Antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles (SP-AgNPs) synthesized from Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp. against selected foodborne pathogens

Foodborne diseases continue to pose a significant global health concern, causing a considerable number of deaths worldwide. In response to concerns surrounding bacterial resistance and the limitations of traditional antibiotics, there is a growing interest in exploring natural antibacterial agents as potential alternatives for addressing foodborne pathogens. Nowadays efforts are being made on exploring the potential of natural antibacterial agents against foodborne pathogens. In this study, the antibacterial efficacy of silver nanoparticles synthesized using S. polyanthum leaves extract (SP-AgNPs) against selected Gram-negative and Gram-positive foodborne pathogens was investigated by using multiple assays, including the well diffusion assay (WDA), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and time-kill assay. The well diffusion assay demonstrated the inhibitory potential of SP-AgNPs against all tested foodborne pathogens, with inhibition zones ranging from 10.16 + 1.25 to 13.16 + 1.52 mm. Furthermore, the MIC values ranged from 0.008 to 0.125 mg/mL, indicating the potent antibacterial activity of SP-AgNPs across a broad spectrum of foodborne pathogens. The MBC values, ranging from 0.008 to 0.250 mg/mL, further confirming the bactericidal ability of SP-AgNPs against these pathogens. In the time-kill experiment, most foodborne pathogens were entirely killed after 4 h of incubation at 4 × MIC concentration. However, only E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and S. Typhimurium showed a reduction in population to 3 Log10 CFU/mL, indicating a strong bactericidal effect of SP-AgNPs on most tested pathogens. In conclusion, this study provides compelling evidence that SP-AgNPs exhibit potent antibacterial activity against selected foodborne pathogens. The findings suggest that SP-AgNPs synthesized using S. polyanthum leaves extract hold great promise as a novel antibacterial agent for effectively controlling foodborne pathogens. These findings contribute to continuing efforts in developing alternative strategies to prevent foodborne diseases and enhance food safety.

The effect of temperature and molar ratio of silver salt (AgNO3) and TSC has been studied on the size and morphology of nanoparticles. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis.), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Biological evaluation of the optimized AgNPs against strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria showed low to moderate values of inhibition zones as compared to standard rifampicin.

Green synthesized nanoparticles are easily bio-available and eco-friendly in nature. Leaves of Dryopteris barbigera have medicinal properties. In this study, biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using D. barbigera leaf extract and their characterizations have been carried out. Surface plasmon spectra for AgNPs displayed absorbance peak with dark brown color at 418 nm. The synthesized AgNPs, were spherical with size ranging between 10.7-27.6 nm, lattice constant of 0.408 nm and crystallite size of 11.9 ± 2.9 nm. These AgNPs were biocompatible towards MCF-7 and A549 cancer cell lines and showed bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Sustainable Resources and their Use as Antibacterial Agents: A Review

Background:: Synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has attracted extensive vitality in numerous research areas such as drug delivery, biomedicine, catalysis etc. where continuous efforts are being made by scientists and engineers to investigate new dimensions for both technological and industrial advancements. Amongst numerous metallic nanoparticles, silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) is a novel metal species with low toxicity, higher stability and significant chemical, physical and biological properties. Methods:: In this, various methods for the fabrication of AgNPs are summarized. Importantly, we concentrated on the role of reducing agents of different plant parts, various working conditions, such as AgNO3 concentration, ratio of AgNO3/extract, incubation time, centrifugal conditions, size and shapes. Results:: This study suggested that eco-friendly and non toxic biomolecules present in the extracts (e.g. leaf, stem and root) of plants are used as reducing and capping agents for silver nanoparticles fabrication. This method of fabrication of silver nanoparticles using plants extracts is comparatively cost-effective and simple. A silver salt is simply reduced by biomolecules present in the extracts of these plants. In this review, we have emphasized the synthesis and antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles using various plant extracts. Conclusion:: Fabrication of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts have advantage over the other physical methods, as it is safe, eco-friendly and simple to use. Plants have huge potential for the fabrication of silver nanoparticles of wide potential of applications with desired shape and size.

Lethal Mechanisms of Nostoc-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles Against Different Pathogenic Bacteria.

BackgroundIncreasing antibiotic resistance and the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens have led to the need to develop new therapeutic agents to tackle microbial infections. Nano-antibiotics are a novel generation of nanomaterials with significant antimicrobial activities that target bacterial defense systems including biofilm formation, membrane permeability, and virulence activity.PurposeIn addition to AgNO3, the current study aimed to explore for first time the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized by Nostoc sp. Bahar_M (N-SNPs) and their killing mechanisms against Streptococcus mutans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium.MethodsPotential mechanisms of action of both silver species against bacteria were systematically explored using agar well diffusion, enzyme (lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and ATPase) and antioxidant (glutathione peroxidase and catalase) assays, and morphological examinations. qRT-PCR and SDS-PAGE were employed to investigate the effect of both treatments on mfD, flu, and hly gene expression and protein patterns, respectively.ResultsN-SNPs exhibited greater biocidal activity than AgNO3 against the four tested bacteria. E. coli treated with N-SNPs showed significant surges in LDH levels, imbalances in other antioxidant and enzyme activities, and marked morphological changes, including cell membrane disruption and cytoplasmic dissolution. N-SNPs caused more significant upregulation of mfD expression and downregulation of both flu and hly expression and increased protein denaturation compared with AgNO3.ConclusionN-SNPs exhibited significant inhibitory potential against E. coli by direct interfering with bacterial cellular structures and/or enhancing oxidative stress, indicating their potential for use as an alternative antimicrobial agent. However, the potential of N-SNPs to be usable and biocompatible antibacterial drug will evaluate by their toxicity against normal cells.

Comparative antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles prepared via chemical and biological synthesis

New and improved approaches are urgently needed to fight the increasing number of multi-drug resistant bacteria. The antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) prepared by standardized chemical and biological syntheses is compered here. Biological systems included extracts of Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage and extracellular growth broth of Aspergillus niger and Bacillus megaterium. The nanoparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, IR, and transmission electron microscopy. All of the AgNPs shared characteristic IR peaks and had an average size of 20–60 nm. The AgNPs were mainly spherical regardless of synthetic path. The synthesis based on the extracellular broth of the fungus, due to the highest biomass and active compounds concentration, resulted in a high yield of nanoparticle formation. These AgNPs also exhibited the highest inhibition zone against Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus. The syntheses reported here have no significant influence on AgNPs physical characteristics, as compared to literature, but represent processes with shorter reaction time. Additionally, the fungal based nanoparticles have superior antibacterial characteristics.

Antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles against multidrug resistant bacterial isolates from blood cultures

The aim of present study was to explore the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against multidrug-resistant (MDR) non-fermenting Gram negative bacterial (NFGNB) strains. Total 457 strains of NFGNB isolated from 13954 blood samples showed identification of 68.05% isolates as MDR. The most commonly reported MDR strains included Acinetobacter spp. (73.63%), Pseudomonas spp. (24.43%), and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (1.92%). Using representative MDR and reference strains, antibacterial potential of AgNPs was evaluated. AgNPs were chemically synthesized and characterized by UV–vis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Diameter of inhibition zone was measured from 10 to 21 mm and 12 to 23 mm with AgNPs (6.25 to 50 μg/mL) for test and reference strains respectively. Against representative Pseudomonas aeruginosa MDR isolate, MIC and MBC of AgNPs were found as 3.12 and 12.5 μg/mL, respectively. Chemically synthesized AgNPs shows the greater antibacterial efficacy for their future applications to treat infections caused by MDR strains.

Investigation of In Vitro Antioxidant and Antibacterial Potential of Silver Nanoparticles Obtained by Biosynthesis Using Beech Bark Extract

Green synthesis is one of the rapid and best ways for silver nanoparticles (AgNP) synthesis. In the present study, synthesis and bioactivity of AgNPs has been demonstrated using water beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) bark extract. The physical and chemical factors such as time, metal ion solution, and pH, which play a vital role in the AgNPs synthesis, were assessed. The AgNPs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the obtained AgNPs was evaluated. AgNPs were characterized by color change pattern, and the broad peak obtained at 420–475 nm with UV-Vis confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs. FT-IR results confirmed that phenols and proteins of beech bark extract are mainly responsible for capping and stabilization of synthesized AgNPs. TEM micrographs showed spherical or rarely polygonal and triangular particles with an average size of 32 nm at pH = 9, and 62 nm at pH = 4. Furthermore, synthesized AgNPs were found to exhibit antioxidant activity and have antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results indicate that bark extract of F. sylvatica L. is suitable for synthesizing stable AgNPs, which act as an excellent antimicrobial agent.

IN VITRO WOUND HEALING AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTY OF COTTON FABRICS COATED OPTIMIZED SILVER NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED USING PELTOPHORUM PTEROCARPUM LEAF EXTRACTS

Objective: The present study was aimed to study at investigating the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated cotton fabrics against different pathogens and also for their wound healing property using fibroblasts cells.
 Materials and Methods: The leaf extracts of Peltophorum pterocarpum were used for the synthesis of AgNPs and were characterizing using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering analysis, and zeta potential measurement. The AgNPs were coated on cotton fabrics and tested for their antibacterial efficacy using agar well diffusion method. The wound healing property of synthesized AgNPs was tested using fibroblast 3T3 cells.
 Results: The plant extracts of P. pterocarpum were utilized for AgNPs. The optimum condition for synthesizing AgNPs was found to be 1 mg/ml plant concentration, 7 pH, 1 mM silver nitrate concatenation, and incubation temperature of 37°C. The shape of synthesized AgNPs was found to be spherical with an average size between 20 and 50 nm, and elemental silver peaks were confirmed by EDX spectrum. The cotton fabrics coated with AgNPs show good zone of inhibition against all the tested pathogens and the treated fabrics were also characterized using scanning electron microscope which reveals the presence of AgNPs on the fabrics. The scratch assay reveals that the AgNPs have good wound healing activity when tested against fibroblast 3T3.
 Conclusion: The present results conclude that the synthesized AgNPs have good stability with potent antimicrobial activity when coated with cotton fabrics. The AgNPs also found to have good activity significant wound healing activity when tested using fibroblast cells.

Evaluation of the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized through the interaction of antibiotic and aqueous callus extract of Fagonia indica

Fagonia indica is a widely known medicinal plant. The extracts of Fagonia species contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids. Silver nanoparticles are known for antibacterial properties. In this study, AgNPs were synthesized using the callus extract of F. indica as a reducing agent. Characterization through different techniques suggests that the AgNPs absorbed light and gave SPR peaks at 414 nm while in case of ciprofloxacin supplemented callus mediated AgNPs the peak were recorded at 419 nm. Furthermore, FTIR analysis revealed the role of amides, acyl group, nitro group of callus extract of F. indica, and some functional groups of the ciprofloxacin in the reduction process as well as the capping and stabilization of AgNPs. Similarly, X-Ray Diffraction analysis indicate the structure of AgNPs as face-centered cubic crystalline particles. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs and ciprofloxacin and callus extract as control against resistant bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Citrobacter amalonaticus, Shigella sonnei, and Salmonella typhi was studied. The combination of AgNPs and antibiotic showed better antibacterial activity as compared to AgNPs alone and ciprofloxacin alone. Maximum inhibition zone of E. coli, C. amalonaticus, S. sonnei, and S. typhi in response to AgNPs and ciprofloxacin was 38.5 mm, 35.5 mm, 33 mm, and 35.5 mm, respectively. It can, therefore, be suggested that the AgNPs along with Ciprofloxacin might have worked in interaction and resulted in better antibacterial activity against all the tested pathogens.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant derived 4-N-methyl benzoic acid and evaluation of antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumor activity.

The present study is to investigate the antitumor, antioxidant and antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) synthesized from a phenolic derivative 4-N-methyl benzoic acid, isolated from a medicinal plant (Memecylon umbellatum Burm F). The Bio-inspired nanoparticles (NPs) were analyzed by using UV–vis spectroscopy, FTIR, HRTEM, Zeta potential and XRD techniques. The UV–vis spectroscopy study at the band of 430 nm confirmed the nanoparticles formation. HRTEM report showed that the AgNPs synthesized were in the size range 7–23 nm. The harvested nanoparticles were subjected to anti-bacterial assay and a dose dependent inhibitory action was observed against the tested human pathogens. Among the tested bacteria, Acinetobacter baumannii was found to be highly sensitive to AgNPs (diameter of zone of inhibition was 31 mm). Further, the silver nanoparticles exhibited a good anti-tumor activity against the breast cancer cell line (MCF 7) with an IC50 value of 42.19 µg/mL. As the present study confirmed a good antibacterial, antioxidant and antitumor activity in the nanoparticles synthesized using 4-N-methyl benzoic acid derived from a medicinal plant, the product can be further tested to formulate a good lead compound for biomedical applications.

Biogenic Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Avicennia marina Seed Extract and Its Antibacterial Potential

Avicennia marina is the most abundant and widely distributed mangrove species and has been used in traditional medicine for treating skin diseases, rheumatism, ulcers, and smallpox. However, the biomedical potential of its seeds remains poorly characterized. The current contribution investigated the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from aqueous A. marina seed extract. When characterized using UV analysis and TEM analysis, the nanoparticles exhibited maximum absorption at 420 nm and average size of 5–10 nm. Analysis by FTIR revealed eight prominent absorption peaks at 3333, 3305, 2927, 2107, 1565, 1301, 1135, and 773 cm−1 suggesting the involvement of amide, carboxylic, aliphatic amines, and amino acid groups in the seed extract in the capping of nanoparticles. The AgNPs displayed inhibitory activity against a range of human pathogenic bacterial species: Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 700603), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 43300), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 5129), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). E. coli was the most sensitive to the silver nanoparticles (MIC 6.25 μg/mL) followed by K. pneumonia and P. aeruginosa (MIC 12.5 μg/mL). E. faecalis was resistant to silver nanoparticles. The biosynthesized AgNPs from A. marina seed extract display broad spectrum antibacterial activity and may be useful in treating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

Production, characterization and antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles produced by Fusarium oxysporum and monitoring of protein-ligand interaction through in-silico approaches

The present study envisages biological production of silver nanoparticles using Fusarium oxysporum and in-silico identification of the antibacterial activity of the nanoparticles using protein-ligand interaction studies. The morphology of the nanoparticles was variable, with majority of them spherical in the size range 1–50 nm. For in-silico studies, two microorganisms, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were selected and metal docking was carried out using the licensed software SYBYL X 1.1.1. The ligand docked deeply into the binding pockets of the outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of both E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The results showed that silver may prove to be a strong antibacterial agent against both the pathogens, with the antibacterial action of silver being greater in the case of P. aeruginosa. The results obtained through in-silico studies were further validated by in-vitro approaches on both solid and liquid media to confirm the results obtained by in-silico analysis. The corroboration of in-silico and in-vitro results amply demonstrates the immense antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles against the selected pathogens.

Synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized from Coriandrum sativum L.

IntroductionNanoparticles (NPs) have become very important owing to their various uses. In this research, an environmentally friendly biological technique was used to synthesize silver nanoparticles with Coriandrum sativum L. The objective of this research to use the source for the fabrication of silver NPs from C. sativum L., and to check the activity of the fabricated silver NPs was determined versus a couple of gram negative and a couple of gram positive bacteria in the presence of antibiotic viz. gentamicin to judge their impact. MethodologyA silver nitrate solution, which served as the reducing and capping agent, was mingled with coriander leaf extract. The solution’s temperature and pH were maintained at 75°C and 8.6, respectively. The observed mean particle size (z-average) and polydispersity index were 390.2nm and 0.452, respectively. The synthesized Ag NPs were characterized using different techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) analysis. The globular shape of the silver nanoparticles was depicted in SEM illustrations. ResultsXRD data revealed the mean size of the particles was 11.9nm. The FTIR analysis showed the existence of various functional groups, including CO and OH. When their antibacterial ability was tested, it was found that the fabricated Ag NPs inhibited Bacillus subtilis, Pasteurella multocida, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus, with a greater effect against B. subtilis and P. multocida compared to E. aerogenes and S. aureus. ConclusionIt has been concluded small silver NPs benefited from a higher surface area ratio, as shown by the results of experiments where smaller particles had a better bactericidal proficiency than large silver-based NPs. Silver-based NPs infiltrate bacterial cells, as well as interfere with their exterior membrane. Silver ions also have the potential to interact with bacterial DNA, inhibiting the reproductive system of the cell.

Photocatalytic and antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles derived from pineapple waste: process optimization and modeling kinetics for dye removal

Green chemistry offers several benefits over other synthesis routes of nanoparticles due to their eco-friendly attributes during their formulation as well as application stages. In the present study, an aqueous extract of Ananas comosus (Pineapple) peel waste was successfully exploited for the synthesis of ultra small (average size 14–20 nm) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) without adding any reducing or stabilizing agents. Two major factors, i.e., concentration ratio between silver ion precursor versus peel extract and synthesis pH were found to be influential for achieving monodispersed and stable AgNPs. Biogenic AgNPs adorned with natural moieties demonstrated good photocatalytic activity against methylene blue (MB) dye under sunlight illumination for various conditions. The process variable, e.g., solution pH, initial MB concentration and contact time were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on three levels Box-Behnken design. A maximum MB removal of 98.04% was achieved at optimized values of 9.96 pH, 40 ppm initial dye concentration and 173 min of contact time. The kinetics of MB removal was best fitted to its first order kinetic model (R2 = 0.996) in concurrence with intraparticle diffusion-mediated adsorption. AgNPs were also found to be effective to kill pathogenic bacterial strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis as characterized from zone of inhibition (ZoI) and viability tests. Undergoing photochemical reactions, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was elucidated as the major mechanism of AgNPs’ toxicity modulating membrane permeability. This strategy is not only economically viable and environmentally benign, synthesized AgNPs were capable to remove methylene blue dye almost completely under ambient conditions through solar energy.

Dye degradation and antibacterial activity of green synthesized silver nanoparticles using Ipomoea digitata Linn. flower extract

A new greener approach for the synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles using aqueous flower extract of Ipomoea digitata Linn. is reported in this study. The nature of silver nanoparticles was analyzed by various techniques. The silver nanoparticles produced a peak centered near 412 nm which confirmed the synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy portrayed the polydispersed nature of the nanoparticles, and a distinct peak at 3 keV in energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum confirmed the elemental silver. X-ray diffraction studies showed the presence of 111 reflection plane of a face-centered cubic structure. The zeta potential value was − 25.1 mV which substantiated the stability of the nanoparticles. The antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles was verified using well diffusion method. The silver nanoparticles appreciably inhibited growth of multi-drug resistant bacteria like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The nanoparticles also exhibited a good catalytic reduction for methylene blue dye in the presence of NaBH4. It followed a pseudo-first order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.1714 min−1.

Antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized using Madhuca longifolia flower extract as a green resource

The green and one-step synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been proposed as simple and ecofriendly. In the present study, a flower extract of Madhuca longifolia was used for the reduction of silver nitrate into AgNPs, with phytochemicals from the flower extract as a reducing and stabilizing agents. The synthesized AgNPs were spherical and oval shaped and about 30–50 nm sizes. The appearance of a brown color in the reaction mixture is a primary indication of AgNPs formation, and it was confirmed by observing UV-visible spectroscopy peak at 436 nm. The Energy Dispersive X-ray spectra and X-ray diffraction analysis results together confirm that the synthesized nanoparticles contain silver and silver chloride nanoparticles. The Zeta potential analysis indicates presence of negative charges on synthesized AgNPs. The FT-IR study represents involvement of functional groups in AgNPs synthesis. Synthesized AgNPs shows potential antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. M. longifolia flower is a good source for AgNPs synthesis and synthesized AgNPs are applicable as antibacterial agent in therapeutics.
