The purpose of this study was to assess the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Ixora chinensis and Cascabela thevetia leaf. Leaf parts of Ixora chinensis and Cascabela thevetia plants were subjected to prepare the extracts with pure methanol and ethanol as solvent. These leaf extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant and antibacterial potentialities by utilizing the DPPH assay and disc diffusion methods, respectively. All the leaf extracts exhibited DPPH radical scavenging ability, among them ethanolic leaf extracts of Ixora chinensis and combined methanolic extracts of both leaf demonstrated the substantial antioxidant potentiality with the 18.52 and 29.64 µg/ml as IC50 value, respectively. In the context of antibacterial activity, both leaf extracts (Methanol and ethanol) of Cascabela thevetia showed low to moderate antibacterial activity, generating almost similar zone of inhibition against three (Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Vibrio cholerae C6706) of eleven investigated bacterial strains with the 7 to 10 millimeters (Diameter). The current outcomes conclude that leaf extracts of the Ixora chinensis and Cascabela thevetia could be utilized to develop the biopharmaceutical agents.

Evaluation of antibacterial activity of vitamin C against human bacterial pathogens.

Now a day's multidrug resistance phenomenon has become the main cause for concern and there has been an inadequate achievement in the development of novel antibiotics to treat the bacterial infections. Therefore, there is an unmet need to search for novel adjuvant. Vitamin C is one such promising adjuvant. The present study was aimed to elucidate the antibacterial effect of vitamin C at various temperatures (4°C, 37°C and 50°C) and pH (3, 8, and 11), against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria at various concentrations (5-20 mg/ml) through agar well diffusion method. Growth inhibition of all bacterial strains by vitamin C was concentration-dependent. Vitamin C significantly inhibited the growth of Gram-positive bacteria: Bacillus licheniformis (25.3 ± 0.9 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (22.0 ± 0.6 mm), Bacillus subtilis (19.3 ± 0.3 mm) and Gram-negative bacteria: Proteus mirabilis (27.67 ± 0.882 mm), Klebsiella pneumoniae (21.33±0.9 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18.0 ± 1.5 mm) and Escherichia coli (18.3 ± 0.3 mm). The stability of vitamin C was observed at various pH values and various temperatures. Vitamin C showed significant antibacterial activity at acidic pH against all bacterial strains. Vitamin C remained the stable at different temperatures. It was concluded that vitamin C is an effective and safe antibacterial agent that can be used in the future as an adjunct treatment option to combat infections in humans.

This study aimed to study the effect Zingiber officinale and Allium sativum crude extract on bacterial isolates from children suffer from urinary tract infection (UTI) and compare it with the activity of antibiotics. The bacterial isolated were collected from variety of hospitals during the period 6-1-2021 to 5-4-2022. The isolates were cultured and identified. 100 bacterial isolates identified as follows Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2), Escherichia coli (65), Staphylococcus aureus (20), Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus mirabilis (2) for each, Scaphirhynchus albus, Morganella morganii and Micrococcus (1), Staphylococcus capitis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter freundii and Pseudomonas luteola (1). Different degrees of sensitivity were shown by the isolates for different types of antibiotics. Antibacterial activity of aqueous Z. officinale extract was (7–30) mm while the alcoholic extract of Z. officinale was (4–20) mm. aqueous A. sativum extract (3–26) mm while alcoholic extraction (5–22) mm.

Influence of Herbal Fillers Addition on Selected Properties of Silicone Subjected to Accelerated Aging.

This work aims to assess the impact of the type and percentage of powdered herbs on selected properties of silicone-based composites. The matrix was an addition cross-linked platinum-cured polydimethylsiloxane. The fillers were powdered thyme and sage, which were introduced at 5, 10, and 15 wt.%. The introduced fillers differed in composition, morphology, and grain size. The grain morphology showed differences in the size and shape of the introduced fillers. The qualitative and quantitative assessment resulting from the incorporation was conducted based on tests of selected properties: density, wettability, rebound resilience, hardness, and tensile strength. The incorporation slightly affected the density and wettability of the silicone. Rebound resilience and hardness results differed depending on the filler type and fraction. However, tensile strength decreased, which may be due to the matrix's distribution of fillers and their chemical composition. Antibacterial activity evaluation against S. aureus proved the bacteriostatic properties of the composites. Accelerated aging in PBS solution further deteriorated the mechanical properties. FTIR and DSC have demonstrated the progressive aging of the materials. In addition, the results showed an overall minimal effect of fillers on the silicone chemical backbone and melting temperature. The developed materials can be used in applications that do not require high mechanical properties.

Composition analysis and antibacterial activity evaluation of different crude extracts of Mentha piperita (Lamiaceae)

Globally, the main target of scientists is to examine new medicinally beneficial plants for the preparation of herbal drugs as well as to explore possible uses in the food industry. In this regard, the target of our current study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity and biochemical analyses of the leaf extracts of Omani Mentha piperita L (M. piperita). The selected plant leaves coarse powder samples were extracted by using the Soxhlet extraction process with methanol at 65oC for a period of 72 hours. The evaporation of methanol was done by a rotary evaporator under reduced pressure and temperature. The hydro alcoholic extract was fractionated with the various polarities of solvents with an increasing pattern. The biochemical evaluation and pharmacological activity of the prepared local plant extracts were completed by using established methods. The different polarities of leaves extracts showed positive biochemical tests of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, tannins and triterpenoids. The microbial activity of the fractioned plant extracts was tested with improved agar gel method. The different polarity extracts at different concentrations did not display any activity against the tested Gram (+) Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram (-) Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonus aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacterial strains. Based on the biochemical and pharmacological evaluation results, the selected whole plant and its potential extracts might be used traditionally as natural antibiotics to treat infectious diseases.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity of Extracts of Curcuma Longa L. Rhizome and Estimation of Curcuminoid by HPLC

Curcuma longa L. rhizome extracts have polyphenolic secondary metabolites called curcuminoid and various volatile oils. These compounds exhibit wide spectrum of antibacterial activity. Ethanol and petroleum ether C. longa rhizome extracts were studied for their antibacterial action against two bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This activity had evaluated by employing Agar Well Diffusion method. Curcuminoid was interpreted by pattern of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The ethanol extract exhibited inhibitory effects against E. coli and S. aureus at concentration 150 mg/ml with diameter of inhibition zone (23.000 ± 0.57735 and 27.000 ± 0.57735mm) respectively. On the contrary, petroleum ether extract had inhibitory effects for E. coli and S. aureus at concentration 150 mg/ml in diameter of inhibition zone (39.000 ± 0.57735 and 41.000 ± 0.57735mm) respectively. Quantitative analysis for the curcuminoid compounds from C. longa rhizome extracts revealed highest curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin (9.12, 5.93 and 23.96 µg /ml) respectively in the extract of petroleum ether. We concluded that the C. longa extracts exhibited inhibitory effects against pathological bacterial growth. The essential oils obtained by petroleum ether extract of C. longa rhizome was more influential inhibition than ethanol extract against E. coli and S. aureus.

Cationic Liposomes with Different Lipid Ratios: Antibacterial Activity, Antibacterial Mechanism, and Cytotoxicity Evaluations.

Due to their strong bacterial binding and bacterial toxicity, cationic liposomes have been utilized as effective antibacterial materials in many studies. However, few researchers have systematically compared their antibacterial activity with their mammalian cell cytotoxicity or have deeply explored their antibacterial and cytotoxicity mechanisms. Here, we prepared a series of cationic liposomes (termed CLs) using dimethyldioctadecylammonium chloride (DODAC) and lecithin at different molar ratios. CLs have the ability to effectively bind with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Further, the CLs with high molar ratios of DODAC (30 and 40 mol%) can disrupt the bacterial wall/membrane, efficiently inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). More importantly, we carefully compared the antibacterial activity and the mammalian cell cytotoxicity of various CLs differing in DODAC contents and liposomal concentrations and revealed that, whether they are bacterial or mammalian cells, an increasing DODAC content in CLs can lead to an elevated cytotoxicity level. Further, there exists a critical DODAC contents (>20 mol%) in CLs to endow them with effective antibacterial ability. However, the variation in the DODAC content and liposomal concentration of CLs has different degrees of influence on the antibacterial activity or cytotoxicity. For example, CLs at high DODAC content (i.e., CL0.3 and CL0.4) could effectively kill both types of bacterial cells but only cause negligible toxicity to mammalian cells. We believe that a systematic comparison between the antibacterial activity and the cytotoxicity of CLs with different DODAC contents will provide an important reference for the potential clinical applications of cationic liposomes.

In vitro evaluation of antibacterial activity and biocompatibility of synergistically cross-linked gelatin-alginate hydrogel beads as gentamicin carriers

This work aimed to develop biodegradable millimeter-scale spherical hydrogel beads with highly interconnected pores, which effectively serve dual functions for cell growth and antibiotic release. Sodium alginate and gelatin were used as the matrix for the hydrogel beads, which were synergistically cross-linked by using different ratios of the cross-linkers N-ethyl-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide and calcium chloride. Spherical porous hydrogel beads after sucrose leaching were prepared with particle sizes of 2–3 and 4–6 mm. Their physicochemical properties, including pore size, surface and cross-sectional morphology, degree of crosslinking and free amines, swelling, and degradation, were measured. Selected 2–3 mm hydrogel beads were further impregnated with gentamicin and analyzed for biocompatibility and antibacterial activity. The results showed that the synergistically cross-linked hydrogel was an internally porous structure with a porosity of about 80% and a uniform pore size distribution between 90 and 212 μm, with no significant difference in the average pore size of 160 μm for all beads. After soaking for 24 h, the beads absorbed approximately 50 times their weight (w/w) while maintaining a stable pore size without significant swelling. The cross-linker concentration of carbodiimide/CaCl2 was chosen to be 1/0.5 wt% to reduce the cytotoxicity that might be caused by the release of Cl ions. The polar interaction of the hydrogel with gentamicin accelerate the degradation of the beads after impregnation with the antibiotic gentamicin, resulting in a burst release of the antibiotic. Therefore, the gentamicin-impregnated hydrogel beads had better antibacterial activity compared with the hydrogel without antibiotics. However, these gentamicin-impregnated beads had reduced resistance to hydrogel degradation and biocompatibility. The developed hydrogel beads had good antibacterial activity and can be used in combination with different medical devices to further improve biocompatibility and reduce the risk of surgical failure caused by infection.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity and Characterization of Phytochemical Compounds from Selected Mangrove Plants

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of n-butanol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol, and chloroform extracts of the sponges and leaves of different mangrove species (Bruguiera cylindrica, Suaeda maritima, Ceriops decandra, Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora apiculata, Suaeda monoica, Avicennia marina, and Rhizohora mucronata) against Proteus mirabilis ATCC 7002. Methods and Results: Agar well diffusion method was used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of selected mangrove extracts. The active compounds from mangrove sponges and leaves with various solvents were examined under Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The ethyl acetate extracts, methanol extracts, chloroform extracts, n-butanol extracts, and petroleum ether extracts of selected mangrove leaves (B. cylindrical, S. maritime, A. officinalis, S. monoica, A. marina, R. mucronata) showed good antibacterial activity against P. mirabilis ATCC 7002. FTIR analysis of crude methanol extract of S. monoica showed the presence of amide and alkane groups in phytochemicals. For crude methanol extract of R. mucronata, the presence of phenol, nitro, amide, and alkane groups was revealed. Conclusion: the results obtained revealed industrially important mangrove extracts and the functional groups of plant compounds responsible for great antibacterial activity.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity

In this research, iron oxide-NPs were synthesized by leek leaves extract using the green method biosynthesis. It helps as reducing and cap agents. Characteristics of nanoparticles are obtained by (UV–Visible) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray diffraction pattern showed iron oxide peaks, the mean crystalline size was 37.12[Formula: see text]nm. Electron microscope field emission scanning (FESEM) was used to investigate the morphology of iron oxide-NPs. Results of the biological tests showed how iron oxide nanoparticles affected both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as various inhibitor registrations and the influence of iron material on bacteria inhibition were demonstrated.

Optimization, characterization, and evaluation of antioxidant and antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles synthesized from Hippophae salicifolia D. Don

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were produced from methanol and consecutive aqueous extracts of the underutilized Northeast Indian-grown Hippophae salicifolia leaves and berries. The parameters used in the synthesis process, like extract concentration, AgNO 3 concentration, pH, temperature, and time, were optimized to achieve a higher yield of Ag NPs. PH was the most critical parameter in regulating the size and yield of NPs. Ag NPs were successfully synthesized at optimum conditions and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, DLS, FTIR, XRD, EDX, FESEM, and FETEM. TEM analysis depicted that sea buckthorn leaves and berries extract mediated Ag NPs were monodispersed and spherical with an average particles size of 7.87 ± 2.9 mm to 13.86 ± 5 mm, revealing that Ag NPs synthesized from aqueous extracts are smaller in size than those synthesized from methanol. The synthesized Ag NPs were evaluated for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Ag NPs produced from methanol extract of leaves exhibited the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activity of 1.29 ± 0.3 µg/mL and 1.9 µg/mL, respectively. Leaves extract mediated Ag NPs showed better antioxidant activity than Pure ascorbic acid in the ABTS assay. Overall, the findings indicate that Ag NPs synthesized from Hippophae salicifolia leaves and berries extract to have significant antioxidant and antibacterial potential for controlling and preventing bacterial infections.
