Anthelmintic studies. II. A double entero-nemacidal anthelmintic test covering a wide range of activities.

A technique is described of the use of two infections in the rat which respond to the anthelmintics acting on a very wide range of gastro-intestinal nematodes. It can be used as a routine screening test for anthelmintics or for the study of variations in the degree of activity caused by alterations in formulation or presentation.

Keratitis in Pheasants following Treatment with Phenothiazine

During the course of some anthelmintic tests carried out during June, 1949, it was necessary continuously to feed 4 per cent, phenothiazine to pheasant poults in the daily mash, which they ate without any obvious distaste and grew reasonably well. The birds were a mixture of several varieties of Phasianus colchicus, including some Formosan and Korean hybrids. These latter birds have a light coloured plumage and it was soon noticed that the feathers were darkening. The change was obvious less than 86 hours after the first experimental feeding. All the birds were therefore examined and it was found that all were similarly affected though it was less obvious among the melanistics and blacknecks, which have a darker plumage. The leg scales too had taken on a distinct dark green hue, and this became more intense as the tests proceeded; the pigmented feathers assumed a fiat brownish colour, while the filoplumes are distinctly red.

Characteristics of the Population Available for Bioassay of Anthelmintics in Nippostrongylus muris Infection in Albino Rats

The growing need for a more accurate method of assaying anthelmintics has suggested the use of Nippostrongylus muris infection in standard albino rats as a source of test material. Although it has been used in many of the recent quantitative experiments in immunity and resistance and once in analyzing anthelmintics (Schwartz and Porter, 1937), no experiments designed to discover how the worms varied from one host to another have been reported. Since such knowledge is a prerequisite to accurate statistical analysis of the proposed type of anthelmintic tests, the present experiments are reported to fill this lacuna and to suggest methods of stabilizing the technic.
