Effects of different concentrate levels in AGRI-002E sorghum silage-based diets on nutrient intake and digestibility, ruminal pH and ammonia concentration, ruminal degradability, and microbial efficiency in beef cattle

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of increasing concentrate levels in AGRI-002E sorghum silage (SS)-based diets on nutrient intake and digestibility, ruminal pH and ammonia concentration, Nitrogen (N) balance, efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, and in situ degradability of complete diets. Five rumen-cannulated Nellore bulls (age = 8 ± 1.0 months; initial BW = 242 ± 5 kg) received five dietary treatments in a 5×5 Latin square experimental design. The dietary treatments consisted of five concentrate levels (0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 g of concentrate/kg on a DM basis) in SS-based diets. The experiment lasted 120 d, with five periods of 24 d. Each period consisted of 17 d for dietary adaptation, and 7 d for data collection. In situ degradability assays were conducted to estimate ruminal degradability. Total feces and urine collection were performed to estimate nutrient intake and digestibility and estimate N balance. Omasal and ruminal digesta collection were performed to estimate ruminal digestibility and ruminal parameters. Increasing concentrate levels in SS-based diets led to linear increases (P<0.001) in the intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and ether extract (EE). Neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein contamination (apNDF) and starch intake showed quadratic responses (P≤0.008). Ruminal digestibility of DM, OM and CP responded quadratically (P≤0.040), while apNDF exhibited linear decrease (P=0.003). Starch ruminal digestibility exhibited a cubic effect (P=0.016). Apparent total-tract digestibility of DM, OM, and EE increased linearly (P≤0.001), whereas apNDF, and CP digestibility decreased linearly (P≤0.012), and starch presented a quadratic effect (P=0.029). In situ ruminal degradation parameters increased linearly with higher concentrate levels (P<0.001). Ruminal pH exhibited a quadratic pattern (P=0.006), ammonia concentration linearly decreased (P=0.003). Total volatile fatty acids, and butyrate showed linear increases (P<0.001), acetate and propionate had quadratic effects (P<0.001), while the ratio Acetate to Propionate decreased linearly (P<0.001). N intake, fecal N excretion, retained N, total digestible nutrients, digestible organic matter, and microbial production increased linearly (P<0.001), although urine N excretion, urinary urea, and blood urea concentration decreased linearly (P<0.028). Therefore, increasing concentrate levels in AGRI-002E sorghum silage-based diets improve TDN intake, microbial protein synthesis efficiency, in situ ruminal degradability parameters, and nitrogen utilization. Moreover, our findings indicate that AGRI-002E sorghum silage demonstrates potential as a fiber source for high-concentrate diets. However, its effectiveness is limited without concentrate supplementation, emphasizing the importance of balanced dietary composition for optimal utilization in beef cattle.

Effects of diets supplemented with bioactive peptides on nutrient digestibility, immune cell responsiveness, and fecal characteristics, microbiota, and metabolites of adult cats.

Bioactive peptides (BP) are recognized for their ability to function as antioxidants and maintain lipid stability. They may have positive health effects, including antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, osteoprotective, gut health, and immunomodulatory properties, but are poorly tested in cats. Our primary objective was to determine the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of BP-containing kibble diets and assess how the fecal characteristics, metabolites, and microbiota were affected in adult cats. Our secondary objective was to test whether BP could impact blood oxidative stress markers and cytokine concentrations following transport stress. Twelve adult cats (4.83±0.37 yr; 4.76±0.14kg) were used in a replicated 4×4 Latin square design to test four extruded kibble diets: Control (no BP), Chicken (4% chicken BP), Marine1 (2% marine BP), and Marine2 (4% marine BP). Each experimental period lasted 28 d, with a 20-d adaptation phase, 5 d for fecal collection, 2 d for blood collection, and 1 d for transport stress testing (driven in vehicle in individual carriers for 45min). Salivary cortisol and blood oxidative stress markers and cytokines were measured after transport. Fecal microbiota data were evaluated using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and QIIME2. All other data were analyzed using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS, with P<0.05 being considered significant and P<0.10 considered trends. No differences were observed in animal health outcomes, with all cats remaining healthy and serum metabolites remaining within reference ranges. Cats fed the Marine2 diet had higher (P<0.05) ATTD of dry matter (84.5% vs. 80.9%) and organic matter (88.3% vs. 85.8%) than those fed the control diet. The ATTD of protein and energy tended to be higher (P<0.10) for cats fed the Marine2 diet. Fecal characteristics, metabolites, and bacterial alpha and beta diversity measures were not affected by treatment. However, the relative abundances of six bacterial genera were different (P<0.05) and two bacterial genera tended to be different (P<0.10) across treatments. Treatment did not alter salivary cortisol, blood oxidative stress markers, or blood cytokines after transport stress. Our data suggest that BP inclusion may increase nutrient digestibility and modify fecal microbiota and immune measures. More testing is required, however, to determine whether BP may provide additional benefits to cats.

PSIX-2 Effects of Diets Supplemented with Bioactive Peptides on Nutrient Digestibility, Immune Cell Responsiveness, and Fecal Characteristics, Microbiota, and Metabolites of Adult Cats

Our objective was to determine the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of bioactive peptide-containing kibble diets and assess how the fecal characteristics, metabolites, and microbiota were affected in adult cats. All procedures were approved by the University of Illinois IACUC. Twelve adult cats (4-5 yr; 4.84 kg avg. BW) were used in a replicated 4x4 Latin square design (n = 12/group) and fed to maintain BW. In each experimental period, cats were allotted to one of four extruded kibble experimental diets: control (4% dried chicken), chicken (4% chicken BP), marine1 (2% marine BP), and marine2 (4% marine BP). Health was confirmed by baseline serum chemistry and complete blood count analysis. Each experimental period lasted 28 days, with a 20-day adaptation phase, 5-day fecal collection [for nutrient digestibility, microbiota, metabolites, IgA, calprotectin, lactoferrin, pH, and dry matter (DM) analysis], 2-day blood collection (for serum chemistry, complete blood count, and immune cell functionality analysis), and 1 day for transport stress testing. For transport stress, cats were transported in a vehicle in individual carriers for 45 minutes. Upon return, their behavior was evaluated using the cat stress score (CSS). Saliva samples were collected within 15 minutes to measure cortisol concentrations and blood samples were collected after 3 hours to measure concentrations of oxidative stress markers [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA)] and inflammatory cytokines. Fecal microbiota data were evaluated using QIIME2. All other data were analyzed using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS, with P &amp;lt; 0.05 being considered significant. No significant differences were observed in animal health outcomes, with all cats remaining healthy within reference ranges. There were no differences in fecal characteristics, metabolites, and microbiota diversity. Cats fed the marine2 diet had a 3.61% greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) ATTD of DM and a 2.5% greater organic matter digestibility than those fed the control diet. The relative abundance of fecal Blautia was greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in cats fed the control diet than those fed the chicken diet, while relative abundance of fecal Slackia was greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in cats fed the control diet than those fed the chicken or marine1 diets. In comparison with cats fed the marine1 diet, the relative abundances of fecal Sellimonas and Bifidobacterium were less (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in cats fed the control diet. Neither transport stress nor diet impacted the oxidative stress markers, cytokines, cortisol, or CSS. Furthermore, the diet did not affect immune cell functionality. In conclusion, including BP, in particular marine2 at 4% inclusion to feline diets may increase nutrient digestibility and modify fecal microbiota.

306 Nutrient Digestibility and Dietary Energy Values in Growing Pigs Fed a Corn Distillers Dried Grains with Soluble (Cddgs)-Based Diet with Multi-Enzyme Supplementation

Abstract Dietary enzyme supplementation may enhance the digestibility and utilization of non-starch components of the diet by pigs. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a multi-carbohydrase enzyme (ENZ) in growing pigs for apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA), apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and energy values in a corn distillers dried grains with solubles (cDDGS)-based diet. A total of 12 ileal-cannulated pigs [initial body weight (BW) = 31.7 kg ± 3.04] were housed in individual metabolic crates for 21 days (Period 1) and subsequently transferred to individual floor pens for additional 28 days (Period 2). These animals were assigned to 2 diets (n = 6) in a completely randomized design (CRD). The diets were formulated on corn, soybean meal and cDDGS (30%) without (CON) or with ENZ supplementation. The ENZ (Proprietary xylanase/cellulase product, Kerry Inc.) was included in the diets at 200 g/tonne. Feeds were formulated to 1.15% SID lysine and met or exceeded nutrient requirements for growing pigs (NRC, 2012). Pigs were fed diets at three times maintenance energy requirement based on BW, which was assessed at every 2 weeks intervals throughout the study, Titanium dioxide was added to the diets as an indigestible marker. In period 1, pigs had 14 d of adaptation, followed by 4 d fecal and urine using the total collection method and 2 d ileal digesta collection. In period 2, pigs had 23 days adaptation, followed by 2 d fecal collection and 2 d illeal digesta collection. The AID of AA and gross energy (GE) and ATTD of nutrients and GE were calculated by an index method. Data were analyzed as a CRD, using pig as the experimental unit and enzyme supplementation as the main effect. Overall, average daily gain and gain:feed ratio of pigs were 857 and 918 g/d and 0.52 and 0.54 for CON and ENZ, respectively (P &amp;gt; 0.05). In period 1, ENZ supplementation improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the ATTD of dry matter (DM), ash, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and GE by 4.4%, 26.8%, 2.8%, 11.3%, and 3.6%, respectively. Also, ENZ tended to improve (P &amp;lt; 0.10) the ATTD of crude protein (CP) by 7.4% and AID of threonine, CP, and GE by 6.6%, 7.6%, and 13.7%, respectively. In period 2, ENZ improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the ATTD of DM, ash, OM, CP, NDF, and GE by 5%, 30.1%, 3.4%, 4.1%, 19.6%, and 4.2%, respectively. similarly, EMZ improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the AID of threonine, CP, and GE by 4.2%, 6.0%, and 6.4%, respectively. In conclusion, multi-carbohydrase supplementation in a corn-SBM diet with 30% cDDGS increased the digestibility of nutrients and energy in growing pigs and may represent a useful strategy to optimize the utilization of such raw material.

Comparing dehulled hemp meal and canola meal as a protein supplement for lactating dairy cows

Effects of replacing canola meal with dehulled hemp meal in the diet of lactating dairy cows on the dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, milk fatty acid profile, blood metabolites, total-tract nutrient digestibility, and transfer of cannabinoids were determined in 12 lactating, nonpregnant Holstein cows. These cows were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with three 3-wk experimental periods consisting of 2 wk of adaptation and 1 wk of sampling. Cows received basal partial mixed rations supplemented with either 15% dry matter (DM) canola meal (CM15), 15% DM dehulled hemp meal (HM15), or 7.5% DM dehulled hemp meal and 7.5% DM canola meal (CM7.5HM7.5). Diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, but the HM15 and CM7.5HM7.5 diets contained, on average 1.2 percentage units more crude protein (CP) that the CM15 diet. The CP of the dehulled hemp meal contained less soluble protein than that of canola meal. Hence, the intake of soluble protein did not differ among diets. Canola meal contained less crude fat than hemp seed meal (3.46% vs. 8.25% DM). The lipid fraction of canola meal fat contained more oleic acid (C18:1 cis-9; 47.3 vs. 14.9 g/100 g of fatty acids, FA) and vaccenic acid (18:1 cis-11; 13.7 vs. 1.2 g/100 g of FA) and less linoleic acid (C18:2n-6; 21.9 vs. 55.7 g/100 g of FA) and α linolenic acid (C18:3n-3; 3.2 vs. 8.9 g/100 g of FA) than the lipid fraction of hemp seed meal. The hemp seed meal contained 4.9 µg/g cannabidiol, 5.1 µg/g cannabidiolic acid, and 0.1 µg/g tertahydroxycannabinolic acid A. Treatments did not differ in DMI, yields of milk, milk protein and milk fat, total-tract neutral detergent fiber digestibility, and blood plasma concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified FA. Apparent total-tract DM digestibility was lowest in the HM15 treatment, whereas the CP digestibility and the concentrations of urea in blood, urine, and milk were lowest in the CM15 treatment. Cannabinoids were not detected in urine, milk, and blood plasma. Replacing canola meal with hemp seed meal increased milk fat contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which were 3.42, 3.90, and 4.25 g/100 g of FA for the CM15, CM7.5HM7.5, and HM15 treatments, respectively. Especially, the milk fat contents of 18:2n-6 (1.99 vs. 1.56 g/100 g FA) and 18:3n-3 (0.31 vs. 0.43 g/100 g FA) were increased by hemp meal feeding. Especially, the milk fat contents of 18:2n-6 (1.99 vs. 1.56 g/100 g FA) and 18:3n-3 (0.31 vs. 0.43 g/100 g FA) were increased by hemp meal feeding. Our data show that hemp seed meal is a suitable and safe replacement for canola meal as a feed for lactating dairy cows and that this replacement increases CP digestibility and urea in urine, milk, and blood plasma, as well the PUFA content of milk fat.

Evaluation of the red seaweed Mazzaella japonica as a feed additive for beef cattle

Supplementing ruminant diets with macroalgae is gaining interest globally because bromoform-containing seaweeds (e.g., Asparagopsis spp.) have been shown to be highly effective enteric methane (CH4) inhibitors. Some alternative seaweeds decrease in vitro CH4 production, but few have been evaluated in animals. This study examined the effects of including the red seaweed Mazzaella japonica in the diet of beef cattle on dry matter intake (DMI), rumen fermentation, digestibility, nitrogen (N) utilization, and enteric CH4 production. Six ruminally cannulated, mature beef heifers (824 ± 47.1 kg) were used in a double 3 × 3 Latin square with 35-d periods. The basal diet consisted of 52% barley silage, 44% barley straw, and 4% vitamin and mineral supplement [dry matter (DM) basis]. The treatments were (DM basis): 0% (control), 1%, and 2% M. japonica. The DMI increased quadratically (P = 0.025) with the inclusion of M. japonica, such that the DMI of heifers consuming 1% was greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) than that of control heifers. The apparent total-tract digestibility of DM decreased linearly (P = 0.002) with the inclusion of M. japonica, but there were no treatment differences in the digestibility of organic matter, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber, or starch. The level of M. japonica linearly (P &amp;lt; 0.001) increased the N intake of the heifers. Fecal N excretion linearly increased (P = 0.020) with M. japonica, but there were no differences in total urinary N excretion, N fractions (allantoin, uric acid), total purine derivatives, microbial purine derivatives absorbed, microbial N flow, or retained N. There were no treatment effects on rumen pH or total volatile fatty acids (VFAs); however, adding M. japonica to the diet quadratically (P = 0.023) decreased the proportion of acetate, whereas 1% inclusion decreased the acetate proportion. Methane production (g/day) decreased quadratically (P = 0.037), such that the heifers receiving 2% M. japonica produced 9.2% less CH4 than control animals; however, CH4 yield (g/kg DMI) did not differ among treatments. We conclude that supplementing a forage-based diet with up to 2% M. japonica failed to lower the enteric CH4 yield of beef heifers. M. japonica can be used in diets to help meet the CP requirements of cattle, but inclusion rates may be limited by high inorganic matter proportions. When comprising up to 2% of the diet, M. japonica cannot be recommended as a CH4 inhibitor for beef cattle fed on high-forage diets.

Nutritional values of cottonseed meal from different sources fed to gestating and non-pregnant sows.

This study set out to determine the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of the nutrients and energy in six cottonseed meal (CSM) feedstuffs fed to pregnant and non-pregnant sows. The six types of CSM were: two expelled CSMs with crude protein (CP) levels of 40.67% and 44.64%, and four solvent-extracted CSMs with CP levels of 45.18%, 51.16%, 56.44%, and 59.63%. Fourteen gestating sows (at the 4 th parity with body weights of 220.6 ± 18.4kg at days 30 of gestation) and 14 non-pregnant sows (after the 3 rd parity with body weights of 219 ± 14.6kg) were assigned to a replicated 7 × 3 Youden square design with seven diets and three periods. The seven diets included an entirely corn-based diet and six diets each containing 20.0% of the six CSMs tested. Each period included a 5-day acclimation to the experimental diets, followed by a 5-day period during which urine and feces were collected. Significant differences were found among the six CSM diets, regardless of reproductive stage, regarding: 1) the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (P < 0.05) and 2) the ATTD of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and CP and the gross energy (GE) (P < 0.01). Non-pregnant sows had a greater ATTD of OM and CP (P < 0.01) compared with gestating sows. The digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of the six CSM samples ranged from 12.48 to 17.15 MJ/kg and 11.35 to 15.88 MJ/kg, respectively, for non-pregnant sows, and from 12.86 to 16.41 MJ/kg and 12.43 to 14.72 MJ/kg, respectively, for gestating sows. However, the DE, ME, and ME:DE ratios of each CSM were similar between gestating and non-pregnant sows. DE and ME were negatively correlated with NDF and ADF, respectively, but were positively corrected with CP level (P < 0.01). Collectively, the DE, ME, and nutrient digestibility of CSM varied greatly according to the chemical compositions, and CSMs with higher protein and lower fiber levels had greater DE and ME levels.

Evaluation of high-protein diets differing in protein source in healthy adult dogs.

Given the dynamic market for protein-based ingredients in the pet food industry, demand continues to increase for both plant- and animal-based options. Protein sources contain different amino acid (AA) profiles and vary in digestibility, affecting protein quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of canine diets differing in protein source and test their effects on serum metabolites and fecal characteristics, metabolites, and microbiota of healthy adult dogs consuming them. Four extruded diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and meet the nutrient needs for adult dogs at maintenance, with the primary difference being protein source: 1) fresh deboned, dried, and spray-dried chicken (DC), 2) chicken by-product meal (CBPM), 3) wheat gluten meal (WGM), and 4) corn gluten meal (CGM). Twelve adult spayed female beagles (body weight [BW] = 9.9 ± 1.0 kg; age = 6.3 ± 1.1 yr) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design (n = 12/treatment). Each period consisted of a 22-d adaptation phase, 5 d for fecal collection, and 1 d for blood collection. Fecal microbiota data were analyzed using QIIME 2.2020.8. All other data were analyzed using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS version 9.4. Fecal scores were higher (P < 0.05; looser stools) in dogs fed DC or CBPM than those fed WGM or CGM, but all remained within an appropriate range. Dry matter ATTD was lower (P < 0.05) in dogs fed CBPM or CGM than those fed DC or WGM. Crude protein ATTD was lower (P < 0.05) in dogs fed DC or CGM than those fed WGM. Dogs fed CBPM had lower (P < 0.05) organic matter, crude protein, and energy ATTD than those fed the other diets. Fecal indole was higher (P < 0.05) in dogs fed CBPM than those fed WGM. Fecal short-chain fatty acids were higher (P < 0.05) in dogs fed DC than those fed CGM. Fecal branched-chain fatty acids were higher (P < 0.05) in dogs fed DC or CBPM than those fed WGM. Fecal ammonia was higher (P < 0.05) in dogs fed DC or CBPM than those fed WGM or CGM. The relative abundances of three bacterial phyla and nine bacterial genera were shifted among treatment groups (P < 0.05). Considering AA profiles and digestibility data, the DC diet protein sources provided the highest quality protein without additional AA supplementation, but the animal-based protein diets resulted in higher fecal proteolytic metabolites. Further studies evaluating moderate dietary protein concentrations are needed to better compare plant- and animal-based protein sources.

Effects of Overfeeding on the DIGESTIVE Efficiency, VOLUNTARY Physical Activity Levels, and Fecal Characteristics and Microbiota of Adult Cats.

The incidence of feline obesity continues to rise despite it being a preventable disease. There are many risks and health perturbations associated with obesity, with several of those impacting a pet's quality of life, wellness, and longevity. Feline obesity is commonly studied, but most research has been focused on weight loss rather than weight gain. To our knowledge, feline studies have not examined the implications of overfeeding and weight gain on gastrointestinal transit time (GTT) nor the association it has with the fecal microbiota. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of overfeeding and weight gain on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), GTT, blood hormones, serum metabolites, hematology, fecal microbiota populations, and voluntary physical activity of cats. Eleven lean adult spayed female cats [body weight (BW) = 4.11 ± 0.43kg; body condition score (BCS) = 5.41 ± 0.3; age = 5.22 ± 0.03 y] were used in a longitudinal weight gain study. After a 2-wk baseline phase, cats were allowed to overeat for 18wk. A commercially available complete and balanced diet was fed during the baseline phase to identify intake needed to maintain BW. Cats were then fed the same diet ad libitum to induce weight gain. Fecal samples, blood samples, and voluntary physical activity data were collected at baseline (wk 0) and 6, 12, and 18wk after weight gain. Fecal samples were collected for microbiota analysis, determination of ATTD, and GTT measurement while blood samples were collected for serum chemistry, hematology, and insulin and leptin measurements. Microbiota data were evaluated using QIIME2. All other measures were evaluated statistically using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS using repeated measures analysis, with time effects being the focus. A P<0.05 was considered significant. The ATTD of dry matter (P=0.0061), organic matter (P=0.0130), crude protein (P<0.0001), fat (P=0.0002) and gross energy (P=0.0002) and GTT (P=0.0418) decreased with overfeeding and weight gain. Fecal bacterial alpha diversity measures were unchanged, but fecal bacterial beta diversity was impacted (P<0.05) with overfeeding and weight gain. The relative abundances of 16 bacterial genera, including Bifidobacterium, Collinsella, Erysipelatoclostridium were affected (P<0.05) by overfeeding and weight gain. In conclusion, overfeeding and subsequent weight gain reduced ATTD, reduced GTT, and caused changes to the fecal microbial community of adult cats.

Influence of fiber-rich coproducts on nutrient and energy digestibility and utilization in sows.

Coproducts from the food and agricultural industries can potentially be used to replace concentrated high-value grain crops in diets for sows. The coproducts are typically high in fiber and with diverse composition. Energy digestibility and utilization are generally high in sows fed fiber-rich feedstuff, but nitrogen digestion and utilization may be compromised. The purpose of this study was to quantify the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and utilization of energy and nitrogen in empty nonlactating sows fed with six different fiber-rich coproducts (FRCP). Brewers spent grain (BSG), pea hull (PH), potato pulp (PP), pectin residue (PR), sugar beet pulp (SBP), and seed residue (SR) were mixed into a basal diet (BD) with as high an inclusion level as possible, or the BD was fed solely to eight empty sows in a Youden square incomplete cross-over design. The collection period consisted of a total collection period of 5 d, of which 2 d were in a respiration chamber. The sows had a gross energy (GE) intake between 28.5 and 42.3 MJ/d; greatest for the PH fed sows and lowest for the PP fed sows. The ATTD of dry matter, organic matter, GE, and N did not differ among the BD and the PH and SBP fed sows, while the ATTDs of all nutrients and energy were intermediate for PR and BSG lowest in SR fed sows (P < 0.01). The differences were caused by variation in digestible and metabolizable energy content of the FRCP ingredients, which was lowest for SR, intermediate for PR followed by BSG and greatest for SBP, PP, and PH (P < 0.001). Total heat production (HP) did not differ among treatments but the nonactivity related HP was highest in SR fed sows and lowest in PH and SBP fed sows (P < 0.05). Retention of energy was greatest following the PH and BD (7.42 and 2.19 MJ/d, respectively), intermediate for PP, SBP, and BSG fed sows (-0.22 to -0.69 MJ/d) and lowest for the PR and SR fed sows (-4.26 and -6.17 MJ/d, respectively; P < 0.001). From a sow feeding perspective, SBP and PH have the potential to partly replace high-value grain crops due to high ATTD of all nutrients and because sows can efficiently utilize energy and protein. In contrast, SR and PR show low ATTD of nutrients and energy, thereby compromising the nutritive value. PP and BSG also have the potential to be included in sow diets, but caution should be taken because of compromised N utilization and thereby increased environmental impact.

Effects of Aspergillus oryzae prebiotic on dietary energy and nutrient digestibility of growing pigs.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Aspergillus oryzae prebiotic (AOP) on nutrient digestibility in growing pigs fed high-fiber diets. Eighteen growing barrows (initial body weight = 50.6 ± 4.9 kg) were surgically equipped with a T-cannula at the distal ileum. Corn and soybean meal-based diets were formulated with fiber from cereal grain byproducts corn (distillers dried grains with solubles, DDGS), rice (rice bran, RB), or wheat (wheat middlings, WM) to meet or exceed all nutrient requirements for 50 to 75 kg growing pigs. Three additional diets were formulated to contain 0.05% AOP supplemented at the expense of corn in the DDGS diet (DDGS + AOP), RB diet (RB + AOP), and WM diet (WM + AOP). All diets contained 0.5% of titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. Pigs were allotted randomly to a triplicated 6 × 2 Youden square design with six diets and two successive periods. Ileal digesta and fecal samples were collected for 2 d after a 21-d adaptation period, and dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and ash were analyzed to calculate apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD). Standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) was calculated by correcting AID with basal endogenous AA losses from the same set of pigs. Pigs fed the DDGS+AOP diet had greater (P < 0.05) AID of EE compared with those fed the DDGS diet. However, supplementation of AOP did not (P > 0.05) affect AID of GE, DM, CP, NDF, ash or SID of AA of any high-fiber diet. Supplementation of 0.05% AOP increased (P < 0.05) ATTD of DM, GE, CP, NDF, and ash in DDGS, RB, and WM diets. Diet digestible energy was 35 kcal/kg greater (P < 0.05) in pigs fed AOP supplemented diets compared with those fed diets without AOP. In conclusion, supplementation of AOP increased ATTD of nutrients and energy value in high-fiber diets containing DDGS, RB, or WM.

Evaluation of Torula yeast as a protein source in extruded feline diets.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of a Torula yeast (TY) on diet processing, palatability, and total tract nutrient digestibility in extruded feline diets. Four dietary treatments were compared, differing by protein source: TY, pea protein concentrate (PP), soybean meal (SM), and chicken meal (CM). Diets were produced using a single-screw extruder under similar processing conditions. Palatability assessment was conducted as a split plate design where both first choice and intake ratio (IR) were determined. Apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients was estimated using Titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. During diet production, specific mechanical energy of TY and SM (average of 187 kJ/kg) was greater (P < 0.05) than for PP (138 kJ/kg); however, CM was similar to all treatments (167 kJ/kg). Kibble diameter, piece volume, and sectional expansion ratio were greatest for TY (P < 0.05). Additionally, both bulk and piece density were lowest (P < 0.05) for TY. Kibble hardness was lower for TY and SM (P < 0.05; average of 2.10 Newtons) compared to CM and PP (average of 2.90 Newtons). During the palatability trial, TY was chosen first a greater number of times than CM (P < 0.05; 36 vs. 4, respectively), but differences were not found between TY and PP (25 vs. 15, respectively) or TY and SM (24 vs. 16, respectively). Cats had a greater IR (P < 0.05) of TY compared to CM and PP (0.88 and 0.73, respectively). However, there was no difference in preference between TY and SM. ATTD of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) was greater (P < 0.05) for CM (87.43% and 91.34%, respectively) than other treatments. Both DM and OM ATTD of TY were similar (P < 0.05) to PP and SM (average of 86.20% and average of 89.76%, respectively). Ash ATTD was greater (P < 0.05) for cats fed TY and SM (average of 37.42%), intermediate for PP (32.79%), and lowest for CM (23.97%). Crude protein (CP) ATTD of TY was similar to all other treatments (average of 89.97%), but fat ATTD was lower (P < 0.05; 92.52%) than other treatments (93.76% to 94.82%). Gross energy ATTD was greater (P < 0.05) for CM than TY (90.97% vs. 90.18%, respectively); however, TY was similar to PP and SM (average of 90.22%). Total dietary fiber ATTD was similar between TY and CM (average of 66.20%) and greater (P < 0.05) than PP and SM (average of 58.70%). The TY used in this study facilitated diet formation, increased diet preference, and was highly digestible when fed to cats.

PSX-A-6 Energy and Nutrient Digestibility in Hybrid rye Ground to two Particle Sizes and fed without or with Multicarbohydrase Supplementation to Growing Pigs

Abstract Newly breeded hybrid fall rye (HFR) with improved ergot resistance can be an alternative energy source for pigs. Sixteen ileal-cannulated barrows (initial BW = 18.2 ± 1.0 kg) were used to determine the effects of particle size (PS) and multicarbohydrase (MC) supplementation on energy and nutrient digestibility in HFR. Pigs were randomly assigned to 1 of 8 diets in a replicated 8 × 3 incomplete Latin square design. Each period lasted 9 d, with the first 5 d being for adaptation followed by 2 d each for fecal and ileal digesta collection. Two HFR varieties (KWS Bono and KWS Gatano) were hammer milled to a coarse (1,111 μm and 1,210 μm) or fine (594 μm and 717 μm) PS. Diets contained 92.9% HFR as the only source of protein without or with MC supplementation and 0.3% titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS, with the final model having variety, PS, MC supplementation, and their interactions as the main effects. There were no interaction effects of variety, PS, and MC supplementation on the variables measured. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in KWS Bono than in KWS Gatano. The ATTD of gross energy (GE) and NDF tended to be greater (P &amp;lt; 0.10) in finely than in coarsely ground HFR. MC supplementation increased (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the ATTD of DM (83.5 vs. 84.6%) and GE (83.1 vs. 84.2%) and tended to increase (P &amp;lt; 0.10) the ATTD of NDF in HFR. In conclusion, the nutrient digestibility of HFR can be affected by its variety, and fine PS and MC supplementation could improve the nutrient digestibility in HFR fed to growing pigs.

270 Effects of Different Watering Options on Standardized Ileal Digestibility of Amino Acids and net Energy in Diets fed to Growing Pigs

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that different watering options affect the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA), apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM) and gross energy (GE), and concentration of net energy (NE) by growing pigs. A corn-soybean meal-based diet was used in both experiments. There were 3 treatments: 1) dry feeder plus a water nipple located outside the feeder, 2) wet-dry feeder with the water nipple inside the feeder, and 3) combined system with a water nipple both inside the feeder and also an outside nipple. In Exp. 1, pigs (n = 6; initial weight = 27.53 kg) that were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum were allotted to the 3 treatments using a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 6 pigs and three 7-d periods. All pigs were fed an N-free diet for an additional period to determine basal endogenous losses of AA. Chromic oxide was added to all diets and ileal digesta were collected according to standard procedures. In Exp. 2, 24 pigs (initial weight = 50.23 kg) were allotted to the 3 treatments using a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 6 chambers (i.e., 4 pigs per chamber) and three 15-d periods. Oxygen consumption and CO2 and CH4 productions were measured during fed and fasting states and fecal and urine samples were collected. In both experiments, pigs were allowed ad libitum access to feed and water. Results indicated that there were no differences among watering options for SID of AA, feed intake, total and fasting heat production, ATTD of DM and GE, or NE in diet. In conclusion, different watering options did not affect the digestibility of AA, DM, and GE and concentration of NE in a corn-soybean meal diet fed to growing pigs.

Effects of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) and 1-hydroxycholecalciferol (1-OH-D3) on serum bone biomarkers and calcium and phosphorus balance and concentrations of energy in diets without or with microbial phytase fed to sows in late gestation.

The objective was to test the hypothesis that supplementation of diets for gestating sows with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) or 1-hydroxycholecalciferol (1-OH-D3) affects serum biomarkers for bone and increases Ca and P balance and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy (GE), and the concentrations of digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) in diets without or with microbial phytase. Sixty multiparous sows were allotted to 1 of 6 diets. Diets were formulated using a 3 × 2 factorial with 3 inclusions of supplemental vitamin D metabolite (no metabolite, 25-OH-D3, or 1-OH-D3) and 2 inclusion levels of microbial phytase (0 or 1,000 units). Sows were housed individually in metabolism crates and feces and urine were collected quantitatively. Results indicated that there was no difference in the ATTD of dry matter (DM) and GE and concentration of DE among the 3 diets containing microbial phytase, but the ATTD of DM and GE and concentration of DE was greater (P < 0.05) in diets containing 1-OH-D3 compared with the diet without a vitamin D metabolite if phytase was not used (interaction; P < 0.05). In diets without microbial phytase, ME was greater in diets containing either one of the 2 vitamin D metabolites than in the diet without a vitamin D metabolite, but among diets with microbial phytase, the ME of the 1-OH-D3 diet was less than of the 25-OH-D3 diet (interaction; P < 0.05). No effect of microbial phytase on concentrations of DE and ME was observed. There was no interaction between supplementation of microbial phytase and vitamin D metabolites for Ca and P balances, and regardless of metabolite supplementation, use of microbial phytase increased (P < 0.05) the ATTD and retention of Ca and P. Regardless of dietary phytase, the ATTD and retention of Ca and P increased (P < 0.05) for sows fed a diet containing one of the vitamin D metabolites compared with sows fed the diet without a vitamin D metabolite. Serum biomarkers for bone resorption or bone tissue synthesis were not affected by experimental diets. In conclusion, the ATTD of DM and GE, concentrations of DE and ME, and Ca and P balance in phytase-free diets fed to sows in late gestation were increased by supplementation with 1-OH-D3 or 25-OH-D3, but no differences between the 2 vitamin D metabolites were observed. Supplementation of diets with microbial phytase increased Ca and P balance, but did not affect DE and ME of diets.

Comparative digestion and fermentation characteristics of low-tannin or high-tannin sorghum grain in the porcine gastrointestinal tract.

High-tannin sorghum grain (HTS) has been previously proved to contain lower apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients than low-tannin sorghum grain (LTS) for pigs. This study was conducted to identify in which segments (foregut or hindgut) of the intestinal tract of pigs the digestion of nutrients was mostly influenced, and to compare the digestion and fermentation characteristics of LTS and HTS in the porcine gastrointestinal tract. In experiment 1, HTS and LTS were digested by porcine pepsin and pancreatin to simulate small intestine digestion, and subsequently the undigested residues were incubated with fresh pig cecal digesta as inoculums for 48 h to simulate the porcine large intestine fermentation in vitro. The results revealed that the in vitro digestibility of air-dry matter, gross energy (GE), and crude protein (CP) was lower (P < 0.05) in HTS than that in LTS, regardless of the simulated small intestine digestion or large intestine fermentation. The enzymatically unhydrolyzed residue of HTS decreased the accumulative gas production excluding the first 3 h and the short-chain fatty acid concentration including acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid in the fermented solutions (P < 0.05), although it provided more nutrients as fermentation substrates (P < 0.05). In experiment 2, 12 crossbred barrows (25.5 ± 2.5 kg body weight) with a T-cannula inserted in the distal ileum were randomly allotted to two diets (N = 6) to determine nutrient digestibility in the foregut (AID, apparent ileal digestibility) and in the hindgut of pigs (HGD, hindgut disappearance). The study lasted 10 d, with a 5 d adaption to the diets followed by a 3 d collection of feces and then a 2 d collection of ileal digesta. Diets included 96.6% HTS or LTS as the only source of dietary energy and nitrogen. The AID and ATTD of dry matter, GE, and CP in HTS were lower than those in LTS (P < 0.05). There was no difference in HGD of nutrients between LTS and HTS. Eight out of fifteen amino acids in HTS had lower AID values (P < 0.05). In conclusion, HTS provided lower small intestine digestibility of nutrients and lower large intestine fermentation parameters, implying that condensed tannins in sorghum grain may impede the nutrient digestibility in the foregut and limit the fermentability in the hindgut segment of pigs. Hence, digestion and fermentation characteristics of sorghum grain may vary depending on the condensed tannins.

Determination of metabolisable and net energy contents of corn fed to Arbor Acres broilers and Beijing You chickens.

This study was done to compare the energy and nutrient utilisation of corn in Arbor Acres (AA) broilers and Beijing You (BJY) chickens. BJY chickens with the same age as AA broilers were named BJY1 chickens, and with the same body weight as AA broilers were named BJY2 chickens. Three groups of broilers (36 male AA broilers, 72 male BJY1 chickens, and 36 male BJY2 chickens), 2 treatments per group, 6 replicates per treatment, 3 chickensor 6 chickens per replicate. During each period, birds were fed in chambers for 11 days, including 5 days for adaptation to the feed, 3 days for excreta and gas data collectionand another 3 days for fasting were recorded. Results showed that the fasting heat production (FHP) of AA, BJY1and BJY2 chickens gradually stabilised after fasting for 72 h, the FHP of AA, BJY1and BJY2 chickens were 486.54, 536.22and 548.90 KJ/kg BW0.70 /dayrespectively. AA broilers had significantly lower (p < 0.01) apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of starch in corn than that of BJY1 and BJY2 chickens, whereas there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) observed in ATTD of dry matter, crude protein, ether extractand crude fibre. The apparent metabolisable energy (AME) values of corn in AA, BJY1and BJY2 chickens were 16.18, 16.81, and 16.39 MJ/kg dry matter (DM)and the corresponding nitrogen-corrected AME (AMEn) values were 15.71, 16.38and 15.99 MJ/kg DMrespectively. The net energy (NE) values of corn in AA, BJY1and BJY2 chickens were 12.03, 12.28and 11.97 MJ/kg DMrespectively. In conclusion, BJY chickens had a higher maintenance energy requirement than that of AA broilers, and AA broilers of the same age and weight as BJY chickens showed no significant differences in AME, AMEnand NE values of corn.

Impact of multicarbohydrase and phytase on apparent and standardized digestibility, energy, and nutrient balance in broilers fed sunflower meal

The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) (trial 1) and the apparent (AID) and standardized (SID) ileal digestibility of the amino acids (AAs) (trial 2) in sunflower meal (SM) were evaluated with the addition of exogenous multicarbohydrase (MC) and phytase (Phy). A total of 80 28-day-old broilers were allotted in a completely randomized design to receive treatments up to 35 days of age. A 2 × 2 factorial design was used to determine the enzyme effects, on the ATTD of dry matter, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and fibre, energy use, and the AID and SID of AA, in five replicate cages. Synergic effect was identified between MC and Phy on the ATTD of minerals and fibre. The same benefit occurred with the isolated inclusion of MC on the ATTD of dry matter, nitrogen, and energy of SM. The effects of enzyme inclusion on the AID and SID of AAs in SM, established by comparing the means, suggested a higher effect to the addition of MC + Phy combibation. Supplementation of MC or combination with MC and Phy was a viable alternative to increase the ATTD of nutrients and energy. The addition MC + Phy higher AID and SID of AA from SM.

92 Effects of Increasing Dose of a Novel E. coli Phytase on Total Tract Digestibility of Minerals and Energy in Pigs

Abstract The objective was to test the hypothesis that an increasing dose of a novel thermostable 6-phytase that was derived from E. coli and expressed in a Pichia Pastoris yeast (Superphy; Hanley International, LLC, Belmont, MA) increases apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of minerals and energy by pigs. Forty-eight barrows (initial weight: 22.61 kg) were housed in metabolism crates and fed 6 diets based on corn and soybean meal. The positive control (PC) diet contained P at the requirement. The negative control (NC) diet contained no feed phosphate, but contained 0, 250, 500, 1,000, or 2,000 phytase unit/kg. Feces were collected for 4 d after 5 d of adaptation. Dried and ground fecal samples were analyzed for dry matter, energy, Ca, P and other minerals. Data were analyzed using a model that included diet as fixed variable and contrast statements were used to compare PC and NC diets and to demonstrate linear and quadratic effects of phytase. Results indicated that ATTD of dry matter and energy and concentration of digestible energy in NC without phytase were greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) than in PC, but ATTD of ash, K, Mg, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn was not different between the 2 diets. There was no effect of phytase on ATTD of dry matter and energy or on digestible energy in diets. As dietary phytase increased, ATTD of ash and Mg increased (linear, P &amp;lt; 0.05) and ATTD of Ca and the standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of P also increased (quadratic, P &amp;lt; 0.05), but ATTD of K, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn was not affected by phytase. In conclusion, the novel enhanced E. Coli based phytase increased ATTD of Ca, P, and Mg and STTD of P if included in a diet containing Ca and P below requirements.

Growth performance, immune status, gastrointestinal tract ecology, and function in nursery pigs fed enzymatically treated yeast without or with pharmacological levels of zinc.

Growth performance and physiological responses of nursery piglets when fed enzymatically treated yeast (HY40) and pharmacological ZnO alone or in combination were investigated. A total of 144 pigs (21 d old, BW 7.32 ± 0.55 kg) were placed in 36 pens (4 pigs/pen). Pigs were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments (n = 9): 1) control corn-wheat-soybean meal diet (control), 2) control + HY40 (HY40), 3) control + (ZnO) and 4) control + HY40 + ZnO (HY40+ZnO). Inclusion of HY40 and ZnO was 0.5% and 3,000 ppm in phase I (days 0 to 14), respectively, and halved in phase II (days 15 to 42). All diets contained 0.2% TiO2 for determination of apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of components. Body weight and feed disappearance were recorded weekly. One pig per pen was killed for organ weights, blood, and tissue samples on day 14. Except for phase II, when HY40 + ZnO pigs had greater average daily feed intake (P = 0.004) than all other treatments, there were no (P > 0.05) interactions between HY40 and ZnO on growth performance. Pigs fed HY40 or ZnO containing diets were heavier (P < 0.05) than pigs fed without by the end of the study. On day 14, pigs fed additives exhibited higher (P ≤ 0.009) ATTD of dry matter (DM) and gross energy (GE) than control pigs. On day 28, pigs fed control, HY40, and HY40 + ZnO had greater (P ≤ 0.022) ATTD of DM, crude protein, and GE than piglets fed ZnO only. Pigs fed HY40 + ZnO had lower ileal digesta Escherichia coli concentration (P < 0.05) than HY40 and control pigs. Ileal digesta of pigs fed ZnO diets had higher lactobacillus to E. coli ratio (1.44 vs. 1.20; P = 0.001), exhibited higher concentrations of acetic (P = 0.01) and butyric acid (P = 0.01) but lower lactic (P = 0.02) and total short chain fatty acids (P = 0.033) than pigs fed non-ZnO diets. Greater (P < 0.05) mRNA expression of nutrient transporters, tight junction proteins, and fecal excretion of zinc (Zn) was observed in ZnO pigs relative to non-ZnO pigs. Pigs fed HY40 diets had greater (P = 0.002) villus height to crypt depth ratio (VH:CD) than non-HY40 pigs. The concentration of plasma IgA was higher (P = 0.04) in HY40 + ZnO pigs relative to other pigs, whereas HY40 pigs showed higher (P < 0.001) jejunal IgA than non-HY40 pigs. Although the mode of action of HY40 and ZnO differed, the present study indicated that HY40 improved growth performance and jejunal function and immunity, making HY40 an effective alternative to pharmacological ZnO in nursery pigs feeding programs.
