBiCl6/C4N (CABC/C4N) heterojunction. It is found that the C4N nanosheets with rich surface functional groups can serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites to manipulate the growth of CABC nanocrystals and afford close contact between each other, therefore facilitate the transfer and spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers, as verified by in situ X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy. Moreover, the oxygen affinity of C4N endows the heterojunctions with outstanding aerobic reactivity, thus improving the photocatalytic performance largely. The optimal CABC/C4N heterojunction delivers a thioanisole conversion efficiency of 100% after 6h, which is 2.2 and 7.7-fold of that of CABC and C4N. This work provides a new ideal for the design and application of lead-free perovskite heterojunction photocatalysts for organic reactions.
