Conditionally Background Level of Aerosol Pollution of Near-Surface Air in Moscow and One of Its Suburbs: Seasonal Variations

The data of continuous observations of aerosol composition in the near-surface atmosphere in Moscow (in the city center) and in Moscow region (near Zvenigorod, Moscow region) for three years, from autumn 2019 to the end of 2022, are analyzed. The obtained data were compared with the results of observations on the Moscow network stations “Mosecomonitoring”. The concept of conditionally background aerosol pollution of the atmosphere in Moscow is introduced for those days when the average daily concentration of PM10 is less than the MPC value (60 µg/m3). Previously, the authors found that all episodes of increased aerosol pollution in Moscow with daily average PM10 concentration higher than the MPC value, are associated either with the presence of a close local source in the city itself, or with the long-range transport of fire aerosols and/or dust from other territories to the Moscow region. The average daily PM2.5 concentration in the city and the suburb is lower than the MPC (35 µg/m3) all year round. The days corresponding to the introduced conditional background make up more than 91% over three years in the center of Moscow. Such a conditional background is formed by both natural and anthropogenic sources of aerosols, and not only of local, but also of remote origin. It implicitly takes into account the influence of meteorological conditions on sources and sinks of aerosols, as well as advective air mass transport of aerosol to and from the city. Seasonal variations in mass concentration of PM10, PM2.5 particles and individual chemical elements, as well as in the distribution of chemical elements by the size of aerosol particles in near-surface atmosphere under conditionally background pollution are analyzed. The emphasis is placed on the similarity and difference in the conditionally background near-surface aerosol for the city and the suburb in different seasons.

Cooking as an organic aerosol source leading to urban air quality degradation

Air quality degradation events in the urban environment are often attributed to anthropogenic aerosol sources related to combustion of liquid or solid fuels in various activities. The effects of massive cooking emissions during Greek nationwide traditional festivities were investigated by a combined characterization of particulate matter (PM) levels and organic aerosol (OA) sources. Focus was centered on periods around two major festivities, namely “Fat Thursday” and Easter Sunday along six different years. OA sources were apportioned through Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) on Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) mass spectra, while the spatial characteristics of the episodes were assessed through a low-cost, sensor-based PM2.5 monitoring network operating in Athens and other Greek cities. Contrasts were examined by considering a 15-day period around each event, while the effect of the 2020–2021 mobility restrictions, related to COVID-19, was also assessed. An episode-specific cooking organic aerosol (COA) spectral profile was delineated, and can be considered as a reference for ambient COA from meat grilling. Severe pollution episodes that affected the entire Athens basin were recorded, with PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 300 μg m−3 on occasions. COA contributions dominated primary organic aerosol (POA) and made up almost half of OA concentrations. During “Fat Thursday” COA concentrations and contributions peaked during night-time (23.2 μg m−3 and 46 %, respectively) while for Easter Sunday COA maxima were recorded in the early afternoon (27.4 μg m−3 and 39 %). Analyzing a full-year OA source dataset, revealed a pronounced recreational cooking pattern in central Athens, with COA concentrations rising towards the weekend, reflecting the impact of the food service sector. In view of the upcoming review of the EU air quality directive, foreseeing stricter annual PM2.5 limits as well as 24-h limit values and related alerts, the mitigation of cooking emissions appears as a potent instrument for achieving tangible air quality benefits.

Strong Anthropogenic Cloud Perturbations Can Persist for Multiple Days

AbstractUsing geostationary satellite data, we show that strong cloud perturbations downwind of isolated continental anthropogenic aerosol sources can live for multiple days, and 7% of tracks live longer than 48 hr. The median lifetime for polluted cloud tracks in Eastern Europe studied using Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager data is 18 hr but shows a strongly skewed distribution toward longer lifetimes. This suggests that ship‐track‐like cloud perturbations help infer causal relationships between aerosols and clouds. Strong anthropogenic cloud perturbations are usually visible until favorable liquid‐water low‐level clouds exist. Only in 12% of cases do liquid‐phase stratiform clouds persist, but tracks disappear. Longer‐lived tracks occur in anticyclonic conditions, and in case of statically very stable lower troposphere and low relative humidity above clouds.

Tracing natural and anthropogenic sources of aerosols to the Atlantic Ocean using Zn and Cu isotopes

Anthropogenic activities have significantly enhanced atmospheric metal inputs to the ocean, which has potentially important consequences for marine ecosystems. This study assesses the potential of Zn and Cu isotope compositions to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic atmospheric inputs of these metals to the surface ocean. To this end, the isotopic compositions of Zn and Cu in aerosols collected from the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean on the GEOTRACES GA06 cruise are examined. Enrichment factors and fractional solubility measurements indicate the presence of a significant anthropogenic component in the aerosols collected furthest from the North African dust plume for both Zn and Cu. The mean δ65CuNIST SRM 976 for the fully digested aerosols is +0.07 ± 0.39 ‰ (n = 9, 2 SD), which is indistinguishable from the lithogenic value, and implies that Cu isotopes are not an effective tracer of aerosol sources in this region. The mean δ66ZnJMC-Lyon value for the aerosols that underwent a total digestion is +0.17 ± 0.22 ‰ (n = 11, 2 SD). The aerosols leached with ammonium acetate have similar Zn isotope compositions, with a mean of +0.15 ± 0.16 ‰ (n = 7, 2 SD). The aerosols were collected in a region with prevalent mineral dust but, despite this, exhibit isotopically lighter Zn than lithogenic Zn with δ66Zn ≈ +0.3 ‰. When coupled with the previously published Pb isotope data, the aerosols exhibit coupled Zn-Pb isotope systematics that are indicative of mixing between mineral dust (δ66Zn = +0.28 ‰ and 206Pb/207Pb = 1.205) and anthropogenic emissions (δ66Zn = −0.22 ‰ and 206Pb/207Pb = 1.129). This demonstrates the potential of Zn isotopes to trace atmospheric Zn inputs from anthropogenic sources to the surface ocean.

Columnar aerosol optical depth, water vapor and ozone over a semi-arid urban location of western India: Potential sources and direct radiative effects

Continuous measurements of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), columnar water vapor (WV) and Ozone (O3) concentrations were made over a semi-arid urban location Rajkot (22.29°N, 70.74°E, and 142 m AMSL) in the western India. The annual mean values of AOD, WV and O3 were 0.37 ± 0.15, 1.44 ± 0.6 gm cm−2 and 243 ± 18 DU during 2016–2019. AOD showed large seasonal variability mostly dominated by abundant coarse mode aerosols (Angstrom Exponent, AE < 0.65 and AOD ∼ 0.37) during pre-monsoon and monsoon, mainly caused by wind-blown and transported dust from nearby Thar and Kutch desert. Mixture of fine and coarse mode aerosols were abundant (AE = 1.13 ± 0.26) during post-monsoon influenced by both anthropogenic and natural sources. Columnar WV were also higher in pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. The O3 concentrations is higher during pre-monsoon (247 DU) and lower during monsoon (230 DU). The vertical distribution of aerosol extinction coefficient derived from satellite (CALIPSO) based observations revealed the dominance of dust aerosols (∼74 %) in pre-monsoon; smoke and polluted dust in winter and post monsoon period. The trajectory clusters and concentration weighted trajectory maps also indicated the combined effect of anthropogenic (especially from the northern part of India) and natural aerosol sources during the post-monsoon period. Associated with the higher anthropogenic components during post-monsoon season, aerosol direct radiative forcing depicted surface dimming as high as − 48.7 ± 12.6 Wm−2, resulting in atmospheric forcing of 42.6 ± 12.5 Wm−2.

Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic analysis of reference materials and natural and anthropogenic particulate matter sources: Implications for accurately tracing North African dust in complex urban atmospheres.

We present novel chemical separation protocols for isotopic analysis of low mass aliquots (0.3mg and 25mg) of several reference materials and real-world samples of relevance to urban airborne particulate matter (PM) investigations. A high-yielding gravity flow column chromatography scheme was developed for facile and quantitative separation of Sr, Nd, and Hf prior to multi collector - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Because we are interested in isolating and accurately quantitating individual anthropogenic and natural aerosol sources in complex industrial/metropolitan atmospheric environments, laboratory protocols were optimized using National Institute of Standards and Technology Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1648a (urban atmospheric PM), SRM 1633b (coal fly ash), and European Commission standards BCR-723 (vehicular road dust), and BCR-2 (basalt rock standard). Sr, Nd, and Hf procedural blanks from column chromatography were low (averaging only 37pg, 17pg, 11pg, respectively) and recoveries were high (averaging 95%, 82%, and 92%, respectively). A volume-adjustment protocol was established using isotope reference solutions SRM 987 (SrCO3), JNdi (Nd2O3), and in-house Hf standards to dilute the dried samples prior to MC-ICP-MS based on projected uncertainties for low sample masses. 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd, and 176Hf/177Hf isotopic ratios in SRM 1648a, BCR-723, and SRM 1633b are reported for the first time that can serve as provisional reference values. The novel method was used to characterize isotopic ratios and elemental abundances in two anthropogenic urban aerosol sources, namely motor vehicles and petroleum refining using airborne fine PM collected in a vehicular tunnel and fluidized-bed catalytic cracking catalysts, respectively. Two other important mineral-rich urban PM sources, namely soil (i.e., resuspended crustal material) and concrete/cement dust (i.e., construction activity) were also characterized. These are the first isotopic measurements in these environmental compartments and were compared with literature data for long-range transported North African dust, which is a prominent summertime PM source in urban regions in southeastern United States. We demonstrate the capability of coupled Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes to uniquely trace different mineral dust sources with overlapping elemental composition (Sahara-Sahel region, local soil, and concrete/cement) and accurately isolate various urban PM sources demonstrating the superiority of isotopic markers over elemental tracers.

Anthropogenic Emission Sources of Sulfate Aerosols in Hangzhou, East China: Insights from Isotope Techniques with Consideration of Fractionation Effects between Gas-to-Particle Transformations.

Sulfate (SO42-) is a major species in atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5), inducing haze formation and influencing Earth's climate. In this study, the δ34S values in PM2.5 sulfate (δ34S-SO42-) were measured in Hangzhou, east China, from 2015 September to 2016 October. The result showed that the δ34S-SO42- values varied from 1.6 to 6.4‰ with the higher values in the winter. The estimated fractionation factor (α34Sg→p) from SO2 to SO42- averaged at 3.9 ± 1.6‰. The higher α34Sg→p values in the winter were mainly attributed to the decrease of ambient temperature. We further compared the quantified source apportionments of sulfate by isotope techniques with and without the consideration of fractionation factors. The result revealed that the partitioned emission sources to sulfate with the consideration of the fractionation effects were more logical, highlighting that fractionation effects should be considered in partitioning emission sources to sulfate using sulfur isotope techniques. With considering the fractionation effects, coal burning was the dominant source to sulfate (85.5%), followed by traffic emissions (12.8%) and oil combustion (1.7%). However, the coal combustion for residential heating contributed only 0.9% to sulfate on an annual basis in this megacity.

Elucidating the present-day chemical composition, seasonality and source regions of climate-relevant aerosols across the Arctic land surface

The Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the global average, and the role of aerosols is not well constrained. Aerosol number concentrations can be very low in remote environments, rendering local cloud radiative properties highly sensitive to available aerosol. The composition and sources of the climate-relevant aerosols, affecting Arctic cloud formation and altering their microphysics, remain largely elusive due to a lack of harmonized concurrent multi-component, multi-site, and multi-season observations. Here, we present a dataset on the overall chemical composition and seasonal variability of the Arctic total particulate matter (with a size cut at 10 μm, PM10, or without any size cut) at eight observatories representing all Arctic sectors. Our holistic observational approach includes the Russian Arctic, a significant emission source area with less dedicated aerosol monitoring, and extends beyond the more traditionally studied summer period and black carbon/sulfate or fine-mode pollutants. The major airborne Arctic PM components in terms of dry mass are sea salt, secondary (non-sea-salt, nss) sulfate, and organic aerosol (OA), with minor contributions from elemental carbon (EC) and ammonium. We observe substantial spatiotemporal variability in component ratios, such as EC/OA, ammonium/nss-sulfate and OA/nss-sulfate, and fractional contributions to PM. When combined with component-specific back-trajectory analysis to identify marine or terrestrial origins, as well as the companion study by Moschos et al 2022 Nat. Geosci. focusing on OA, the composition analysis provides policy-guiding observational insights into sector-based differences in natural and anthropogenic Arctic aerosol sources. In this regard, we first reveal major source regions of inner-Arctic sea salt, biogenic sulfate, and natural organics, and highlight an underappreciated wintertime source of primary carbonaceous aerosols (EC and OA) in West Siberia, potentially associated with the oil and gas sector. The presented dataset can assist in reducing uncertainties in modelling pan-Arctic aerosol-climate interactions, as the major contributors to yearly aerosol mass can be constrained. These models can then be used to predict the future evolution of individual inner-Arctic atmospheric PM components in light of current and emerging pollution mitigation measures and improved region-specific emission inventories.

The contribution of coral-reef-derived dimethyl sulfide to aerosol burden over the Great Barrier Reef: a modelling study

Abstract. Coral reefs have been found to produce the sulfur compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a climatically relevant aerosol precursor predominantly associated with phytoplankton. Until recently, the role of coral-reef-derived DMS within the climate system had not been quantified. A study preceding the present work found that DMS produced by corals had negligible long-term climatic forcing at the global–regional scale. However, at sub-daily timescales more typically associated with aerosol and cloud formation, the influence of coral-reef-derived DMS on local aerosol radiative effects remains unquantified. The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) has been used in this work to study the role of coral-reef-derived DMS at sub-daily timescales for the first time. WRF-Chem was run to coincide with an October 2016 field campaign over the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia, against which the model was evaluated. After updating and scaling the DMS surface water climatology, the model reproduced DMS and sulfur concentrations well. The inclusion of coral-reef-derived DMS resulted in no significant change in sulfate aerosol mass or total aerosol number. Subsequently, no direct or indirect aerosol effects were detected. The results suggest that the co-location of the Great Barrier Reef with significant anthropogenic aerosol sources along the Queensland coast prevents coral-reef-derived aerosol from having a modulating influence on local aerosol burdens in the current climate.

A Modeling Investigation of the Potential Impacts of Pollution Aerosols on Hurricane Harvey

AbstractWe examine the potential role of aerosol pollution on the rainfall and intensity of hurricane Harvey. For this study, we use the global model, OLAM, with aerosol estimates from the global atmospheric chemistry model GEOS-Chem. Two sets of simulations of hurricane Harvey were performed. Simulations in the first set cover the intensification phase of Harvey until initial landfall in Texas and focus on the sensitivity of storm track and intensity, while simulations in the second set examine the sensitivity of storm track and precipitation during the period after initial landfall when record flooding occurred near Houston. During each period, simulations were performed with no anthropogenic sources of aerosol, with both natural and anthropogenic aerosol sources, and with both sources enhanced ten times.During the rapid intensification phase, the results indicate that aerosol amounts had very little impact on storm motion. Moreover, very little difference was found on the intensity of the simulated storm to aerosol amounts for the no-anthropogenic vs the GEOS-Chem estimated amounts with anthropogenic sources. However, when both natural and anthropogenic aerosol amounts were enhanced ten times, the simulated storm intensity was enhanced appreciably in terms of minimum sea-level pressure.During the second period of the simulation, through which Harvey remained a tropical storm, the main result was that very little sensitivity was found in precipitation or any other TC characteristic to aerosol concentrations. We cannot definitively state why the individual convective cells did not respond to high aerosol concentrations during this phase of the storm. However, the abundant precipitation in all three simulations scavenged the vast majority of aerosol as it flowed radially inward, and we speculate that this modulated the potential impact of aerosols on the inner TC and eyewallOverall, the simulated response of hurricane Harvey to aerosols was far less spectacular than what has been simulated in the past. We conclude that this is because hurricane Harvey was a strongly dynamically-driven storm system that as a result was relatively impervious to the effects of aerosols.

Two decades of aerosol observations by AATSR, MISR, MODIS and MERRA-2 over India and Indian Ocean

Atmospheric aerosols play key roles in radiation budget, ecosystem dynamics, air quality and cloud microphysics of a region and thus, they greatly influence the global climate, ecosystem and public health. We present the temporal variability of atmospheric aerosols over India and north Indian Ocean (NIO) for the past two decades (2000–2019). Here, the measurements from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra, Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) on Terra, and Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) measurements from Envisat, and Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis data are considered. On average, the Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP) shows the largest (0.5–1.2), and NIO and Himalaya show the smallest (0.1 or smaller) Aerosol Optical depth (AOD) values. The peak AOD loading is observed in June–July-August, and IGP has a secondary peak in March owing to the stubble and biomass burning in winter months. In contrast, the peak aerosol loading in the northeast is in winter due to forest and biomass burning during the period there. The inter-annual variability is very small in NIO, Himalaya and Bay of Bengal. The trends estimated from the combined (AATSR, MISR, MODIS and MERRA-2) data show the highest positive trends at the lower IGP and east central regions, about 0.8–1.2/dec, and are statistically significant. This is consistent with the urban activity, industries and dense population there. However, the Desert, northern Himalaya and northern Arabian Sea show insignificant negative trends, from −0.2 to −0.4/dec, as the anthropogenic sources of aerosols are very limited there. The bias estimate shows that most satellite and reanalysis data are in very good agreement at all regions (within 0.1–0.2). Even though the bias in the measurements are considered, the trends estimated are still large enough to be statistically significant. The analyses, therefore, caution the increasing aerosol loading and their plausible climate feedback in these regions. The assessment also demonstrate the potential of synergetic use of multiple-platform measurements for climate system studies.

Field observations of sand flux and dust emission above a gobi desert surface

Gobi deserts are a major source of natural and anthropogenic aerosols in China. However, the characteristics of the sand flow and dust emission processes are still an open question. This study intends to accurately describe the characteristics of the sand flow and dust emission and to determine the relationship between the sand transport rate and the vertical dust flux above a gobi surface. In this study, a field observation was conducted over a gobi (gravel) desert surface (Yangguan Gobi Desert, Gansu Province, China). We investigated the wind velocity, sand flux, and concentration of particles smaller than 10 μm (PM10) by using cup anemometers, a sonic anemometer, sand traps, and DustTrak. We found that (1) piecewise regression described the vertical sand flux profiles; the upper part of the profile (above 17 cm) should be described by a power function and the lower part should be described by a Gaussian function. (2) An empirical model based on the modified Owen equation could predict the sand transport rate accurately. (3) The vertical dust flux was described well by Fv∝u*3 and the dust emission above the gobi surface should follow Aρu*t (u*2 − u*t2), where A is an empirical regression coefficient. (4) The efficiency of saltation bombardment (Fv/Q) was linearly related to the ratio u*t/u*. The results of this study show that the characteristics of the sand flow and dust emission above a gobi surface were highly different from those of bare sandy surface. In future research, it will be necessary to account for the effect of surface characteristics, and particularly the characteristics of the gravel, to improve the predictive ability of our model.

Assessment of COVID-19 effects on satellite-observed aerosol loading over China with machine learning

Aerosols are a critical component of the climate system and a risk to human health. Here, the lockdown response to the coronavirus outbreak is used to analyse effects of dramatic reduction in anthropogenic aerosol sources on satellite-retrieved aerosol optical depth (AOD). A machine learning model is applied to estimate daily AOD during the initial lockdown in China in early 2020. The model uses information on aerosol climatology, geography and meteorological conditions, and explains 69% of the day-to-day AOD variability. A comparison of model-expected and observed AOD shows that no clear, systematic decrease in AOD is apparent during the lockdown in China. During March 2020, regional AOD is observed to be significantly lower than expected by the machine learning model in some coastal regions of the North China Plains and extending to the Korean peninsula. While this may possibly indicate a small lockdown effect on regional AOD, and potentially pointing trans-boundary effects of the lockdown measures, due to uncertainties associated with the method and the limited sample sizes, this AOD decrease cannot be unequivocally attributed to reduced anthropogenic emissions. Climatologically expected AOD is compared to a weather-adjusted expectation of AOD, indicating that meteorological influences have acted to significantly increase AOD during this time, in agreement with recent literature. The findings highlight the complexity of aerosol variability and the challenges of observation-based attribution of columnar aerosol changes.

Examination of Aerosol-Induced Convective Invigoration Using Idealized Simulations

Abstract Idealized large-eddy simulations (LESs) are performed of deep convective clouds over south Florida to examine the relative role of aerosol-induced condensational versus mixed-phase invigoration to convective intensity and rainfall. Aerosol concentrations and chemistry are represented by using output from the GEOS-Chem global atmospheric chemistry model run with and without anthropogenic aerosol sources. The results clearly show that higher aerosol concentrations result in enhanced precipitation, larger amounts of cloud liquid water content, enhanced updraft velocities during the latter part of the simulation, and a modest enhancement of the latent heating of condensation. Overall, our results are consistent with the concept that convective cloud invigoration is mainly due to condensational invigoration and not primarily to mixed-phase invigoration. Furthermore, our results suggest that condensational invigoration can result in appreciable precipitation enhancement of ordinary warm-based convective clouds such as are common in locations like south Florida.

Spectral and seasonal variations of aerosol optical depth with special reference to Kanpur, Indo-Gangetic Basin

Objectives: To find characteristics of Aerosol optical depth (AOD) at ultraviolet (340-380 nm), visible (440-675 nm) and near-infrared (870-1020 nm) wavelength spectrum. During estimation of the radiative effect of aerosol in the atmosphere of earth radiation budget, it is important to study AOD. It is the total disappearance of sun rays due to aerosols in atmospheric column by absorption and scattering. Methodology: AOD is being measured using ground based sensor called CIMEL Sun photometer over Kanpur as it is situated in the Indo-Gangetic Basin. Findings: The seasonal variations in AOD as well as in various months of the year at 340nm, 500nm and 1020nm under all clear days have been studied. The observations showed that AOD was increasing from Pre-monsoon to Post-monsoon season at short wavelengths; whereas it was found to be decreasing at longer wavelengths regions. Novelty: Area under study is surrounded by small to large scale industries. Therefore, industrial emission is a major source of anthropogenic aerosols. The study of spectral and seasonal variations of Aerosol Optical Depth is important because the accumulation of aerosol particularly mixing state of aerosols has impact on atmospheric dynamics. Furthermore this work will also motivate the researchers to develop aerosol climatology map particularly for Indian regions. The first results of the complicated experiment for studying atmospheric composition in Moscow metropolis in different seasons are considered. The mass concentrations of aerosol particles PM10 and PM2.5, as well as the total aerosol concentration in the surface air of the city center were analyzed for the period of eight months (October 2019 – May 2020). The obtained monthly average values of aerosol concentrations show good correlation with the results of measurements at several stations of Mosecomonitoring system, differences in monthly average values are about 35–40 % and 20–25 %, respectively, from the average values. This is primarily due to various degrees of urbanization, the specifics and intensity of local anthropogenic aerosol sources in different areas of the city, as well as the peculiarities of the circulation regime of the Moscow metropolis. For three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring 2019/2020), the corresponding monthly average mass concentrations were about 24 and 11 μg/m3 for PM10 and PM2.5 aerosols, which is very close to corresponding mass concentrations in the atmosphere of a number of major European cities and lower than the mass concentrations of submicron and micron surface aerosols in the megacities of East Asia. The measurement results are noticeably higher than MERRA-2 reanalysis data. Reanalysis data qualitatively reflect intra-annual variations in the mass concentration of aerosol in the city’s surface air. However, MERRA-2 reanalysis greatly underestimates the level of aerosol pollution in Moscow, from 2 to 12 times in different months for the total aerosol mass or PM2.5 particles.

Marine Boundary Layer Clouds Associated with Coastally Trapped Disturbances: Observations and Model Simulations

Abstract Modeling marine low clouds and fog in coastal environments remains an outstanding challenge due to the inherently complex ocean–land–atmosphere system. This is especially important in the context of global circulation models due to the profound radiative impact of these clouds. This study utilizes aircraft and satellite measurements, in addition to numerical simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, to examine three well-observed coastally trapped disturbance (CTD) events from June 2006, July 2011, and July 2015. Cloud water-soluble ionic and elemental composition analyses conducted for two of the CTD cases indicate that anthropogenic aerosol sources may impact CTD cloud decks due to synoptic-scale patterns associated with CTD initiation. In general, the dynamics and thermodynamics of the CTD systems are well represented and are relatively insensitive to the choice of physics parameterizations; however, a set of WRF simulations suggests that the treatment of model physics strongly influences CTD cloud field evolution. Specifically, cloud liquid water path (LWP) is highly sensitive to the choice of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme; in many instances, the PBL scheme affects cloud extent and LWP values as much as or more than the microphysics scheme. Results suggest that differences in the treatment of entrainment and vertical mixing in the Yonsei University (nonlocal) and Mellor–Yamada–Janjić (local) PBL schemes may play a significant role. The impact of using different driving models—namely, the North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM) 12-km analysis and the NCEP North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) 32-km products—is also investigated.

Biogenic and anthropogenic sources of aerosols at the High Arctic site Villum Research Station

Abstract. There are limited measurements of the chemical composition, abundance and sources of atmospheric particles in the High Arctic To address this, we report 93 d of soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) data collected from 20 February to 23 May 2015 at Villum Research Station (VRS) in northern Greenland (81∘36′ N). During this period, we observed the Arctic haze phenomenon with elevated PM1 concentrations ranging from an average of 2.3, 2.3 and 3.3 µg m−3 in February, March and April, respectively, to 1.2 µg m−3 in May. Particulate sulfate (SO42-) accounted for 66 % of the non-refractory PM1 with the highest concentration until the end of April and decreasing in May. The second most abundant species was organic aerosol (OA) (24 %). Both OA and PM1, estimated from the sum of all collected species, showed a marked decrease throughout May in accordance with the polar front moving north, together with changes in aerosol removal processes. The highest refractory black carbon (rBC) concentrations were found in the first month of the campaign, averaging 0.2 µg m−3. In March and April, rBC averaged 0.1 µg m−3 while decreasing to 0.02 µg m−3 in May. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) of the OA mass spectra yielded three factors: (1) a hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) factor, which was dominated by primary aerosols and accounted for 12 % of OA mass, (2) an Arctic haze organic aerosol (AOA) factor and (3) a more oxygenated marine organic aerosol (MOA) factor. AOA dominated until mid-April (64 %–81 % of OA), while being nearly absent from the end of May and correlated significantly with SO42-, suggesting the main part of that factor is secondary OA. The MOA emerged late at the end of March, where it increased with solar radiation and reduced sea ice extent and dominated OA for the rest of the campaign until the end of May (24 %–74 % of OA), while AOA was nearly absent. The highest O∕C ratio (0.95) and S∕C ratio (0.011) was found for MOA. Our data support the current understanding that Arctic aerosols are highly influenced by secondary aerosol formation and receives an important contribution from marine emissions during Arctic spring in remote High Arctic areas. In view of a changing Arctic climate with changing sea-ice extent, biogenic processes and corresponding source strengths, highly time-resolved data are needed in order to elucidate the components dominating aerosol concentrations and enhance the understanding of the processes taking place.

Contribution to column-integrated aerosol typing based on Sun-photometry using different criteria

This study analyses the aerosol optical and microphysical properties obtained by the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in seven different sites operating in the Iberian Peninsula during three coincident years (2010−2012) with the objective of studying different aerosol typing approaches. This area is of interest due to its location between the Sahara desert (the largest source of natural aerosols in the world) and mainland Europe (a relevant source of anthropogenic aerosols). In particular, we study the aerosol optical depth (AOD), Angström parameter (α440–870) and fine mode fraction (FMF), which are estimated from direct sun irradiance measurements. Additionally, the single scattering albedo (ωo) and aerosol particle size distribution (PSD), which are computed using additional sky radiances measurements under cloudless skies, are used in our analyses. The analyses show aerosol seasonal patterns in the AOD with maximum values in summer/spring and minimum values in winter/autumn for all the analysed stations. For α440–870, there are differences from site to site, with maximum values in winter and minimum values in summer for the southern locations, while there is not a remarkable pattern for the eastern locations close to the Mediterranean coast. The frequent and intense Saharan dust outbreaks over the southern Iberian Peninsula and the intense anthropogenic activity in the eastern urban locations are behind these seasonal patterns in the AOD and α440–870. In this work, two of the most employed classification schemes of aerosol type in the literature are used: one is based on the AOD and α440–870, the other one is based on ωo at 440 nm and the FMF and a new classification scheme based on ωo at 440 nm and FMF is proposed. The results revealed that the new classification method is more appropriate for distinguishing the aerosol types that affect the Iberian Peninsula. The relationship derived here between Δωo = ωo (440)- ωo (1020) and the FMF is demonstrated to be useful for aerosol type classification when no measurements of the sky radiances, and consequently of ωo(440), are available. Alternatively, the relationship between the ratio Δωo/ωo(440) and the FMF can be used because (Δωo/ωo) provides information about both the spectral ωo and the absolute values.

Nonlinear impacts of future anthropogenic aerosol emissions on Arctic warming

Past reductions of anthropogenic aerosol concentrations in Europe and North America could have amplified Arctic warming. In the future the impact of air pollution policies may differ, because the major anthropogenic sources of atmospheric aerosols are increasingly located in Asia. In this study numerical experiments evaluating only direct aerosol effects on atmospheric temperatures indicate that, while reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions weaken Arctic warming, direct radiative forcing effects by reductions of anthropogenic aerosol concentrations, additional to those obtained by lower CO2 emissions, can either amplify or diminish it. Interactions between regionally modified radiation in Asia and internal climate variability may differently initiate and sustain atmospheric planetary waves propagating into the Arctic. In a nonlinear manner planetary waves may redistribute atmospheric and oceanic meridional heat fluxes at the high latitudes and either amplify or diminish Arctic warming in 2050. Lower CO2 concentrations might apparently contribute to reduce the interactions between the Arctic system and the lower latitudes, thus reducing the influence of strong air quality measures in Asia on the Arctic amplification of global warming. While past and present air pollution policies could have amplified Arctic warming, in the future the effects from atmospheric pollution reductions are less certain, depending on the future CO2 concentrations, and requiring improved simulations of changing aerosol concentrations and their interactions with clouds in Asia and the Arctic.
