Antibacterial Activity of Plants in Cirsium: A Comprehensive Review.

As ethnic medicine, the whole grass of plants in Cirsium was used as antimicrobial. This review focuses on the antimicrobial activity of plants in Cirsium, including antimicrobial components, against different types of microbes and bacteriostatic mechanism. The results showed that the main antimicrobial activity components in Cirsium plants were flavonoids, triterpenoids and phenolic acids, and the antimicrobial ability varied according to the species and the content of chemicals. Among them, phenolic acids showed a strong antibacterial ability against Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecium. The antibacterial mechanisms include: (1) damaging the cell membrane, cell walls, mitochondria and nucleus of bacteria; (2) inhibiting the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids; (3) suppressing the synthesis of enzymes for tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways and glycolysis, and then killing the bacteria via inhibition of energy production. Totally, most research results on antimicrobial activity of Cirsium plants are reported based on in vitro assays. The evidence from clinical data and comprehensive evaluation are needed.

Antimicrobial activity of plant from educational forest in Universitas Borneo Tarakan

Universitas Borneo Tarakan Educational Forest has a mega biodiversity. There is the potential of plants as raw materials for new medicines or as substitutes for food reserves domesticated. This study aims to identify and explore plant species by screening for antibacterial activity of 25 selected plant species found in the Educational Forest of the Universitas Borneo Tarakan. In this investigation, the agar well method was implemented with a concentration of 5 mg/ml, to determine the antimicrobial activity against five distinct microorganisms. These microorganisms included Streptococcus sobrinus, S. mutans, Candida albicans, Propionibacterium acne, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi. This study resulted in the finding that there were five plants capable of inhibiting the growth of S. sobrinus bacteria, namely, Cytandra sp., Cratoxylum sumatranum, Garcinia sp., Fissistigma sp., and Cyclosorus interruptus, with respective inhibitions of 62%, 54.2%, 49%, 46%, and 45%. Inhibition also occurred in P. acne, namely in Cratoxylum sumatranum, with an inhibition of 46.5%. Cytandra sp. has the strongest inhibition because it can inhibit three bacteria, namely S. aureus, S. sobrinus, and S. thypi, at 71%, 62%, and 50%, respectively. This research needs to be carried out further to identify compounds that play a role in the inhibition mechanism to obtain plant species that play a direct role in disease and can be domesticated.

Potential antifertility and antimicrobial activities of plants used in traditional medicines: A review

Population explosion is a main cause of poverty, health problems, pollution and illiteracy across the world especially in developing countries like India. Nature always has been a source of remedies, many plants and their products have been used in modern pharmacopeia to control and manage different kinds of diseases. A number of traditional medicinal plants extracts have been explored to evaluate effects on fertility in male and female animals and some of them have promising antifertility effects, since synthetic, hormonal and other contraceptives available for fertility control have some drawbacks and side effects in users. Survey of literature enumerates those medicinal plants which show antifertility and antimicrobial properties. In present review we aim to provide information about different medicinal plants with their botanical names, common names and name of their family those have been reported with their antifertility and antimicrobial activities.

Evaluation of In-Vitro Antioxidant Potential and Antimicrobial Activity of Nephrolepis biserrata (sw.) Schott. Leaf Extracts

Objective: This study aims to determine the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Nephrolepis biserrata (Sw.) Schott leaf extracts against different microbial strains, including 4 gram-positive bacteria, 4 gram-negative bacteria, 3 yeast, and 4 mould. Methods: The agar well diffusion method examined the antimicrobial activity of Nephrolepis biserrata leaf extracts against test micro-organisms. Additionally, TPC (total phenolic content), TFC (total flavonoid content), and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical assay of extracts were determined. Results: Preliminary phytochemical screening of all three extracts revealed the presence of tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, saponin glycosides, and flavonoids. Results obtained were compared with the antibiotics Amphotericin B, Fluconazole, and Gentamicin used as standards. The mean zones of inhibition of methanol extract varied from 7 to 25 mm. However, with petroleum ether extract, the range varied from 9 to 12 mm and with acetone extract, the range was from 8 to 13 mm at two different concentrations of 250 and 500μg/disc. All extracts possessed significant antimicrobial activity against bacterial strains including Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, Pseudomonas aeuginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus Vulgaris, and Klebsiella pneumonia compared to fungal microbes such as Cryptococcus luteolus, Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, Aspergillus candidus, A. niger, and Mucor hiemalis wehmer, respectively. However, amongst all the three extracts, methanol leaf extract showed maximum antimicrobial activity. Conclusion: From the present study, it has been summarized that the antimicrobial activity of plants might be due to the presence of flavonoids and tannin components. In conclusion, still advanced research is required to isolate the active principles from plant extracts, showing antimicrobial activity that may lead to the development of a phytomedicine.

Identification of antinutritional, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of plants that cause livestock poisoning in Bojonegoro Regency, Indonesia.

The utilization of cassava leaves and peels, ceara rubber leaves, sweet potato leaves, Chinese Albizia leaves, and lophatheri leaves from Bojonegoro Regency has led to the poisoning of livestock due to antinutritional factors. Nevertheless, the plants are known to have bioactive components and potential antioxidant and antibacterial activity if appropriately processed. This study aimed to determine the antinutritional compounds as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial potential of these plants responsible for livestock poisoning in the Bojonegoro Regency. Extraction was performed by the maceration method using 70% (v/v) ethanol solvent. The samples were analyzed qualitatively to determine the presence of tannins, alkaloids, oxalates, cardiac glycosides, and cyanogenic glycosides. The antioxidant activity was determined using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl method, while the antimicrobial activity was assessed by different testing concentrations (125, 250, and 500 mg/mL) against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. The ethanolic extract of the plants was found to contain antinutritional tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, and cyanogenic glycosides suspected of causing livestock poisoning. Despite the presence of these antinutrients, all extracts also had antioxidant and antibacterial potential. Cassava peels and sweet potato leaves had the highest antioxidant activity, whereas Chinese Albizia leaves had the most potent antibacterial activity. Cassava leaves and peels, ceara rubber leaves, sweet potato leaves, Chinese Albizia leaves, and lophatheri leaves obtained from Bojonegoro Regency and used as agricultural waste contain antinutritional factors but also possess potentially effective antioxidant and antimicrobial components.

Screening of Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Phytochemicals Composition of Various Plant Parts of Cichorium Intybus

The present study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential as well as the phytochemical composition of root, seed and leaves of Cichoriumintybus. The antioxidant activity was analyzed by detecting the 2, 2-Diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl DPPH radical scavenging potent of the constituents found in various plant parts of Cichorium intybus,whereas for analyzing in-vitro antimicrobial activity, agar well diffusion method has been opted. The antimicrobial activity of plant was tested against both pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic species of bacteria by analyzing the corresponding inhibition zone exhibited by various extracts of plant parts against the bacterial growth. Apart from this, the present study also involves the quantitative phytochemical evaluation of total ascorbic acid in root, seed and leaves of Cichoriumintybus. The antioxidant potential of the plant was found to be comparatively lower in seed and leaves of plant than in root in accordance to the determined IC50 value . From the antimicrobial activity analysis, it was concluded that majority of times the non-polar extracts of all plant parts were found to be more effective in inhibiting growth of bacteria. Most significant activity has been exhibited against gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ascorbic acid content in plant was found in the range of 2.253±0.867 to 12.594±2.05µg/ml. From the results of the conducted research, the importance of plant as an antimicrobial and anti-oxidative agent has been established. So, the plant can further be introduced as a potential drug for herbal medicine in the treatment of human disorders.

Natural Polyphenols for the Preservation of Meat and Dairy Products.

Food spoilage makes foods undesirable and unacceptable for human use. The preservation of food is essential for human survival, and different techniques were initially used to limit the growth of spoiling microbes, e.g., drying, heating, salting, or fermentation. Water activity, temperature, redox potential, preservatives, and competitive microorganisms are the most important approaches used in the preservation of food products. Preservative agents are generally classified into antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-browning agents. On the other hand, artificial preservatives (sorbate, sulfite, or nitrite) may cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, asthma, neurological damage, hyperactivity, and cancer. Thus, consumers prefer natural food preservatives to synthetic ones, as they are considered safer. Polyphenols have potential uses as biopreservatives in the food industry, because their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities can increase the storage life of food products. The antioxidant capacity of polyphenols is mainly due to the inhibition of free radical formation. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of plants and herbs is mainly attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds. Thus, incorporation of botanical extracts rich in polyphenols in perishable foods can be considered since no pure polyphenolic compounds are authorized as food preservatives. However, individual polyphenols can be screened in this regard. In conclusion, this review highlights the use of phenolic compounds or botanical extracts rich in polyphenols as preservative agents with special reference to meat and dairy products.

Evaluation of Susceptibility and Resistance of Human Infectious Bacteria and Identification of Bioactive Compounds in Pistacia atlantica, Cassia absus, and Quercus persica

Background: The antimicrobial activity of plants has long been considered an effective mechanism for controlling pathogenic microorganisms.
 Objectives: This study aimed to identify phytochemical compounds of the seed extracts from ethnomedicinal plants of Pistacia atlantica, Cassia absus, and Quercus persica with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and investigation of their antibacterial and antioxidant activities.
 Methods: The seeds were collected from Lorestan Province, Iran. Their antibacterial and antiradical activities were analyzed by disk-diffusion and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assays, respectively. Ethanol (96%), methanol (80%), and distilled water extracts were obtained by the maceration method. The methanol extract was used for the analysis of chemical compositions.
 Results: About 40, 31, and 8 compounds were identified by GC-MS in the seeds of C. absus, P. atlantica, and Q. persica, respectively. Results indicated that 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (36.043%) and tetradecanoic acid (4.92%) were dominated in the seed extracts of C. absus. However, germacyclopetene (38.119%) and 1,2,3-benzenetriol (8.115%) were dominated in the seed extracts of P. atlantica. Furthermore, 5H-tetrazole-5-thione, 1,4-dihydro-1,4-dimethy (38.505%), and tetradecanoic acid (30.546%) were dominated in the seed extracts of Q. persica. The highest inhibitory activity against Micrococcus luteus was observed on the methanol extract of C. absus with ascorbic acid. A significant difference was observed between the Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) values of methanol extract of C. absus with ascorbic acid.
 Conclusion: Because of the presence of antimicrobial compounds in the tested ethnomedicinal plants, they can be used to synthesize new antimicrobial drugs in medicinal and pharmaceutical sciences.

Resistance mechanisms of Cryptococcus spp. and plant compounds as tools to combat them

Cryptococcus is a genus of dimorphic basidiomycete fungi found in the form of yeasts and filaments. Cryptococcosis has as main etiological agents the species Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. This disease is considered a public health problem and has becoming more alarming because of the limitations of antimicrobials available to its treatment, in addition to an increase in reports of fungal resistance. In this sense, the present review sought to survey information on the resistance mechanisms of Cryptococcus spp. against the main drugs used in cryptococcosis therapy as well as on the antimicrobial activities of plants against these fungi. Studies have reported that several mechanisms may be involved in fungal resistance to drugs including drug inactivation by enzymes, expression of efflux pumps and others drug transporters, as well as changes in the drug target and/or implementation of alternative metabolic pathways. As an alternative to conventional antimicrobials, substances and molecules extracted from plants have demonstrated potential for controlling these pathogens. These phytochemicals can trigger the inhibition and/or death of Cryptococcus through morphological changes on fungi cells, inhibition of ergosterol synthesis, cell leakage, capsular decrease, interference in cell division, reduction of activity of several enzymes such as laccase and urease, inhibition of biofilm formation, among others. In this sense, plants are an important source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity that can be studied in the search for new drugs that are increasingly effective, specific and less toxic in the control of cryptococcosis.

Antimicrobial And Antioxidant Activities Of Different Spice Extracts

Up to day, very little work has been done on the antimicrobial activity of spices extracts against food pathogens. Additionally, there is very little information about the antioxidant activities of spices. The aim of this work was to investigate the antimicrobial effects of spices extracts against food pathogens, and its non-enzymatic antioxidant potentials. The plants have been provided from C2 region of Mugla and local herbalists. Antimicrobial activities of plants were evaluated using disc diffusion method. The extracts showed maximum inhibition zone against various microorganisms, and the zone was 8 mm. Candida albicans and Listeria monocytogenes showed the lowest sensitivity to different extracts (3250 µg/ml). In addition, the extracts were tested against the DPPH [2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl] free-radical for antioxidant activity. A lot of extracts were displayed a high antioxidant activity. The highest antioxidant activity was determined on Nigella sativa (84%). In this study determined that the spices extracts have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Chemical profiles and antimicrobial activities of plants utilized in Brazilian traditional medicine

Medicinal plants are used for primary health care in many countries. In Brazil, there are hundreds of street markets selling a wide variety of herbs for medicinal purposes without quality control or scientific evidence; instead, their purported efficacy is based exclusively on empirical ethnobotanical knowledge. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of five medicinal plants widely utilized in Brazil to treat infections, as well as determined their chemical profiles. The results revealed that the five plants investigated (Anacardium occidentale L., Handroanthus impetiginosus Mart., Bumelia sartorum Sw., Zornia brasiliensis Vogel and Cnidosculus urens Pohl) demonstrated moderate to strong antimicrobial activity against most fungi and bacteria tested, principally for infections caused by gram-negative bacteria. The extracts of four plants exhibited MIC of 19.5 µg mL-1 against the bacterium Escherichia coli. The results also confirmed that these five traditional medicinal plants are efficient and inexpensive alternative sources of substances to treat infections. The samples of the commercially marketed plants did not have consistent chemical compositions in at least one type of HPLC, GC/MS, UV or 1H NMR analysis.

In this study, the effect of emulsifier and preparation technique on physicochemical properties and antioxidant/antimicrobial activity of plant oil (lemongrass and oregano, 1:1)/citrus extracts incorporated in oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion in comparison to coarse emulsion, was investigated. The optimization of O/W microemulsion was performed by two surfactants with different hydrophilic–lipophilic balance values and two techniques of preparation such as sonication and microfluidization. The stability of microemulsions during storage time regarding to the droplet size, ζ-potential, viscosity, total polyphenolics content, total flavonoids content, antioxidant, antiradical and antimicrobial activity were assessed. Micro-emulsification increased the bioactivity of plant oil/citrus extracts by increasing the surface area of droplets induced by size decrement. Microfluidized and sonicated emulsions showed the same relatively stable profile during storage time. Micro-emulsification improves the functionality of plant oil/citrus extracts, such as antioxidant and antiradical activity. An increment about 16–32 times in antimicrobial activity of plant oil/citrus extracts was also attained. Furthermore, the morphology of microemulsions observed by transmission electron microscopy, confirmed a mono-dispersed nano-sized emulsion.

Antioxidant activity, antimicrobial and effects in the immune system of plants and fruits extracts

ABSTRACTNowadays, medicinal plants, and fruits and vegetables with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity are increasingly studied. In this review, the impact of the medicinal plant extracts on the immune system was discussed. The first part described the phenomenon of oxidative stress, followed by the mechanisms involved in the antioxidant activity and finally discussed on the evaluation of the antioxidant activity of plants and fruits. The second part revised the works that discuss about the antimicrobial activity of plants and fruits extracts, emphasizing in the factors that influence the evaluation of such characteristic. Finally, in the third part, studies on the effect of the plant extracts over the immune response were discussed, describing the results of the enhancer effects, as well as those of the suppressing ones. This work allowed us to discern the necessity of a wider research on the chemical composition of the natural extracts, in order to establish a correlation with the effects observed in health.

Antimicrobial activity of plants used as medicinals on an indigenous reserve in Rio das Cobras, Paraná, Brazil

Ethnopharmacological relevanceA considerable percentage of global biodiversity is located in Brazil, a country that also has rich cultural and ethnic diversity. In the community of Rio das Cobras, Paraná, plants are still widely used in the health care not only by indigenous people but also by the non-indigenous population that inhabits the region. The investigation of the efficacy and safety of these plants in the treatment of infectious diseases provides insights for future studies of these species allowing the appropriated use by the indigenous people, since few or none study has been conducted so far. Aim of the studyEvaluate the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of some plants used as medicinal on an indigenous reserve in Rio das Cobras, Paraná, Brazil. Materials and methodsThe aqueous extracts were obtained by decoction and the 50% and 70% hydroalcoholic extracts by turbo extraction. The extracts were tested against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Leishmania amazonensis, Poliovirus and HSV-1. Cytotoxicity assay using VERO cells were also performed. ResultsNone of the extracts had a selectivity index (SI)>1 for any of the tested bacteria. Only Campomanesia eugenioides and Schinus terebinthifolius had an SI>1.0 for all of the tested Candida species. The best anti-Leishmania activity was obtained with Zanthoxylum rhoifolium and Schinus terebinthifolius. Extracts of Cordia americana were the most effective against herpes simplex virus type 1. Zanthoxylum rhoifolium was the most effective against Poliovirus, and Ocimum gratissimum was effective against both Poliovirus and Herpes Simplex virus. Among the plants investigated in the present study, Zanthoxylum rhoifolium had the fewest cytotoxic effect. ConclusionsThe plants investigated in the present study exhibited potential for future pharmacological uses, but additional studies, especially with regard to in vivo toxicity, must be conducted. The results of this preliminary survey are important for the Rio das Cobras Reserve community for the safe and effective use of plants in the treatment of some infectious diseases.

Antimicrobial Activities of Plants from the Apicaceae

The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of five plants containing furanocoumarins. Antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of Astrodaucus orientalis (L.) Drude, Bifora radians Bieb., Conium maculatum L., Crithmum maritimum L., Daucus carota L., and standard furanocoumarins (umbelliferone, xanthotoxin, and bergapten) were tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans using a microdilution method. The minimum inhibition dilution (MID) values of the extracts were determined. Astrodaucus orientalis showed the highest antibacterial activity.

Antimicrobial activity of plants used in traditional medicine of San Juan province, Argentine

Eighteen extracts from Acaena magellanica, Baccharis grisebachii, Ephedra breana, Oxalis erythrorhiza, Pachylaena atriplicifolia and Satureja parvifolia were assessed for antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi with the agar dilution method. The hexane (H) and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts of B. grisebachii and O. erythrorhiza showed the broadest spectrum of action against fungi, inhibiting all of the tested dermatophytes with MICs ranging from ≤25 to ≤1000 μg/ml. Trichophyton rubrum was the most susceptible species and Cryptococcus neoformans was inhibited only by the DCM extract of B. grisebachii with MIC of 600 μg/ml. Regarding the antibacterial activity, H and DCM extracts of B. grisebachii as well as the DCM of O. erythrorhiza, were active on methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus with MIC from ≤125 to ≤500 μg/ml. The DCM extract of B. grisebacchii was more active against methicillin-resistant than methicillin-sensitive strains.

Cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of plants from New Zealand's subantarctic islands

A total of 86 species of bryophytes, lichens and vascular plants were collected from New Zealand's subantarctic Campbell and Auckland Islands, including 18 subantarctic endemic species. Extracts of these species have been screened for antimicrobial activity and toxicity towards a P388 cell line. Of the main taxonomic groups collected, the proportion of extracts with some biological activity was highest for liverworts (25/29), intermediate for flowering plants (17/26) and lowest for mosses and horn worts (4/22). Extracts of six species showed repeatable, high biological activity warranting further investigation. The cytotoxicity of Ranunculus pinguis was due to the presence of ranunculin.

Studies on the cytotoxicity, antimicrobial and DNA-binding activities of plants used by the Ese'ejas

Thirty-nine extracts of 13 plants used traditionally as medicinal by the Ese'ejas were studied in order to determine their cytotoxic effect in the brine shrimp. Infusions showed no toxicity. Those plants that tested positive for methanolic and dichloromethane extracts were assayed for DNA-binding activity. Cytotoxicity was not due to the presence of compounds that interact with DNA. Antimicrobial activity of plants used to treat infectious diseases was also performed for the decoctions. These proved to be active against some of the test microrganisms used in the assay.
