The injury thus suffered by the liver may be transient or it may be permanent, resulting in cirrhosis. Thus Baldridge1reported that, of a series of 36 patients with definite portal cirrhosis, one-third had histories of treatment for syphilis. During the past 10 years the value of controlling the arsphenamine treatment of syphilis by functional tests of the liver has been repeatedly emphasized.
