Application of Digital Twin Technology in Synthetic Aperture Radar Ground Moving Target Intelligent Detection System

In recent years, the detection performance of SAR-GMTI (synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication) algorithm based on deep learning has always been limited by insufficient measured data due to the heavy operation complexity and high cost of real SAR systems. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an overall DT-based implementation framework for SAR ground moving target intelligent detection tasks. In particular, by virtue of a SAR imaging algorithm, a high-fidelity twin replica of SAR moving targets is established in digital space through parameter traversal based on the prior target characteristics of the obtained measured datasets. Then, the constructed SAR twin datasets is fed into the neural network model to train an intelligent detector by fully learning features of the moving targets and preset the SAR scene in the twin space, which can realize the robust detection of ground moving targets in related practical scenarios with no need for multiple and complex field experiments. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is verified on the MiniSAR measured system, and a comparison with traditional CFAR detection method is given simultaneously.

Bistatic SAR Clutter-Ridge Matched STAP Method for Nonstationary Clutter Suppression

Clutter suppression is a challenging task in synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI). In general, sufficient secondary samples are not easily acquired due to the nonstationary and nonhomogeneous characteristics of bistatic SAR (BiSAR) clutter, resulting in worse clutter suppression results. Recently, space–time adaptive processing based on sparse recovery (SR-STAP) has been developed since its better clutter suppression performance with less samples. However, since the off-grid problem in space–time domain caused by BiSAR’s separate configuration, existing SR-STAP would suffer from severe performance degradation. To address this problem, a clutter-ridge matched STAP (CRM-STAP) method for BiSAR nonstationary clutter suppression is proposed. First, clutter distribution modeling with arbitrary BiSAR configuration is applied to accurately obtain the clutter ridge in space–time domain. Then, keystone transform and time-division processing are applied to correct range cell migration and eliminate Doppler frequency migration, respectively. Next, to solve the off-grid problem, the CRM dictionary is reconstructed via adaptive gradient method, which is established along the direction of clutter ridge and its orthogonal direction. Then, with the constructed CRM dictionary, the clutter covariance matrix (CCM) estimation process is transformed to a multimeasured vector optimization problem, and it can be directly solved by the sparse Bayesian learning algorithm. Finally, based on the estimated CCM, the CRM-STAP filter is built to suppress the nonstationary clutter effectively. Compared with the existing STAP and SR-STAP methods, this method can avoid the performance degradation in clutter suppression caused by the off-grid problem and overcomes the strong nonstationary problem of BiSAR clutter in heterogeneous environments. In October 2020, we have successfully carried out the world’s first airborne BiSAR-GMTI experiment, and the experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of this method.

A Novel Moving Target Detection Method Based on RPCA for SAR Systems

Clutter background suppression and velocity estimation for moving targets are two critical problems in synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI). A robust principal component analysis (RPCA) method is used to separate the sparse matrix of moving targets from the low-rank matrix of static backgrounds by using amplitude information in the image domain. However, the nonsparsity of the moving target echoes limits the performance of the RPCA in SAR-GMTI, and the velocity of the moving target cannot be estimated since the phase information is destroyed by the soft-thresholding operator in the RPCA process. To solve these problems, a novel moving target detection method based on RPCA (NRPCA) for SAR systems is proposed in this article. An atomic norm-based optimization program is first constructed to transform the data sparsity requirement into a moving target sparsity requirement. Although this optimization program is NP-hard, it is transformed to semidefinite programming by relaxation. Furthermore, accurate velocity estimation is performed using dual function theory and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm while the selection of the sparsity order k is avoided. Simulations and analyses based on experimental data illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Clutter Suppression Method Based on NSS-RPCA in Heterogeneous Environments for SAR-GMTI

Clutter background suppression is a critical problem in synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI). In general, a great quantity of secondary data is not easily acquired in heterogeneous environments. To solve the problem of clutter suppression, a method based on nonlocal self-similarity-robust principal component analysis (NSS-RPCA) is proposed for airborne SAR systems. First, discrete clutter is separated from the echo data by RPCA after range pulse compression. Second, similar blocks of the residual-clutter background are extracted to overcome the training sample limitation using the NSS method in the 2-D time domain. Third, subcovariance matrices are structured by the similar blocks, and the subcovariance matrix is stacked into a tensor. Then, the subclutter covariance matrix can be obtained from the stacked subcovariance matrix tensor by RPCA, where the residual-clutter tensor is of low rank and the target tensor is sparse. Finally, the residual clutter can be suppressed by the subclutter covariance matrix. In this manner, the source of independent identically distributed (IID) samples will be increased significantly without aperture loss by the proposed method. Simulation and analysis based on the experimental data illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Robust Radial Velocity Estimation Method for FDA-SAR

In multi-channel synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI), most radial velocity estimation methods are based on the phase difference between channels. However, the image coregistration and channel phase errors will have a severe impact on the phase difference between channels. Moreover, it deteriorates the performance of the moving target radial velocity estimation. To solve this problem, a robust radial velocity estimation method is proposed using a frequency diverse array-SAR (FDA-SAR) in this letter. By introducing the step frequency, the interferometric phase among channels is a linear function of the Doppler frequency. The radial velocity of moving targets is embedded in the first-order term of the linear function. Meanwhile, the first-order term does not include channel phase error terms. Therefore, the accurate velocity of moving targets is estimated by the first-order coefficient which is solved by the least-squares fitting method. Afterward, according to the analysis and derivation, the proposed method is robust on the condition of image coregistration error. At last, simulations and data analysis illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Image-Based Target Detection and Radial Velocity Estimation Methods for Multichannel SAR-GMTI

In order to enhance the performance of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar–ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI) systems, multichannel systems with large and preferably nonuniform baselines are required. In this paper, SAR-GMTI algorithms for multichannel SAR systems, which we call multichannel displaced phase center antenna (DPCA), multichannel along track interferometry (ATI), and multichannel DPCA-ATI, are presented. Multichannel DPCA is a deterministic algorithm for clutter and azimuth ambiguity suppression. It successfully suppresses not only uniform azimuth ambiguities but also nonuniform isolated ones, since it does not require uniform clutter covariance assumption as adaptive algorithms do. Multichannel ATI and multichannel DPCA-ATI are the algorithms for target radial velocity estimation. Both of them reduce the target radial velocity ambiguities, which arise with the long baseline systems, by exploiting the multiple receive channel signals. And multichannel DPCA-ATI further achieves robust performance to clutter influence by suppressing the clutter and the azimuth ambiguity in advance. The performances of the proposed algorithms are shown through airborne Ku-band three-channel SAR experiments. It is shown that the multichannel DPCA suppresses strong azimuth ambiguity up to more than 20 dB, and the accuracy of the radial velocity estimation of the multichannel DPCA-ATI is on the order of 0.1 m/s. Furthermore, statistical performance analysis is presented to discuss the potential performance on the spaceborne system.

A New SAR–GMTI High-Accuracy Focusing and Relocation Method Using Instantaneous Interferometry

In this paper, for a multichannel synthetic aperture radar–ground moving target indication (SAR--GMTI) system, a new high-accuracy focusing and relocating method using instantaneous interferometry, i.e., carrying out interferometry operation in the azimuth time domain before focusing, is proposed. One of the key steps of this method is to perform instantaneous interferometry to get accurate equivalent cross-track velocity (ECV) estimation for cross-track motion compensation. After that, the signal from a moving target is concentrated in range, and along-track motion compensation becomes convenient. Motion compensation transforms a moving target into a stationary one; thus, the conventional SAR imaging algorithm can be applied to focus the moving target. Finally, a strategy for accurately relocating a moving target is presented. The processing results of simulated and measured data illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Efficient Compressed Sensing Method for Moving-Target Imaging by Exploiting the Geometry Information of the Defocused Results

Compressed sensing (CS) has been increasingly used in the synthetic aperture radar ground moving-target indication system, particularly for imaging the moving targets, which satisfy the sparse precondition of the CS method. However, efficient moving-target imaging is a key challenge for current CS methods, since the redundant basis brings heavy computation load. In this letter, by exploiting the geometry information of the defocused results, we present an efficient fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) to estimate the Doppler rate and image the moving targets by only two times FRFT rather than time-consuming searching operation. Then, the concept is extended into an efficient CS (ECS) imaging method by two bases consisting of two discrete FRFT matrices rather than the redundant basis. Simulations and real-data process are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ECS method. The proposed ECS method can achieve accurate parameter estimation and imaging performance with low computational complexity.

Geometry-Information-Aided Efficient Motion Parameter Estimation for Moving-Target Imaging and Location

Efficient motion parameter estimation is a key challenge for moving-target imaging and localization in the synthetic aperture radar ground moving-target indication system. However, the existing methods suffer from ambiguities, complex realization, or heavy computation load of O(MN). To solve these problems, we propose an efficient Radon transform (RT) and an efficient fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) to estimate the radial velocity and azimuth velocity. By exploiting the geometry information, we model a geometry relationship between the motion parameters and two transform angles of RT or FRFT. The matched motion parameters can be estimated by the geometry relationship of the mismatched results, and the computation complexity is reduced from O(MN) to O(2N) effectively. Additionally, the symmetry property can be used for clutter canceling. Simulated and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed methods. Compared with conventional motion parameter estimation methods, the proposed methods are much more efficient in acquiring accurate estimation results.

Performance comparison and assessment of displaced phase center antenna and along-track interferometry techniques used in synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication

Displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) and along-track interferometry (ATI) are the two popular techniques used to determine synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication fields, and studies have shown that the combinations of these techniques can improve the target detection performance. However, a crucial problem is how to combine the two techniques, which requires a complete analysis and comparison of the individual techniques. Generally, it is well known that the performances of these techniques are closely related to clutter and noise. A detailed comparison of the detection performance of ATI and DPCA is presented, together with an assessment developed by theoretical analysis and simulations. The results show that the ATI is limited mainly by the clutter and noise, while DPCA is limited mainly by channel imbalance and noise. The ATI’s main drawback is its high false alarm rate, and DPCA is more sensitive to the channel imbalance. In most cases, DPCA is better than ATI, but for a high clutter-to-noise ratio, low signal-to-clutter power ratio, and channel imbalance, ATI has a better performance than DPCA. The real data experiments verify the theoretical findings. Meanwhile, the effects of target radial velocity, incidence angle, transmission bandwidth, and terrain type on the performance of the two detection approaches are also investigated.

Adaptive clutter suppression and resolving of velocity ambiguities for an experimental three-channel airborne synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication system

This study investigates practical processing methods aiming at detecting ground moving targets and estimating their motion parameters for an experimental three-channel airborne synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI) system. It focuses on two key points of GMTI processing: adaptive clutter suppression and resolving of velocity ambiguities. Different from the conventional clutter suppression based on SAR images or in range-Doppler domain of the entire-aperture pulses, the clutter cancellation is proposed to be performed in the Doppler domain of short-aperture pulses to avoid the superposition of clutter echoes from different ground patches in azimuth; meanwhile, the ground moving target signals are focused with the full aperture to maximise the signal-to-noise ratio. To resolve the velocity ambiguity, a joint strategy is proposed that combines the estimates of the along-track interferometric phases and the Doppler spectrum information of a ground moving target according to the Chinese remainder theorem. The implementations of the processing operations are verified with real data from the experimental three-channel airborne SAR-GMTI system.
