An electrochemical sensor based on electrochemically activated carbon cloth and poly (o-aminothiophenol) cross-linked nanogold imprinted layer for the determination of tert-butylhydroquinone

In this study, an electrochemical sensor based on MoS2 with enhanced electrochemical signals from electrochemically activated carbon cloth (EACC) electrodes and cross-linked o-aminothiophenol functionalized AuNPs (o-ATP@AuNPs) was developed for the detection of the unsaturated vegetable oil antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). In this approach, carbon cloth is activated through the implementation of electrochemical methods, thereby effectively increasing its specific surface area. The resulting EACC, serving as an electrode substrate, enables the growth of additional nanomaterials and enhances conductivity. The incorporation of MoS2 effectively augments the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Subsequently, MIP/MoS2/EMCC is formed via electropolymerization, utilizing TBHQ as the template molecule and o-ATP@AuNPs as the functional monomer. The SS bond of o-ATP ensures a strong and stable connection between MoS2 and o-ATP@AuNPs, thereby facilitating the immobilization of MIP. In addition, the high conductivity possessed by o-ATP@AuNPs could effectively improve the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Under the optimal conditions, MIP/MoS2/EMCC could determine TBHQ in the range of 1 × 10−3 μM to 120 μM by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a detection line of 0.72 nM. The proposed MIP/MoS2/EMCC is expected to be applied in the future for the selective and sensitive detection of TBHQ in vegetable oils.

Formation of adducts during digestion triggered dietary protein for alleviating cytotoxicity of 2-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone

2-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TBBQ), a degradation product of lipid antioxidant Tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), is a new hazardous compound in foods. This study investigated whether co-ingestion of dietary protein and TBBQ can alleviate the toxicity of TBBQ. The results indicated that soy protein isolate, whey protein isolate, and rice protein significantly reduced the residual amount of TBBQ during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. This result was attributed to the excellent elimination capacity of the released amino acids for TBBQ through formation of adducts. Among 20 amino acids, histidine, lysine, glycine, and cysteine showed better elimination capacity for TBBQ; they can eliminate 92.1%, 89.4%, 86.1%, and almost 100%, respectively, in 5 min at pH 8.0. Further study indicated that amino acids with lower ionization constant exhibited greater TBBQ elimination capacity. In addition, incubation of the cells with 50 μM TBBQ for 12 h decreased the cell viability to 28.95 ± 3.25%; while amino acids intervention was involved in the alleviation of TBBQ cytotoxicity via decreasing ROS. Particularly, cysteine showed 100 times more TBBQ detoxifying capacity than other amino acids. This work could provide a theoretical basis for the potential application of amino acids for detoxifying TBBQ in the food industry.

Study of oleogel based on components <i>Helianthus annuus L.</i> and <i>Rosmarinus officinalis L.</i> as frying oil

The aim of this study was to study the oxidation resistance and functional properties of oleogels based on high oleic oil and wax from Helianthus annuus L. with the addition of a natural complex antioxidant — an extract from Rosmarinus officinalis L. and lecithin from Helianthus annuus L. — when used as a frying medium for French-fries. High oleic sunflower oil was structured into an oleogel with sunflower wax at a dosage of 5%. Studies were carried out to determine the possibility of replacing the synthetic antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone at a dosage of 200 mg/kg with a natural antioxidant based on rosemary extract and sunflower lecithin in an oleogel with a defoamer. It was determined that the introduction of sunflower wax increased the induction period of high-oleic sunflower oil by 1.6 times, and the additional introduction of defoamer and antioxidants increased this figure by 1.8–2 times. The rate of accumulation of oxidation products in oil, which is characterized by the level of total polar materials, decreased when wax and antioxidants were added. The degree of thermal oxidation most quickly reached the limit value in oil without additives; in oleogels, it significantly decreased. The introduction of sunflower wax into oil contributed to a noticeable decrease in the absorption of oil by potatoes: fried in oleogel, it absorbed 34–38% less oil than fried in oil without additives. The addition of 0.07% rosemary extract with sunflower lecithin to the oleogel increased the operating time of frying oil by at least 2 times, approximately the same as that of the oleogel with tert-butylhydroquinone. This makes it possible to replace the synthetic antioxidant in deepfrying oleogel with natural rosemary extract with sunflower lecithin. The developed oleogel is a frying oil that has a longer service life and allows you to get fried products with a lower amount of fat.

Antioxidant addition improves cholesterol and astaxanthin stability in dry salted shrimp.

Traditional production of dry salted shrimp enhances cholesterol oxidation and astaxanthin degradation in the product. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of the antioxidants butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) to cooked shrimp on the formation of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) and astaxanthin degradation during solar drying of shrimp. The added antioxidants significantly inhibited COPs formation after the product was boiled in brine. Smaller amounts of COPs were formed in antioxidant-treated shrimps (~-23%) as compared to untreated samples. The antioxidants continued to significantly inhibit COPs formation (~-39%) during sun drying. Similarly, TBHQ and BHT reduced by 51.3% and 37.2%, respectively, the degradation rate of astaxanthin, favoring a higher retention of this carotenoid in the final product. The use of the antioxidants BHT and TBHQ in the preparation of dry salted shrimp significantly inhibited the formation of COPs after cooking raw shrimp and during direct solar drying. They also protected astaxanthin contained in the cooked shrimp from photodegradation. These results are technologically relevant because it is possible to prepare a product with a higher content of astaxanthin and lower the presence of hazardous COPs. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

A sensitive and economical electrochemical platform for detection of food additive tert-butylhydroquinone based on porous Co3O4 nanorods embellished chemically oxidized carbon black

Artificial food preservatives are widely utilized across the globe to prolong shelf life of food. In this paper, a highly sensitive and cost-effective electrochemical sensor for the nanomolar detection of synthetic antioxidant tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) commonly used as a food preservative is reported. A hybrid nanocomposite was sonochemically prepared by embedding surface functionalized carbon black (FCB) on spinel Co3O4 nanorods. We used oxalic acid mediated co-precipitation approach in the synthesis of highly porous Co3O4 nanorods and CB was chemically oxidized using acid-treatment. Significant characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, mapping, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and EIS were utilized for analyzing morphological and structural properties of materials. The prepared hybrid nanocomposite modified electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. A high sensitivity of 7.94 μA μM−1 cm−2, ultra-low detection limit of 1 nM, and quantification limit of 5 nM was achieved in TBHQ detection based on the modified electrode. Furthermore, the practicality of the developed electrochemical sensor in TBHQ detection is confirmed by conducting real sample analysis experiment in beef tallow, peanut oil, and lake water resulting in adequate recovery values.

Biomimetic metalloporphyrin oxidase modified carbon nanotubes for highly sensitive and stable quantification of anti-oxidants tert-butylhydroquinone in plant oil

This study constructed a novel biomimetic enzyme electrochemical biosensor based on tetraphenyl metalloporphyrins functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The effect of central metal ions on the catalytic activity of tetraphenyl metalloporphyrin biomimetic enzyme was investigated. It was found that the change of central metal ions had a significant effect on the catalytic performance of metalloporphyrin and Zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) had the most excellent catalytic property. The electrochemical behaviors of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) on ZnTPP/MWCNTs modified electrode were investigated. It was found that the redox peak current was increased significantly, which was attributed to the redox peak current to the electrocatalytic activity of ZnTPP and the synergistic effect between ZnTPP and MWCNTs. A strong linear relationship was shown in the concentration range of 0.01 to 1000 μM. This electrochemical sensor also had excellent repeatability, storage, and interference resistance. This work provided a simple and sensitive method for the determination of TBHQ.

Deep eutectic solvents as switchable solvents for highly efficient liquid–liquid microextraction of phenolic antioxidant: Easily tracking the original TBHQ in edible oils

Synthetic antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is easily oxidized to tert-butylquinone (TQ) during the storage of edible oils, resulting in an obvious decrease in the content of TBHQ in edible oils. Therefore, it is quite desirable to develop a simple analytical method for accurately tracking the original content of TBHQ in edible oils. In this work, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been successfully used in room temperature vortex-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction (VALLME) of TBHQ from edible oils. The DES composed of ethylene glycol and choline chloride (ChCl) could selectively extract TBHQ from edible oils containing both TBHQ and TQ. The DES composed of sesamol and ChCl (molar ratio of 3:1) could efficiently reduce TQ to TBHQ and extract TBHQ from edible oils. The whole VALLME process only required 5 min at room temperature. This switchable DESs-based VALLME with common RP-HPLC analysis showed high efficiency and good performance with linearity (R2 = 0.9999) in 5–500 mg/kg range, detection limit of 0.02 mg/kg, recoveries of 96.1–106.0% and intra-/inter-day precision below 2.0%. This analytical method is suitable for detecting the current content of TBHQ and tracking the original content of TBHQ during the storage of edible oils at room temperature, respectively.

The optimization proposal of adding antioxidant TBHQ into biodiesel

Different antioxidant effects of adding tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) to biodiesel in different processes of biodiesel production were investigated by determining oxidation stability during the biodiesel production process. The induction time of biodiesel prepared from waste animal and vegetable oils containing 0.10 wt% TBHQ was 10.9 h at 110 °C, the induction time increased with the increase of TBHQ concentration. While the antioxidant effect of adding the same concentration of antioxidant TBHQ was weakened with the extension of storage time (before TBHQ was added), the oxidation stability of the biodiesel decreased by 53.6% after 18 hours' placement. Similarly, when TBHQ was added in the production process, the induction time also extended with the increase of TBHQ concentration. With 0.06 wt% TBHQ added in the distillation process, the oxidation induction time of biodiesel obtained was 9.7 h, with 0.06 wt% TBHQ added in the reaction process, the oxidation induction time of biodiesel obtained was 14.27 h. As expected, for the same concentration, TBHQ displayed the highest effectiveness when added in the reaction process and showed better efficacy when used in the distillation process compared to adding in store stage.

Vegetable tannins-based additive as antioxidant for biodiesel

The development of more sustainable antioxidants alternatives for the improvement of biodiesel oxidation stability is gaining importance. Vegetable tannins are known for their antioxidant properties. In this work, acacia (Acacia mearnsii), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii) tannins extracts were used in mixture with triethanolamine as antioxidants for soybean biodiesel. Tannins were characterized by Folin-Ciocalteau method for the determination of total phenolic content (TPC) and against DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydracyl) radical for scavenging capacity. When applied to the biodiesel at a concentration of 350 mg L−1 in mixture with 1.59 %wt of triethanolamine, tannins were highly effective in enhancing oxidative stability with superior performance than synthetic antioxidant tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). These findings indicate that vegetal tannins can be used as a renewable alternative to enhance biodiesel oxidation stability.

Identification of In Vitro Metabolites of Synthetic Phenolic Antioxidants BHT, BHA, and TBHQ by LC-HRMS/MS.

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and its analogs, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and tert-butyl-hydroquinone (TBHQ), are widely used synthetic preservatives to inhibit lipid oxidation in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Despite their widespread use, little is known about their human exposure and related biotransformation products. The metabolism of these compounds was investigated using in vitro incubations with human and rat liver fractions. Liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry was employed to detect and characterize stable and reactive species formed via oxidative metabolism, as well as phase II conjugates. Several oxidative metabolites have been detected, as well as glutathione, glucuronide, and sulfate conjugates, many of which were not previously reported. A combination of accurate mass measurements, MS/MS fragmentation behavior, and isotope-labeling studies were used to elucidate metabolite structures.

N-Way NIR Data Treatment through PARAFAC in the Evaluation of Protective Effect of Antioxidants in Soybean Oil.

The use of chemometric tools is progressing to scientific areas where analytical chemistry is present, such as food science. In analytical food evaluation, oils represent an important field, allowing the exploration of the antioxidant effects of herbs and seeds. However, traditional methodologies have some drawbacks which must be overcome, such as being time-consuming, requiring sample preparation, the use of solvents/reagents, and the generation of toxic waste. The objective of this study is to evaluate the protective effect provided by plant-based substances (directly, or as extracts), including pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, dehydrated goji berry, and Provençal herbs, against the oxidation of antioxidant-free soybean oil. Synthetic antioxidants tert-butylhydroquinone and butylated hydroxytoluene were also considered. The evaluation was made through thermal degradation of soybean oil at different temperatures, and near-infrared spectroscopy was employed in an n-way mode, coupled with Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) to extract nontrivial information. The results for PARAFAC indicated that factor 1 shows oxidation product information, while factor 2 presents results regarding the antioxidant effect. The plant-based extract was more effective in improving the frying stability of soybean oil. It was also possible to observe that while the oxidation product concentration increased, the antioxidant concentration decreased as the temperature increased. The proposed method is shown to be a simple and fast way to obtain information on the protective effects of antioxidant additives in edible oils, and has an encouraging potential for use in other applications.

Tomato waste extract (Lycopersicon esculentum) as a natural antioxidant in soybean oil under heating

The tomato processing industry generates a large amount of waste, usually composed of peels and seeds. It is known that the tomato is rich in bioactive compounds, mainly carotenoids (lycopene and ?-carotene), however, studies on the functionality of its residues are scarce. Thus, these residues are discarded without the knowledge of possible antioxidant potential. The objective of this work was to determine the stability of bioactive in soybean oil added to the extract of agroindustrial tomato waste under heating. The extract obtained with ethyl alcohol at the ratio of 1: 5 (w/v) was initially analyzed for total phenolic compounds, lycopene, ?-carotene, and antioxidant activity using the DPPH and ?- carotene / linoleic acid. Subsequently, the extract and the synthetic antioxidants, butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) were applied in soybean oil, and the treatments subjected to heating in Rancimat (180oC/5 h). The thermoxidated samples were analyzed for the composition of tocopherols by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), phytosterols, and fatty acid profile by gas chromatography (GC). The extract of agro-industrial tomato residues showed moderate results concerning its antioxidant activity, 68% by the DPPH method, and 26.2% of auto-oxidation of the ?-carotene / linoleic acid system. The synthetic antioxidant TBHQ had a greater protective effect on soybean oil when compared to the control, providing greater retention of phytosterols (85%) and tocopherols (93%). Tomato extract can be used as a natural antioxidant in industrialized oils, but with less effectiveness than the antioxidant TBHQ.

Potential of Mafura seed oil as a feedstock for biodiesel production

Environmental concerns caused by the constant use of fossil fuels can be solved by the use of biofuels. This work shows the application of the oil of Trichilia emetica Vahl (Mafura) seeds originating from Mozambique as a feedstock for biodiesel production. The high oil acidity required a two-step reaction involving esterification using sulphuric acid (H2SO4) as catalyst followed by for the conversion of Mafura oil to fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). The acid value was reduced from 27.58 to 0.36 (mg KOH g −1). Other physicochemical properties (moisture content, density, free glycerol) of FAME attended the established limits of EN14214 and Brazilian norms. The low induction-period (IP) was surpassed after the addition of 500 ppm of the synthetic antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) resulting in 10.8 h. The conversion of the feedstock (99.1%wt) was confirmed by gas chromatograph with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The fatty-acid methyl ester contents of the Mafura biodiesel presented palmitic acid (39.32%wt), linoleic acid (31.09%wt), oleic acid (25.77%wt), stearic acid (2.29%wt), meristic acid (0.78%wt), linolenic acid (0.61%wt) and lauric acid (0.14%wt). These results show that the biodiesel produced from Mafura oil met most of the quality standards required by American, Brazilian and European regulatory agencies.

Characterizing the binding of tert-butylhydroquinone and its oxidation product tert-butylquinone with calf thymus DNA in vitro

The binding characteristics of food antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and its oxidation product tert-butylquinone (TBQ) with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) in vitro were investigated using multispectroscopy, chemometrics, viscosity measurements, gel electrophoresis assays and molecular docking. Analysis of fluorescence spectra found that TBHQ and TBQ bound with ctDNA to form 1:1 complexes with the binding constant in the order of 104 L mol−1. The concentration profiles and the pure spectra for the components (TBHQ, TBQ, ctDNA and TBHQ– or TBQ–ctDNA complex) were obtained through analyzing the expanded ultraviolet-visible absorption data matrix by multivariate curve resolution–alternating least squares algorithm, which successfully monitored the binding process of TBHQ/TBQ with ctDNA. Fluorescence displacement, viscosity and molecular docking experiments showed that TBHQ bound to ctDNA through intercalation binding, while TBQ bound to the minor groove of ctDNA. The binding of TBHQ to ctDNA induced the conversion of DNA conformation from B-form to A-form, while TBQ caused a minor perturbation on the DNA conformation. Gel electrophoresis results indicated that the combination of TBHQ and Cu(II) could induce DNA damage. This study may contribute to understanding the binding mechanisms of TBHQ and TBQ with ctDNA and further evaluate the potential toxicological effects of TBHQ as a food additive.

Study of pure and combined antioxidants for replacing TBHQ in soybean oil packed in pet bottles.

Oils are subject to several reactions that lead to physical-chemical, sensory and nutritional deterioration. This deterioration process is called rancidity or lipid oxidation, a spontaneous and irreversible phenomenon that can be delayed by the addition of antioxidants. Usually, vegetable oil producers choose to add antioxidants to the upper limit permitted by applicable law as it is not entirely clear the ideal dosages of pure or combined antioxidants designated for this purpose. In order to determine the optimum dosage of antioxidants that minimizes the impact of lipid oxidation of soybean oil bottled in PET (ethylene terephthalate) and replace the traditional antioxidant tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), an accelerated oven shelf-life test was performed. The antioxidants ascorbyl palmitate (AP), mix of tocopherols and rosemary extract (RE) were evaluated, pure and in combination, at different dosages. Most of the evaluated antioxidants delayed lipid oxidation of soybean oil, but a mixture containing AP and RE presented results of TOTOX statistically lower (higher oxidative stability) than that with TBHQ. One the other hand, regarding OSI at 120°C, the result obtained by that mixture was statistically lower (less oxidative stability) than that obtained with TBHQ, in both evaluated dosages.

Toxicity of Aqueous L-Selenomethionine and Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide Exposure to Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Embryos Following Tert-Butyl Hydroquinone Treatment.

Aqueous L-selenomethionine (SeMet) embryo exposures represent a rapid and simplified method for investigating the embryotoxic effects of SeMet. Using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism, the objective of the present study was to characterize the effects of waterborne exposure to both SeMet and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBOOH) to early life stages of zebrafish pre-treated with the antioxidant tert-butyl hydroquinone (tBHQ) in an attempt to investigate the mechanism of Se toxicity as it relates to oxidative stress. During the initial concentration range finding experiment, recently fertilized embryos were exposed for five days to 5, 25, 125, and 625 µg Se/L (as SeMet). These exposures informed the second experiment in which embryos were exposed to two concentrations of SeMet (25 and 125 µg Se/L) and 75 mg/L tBOOH either with (tBOOH-t, 25-t, 125-t) or without (tBOOH, 25, 125) a 4 h 100 µg/L tBHQ pre-treatment. Survival, hatchability, time to hatch, the frequency and severity of deformities (total and type), and changes in the expression of seven antioxidant-associated genes were determined. Exposures to SeMet and tBOOH reduced hatchability, increased time to hatch, decreased survival, increased the incidence and severity of deformities, and increased glutathione-disulfide reductase (gsr) expression in the pre-treated tBOOH treatment group.

Recombinant production of a bioactive peptide from spotless smooth-hound (Mustelus griseus) muscle and characterization of its antioxidant activity.

Bioactive peptides are short amino acid sequences with desirable health effects which are derived from animals, plants, and marine sources. In this study, recombinant production of a bioactive peptide (GIISHR) from spotless smooth-hound (Mustelus griseus) muscle and its antioxidant properties is discussed. A gene composed of 12 tandem copies of the peptide sequence was cloned in pET-28a and expressed as a His-tagged polypeptide in Escherichia coli. The recombinant polypeptide was then purified by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography, cleaved by Trypsin and purified by ultrafiltration. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzotiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity assays, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and β-carotene bleaching test were used to characterize the antioxidant activity of the GIISHR. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed 60% purity for released bioactive peptide. Production yield was estimated as 60-80mg GIISHR active peptide per 1L bacterial culture. Antioxidant activity assays indicated that the antioxidant activity was increased with increase in peptide concentration. Though the DPPH radical scavenging activity, FRAP and β-carotene bleaching power of the peptide were lower than those of the synthetic antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), the ABTS and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of the peptide (at a concentration of 20mg/mL) were similar to those of TBHQ (at a concentration of 0.1mg/mL). The findings of the present study may be helpful in development of a process for production of the bioactive antioxidant peptides and its application in food industry.

Voltammetric determination of copper and tert-butylhydroquinone in biodiesel: A rapid quality control protocol

Trace amounts of copper decrease significantly the oxidative stability of biodiesel while antioxidants, mostly tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), are commonly introduced to the biofuel to guarantee induction period values within regulatory limits. Hence, a simple method to monitor the most used antioxidant and the most deleterious contaminant in biodiesel can give a fast response on its quality. In this context, this work presents a simple, efficient, low cost and sensitive method for the simultaneous and direct determination of copper and the antioxidant TBHQ in biodiesel. The biodiesel samples were diluted in 90% (v/v) ethanol and 10% (v/v) water containing 0.1 mol L−1 HCl (final concentration) as the supporting electrolyte generating a homogeneous mixture in which Cu(II) and TBHQ were directly detected using the square wave voltammetry (SWV) on a gold working electrode. The presence of biodiesel in the selected electrolyte facilitated the separation of analyte peaks facilitating the treatment of data and quantification. The linear responses for the simultaneous determination were in the range between 5 and 100 μg L−1 and 4.2–81.5 mg L−1 for copper and TBHQ (R > 0.997), respectively. High precision (RSD = 4.0% and 3.9%, n = 20) and limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.31 μg L−1 and 1.0 mg L−1 (0.030 μg g−1 and 0.102 mg g−1 in biodiesel) for Cu(II) and TBHQ, respectively, were obtained. Recovery values between 97% and 104% for both copper and TBHQ were obtained.

Corrosive character of Moringa oleifera Lam biodiesel exposed to carbon steel under simulated storage conditions

The corrosive character of Moringa oleifera Lam biodiesel was evaluated through static immersion tests with different carbon steels (CS1015 and CS4140) in absence and presence of the antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), at room temperature in the absence of light for 84 days. Biodiesel parameters, including oxidation stability (induction period, IP), total acid number (TAN) and iron concentration released from carbon steel, were monitored. The produced biodiesel presented an IP value of 4.9 h, which was increased to 6.2 h after the addition of 500 mg kg−1 TBHQ. After 84 days of immersion, IP values decreased in the first 21 days due to the contact with the metallic coupon, while TBHQ retarded this process. TAN value increased in 20% but the values were below the recommended limits (<0.5 mg g−1 KOH according to EN14214). Iron was detected in the biodiesels exposed to CS1015 (8 μg g−1), while in the presence of TBHQ this value decreased to 5 μg g−1, indicating corrosion inhibition by TBHQ. Iron was not detected in the biodiesels exposed to CS4140, which indicated that this material was more compatible with biodiesel. Notably, the oxidation stability of Moringa biodiesel was not affected (IP > 3 h) by the high Fe content.
