Pitfalls and windfalls of detecting demographic declines using population genetics in long-lived species.

Detecting recent demographic changes is a crucial component of species conservation and management, as many natural populations face declines due to anthropogenic habitat alteration and climate change. Genetic methods allow researchers to detect changes in effective population size (Ne) from sampling at a single timepoint. However, in species with long lifespans, there is a lag between the start of a decline in a population and the resulting decrease in genetic diversity. This lag slows the rate at which diversity is lost, and therefore makes it difficult to detect recent declines using genetic data. However, the genomes of old individuals can provide a window into the past, and can be compared to those of younger individuals, a contrast that may help reveal recent demographic declines. To test whether comparing the genomes of young and old individuals can help infer recent demographic bottlenecks, we use forward-time, individual-based simulations with varying mean individual lifespans and extents of generational overlap. We find that age information can be used to aid in the detection of demographic declines when the decline has been severe. When average lifespan is long, comparing young and old individuals from a single timepoint has greater power to detect a recent (within the last 50 years) bottleneck event than comparing individuals sampled at different points in time. Our results demonstrate how longevity and generational overlap can be both a hindrance and a boon to detecting recent demographic declines from population genomic data.

Czech Republic butterfly barcoding reveals that distribution of genetic lineages depends on species traits

AbstractAimThe distribution of within‐species lineages has been affected by Quaternary climate changes, and population differentiation has been influenced by species life history traits. We investigated whether the distribution of individual mitochondrial genetic lineages reflects the constituent species' traits. Using the functionally diverse group of butterflies, we examined which lineages are present in Central Europe, an important suture zone.LocationCzech Republic and Western Palearctic.TaxonA total of 140 butterfly species.MethodsWe sequenced DNA barcodes (cytochrome c oxidase 1) (959 sequences) of the entire Czech Republic butterfly fauna and used Barcoding of Life Data System to visualise the species' biogeographic patterns across Europe. We categorised the distribution patterns of lineages inhabiting the Czech Republic, and used multivariate statistics to interpret these categories by the butterflies' habitats, life history traits and threat levels.ResultsOpen habitat dwellers with specialist traits belonged to Eastern, Southern and temperate lineages. Habitat generalists and woodland dwellers belonged to the Western lineage, formed several lineages or displayed low genetic diversity; they often developed on woody plants, were large‐winged and had long flight periods. The most threatened species were the specialists of Southern, Eastern and temperate lineages.Main ConclusionsThe distribution of lineages in Central Europe reflects the history of Quaternary ecosystems: during cold periods of the Pleistocene, the diverse open habitats prevailed and species could expand westwards. Such species also suffer the most under the current anthropogenic habitat alteration. On the other hand, the mobile generalists and woodland dwellers expanded to Central Europe during the Holocene. Our approach of linking the distribution of lineages with species traits can be transferred to other study systems, and we show that DNA barcoding of under‐sampled areas represents a powerful tool for discovering the driving forces of biogeography.

Habitat alteration or climate: What drives the densities of an invading ungulate?

Anthropogenic habitat alteration and climate change are two well-known contributors to biodiversity loss through changes to species distribution and abundance; yet, disentangling the effects of these two factors is often hindered by their inherent confound across both space and time. We leveraged a contrast in habitat alteration associated with the jurisdictional boundary between two Canadian provinces to evaluate the relative effects of spatial variation in habitat alteration and climate on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) densities. White-tailed deer are an invading ungulate across much of North America, whose expansion into Canada's boreal forest is implicated in the decline of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), a species listed as Threatened in Canada. We estimated white-tailed deer densities using 300 remote cameras across 12 replicated 50 km2 landscapes over 5 years. White-tailed deer densities were significantly lower in areas where winter severity was higher. For example, predicted deer densities declined from 1.83 to 0.35 deer/km2 when winter severity increased from the lowest value to the median value. There was a tendency for densities to increase with increasing habitat alteration; however, the magnitude of this effect was approximately half that of climate. Our findings suggest that climate is the primary driver of white-tailed deer populations; however, understanding the mechanisms underpinning this relationship requires further study of over-winter survival and fecundity. Long-term monitoring at the invasion front is needed to evaluate the drivers of abundance over time, particularly given the unpredictability of climate change and increasing prevalence of extreme weather events.

Habitat suitability of Unionidae host fish in the Rhine Delta

Unionid populations are declining worldwide as they are threatened by anthropogenic habitat alterations, the introduction of invasive alien species and the effects of climate change. Several studies have focused on the habitat preferences of adult mussels but none to date have reported on the importance of the habitat preferences of host fish species. The aim of this study was to determine the habitat preferences of unionid host fish species in the Netherlands, to examine potential differences between native and alien host fish species, and to evaluate the effect of alien host fish species on unionid dispersal. Species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) were constructed for the range of occurrences and laboratory tolerance of host fish species in the Netherlands for water temperature, substrate type, flow velocity, and water depth. A case study was selected to assess the suitability to substrate type, flow velocity and water depth of a novel river habitat along longitudinal training dams in the river Waal. Unionid host fish species in the Netherlands preferred shallow littoral zones (0.1 m) with low flow velocity (0.05 m/s), an average water temperature of the Rhine delta (15°C), and most substrate types (ranging from silt to cobbles). Boulder substrate was the most limiting factor of the abiotic factors assessed for both native and alien host fish species. Management options for unionid populations should include host fish species in their assessments while focusing on creating and maintaining areas with limited boulders and implementing alien host fish species removal measures.

Climate change alone cannot explain boreal caribou range recession in Quebec since 1850.

The contraction of species range is one of the most significant symptoms of biodiversity loss worldwide. While anthropogenic activities and habitat alteration are major threats for several species, climate change should also be considered. For species at risk, differentiating the effects of human disturbances and climate change on past and current range transformations is an important step towards improved conservation strategies. We paired historical range maps with global atmospheric reanalyses from different sources to assess the potential effects of recent climate change on the observed northward contraction of the range of boreal populations of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in Quebec (Canada) since 1850. We quantified these effects by highlighting the discrepancies between different southern limits of the caribou's range (used as references) observed in the past and reconstitutions obtained through the hindcasting of the climate conditions within which caribou are currently found. Hindcasted southern limits moved ~105 km north over time under all reanalysis datasets, a trend drastically different from the ~620 km reported for observed southern limits since 1850. The differences in latitudinal shift through time between the observed and hindcasted southern limits of distribution suggest that caribou range recession should have been only 17% of what has been observed since 1850 if recent climate change had been the only disturbance driver. This relatively limited impact of climate reinforces the scientific consensus stating that caribou range recession in Quebec is mainly caused by anthropogenic drivers (i.e. logging, development of the road network, agriculture, urbanization) that have modified the structure and composition of the forest over the past 160 years, paving the way for habitat-mediated apparent competition and overharvesting. Our results also call for a reconsideration of past ranges in models aiming at projecting future distributions, especially for endangered species.

Predicting human-wildlife interaction in urban environments through agent-based models

Synurbic species adapt to global urbanization by increasingly inhabiting urban environments, where social and ecological factors, such as anthropogenic food resources and habitat alterations, promote close human-wildlife interactions. Ineffective management of these interactions can result in conflicts, altered animal population dynamics, and increased public and private expenditures. This study presents the Barcelona wild boar (BCNWB)-prototype model, a spatially explicit, incremental agent-based simulation that captures interactions between citizens and wild boar (Sus scrofa) agents in fine-scale GIS-based scenarios in Barcelona. Developed using GAMA software, the model's results were analyzed with QGIS and R software. The model aims to simulate the dynamics of the social-ecological system underlying the urban ecosystem use by synurbic wild boars and their interactions with humans in the (peri)urban area of Barcelona, Spain.The BCNWB-prototype model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting the magnitude and location of wild boar movements (multiple-resolution-goodness-of-fit = 0.73) compared to reported wild boar presences in Barcelona. The model also forecasted 115 attack events and 1,442 direct feeding events during a one-year simulation period, as compared to the actual 150 attacks and 1,858 feeding events reported annually. The model’s strong performance highlights its potential as a predictive tool for identifying priority areas for human-wild boar interactions and conflicts. Additionally, the model could be employed to assess the cost-effectiveness of management strategies and evaluate the spread, transmission risks, and public health implications of pathogens carried by wild boars.

Influence of habitat alteration on the structure of helminth communities in small mammals: a systematic review and critical appraisal of theory and current evidence.

Despite the extensive information on the effects of habitat alteration on the structure of helminth communities in small mammals, the evidence is still inconclusive. A systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guideline to compile and synthesize available literature on the influence of habitat alteration on the structure of helminth communities in small mammals. The aim of this review was to describe the variation in infection rates of helminth species associated with habitat alteration and to discuss the theoretical framework that may explain such changes in relation to parasite, host, and environmental features. Twenty-three scientific articles published between 2005 and 2022 were reviewed, 22 of which investigated parasite prevalence, 10 parasite burden, and 14 parasite richness in both altered and natural habitats. Information in assessed articles suggests that the structure of helminth communities in small mammals can be impacted by anthropogenic habitat alteration in various ways. Infection rates of monoxenous and heteroxenous helminths may increase or decrease in small mammals depending on whether their hosts (definitive and intermediate) are available, and environmental and host conditions modify the survival and transmission of parasitic forms. Also, given that habitat alteration may favor inter-species contacts, transmission rates of low host-specific helminths could be increased due to exposure to new reservoir hosts. In a continually changing world, it is essential to assess the spatio-temporal variations of helminth communities in wildlife inhabiting altered and natural habitats to determine potential impacts on wildlife conservation and public health.

Using multiple lines of evidence to assess recovery potential of a warm water fish population in a cold water impacted river

IntroductionHumans have substantially altered landscapes across the globe, generating novel ecosystems with varying states of modification. The principles of reconciliation ecology emphasise that such novel ecosystems must also be considered for conservation outcomes. This requires an understanding of how anthropogenic habitat alterations in a novel ecosystem may disrupt life cycle processes of key biota, thereby enabling the development of management strategies that may bypass or ameliorate potential bottlenecks in life history stages. We explore this by assessing Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii), a native fish species of considerable cultural, recreational and conservation significance in a severely altered river reach in south-eastern Australia. This species was considered to have disappeared in the reach following alterations to the river’s thermal profile (cold water pollution - CWP), but instead has persisted.MethodsWe examined the life cycle of Murray cod and use multiple lines of evidence to assess the impacts of CWP pollution on key processes such as adult migration, recruitment and juvenile survival. We also evaluated the potential for recovery and persistence of the species in this novel system using mitigation measures such as flow management and stocking and opportunistically tested their effectiveness.ResultsWe found the key impact pathway of CWP on the Murray cod population is via its effects on the key processes influencing natural recruitment. Conversely, the effects of CWP on emigration and survival of larger juveniles and adults did not appear to be a major bottleneck for the population. Using a stochastic population model, we showed that the population could be sustained by stocking and opportunistic water management while still meeting irrigation demands. Monitoring to test our recommendations showed natural recruitment and improved survival of stocked fish during years with limited flow releases, thereby corroborating our predictions.DiscussionOur use of multiple lines of evidence to assess a species’ responses to impacts of habitat alteration in a novel ecosystem enabled the formulation of recommendations for management that could then be tested. The success of such actions add to the growing body of literature that shows species of conservation significance can be maintained in novel ecosystems which should be specifically considered within the context of conservation planning across the landscape.

Occurrence and characterisation of Eustrongylides species in Australian native birds and fish

In Australia, nematodes belonging to the genus Eustrongylides were believed to be endemic species until the late 20th century when they were all considered to be E. excisus, invalid or inquirendae. Although these nematodes have frequently been reported in Australian fish, reptiles, and birds and cause disease or mortality among them, there has been no attempt to date to characterise them genetically. Globally, also, no one has validated or defined suitable genetic markers to distinguish between species of Eustrongylides. In this study, adult Eustrongylides from little black cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris; n = 3) and larvae from mountain galaxias (Galaxias olidus, n = 2) and a Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii, n = 1), and a Murray cod-trout cod hybrids (Maccullochella peelii x Maccullochella macquariensis, n = 1) were available for morphological examination and molecular characterisation. The adult nematodes from cormorants were identified as E. excisus. Sequences of the 18S and ITS regions were then obtained for all nematodes, which were identical among all specimens (larvae and adults) and also identical to those of E. excisus available in the GenBank. However, only one base pair difference exists between the 18S sequences of E. excisus and E. ignotus, with limited sequences available in GenBank accompanied with proper morphological data for the nematodes. With that limitation in mind, identifying our specimens as E. excisus suggests spill-over – that it is an introduced parasite species that has successfully established its life cycle among Australian native species – may have occurred. Our study is the first report of E. excisus in the little black cormorant, P. sulcirostris. Our results do not exclude the possibility of the occurrence of other species of Eustrongylides, either native or exotic, in Australia. This parasite is zoonotic and with increasing demand for fish and changing dietary preferences, such as the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, its occurrence in the flesh of the fish is concerning. This parasite is also associated with anthropogenic habitat alteration affecting the reproductive success of the infected hosts. Therefore, awareness among the relevant authorities of the presence of the parasite in Australia and its adverse impact on native animals is crucial for the success of conservation plans such as fish recovery and relocation efforts.

Spatiotemporal risk factors predict landscape‐scale survivorship for a northern ungulate

AbstractEffective wildlife conservation requires decomposing the drivers of population dynamics for species affected by anthropogenic habitat alterations. Ungulates are often the focus of management actions to restore habitat and maintain connectivity as they are sensitive to landscape disturbances. We used Bayesian proportional hazards models to assess anthropogenic risk factors that could potentially predict landscape‐scale survivorship for pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in the Northern Sagebrush Steppe ecosystem, where extensive habitat alterations occurred from the conversion of native sagebrush grasslands to agricultural lands. Using 170 adult female pronghorn monitored from 2003 to 2011, we tested the importance of linear features (road and fence densities) and forage productivity (maximum decadal normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI]) for spatiotemporal pronghorn mortality risk, while accounting for a seasonally varying proxy of snow depth. We found moderate support for the effects of linear features on mortality risk as coefficient estimates translated to predicted declines in survivorship of 27.1% over the observed range of road densities (0–1.4 km/km2) and 11.8% over the range of fence densities (0–6.1 km/km2) encountered by pronghorn. Our results also suggested that agricultural areas could act as ecological traps for pronghorn, based on mortality risk increasing by a factor of 14.3% with every 0.1 increase in maximum decadal NDVI in summer (range = 0.38–0.73). Like our previous findings, we found considerable support for the effects of average depth (in centimeters) of snow water equivalent (SWE; SWE depth = snow depth × snow density/water density) within pronghorn seasonal ranges, with mortality risk increasing by 45.7% with every 1 cm increase in SWE depth (range = 0–5.37 cm). We then developed the first broadscale, spatially explicit map of predicted annual pronghorn survivorship based on anthropogenic features and environmental gradients to identify areas for conservation and habitat restoration efforts. These efforts to highlight anthropogenic risk factors on the landscape will hopefully support conservation and habitat restoration for pronghorn populations at the northern periphery of their range.

Feeding and reproduction of striped snakehead Channa striata (Bloch, 1793) inhabiting the Gangetic river system

The striped snakehead Channa striata is a valuable food fish and has a high market value. The feeding and natural breeding grounds of this economically important fish species have been reduced due to increasing anthropogenic activities and habitat alterations in the Gangetic River system. The present study was undertaken to assess the feeding and reproductive biology of C. striata, which is widely distributed in India and many other Asian countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, China, etc.). A total of 400 fish specimens were collected from three sites on three different rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. Feeding habits, feeding intensity, gonadosomatic index, fecundity, maturity stages based on macroscopic studies, and sex ratio were examined. C. striata was found to be a carnivorous species (dominantly piscivorous). The feeding intensity varied according to season and fish size, with a higher intensity being observed during pre-spawning and post-spawning seasons. The reproductive biology of the striped snakehead from the Gangetic River system demonstrated that the gamete maturation occurred during May to July. The fecundity of C. striata ranged from 3652 to 48,450 eggs. Fecundity was linearly correlated with body length, body weight, and ovarian weight. The average ratio of males to females was observed to be 1:3.2.

Habitat-Specific Foraging by Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) in the San Francisco Estuary, California: Implications for Tidal Restoration

Non-native predatory fish strongly affect aquatic communities, and anthropogenic habitat alterations can exacerbate their effects. Loss of natural habitat, and restoration actions that reverse habitat loss, can modify relationships between non-native predators and prey. Predicting how these relationships will change is often difficult because insufficient information exists on the habitat-specific feeding ecology of non-native predators. To address this information gap, we examined diets of non-native Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis; 63–671 mm standard length; estimated age 1–5 y) in the San Francisco Estuary during spring and summer in three habitat types—marsh, shoal, and channel—with the marsh habitat type serving as a model for ongoing and future restoration. Based on a prey-specific index of relative importance, Striped Bass diets were dominated by macroinvertebrates in spring and summer (amphipods in spring, decapods and isopods in summer). In spring, diets were relatively consistent across habitats. In summer, marsh diets were dominated by sphaeromatid isopods and shoal/channel diets by idoteid amphipods and decapods. Striped Bass consumed a variety of native and non-native fishes, primarily Prickly Sculpin (Cottus asper) and Gobiidae. The highest importance of fish prey was in the marsh in spring (~ 40% prey weight), and fish prey comprised less than 25% prey weight in all other season/habitat combinations. Linear discriminant analyses suggested that marsh foraging was prevalent in Striped Bass collected in other habitats, mostly because of the predominance of marsh-associated invertebrates found in the stomachs of individual Striped Bass collected outside the marsh. Striped Bass diets differ across habitats, with marsh foraging important to Striped Bass regardless of collection location. This information can be used to forecast the potential utilization of restored habitats by this non-native piscivore.

Allometric Changes and Shape Comparisons of Two Southwestern Sucker Species and Their Hybrids Using a Geometric Morphometric Approach

AbstractHybridization between two sucker species, Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus and Flannelmouth Sucker Catostomus latipinnis, historically has occurred but has been facilitated by anthropogenic habitat alteration. The ability to differentiate Razorback Suckers from Flannelmouth Suckers and hybrids is essential for the conservation and management of the endangered Razorback Sucker. The purpose of our study was to investigate allometry—that is, how shape changes with length—of Razorback Sucker, Flannelmouth Sucker, and their hybrids. Razorback Sucker and Flannelmouth Sucker were artificially spawned to produce four progenies: Razorback Sucker, Flannelmouth Sucker, female Razorback Sucker × male Flannelmouth Sucker and female Flannelmouth Sucker × male Razorback Sucker. We also used hatchery‐reared Razorback Sucker and wild‐captured Flannelmouth Sucker to fill the size‐class gaps in our data. We conducted geometric morphometric analyses and used conditional inference trees to determine the length at which body shapes begin to differentiate among these four fish types. We used piecewise linear models to understand the allometry of each fish type and to evaluate the size at which body shape begins to differ from the juvenile form. Although we found statistical shape differences between the two hybrids, they would be difficult to detect with the naked eye. The results of our study showed that fish that are smaller than 140 mm total length (TL) are difficult to differentiate using shape alone. With the information provided in this study, field biologists should be cautious when identifying suckers smaller than 140 mm TL in the Colorado River basin.

Determinants of spring molt in bighorn sheep: life-history, plasticity and phenology.

Anthropogenic climate change and habitat alterations increase the importance of understanding the causes and consequences of variation in phenological traits. Although the timing of phenological events may vary in response to both direct and mediated effects, methods to measure and distinguish direct and mediated effects have seldom been used. We used a Bayesian structural equation model (SEM) to evaluate potential direct and mediated effects of intrinsic individual and environmental factors on the timing and progression of spring molt in bighorn sheep. The SEM showed that molt phenology varied across years, was earlier in prime-aged and in heavier individuals, slower in males, and later in lactating ewes, especially if they were light. These results highlight how individual variation in intrinsic traits and life-history leads to substantial variation in a phenological trait. Indirect effects in the SEM predicted a delay in sheep molt phenology at high population density mediated through negative density effects on body mass and lactation probability. Cooler temperatures in late spring were also predicted to delay molt phenology via a negative effect on body mass. Finally, lactation reduced ewe mass which was predicted to delay molt phenology. This mediated effect thus increased the total delay (sum of direct and mediated effects) in molt phenology experience by lactating ewes. Our results underline the importance of estimating direct and indirect effects when modeling phenological traits. Because indirect effects could substantially affect estimates of total plasticity, they should be critically important to accurately predict phenological mismatches and demographic consequences of environmental change.

Physical habitat in conterminous US streams and Rivers, part 2: A quantitative assessment of habitat condition

Rigorous assessments of the ecological condition of water resources and the effect of human activities on those waters require quantitative physical, chemical, and biological data. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s river and stream surveys quantify river and stream bed particle size and stability, instream habitat complexity and cover, riparian vegetation cover and structure, and anthropogenic disturbance activities. Physical habitat is strongly controlled by natural geoclimatic factors that co-vary with human activities. We expressed the anthropogenic alteration of physical habitat as O/E ratios of observed habitat metric values divided by values expected under least-disturbed reference conditions, where site-specific expected values vary given their geoclimatic and geomorphic context. We set criteria for good, fair, and poor condition based on the distribution of O/E values in regional least-disturbed reference sites. Poor conditions existed in 22–24% of the 1.2 million km of streams and rivers in the conterminous U.S. for riparian human disturbance, streambed sediment and riparian vegetation cover, versus 14% for instream habitat complexity. Based on the same four indicators, the percentage of stream length in poor condition within 9 separate U.S. ecoregions ranged from 4% to 42%. Associations of our physical habitat indices with anthropogenic pressures demonstrate the scope of anthropogenic habitat alteration; habitat condition was negatively related to the level of anthropogenic disturbance nationally and in nearly all ecoregions. Relative risk estimates showed that streams and rivers with poor sediment, riparian cover complexity, or instream habitat cover conditions were 1.4 to 2.6 times as likely to also have fish or macroinvertebrate assemblages in poor condition. Our physical habitat condition indicators help explain deviations in biological conditions from those observed among least-disturbed sites and inform management actions for rehabilitating impaired waters and mitigating further ecological degradation.

Legacy of supervolcanic eruptions on population genetic structure of brown kiwi

Supervolcanoes are volcanoes capable of mega-colossal eruptions that emit more than 1,000km3 of ash and other particles.1 The earth's most recent mega-colossal eruption was the Oruanui eruption of the Taupo supervolcano 25,580 years before present (YBP) on the central North Island of New Zealand.2 This eruption blanketed major swaths of the North Island in thick layers of ash and igneous rock,2,3 devastating habitats and likely causing widespread population extinctions.4-7 An additional devastating super-colossal eruption (>100km3) of the Taupo supervolcano occurred approximately 1,690 YBP.8 The impacts of such massive but ephemeral natural disasters on contemporary population genetic structure remain underexplored. Here, we combined data for 4,951 SNPs with spatially explicit demographic and coalescent models within an approximate Bayesian computation framework to test the drivers of genetic structure in brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli). Our results strongly support the importance of eruptions of the Taupo supervolcano in restructuring pre-existing geographic patterns of population differentiation and genetic diversity. Range shifts due to climatic oscillations-a frequent explanation for genetic structure9-are insufficient to fully explain the empirical data. Meanwhile, recent range contraction and fragmentation due to historically documented anthropogenic habitat alteration adds no explanatory power to our models. Our results support a major role for cycles of destruction and post-volcanic recolonization in restructuring the population genomic landscape of brown kiwi and highlight how ancient and ephemeral mega-disasters may leave a lasting legacy on patterns of intraspecific genetic variation.

Knock-On Effects of Environmental Influences during Embryonic Development of Ectothermic Vertebrates

Environmental factors influencing parents or offspring during embryogenesis can have knock-on effects at later life stages of the offspring. These effects may prepare the progeny for conditions that they may encounter as larvae, juveniles, and/or adults. Here, we give examples on how knock-on effects of temperature and predator cues can affect phenotypes of fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Such effects are best described in reptiles, but are generally widespread among ectotherms. Most of the species are oviparous with egg incubation outside the mother’s body. The eggs can be exposed to highly different and variable environmental conditions, and developmental plasticity may help offspring cope with influences they may encounter at a later stage, e.g., whether the habitat will be warmer or colder and/or safer or riskier than what they a priori are adapted for. Knock-on effects can be considered a subset of phenotypically plastic responses. They can be instantaneous or delayed, have a physiological foundation, and can be manifested as temperature-dependent sex determination and changes in morphological, physiological, life-history, and behavioral characters. They are often, but not exclusively, assumed evolutionarily favorable, particularly beneficial for invasive species and during periods of rapidly changing environments. However, although several studies suggest that plasticity in some cases increases survival and reproductive success, the fitness gain is still virtually untested. It is assumed that epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, could ultimately be important components of molecular mechanisms that allow early perceived cues to be expressed at a later stage in life. Although some empirical cases support this, evidence is still mostly circumstantial. Future research should investigate mechanisms and fitness effects of early environmental stimuli. These effects are important for the ecology of species and should be taken into account in experiments on ecological effects of environmental variables. This is of particular interest today because of climate change and increasing anthropogenic habitat alterations.

Weak niche partitioning between closely related sympatric Greater (Clanga clanga) and Lesser Spotted Eagles (C. pomarina)

Species coexist only when occupying different ecological niches. We evaluated habitat and trophic niches in two recently diverged hybridizing avian apex predators, the declining Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga (mainly found in contracting wetlands) and the more numerous Lesser Spotted Eagle Clanga pomarina (inhabiting mosaic farmlands). We tracked 24 Spotted Eagles, including interspecific hybrids, by GPS to estimate the home‐range size, land use composition and landscape structure in sympatric populations. In addition to information for landscape utilization, data for diet composition were evaluated. Home‐ranges of the two species were similar in size and open foraging habitats consisted mostly of agricultural landscape. However, landscape utilization of the Greater Spotted Eagle was largely driven by the composition of land‐use types, whereas the Lesser Spotted Eagle was mostly influenced by structural components of the landscape. Farmland‐dwelling voles accounted for the bulk of the diet in both species; however, subdominant prey classes differed. Hybrids exhibited intermediate or mixed features of home‐ranges and diets. Our results provide evidence for reduced niche partitioning and potential competition between the two Spotted Eagles, which may have been reinforced by anthropogenic habitat alteration. A closer examination of movement patterns revealed previously overlooked differences between closely related species with respect to landscape utilization strategies.

Influence of check dams on the activity pattern and morphometric traits of overwintering tadpoles in the Western Himalaya

Delaying metamorphosis in low-temperature conditions by anuran larvae known as ‘overwintering’ have been poorly studied, especially in terms of habitat ecology and behavioural aspects. The present study investigates some of the ecological aspects of overwintering tadpoles of the genus Nanorana in the Western Himalaya in an anthropogenically modified stream where check dams have altered the natural habitat, which can potentially influence the amphibian ecology. We present insights on the influence of check dams on the tadpole activity pattern and morphometric traits useful in the conservation planning of the narrowly distributed and understudied species, which are most sensitive to habitat modification.We monitored natural and modified pool habitats in the stream during winter and post-winter seasons based on the visual density of tadpoles to assess the diurnal and seasonal emergence pattern with associated habitat variables. Generalized Linear Mixed Modeling (GLMM) was used to understand the influence of various habitat variables on the visible density of tadpoles. Fine-scale temporal scan sampling of tadpoles was carried out to complement the understanding of the visible density variation and analyzed using circular plots and activity overlap estimation. Variation in morphometric traits was assessed using field morphometry and photogrammetry.Mean tadpole visible density at nighttime was higher in modified pools than natural pools during winter, but there was no statistically significant difference during daytime; the nocturnal pattern changed in the post-winter, where visible density was higher in natural pools. Tadpole visible density was influenced by the interaction of mean canopy cover with water temperature, instream cover items richness, mean canopy cover percentage, water temperature, leaf litter depth, water velocity and interaction of time of the day with pool modification. Tadpole activity patterns varied significantly between pool types during post-winter, where modified pool population increased daytime activity and thus the activity overlap reduced from winter (90.8%) to post-winter (64.5%). During both seasons, the mean body size of the natural pool population was significantly lower than the modified pool population; mean relative tail length was significantly lower in natural pools during post-winter; mean tail depth was significantly lower in natural pools during winter.The study presents evidence of the influence of anthropogenic habitat alterations on behaviour and morphometric traits of overwintering tadpoles, which needs to be further investigated. We also discuss the variation in nocturnal emergence, habitat selection and morphometric trait patterns in the modified habitat, potential reasons and similar behaviour in other aquatic organisms, which need to be considered while developing conservation strategies for the overwintering tadpoles in the region.

Taxonomic rarity and functional originality of freshwater fishes and their responses to anthropogenic habitat alterations

Abstract The human alteration of habitats is a major driver in the decline of biodiversity worldwide. However, the relationships between different forms of rarity, including both taxonomic and functional aspects, are poorly known. Two relationships were examined in this study: (i) between the different forms of taxonomic rarity and functional originality of lotic fishes; and (ii) between rarity indices and the degree of human alterations. Stream fish communities at 429 stream and river sites were sampled between 2013 and 2018. The taxonomic rarity of fishes was characterized based on their local rarity, habitat specificity and geographical restrictedness. The functional originality of each species was also quantified by using ecomorphological traits, and the relationships between the different indices and their responses to human habitat degradation were explored. Only weak or medium level correlations were found among the indices of taxonomic rarity. A combined taxonomic rarity index showed that overall taxonomic rarity was determined most strongly by local rarity, followed by habitat specificity, and finally, geographical restrictedness. Functional originality was not related either to individual rarity indices or the combined taxonomic rarity index. Mean taxonomic rarity of species was correlated with the degree of habitat degradation of the sites. Contrary to taxonomic rarity, mean functional originality of species increased with the degree of human alteration. This study shows that a more exact characterization of species rarity requires multiple metrics, including functional ones, because these indices respond differently to human alterations. Combined indices of rarity can help to prioritize species level conservation actions, although single rarity metrics are still needed to adapt these actions to species attributes (e.g. endemism or unique functions). Species level conservation would benefit from including the evaluation of functional rarity into conservation policy.
