As is well known to most musicians, musical composition underwent a remarkable and revolutionary transformation during the years 1908-1922. This radical change was due almost entirely to the innovations of Arnold Schoenberg and his students, Anton Webern and Alban Berg. The term atonal, commonly used to describe the music of that time, is construed as exhibiting any of the structural characteristics of the music of traditional, triadic tonality. However inadequate the term may be, it does indicate that the structural determinants of this complex music are not well understood. The scorereading program described in this paper is part of a larger research project concerned with the development of a general structural
